In an electromagnetic cavity, photons can be created from the vacuum state by changing the cavity's properties with time. Using a simple model based on a massless scalar field, we analyze resonant photon creation induced by the time-dependent conductivity of a thin semiconductor film contained in the cavity. This time dependence may be achieved by irradiating periodically the film with short laser pulses. This setup offers several experimental advantages over the case of moving mirrors.
We propose two robust schemes to generate controllable (deterministic) atomic W-states of three three-level atoms interacting with an optical cavity and a laser beam. Losses due to atomic spontaneous emissions and to cavity decay are efficiently suppressed by employing adiabatic passage technique and appropriately designed atom-field couplings. In these schemes the three atoms traverse the cavity-mode and the laser beam and become entangled in the free space outside the cavity.
We use the approach of "transitionless quantum driving" proposed by Berry to construct shortcuts to the population transfer and the creation of maximal entanglement between two $Λ$-type atoms based on the cavity quantum electronic dynamics (CQED) system. An effective Hamiltonian is designed by resorting to an auxiliary excited level, a classical driving field and an extra cavity field mode to supplement or substitute the original reference Hamiltonian, and steer the system evolution along its instantaneous eigenstates in an arbitrarily short time, speeding up the rate of population transfer an…
Practical schemes for creation of multi-mode squeezed (entangled) states of atomic ensembles located inside a high-Q ring cavity are discussed. It is assumed that the cavity is composed of two degenerate mutually counter-propagating modes that can simultaneously couple to the atomic ensembles with the same coupling strengths. The ensembles are composed of ultra-cold atoms which are modeled as four-level systems driven by two laser fields, both co-propagating with one of the cavity directions. We illustrate a procedure that constructs multi-mode squeezed states from the vacuum by a unitary tran…
We present for the first time numerical results for the particle (photon) creation rate of Dynamical Casimir effect (DCE) radiation in a resonant cylindrical microwave cavity. Based on recent experimental proposals, we model an irradiated semiconducting diaphragm (SCD) using a time dependent 'plasma sheet' where we show that the number of photons created for the TM_{011} mode is considerably enhanced even for low laser powers (of microjoule order). Conversely to the moving mirror case, we also show that the fundamental TM mode (TM_{010}) is not excited for an irradiated plasma sheet. We show t…
We investigate the dynamical Casimir effect and its detection with Rydberg atoms. The photons are created in a resonant cavity with a plasma mirror of a semiconductor slab which is irradiated by periodic laser pulses. The canonical Hamiltonian is derived for the creation and annihilation operators showing the explicit time-variation in the couplings, which originates from the external configuration such as a nonstationary plasma mirror. The number of created photons is evaluated as squeezing from the Heisenberg equations with the Hamiltonian. Then, the detection of the photons as the atomic ex…
We present a dissipative protocol to engineer two $^{87}Rb$ atoms into a form of three-dimensional entangled state via spontaneous emission. The combination of coupling between ground states via microwave fields and dissipation induced by spontaneous emission make the current scheme deterministic and a stationary entangled state can always be achieved without state initialization. Moreover, this scheme can be straightforwardly generalized to preparation of an $N$-dimensional entangled state in principle.
The rate of particle creation in a resonantly oscillating cavity is known to be approximately constant at large evolution times. Employing the Schwinger-Keldysh diagrammatic technique, we show that nonlinear interactions generate nonzero quantum averages and significantly enhance this rate. To illustrate this phenomenon, we consider a massless scalar field with a quartic interaction in a one-dimensional cavity with perfectly reflecting walls oscillating at twice the fundamental frequency.
We investigate the dynamical Casimir effect for a one-dimensional resonant cavity, with one oscillating mirror. Specifically, we study the discrete spectrum of created particles in a region of frequencies above the oscillation frequency $ω_0$ of the mirror. We focus our investigation on an oscillation time equal to $2L_0/c$, where $L_0$ is the initial and final length of the cavity, and $c$ is the speed of light. For this oscillation duration, a field mode, after perturbed by the moving mirror, never meets this mirror in motion again, which allows us to exclude this effect of re-interaction on…
The spontaneous creation and persistence of ground-state coherence in an ensemble of intracavity Rb atoms has been observed as a quantum beat. Our system realizes a quantum eraser, where the detection of a first photon prepares a superposition of ground-state Zeeman sublevels, while detection of a second erases the stored information. Beats appear in the time-delayed photon-photon coincidence rate (intensity correlation function). We study the beats theoretically and experimentally as a function of system parameters, and find them remarkably robust against perturbations such as spontaneous emi…
We have investigated the effect of counter-rotating terms on the dynamics of entanglement and quantum discord between two identical atoms interacting with a lossy single mode cavity field for a system initially in a vacuum state. The counter-rotating terms are found to lead to steady states in the long time limit which can have high quantum discord, but have no entanglement. The effect of cavity decay rate on this steady state quantum discord has been also investigated, surprisingly, the increase in cavity decay rate is found to both enhance and maximize the steady quantum discord for separabl…
We show that an atom can be coupled to a mechanical oscillator via quantum vacuum fluctuations of a cavity field enabling energy transfer processes between them. In a hybrid quantum system consisting of a cavity resonator with a movable mirror and an atom, these processes are dominated by two pair-creation mechanisms: the counterrotating (atom-cavity system) and dynamical Casimir interaction terms (optomechanical system). Because of these two pair-creation mechanisms, the resonant atom-mirror coupling is the result of high-order virtual processes with different transition paths well described …
In this paper we find that the second law of thermodynamics requires an upper limit of the conductivity. To begin with we present an ideal model, the cavity with a mobile plate, for studying the thermodynamic properties of radiation field. It is shown that the pressure fluctuation of thermal radiation field in the cavity leads to the random motion of the plate and photons would be generated by dynamical Casimir effect. Meanwhile, such photons obey a non-thermal distribution. Then, to ensure the second law of thermodynamics, there must be a upper limit of the conductivity.
