We study a system of $A$ identical interacting bosons trapped by an external field by solving ab initio the many-body Schroedinger equation. A complete solution by using, for example, the traditional hyperspherical harmonics (HH) basis develops serious problems due to the large degeneracy of HH basis, symmetrization of the wave function, calculation of the matrix elements, etc. for large $A$. Instead of the HH basis, here we use the "potential harmonics" (PH) basis, which is a subset of HH basis. We assume that the contribution to the orbital and grand orbital [in $3(A-1)$-dimensional space of the reduced motion] quantum numbers comes only from the interacting pair. This implies inclusion of two-body correlations only and disregard of all higher-body correlations. Such an assumption is ideally suited for the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), which is extremely dilute. Unlike the $(3A-4)$ hyperspherical variables in HH basis, the PH basis involves only three {\it{active}} variables. It drastically reduces the number of coupled equations and calculation of the potential matrix becomes tremendously simplified, as it involves integrals over only three variables for any $A$. One can easily incorporate realistic atom-atom interactions in a straight forward manner. We study the ground and excited state properties of the condensate for both attractive and repulsive interactions for various particle number.
A Single Trapped Ion as a Time-Dependent Harmonic Oscillator
我们展示了如何一个单一的被困离子可能被用来测试各种重要的物理模型实现随时间变化的谐振子。离子本身通过激光诱导的电子跃迁充当其自身的运动检测器。Alsing等人[Phys. Rev. Lett.
We study the exactly solvable quantum system of two particles confined in a three-dimensional harmonic trap and interacting via finite-range soft-core interaction by means of the separation of variables and ansatz method. Supposing the solution in the form of ansatz $Ψ(r)=r^{a}e^{-λr^2} ψ(r)$ we transform the time independent Schrödinger equation into Kummer's differential equation whose solution are given in the form of confluent hypergeometric function. We also discuss that in the absence of central force potential, the quantum system map into the problem of two quantum particle trapped in o…
We describe a procedure to systematically improve direct diagonalization results for few-particle systems trapped in one-dimensional harmonic potentials interacting by contact interactions. We start from the two-body problem to define a renormalization method for the interparticle interactions. The procedure is benchmarked with state-of-the-art numerical results for three and four symmetric fermions.
The Schrödinger-Newton equation has gained attention in the recent past as a nonlinear modification of the Schrödinger equation due to a gravitational self-interaction. Such a modification is expected from a fundamentally semi-classical theory of gravity, and can therefore be considered a test case for the necessity of the quantisation of the gravitational field. Here we provide a thorough study of the effects of the Schrödinger-Newton equation for a micron-sized sphere trapped in a harmonic oscillator potential. We discuss both the effect on the energy eigenstates and the dynamical behaviour …
We calculate the finite-temperature Tan's contact for N SU(2) fermions, characterized by repulsive contact interaction, trapped in a 1D harmonic confinement within a local density approximation on top of a thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz. The Tan's contact for such a system, as in the homogeneous case, displays a minimum at a very low temperature. By means of an exact canonical ensemble calculation for two fermions, we provide an explicit formula for the contact at very low temperatures that reveals that the minimum is due to the mixing of states with different exchange symmetries. In the unitary r…
System of a two-flavor mixture of ultra-cold fermions confined in a one-dimensional harmonic trap is studied in the frame of the center of mass. We present a numerical method of obtaining energetic spectra in this frame for an arbitrary mass ratio of fermionic species. We identify a specific invariant encoded in many-body correlations which enable one to determine an eigenstate of the Hamiltonian and to label excitations of the center of mass. The tool presented may be particularly useful in experimental analysis of the interparticle interactions which do not affect the center of mass excitati…
We study harmonically trapped one-dimensional atoms subjected to an equal combination of Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling induced by Raman transition. We first examine the wave function and the degeneracy of the single-particle ground state, followed by a study of two weakly interacting bosons or fermions. For the two-particle ground state, we focus on the effects of the interaction on the degeneracy, the spin density profiles, and the density-density correlation functions. Finally we show how these studies help us to understand the many-body properties of the system.
