We propose a scheme utilising a quantum interference phenomenon to switch the transport of atoms in a 1D optical lattice through a site containing an impurity atom. The impurity represents a qubit which in one spin state is transparent to the probe atoms, but in the other acts as a single atom mirror. This allows a single-shot quantum non-demolition measurement of the qubit spin.
We study the dynamics of many atoms in the recently proposed Single Atom Transistor setup [A. Micheli, A. J. Daley, D. Jaksch, and P. Zoller, Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 140408 (2004)] using recently developed numerical methods. In this setup, a localised spin 1/2 impurity is used to switch the transport of atoms in a 1D optical lattice: in one state the impurity is transparent to probe atoms, but in the other acts as a single atom mirror. We calculate time-dependent currents for bosons passing the impurity atom, and find interesting many body effects. These include substantially different transport …
We propose an atomic quantum transistor based on exchange by virtual photons between two atomic systems through the control gate-atom. The quantum transistor is realized in two QED cavities coupled in nano-optical scheme. We have found novel effect in quantum dynamics of coupled three-node atomic system which provides control-SWAP(θ) processes in quantum transistor operation. New possibilities of quantum entanglement in an example of bright and dark qubit states have been demonstrated for quantum transport in the atomic chain. Potentialities of the proposed nano-optical design for quantum comp…
We propose a method of constructing cold atom analogs of the spintronic device known as the Datta-Das transistor (DDT), which despite its seminal conceptual role in spintronics, has never been successfully realized with electrons. We propose two alternative schemes for an atomic DDT, both of which are based on the experimental setup for tripod stimulated Raman adiabatic passage. Both setups involve atomic beams incident on a series of laser fields mimicking the relativistic spin orbit coupling for electrons that is the operating mechanism of the DDT.
Spin-dependent electrical injection has found useful applications in storage devices, but fully operational spin-dependent semiconductor electronics remain a challenging task because of weak spin-orbit couplings and/or strong spin relaxations. These limitations are lifted considering atoms instead of electrons or holes as spin carriers. In this emerging field of atomtronics, we demonstrate the equivalent of a Datta-Das transistor using a degenerate Fermi gas of strontium atoms as spin carriers in interaction with a tripod laser-beams scheme. We explore the dependence of spin rotation, and we i…
We report on the realization of an all-optical transistor by mapping gate and source photons into strongly interacting Rydberg excitations with different principal quantum numbers in an ultracold atomic ensemble. We obtain a record switch contrast of 40 % for a coherent gate input with mean photon number one and demonstrate attenuation of source transmission by over 10 photons with a single gate photon. We use our optical transistor to demonstrate the nondestructive detection of a single Rydberg atom with a fidelity of 0.72(4).
Recent experiments have realized an all-optical photon transistor using a cold atomic gas. This approach relies on electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in conjunction with the strong interaction among atoms excited to high-lying Rydberg states. The transistor is gated via a so-called Rydberg spinwave, in which a single Rydberg excitation is coherently shared by the whole ensemble. In its absence the incoming photon passes through the atomic ensemble by virtue of EIT while in its presence the photon is scattered rendering the atomic gas opaque. An important current challenge is to pre…
In this paper, spin-orbit coupling induced photovoltaic effect of cold atoms has been studied in a three-trap system which is an two-dimensional extension of a two-trap system reported previously. It is proposed here that atom coherent length is one of the important influence to the resistance of this photovoltaic battery. Current properties of the system for different geometrical structures of the trapping potentials are discussed. Numerical results show extension in the number of traps could cause current increase directly. Quantum master equation at finite temperature is used to treat this …
A self-consistent theoretical treatment of a triple-well atomtronic transistor circuit reveals the mechanism of gain, conditions of oscillation, and properties of the subsequent coherent matterwaves emitted by the circuit. A Bose-condensed reservoir of atoms in a large source well provides a chemical potential that drives circuit dynamics. The theory is based on the ansatz that a condensate arises in the transistor gate well as a displaced ground state, that is, one that undergoes dipole oscillation in the well. That gate atoms remain condensed and oscillating is shown to be a consequence of t…
Feshbach resonances, which allow for tuning the interactions of ultracold atoms with an external magnetic field, have been widely used to control the properties of quantum gases. We propose a~scheme for using scattering resonances as a probe for external fields, showing that by carefully tuning the parameters it is possible to reach a $10^{-5}$G (or nT) level of precision with a single pair of atoms. We show that for our collisional setup it is possible to saturate the quantum precision bound with a simple measurement protocol.