We explore the possibility to entangle an excitonic two-level system in a semiconductor quantum dot (QD) with a cavity defined on a photonic crystal by sweeping the cavity frequency across its resonance with the exciton transition. The dynamic cavity detuning is established by a radio frequency surface acoustic wave (SAW). It induces Landau-Zener (LZ) transitions between the excitonic and the photonic degrees of freedom and thereby creates a superposition state. We optimize this scheme by using tailored Fourier-synthesized SAW pulses with up to five harmonics. The theoretical study is performe…
We report the realisation of a high-finesse open-access cavity array, tailored towards the creation of multiple coherent light-matter interfaces within a compact environment. We describe the key technical developments put in place to fabricate such a system, comprising the creation of tapered pyramidal substrates and an in-house laser machining setup. Cavities made from these mirrors are characterised, by laser spectroscopy, to possess similar optical properties to state-of-the-art fibre-tip cavities, but offer a compelling route towards improved performance, even when used to support only a s…
We examine nonclassical properties of the field states generated by applying the photon annihilation-then-creation operation (AC) and creation-then-annihilation operation (CA) to the thermal and coherent states. Effects of repeated applications of AC and of CA are also studied. We also discuss experimental schemes to realize AC and CA with a cavity system using atom-field interactions.
We study photon creation in a cavity with two perfectly conducting moving mirrors. We derive the dynamic equations of the modes and study different situations concerning various movements of the walls, such as translational or breathing modes. We can even apply our approach to one or three dimensional cavities and reobtain well known results of cavities with one moving mirror. We compare the numerical results with analytical predictions and discuss the effects of the intermode coupling in detail as well as the non perturbative regime. We also study the time evolution of the energy density as w…
We apply the continuous variable approach to study entangled dynamics of coupled harmonic oscillators interacting with a thermal reservoir and to a deterministic creation of entanglement in an atomic ensemble located inside a high-Q ring cavity. In the case of harmonic oscillators, we show that a suitable unitary transformation of the position and momentum operators transforms the system to a set of independent harmonic oscillators with only one of them coupled to the reservoir. Working in the Wigner representation of the density operator, we find that the covariance matrix has a block diagona…
We analyse particle creation and mode mixing for a quantum field in an accelerated cavity, assuming small accelerations but allowing arbitrary velocities, travel times and travel distances, and in particular including the regime of relativistic velocities. As an application, we identify a desktop experimental scenario where the mode mixing resonance frequency in linear sinusoidal motion or in uniform circular motion is significantly below the particle creation resonance frequencies of the Dynamical Casimir Effect, and arguably at the threshold of current technology. The mode mixing acts as a b…

对于两个耦合到单模腔场的二能级原子,在腔场的驱动和强阻尼作用下,用未调制的驱动激光照射系统,可以实现稳态纠缠[S.Schneider,G. J. Milburn Phys. Rev A 65,042107,2002]。
Some of the most prominent theoretical predictions of modern times, e.g., the Unruh effect, Hawking radiation, and gravity-assisted particle creation, are supported by the fact that various quantum constructs like particle content and vacuum fluctuations of a quantum field are observer-dependent. Despite being fundamental in nature, these predictions have not yet been experimentally verified because one needs extremely strong gravity (or acceleration) to bring them within the existing experimental resolution. In this Letter, we demonstrate that a post-Newtonian rotating atom inside a far-detun…
Sign-changing interactions constitute a crucial ingredient in the creation of frustrated many-body systems such as spin glasses. We present here the demonstration of a photon-mediated sign-changing interaction between Bose-Einstein condensed (BEC) atoms in a confocal cavity. The interaction between two atoms is of an unusual, nonlocal form proportional to the cosine of the inner product of the atoms' position vectors. This interaction arises from the differing Gouy phase shifts of the cavity's degenerate modes. Moreover, these Gouy phase anomalies induce an extra pattern of Z_2-symmetry-breaki…
We study the dynamical Casimir effect in a double superconducting cavity in a circuit quantum electrodynamics architecture. Parameters in the quantum circuit are chosen in such a way the superconducting cavity can mimic a double cavity, formed by two perfectly conducting outer walls and a dielectric one, with arbitrary permittivity separating both halves. We undertake a spectral analysis of the cavity, showing that the spectrum varies significantly depending on the values of the susceptibility of the dielectric mirror and the relative lengths of both cavities. We study the creation of photons …
We consider the ground state of an electron gas embedded in a quantum gyrotropic cavity. We show that the light-matter interaction leads to a nontrivial topology of the many-body electron-photon wave function characterized by a nonzero Berry curvature. Physically, the latter manifests as the anomalous Hall effect, appearance of equilibrium edge/surface currents and orbital magnetization induced by vacuum fluctuations. Remarkably, closed analytical expressions for the anomalous Hall conductivity and macroscopic magnetization are obtained for the interacting many-body case.