We design fast protocols to separate or recombine two ions in a segmented Paul trap. By inverse engineering the time evolution of the trapping potential composed of a harmonic and a quartic term, it is possible to perform these processes in a few microseconds without final excitation. These times are much shorter than the ones reported so far experimentally. The design is based on dynamical invariants and dynamical normal modes. Anharmonicities beyond the harmonic approximation at potential minima are taken into account perturbatively. The stability versus an unknown potential bias is also stu…
We study systems of two identical dipolar particles confined in quasi one-dimensional harmonic traps. Numerical results for the dependencies of the entanglement on the control parameters of the systems are provided and discussed in detail. In the limit of a strong interaction between the particles, the occupancies and the von Neumann entropies of the bosonic and fermionic ground states are derived in closed analytic forms by applying the harmonic approximation. The strong correlation regimes of the system with the dipolar bosons and the system with the charged ones are compared with each other…
Dynamical properties of two-component mass-imbalanced few-fermion systems confined in a one-dimensional harmonic trap following a sudden quench of interactions are studied. It is assumed that initially the system is prepared in the non-interacting ground state and then, after a sudden quench of interactions, the unitary evolution is governed by interacting many-body Hamiltonian. By careful analysis of the evolution of the Loschmidt echo, density distributions of the components, and entanglement entropy between them, the role of mass imbalance and particle number imbalance on the system's evolu…
We study the non-equilibrium dynamics of a one-dimensional Bose gas trapped by a harmonic potential for a quench from zero to infinite interaction. The different thermodynamic limits required for the equilibrium pre- and post-quench Hamiltonians are the origin of a few unexpected phenomena that have no counterparts in the translational invariant setting. We find that the dynamics is perfectly periodic with breathing time related to the strength of the trapping potential. For very short times, we observe a sudden expansion leading to an extreme dilution of the gas and to the emergence of slowly…
We apply the framework of non-equilibrium quantum thermodynamics to the physics of quenched small-sized bosonic quantum gases in a one-dimensional harmonic trap. We show that dynamical orthogonality can occur in these few-body systems with strong interactions after a quench and we find its occurrence analytically for an infinitely repulsive pair of atoms. We further show this phenomena is related to the fundamental excitations that dictate the dynamics from the spectral function. We establish a clear qualitative link between the amount of (irreversible) work performed on the system and the est…
We investigate the ground state of a few-body Bose-Fermi mixture in a one-dimensional harmonic trap with varying interaction strengths and mass ratio. A bunching-antibunching crossover of the bosonic species for increasing interspecies' repulsion is observed within our fully correlated \textit{ab~initio} studies. Interestingly, this crossover is suppressed if the bosonic repulsion exceeds a critical value which strongly depends on the mass ratio. In order to unveil the physical origin of this crossover, we employ different levels of approximations: while a species mean-field approach can accou…
We unravel the nonequilibrium quantum dynamics of two harmonically confined bosons in one spatial dimension when performing an interaction quench from finite repulsive to attractive interaction strengths and vice versa. A closed analytical form of the expansion coefficients of the time-evolved two-body wavefunction is derived, while its dynamics is determined in terms of an expansion over the postquench eigenstates. For both quench scenarios the temporal evolution is analyzed by inspecting the one- and two-body reduced density matrices and densities, the momentum distribution and the fidelity.…
We consider two bosons in a one-dimensional harmonic trap, interacting by a contact potential, and compare the exact solution of this problem to a self-consistent numerical solution by using the multiconfigurational time-dependent Hartree (MCTDH) method. We thereby benchmark the predictions of the MCTDH method with a few-body problem that has an analytical solution for the most commonly experimentally realized interaction potential in ultracold quantum gases. It is found that exact ground state energy and first order correlations are accurately reproduced by MCTDH up to the intermediate dimens…
We study the dissipative dynamics of neutral atoms in anisotropic harmonic potentials, immersed in a reservoir species that is not trapped by the harmonic potential. Considering initial motional excitation of the atoms along one direction, we explore the resulting spontaneous emission of reservoir excitations, across a range of trap parameters from strong to weak radial confinement. In different limits these processes are useful as a basis for analogies to laser cooling, or as a means to introduce controlled dissipation to many-body dynamics. For realistic experimental parameters, we analyse t…
We consider the quantum evolution of a pair of interacting atoms in a three dimensional isotropic trap where the interaction strength is quenched from one value to another. Using exact solutions of the static problem we are able to evaluate time-dependent observables such as the overlap between initial and final states and the expectation value of the separation between the two atoms. In the case where the interaction is quenched from the non-interacting regime to the strongly interacting regime, or vice versa, we are able to obtain analytic results. Examining the overlap between the initial a…
When a Bose-Einstein condensate rotates in a purely harmonic potential with an angular frequency which is close to the trap frequency, its many-body state becomes highly correlated, with the most well-known being the bosonic Laughlin state. To take into account that in a real experiment no trapping potential is ever exactly harmonic, we introduce an additional weak, quartic potential and demonstrate that the Laughlin state is highly sensitive to this extra potential. Our results imply that achieving these states experimentally is essentially impossible, at least for a macroscopic atom number.
We compute single-particle energy spectra for a one-body hamiltonian consisting of a two-dimensional deformed harmonic oscillator potential, the Rashba spin-orbit coupling and the Zeeman term. To investigate the statistical properties of the obtained spectra as functions of deformation, spin-orbit and Zeeman strengths we examine the distributions of the nearest neighbor spacings. We find that the shapes of these distributions depend strongly on the three potential parameters. We show that the obtained shapes in some cases can be well approximated with the standard Poisson, Brody and Wigner dis…
For one-dimensional systems with delta-contact interactions, the convergence of the exact-diagonalization method is tested with a basis of harmonic oscillator eigenfunctions with frequency $Ω$ optimized through the minimization of the eigenenergy of the desired level. It is shown that within the framework of this approach the well-converged results can be achieved at much smaller dimensions of the Hamiltonian matrix than with the standard approach that uses $Ω=1$. We present calculations for model systems of identical bosons with harmonic and double-well potentials. Our results show promising …
We model the dynamics of attractively interacting ultracold bosonic atoms in a quasi-one-dimensional wave-guide with additional harmonic trapping. Initially, we prepare the system in its ground state and then shift the zero of the harmonic trap and switch on an additional narrow scattering potential near the center of the trap. After colliding with the barrier twice, we propose to measure the number of atoms opposite to the initial condition. Quantum-enhanced interferometry with quantum bright solitons allows us to predict detection of an offset of the scattering potential with considerably in…
We unravel the stationary properties and the interaction quench dynamics of two bosons, confined in a two-dimensional anisotropic harmonic trap. A transcendental equation is derived giving access to the energy spectrum and revealing the dependence of the energy gaps on the anisotropy parameter. The relation between the two and the one dimensional scattering lengths as well as the Tan contacts is established. The contact, capturing the two-body short range correlations, shows an increasing tendency for a larger anisotropy. Subsequently, the interaction quench dynamics from attractive to repulsi…