We propose a realization of the quantum transistor for coherent light fields for the fibre-coupled microdisk cavities. We demonstrate by combining numerical and analytical methods that both in strong coupling and bad cavity limits it is possible to change system's behaviour from being fully transparent to being fully reflective by varying the amplitude of the external control field. We remark that tuning the amplitude of the control field is significantly easier in the experimental setting than tuning cavity-atom coupling strength which was suggested in [Phys. Rev. A 90, 053822 (2014)] for two…
Continued dimensional scaling of semiconductor devices has driven information technology into vastly diverse applications. As the size of devices approaches fundamental limits, metrology techniques with nanometre resolution and three-dimensional (3D) capabilities are desired for device optimisation. For example, the performance of an ultra-scaled transistor can be strongly influenced by the local electric field and strain. Here we study the spectral response of single erbium ions to applied electric field and strain in a silicon ultra-scaled transistor. Stark shifts induced by both the overall…
We charge an individual donor with electrons stored in a quantum dot in its proximity. A Silicon quantum device containing a single Arsenic donor and an electrostatic quantum dot in parallel is realized in a nanometric field effect transistor. The different coupling capacitances of the donor and the quantum dot with the control and the back gates are exploited to generate a relative rigid shift of their energy spectrum as a function of the back gate voltage, causing the crossing of the energy levels. We observe the sequential tunneling through the $D^{2-}$ and the $D^{3-}$ energy levels of the…
We theoretically studied the implementation of a quantum memory and an optical transistor in a system composed by a single atom trapped inside a high finesse cavity. In order to store and map the quantum state of an input pulse onto internal states of the single atom (quantum memory) we employ the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) phenomenon (which can work out as an optical transistor) where the information can be transferred to the dark state of the atom modelled by a three-level system in a Λ-type configuration. In our model we consider a suitable temporal shape for the control…
We derive a quantum master equation to treat quantum systems interacting with multiple reservoirs. The formalism is used to investigate atomic transport across a variety of lattice configurations. We demonstrate how the behavior of an electronic diode, a field-effect transistor, and a bipolar junction transistor can be realized with neutral, ultracold atoms trapped in optical lattices. An analysis of the current fluctuations is provided for the case of the atomtronic diode. Finally, we show that it is possible to demonstrate AND logic gate behavior in an optical lattice.
We consider the single photon transistor in coupled cavity system of resonators interacting with multilevel superconducting artificial atom simultaneously. Effective single mode transformation is used for the diagonalization of the the hamiltonian and impedance matching in terms of the normal modes. Storage and transmission of the incident field are described by the interactions between the cavities controlling the atomic transitions of lowest lying states. Rabi splitting of vacuum induced multiphoton transitions is considered in input/output relations by the quadrature operators in the absenc…
We present a realistic scheme for how to construct a single-photon transistor where the presence or absence of a single microwave photon controls the propagation of a subsequent strong signal signal field. The proposal is designed to work with existing superconducting artificial atoms coupled to cavities. We study analytically and numerically the efficiency and the gain of our proposal and show that current transmon qubits allow for error probabilities ~1% and gains of the order of hundreds.
The realization of an all-optical transistor where one 'gate' photon controls a 'source' light beam, is a long-standing goal in optics. By stopping a light pulse in an atomic ensemble contained inside an optical resonator, we realize a device in which one stored gate photon controls the resonator transmission of subsequently applied source photons. A weak gate pulse induces bimodal transmission distribution, corresponding to zero and one gate photons. One stored gate photon produces fivefold source attenuation, and can be retrieved from the atomic ensemble after switching more than one source …
We propose and analyze a scheme for conditional state transfer in a Heisenberg $XXZ$ spin chain which realizes a quantum spin transistor. In our scheme, the absence or presence of a control spin excitation in the central gate part of the spin chain results in either perfect transfer of an arbitrary state of a target spin between the weakly coupled input and output ports, or its complete blockade at the input port. We also present a possible realization of the corresponding spin chain with a one-dimensional ensemble of cold atoms with strong contact interactions.
Removing exactly one photon from an arbitrary input pulse is an elementary operation in quantum optics and enables applications in quantum information processing and quantum simulation. Here we demonstrate a deterministic single-photon absorber based on the saturation of an optically thick free-space medium by a single photon due to Rydberg blockade. Single-photon subtraction adds a new component to the Rydberg quantum optics toolbox, which already contains photonic logic building-blocks such as single-photon sources, switches, transistors, and conditional $π$-phase shifts. Our approach is sca…
Mapping the strong interaction between Rydberg atoms onto single photons via electromagnetically induced transparency enables manipulation of light on the single photon level and novel few-photon devices such as all-optical switches and transistors operated by individual photons. Here, we demonstrate experimentally that Stark-tuned Förster resonances can substantially increase this effective interaction between individual photons. This technique boosts the gain of a single-photon transistor to over 100, enhances the non-destructive detection of single Rydberg atoms to a fidelity beyond 0.8, an…
We propose a microwave frequency single photon transistor which can operate under continuous wave probing, and represents an efficient single microwave photon detector. It can be realized using an impedance matched system of a three level artificial ladder-type atom coupled to two microwave cavities connected to input/output waveguides. Using a classical drive on the upper transition, we find parameter space where a single photon control pulse incident on one of cavities can be fully absorbed into hybridized excited states. This subsequently leads to series of quantum jumps in the upper manifo…
