We consider a qubit subject to various independent control mechanisms and present a general strategy to identify both the internal Hamiltonian and the interaction Hamiltonian for each control mechanism, relying only on a single, fixed readout process such as $σ_z$ measurements.
We address the dynamics of quantum correlations in a two-qubit system subject to unbalanced random telegraph noise (RTN) and discuss in details the similarities and the differences with the balanced case. We also evaluate quantum non-Markovianity of the dynamical map. Finally, we discuss the effects of unbalanced RTN on teleportation, showing that noise imbalance mitigates decoherence and preserves teleportation fidelity.
Parasitic two-level-system (TLS) defects are one of the major factors limiting the coherence times of superconducting qubits. Although there has been significant progress in characterizing basic parameters of TLS defects, exact mechanisms of interactions between a qubit and various types of TLS defects remained largely unexplored due to the lack of experimental techniques able to probe the form of qubit-defect couplings. Here we present an experimental method of TLS defect spectroscopy using a strong qubit drive that allowed us to distinguish between various types of qubit-defect interactions.…
The $N$-qubit Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states are the maximally entangled states of $N$ qubits, which have had many important applications in quantum information processing, such as quantum key distribution and quantum secret sharing. Thus how to distinguish the GHZ states from other quantum states becomes a significant problem. In this work, by presenting a family of the generalized Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) inequality, we show that the $N$-qubit GHZ states can be indeed identified by the maximal violations of the generalized CHSH inequality under some specific measurement se…
Individual trapped atomic qubits represent one of the most promising technologies to scale quantum computers, owing to their negligible idle errors and the ability to implement a full set of reconfigurable gate operations via focused optical fields. However, the fidelity of quantum gate operations can be limited by weak confinement of the atoms transverse to the laser. We present measurements of this effect by performing individually-addressed entangling gates in chains of up to 25 trapped atomic ions that are weakly confined along the chain axis. We present a model that accurately describes t…
We present an essentially exact numerical method for modelling flux qubit chains subject to charge and flux noise. We define an essentially exact method as one that introduces errors that are completely controlled such that they can be made arbitrarily small by tuning the simulation parameters. The method adopts the quasi-adiabatic path integral formalism to express the system's reduced density matrix as a time-discretized path integral, comprising a series of influence functionals that encode the non-Markovian dynamics of the system. We present a detailed derivation of the path integral expre…
Quantum teleportation enables networking participants to move an unknown quantum state between the nodes of a quantum network, and hence constitutes an essential element in constructing large-sale quantum processors with a quantum modular architecture. Herein, we propose two protocols for teleporting qubits through an N-node quantum network in a highly-entangled box-cluster state or chain-type cluster state. The proposed protocols are systematically scalable to an arbitrary finite number N and applicable to arbitrary size of modules. The protocol based on a box-cluster state is implemented on …
We demonstrate the transition from local to global noise in a two-qubit all-optical quantum simulator subject to classical random fluctuations. Qubits are encoded in the polarization degree of freedom of two entangled photons generated by parametric down-conversion (PDC) while the environment is implemented using their spatial degrees of freedom. The ability to manipulate with high accuracy the number of correlated pixels of a spatial-light-modulator and the spectral PDC width, allows us to control the transition from a scenario where the qubits are embedded in local environments to the situat…
The most common error models for quantum computers assume the independence of errors on different qubits. However, most noise mechanisms have some correlations in space. We show how to improve quantum information processing for few-qubit systems when spatial correlations are present. This starts with strategies to measure the correlations. Once the correlations have been determined, we can give criteria to assess the suitability of candidate quantum circuits to carry out a given task. This is achieved by defining measures of decoherence that are local in Hilbert space, identifying "good" and "…

The simulation complexity of predicting the time evolution of delocalized many-body quantum systems has attracted much recent interest, and simulations of such systems in real quantum hardware are promising routes to demonstrating a quantum advantage over classical machines. In these proposals, random noise is an obstacle that must be overcome for a faithful simulation, and a single error event can be enough to drive the system to a classically trivial state. We argue that this need not always be the case, and consider a modification to a leading quantum sampling problem-- time evolution in an…

For neutral atom qubits, the two-qubit gate is typically realized via the Rydberg blockade effect, which hints about the special status of the Rydberg level besides the regular qubit register states. Here, we carry out experimental and theoretical studies to reveal how the ground-Rydberg coherence of the control qubit atom affects the process of two-qubit Controlled-Z ($C_Z$) gate, such as the commonly used ground-Rydberg $π$-gap-$π$ pulse sequence originally proposed in Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{85}, 2208 (2000). We measure the decoherence of the control qubit atom after the $π$-gap-$π$ pulses…
We consider multiple-period states in systems of periodically modulated qubits. In such states the discrete time-translation symmetry imposed by the modulation is broken. We explicitly show how multiple-period states emerge in the simplest quantum system, a single qubit subjected to a pulsed resonant modulation and/or a pulsed modulation of the transition frequency. We also show that a qubit chain with the qubit coupling modulated at twice the qubit frequency has symmetry that allows mapping it on the Kitaev chain and thus provides an example of a topologically nontrivial Floquet system. An ex…

A hybrid quantum-classical filtering problem, where a qubit system is disturbed by a classical stochastic process, is investigated. The strategy is to model the classical disturbance by using an optical cavity. Relations between classical disturbances and the cavity analog system are analyzed. The dynamics of the enlarged quantum network system, which includes a qubit system and a cavity system, are derived. A stochastic master equation for the qubit-cavity hybrid system is given, based on which estimates for the state of the cavity system and the classical signal are obtained. The quantum ext…
In multi-qubit system, correlated errors subject to unwanted interactions with other qubits is one of the major obstacles for scaling up quantum computers to be applicable. We present two approaches to correct such noise and demonstrate with high fidelity and robustness. We use spectator and intruder to discriminate the environment interacting with target qubit in different parameter regime. Our proposed approaches combines analytical theory and numerical optimization, and are general to obtain smooth control pulses for various qubit systems. Both theory and numerical simulations demonstrate t…
The article introduces efficient quantum state tomography schemes for qutrits and entangled qubits subject to pure decoherence. We implement the dynamic state reconstruction method for open systems sent through phase-damping channels which was proposed in: Open Syst. Inf. Dyn. 23, 1650019 (2016). In the current article we prove that two distinct observables measured at four different time instants suffice to reconstruct the initial density matrix of a qutrit with evolution given by a phase-damping channel. Furthermore, we generalize the approach in order to determine the optimal criteria for q…