Recently, the creation of photonic Landau levels in a twisted cavity has been demonstrated in Nature \textbf{534}, 671 (2016). Here we propose a scheme to adiabatically transfer flux quanta in multiples of $3\hbar$ simultaneously to all cavity photons by coupling the photons through flux-threaded cones present in such cavity setup. The flux transfer is achieved using external light fields with orbital angular momentum and a near-resonant dense atomic medium as mediator. Furthermore, coupling the cavity fields to a Rydberg state in a configuration supporting electromagnetically induced transpar…
We report a 65MHz-bandwidth triangular-shaped optical parametric oscillator (OPO) for squeezed vacuum generation at 860nm. The triangle structure of our OPO enables the round-trip length to reach 45mm as a ring cavity, which provides a counter circulating optical path available for introducing a probe beam or generating another squeezed vacuum. Hence our OPO is suitable for the applications in high-speed quantum information processing where two or more squeezed vacua form a complicated interferometer, like continuous-variable quantum teleportation. With a homemade, broadband and low-loss homod…
The manipulation of individual, mobile quanta is a key goal of quantum communication; to achieve this, nonlinear phenomena in open systems can play a critical role. We show theoretically that a variety of strong quantum nonlinear phenomena occur in a completely open one-dimensional waveguide coupled to an N-type four-level system (4LS). We focus on photon blockade and the creation of single photon states in the absence of a cavity. Many-body bound states appear due to the strong photon-photon correlation mediated by the 4LS. These bound states cause photon blockade which can generate a sub-Poi…
In cavity optomechanics, light is used to control mechanical motion. A central goal of the field is achieving single-photon strong coupling, which would enable the creation of quantum superposition states of motion. Reaching this limit requires significant improvements in optomechanical coupling and cavity coherence. Here we introduce an optomechanical architecture consisting of a silicon nitride membrane coupled to a three-dimensional superconducting microwave cavity. Exploiting their large quality factors, we achieve an optomechanical cooperativity of 146,000 and perform sideband cooling of …
We propose a scheme involving a Cooper pair transistor (CPT) embedded in a superconducting microwave cavity, where the CPT serves as a charge tunable quantum inductor to facilitate ultra-strong coupling between photons in the cavity and a nano- to meso-scale mechanical resonator. The mechanical resonator is capacitively coupled to the CPT, such that mechanical displacements of the resonator cause a shift in the CPT inductance and hence the cavity's resonant frequency. The amplification provided by the CPT is sufficient for the zero point motion of the mechanical resonator alone to cause a sign…
Highly nonclassical quantum states of light, characterized by Wigner functions with negative values, have been created so far only in a heralded fashion. In this case, the desired output emerges rarely and randomly from a quantum-state generator. An important example is the heralded production of high-purity single-photon states, typically based on some nonlinear optical interaction. In contrast, on-demand single-photon sources were also reported, exploiting the quantized level structure of matter systems. These sources, however, lead to highly impure output states, composed mostly of vacuum. …
We present an analytical and numerical analysis of the particle creation in a cavity ended with two SQUIDs, both subjected to time dependent magnetic fields. In the linear and lossless regime, the problem can be modeled by a free quantum field in $1+1$ dimensions, in the presence of boundary conditions that involve a time dependent linear combination of the field and its spatial and time derivatives. We consider a situation in which the boundary conditions at both ends are periodic functions of time, focusing on interesting features as the dependence of the rate of particle creation with the c…
The existence of vacuum fluctuations is one of the most important predictions of modern quantum field theory. In the vacuum state, fluctuations occurring at different frequencies are uncorrelated. However, if a parameter in the Lagrangian of the field is modulated by an external pump, vacuum fluctuations stimulate spontaneous downconversion processes, creating squeezing between modes symmetric with respect to half of the frequency of the pump. Here we show that by double parametric pumping of a superconducting microwave cavity, it is possible to generate another fundamental type of correlation…
