We consider a generic elementary gate sequence which is needed to implement a general quantum gate acting on n qubits -- a unitary transformation with 4^n degrees of freedom. For synthesizing the gate sequence, a method based on the so-called cosine-sine matrix decomposition is presented. The result is optimal in the number of elementary one-qubit gates, 4^n, and scales more favorably than the previously reported decompositions requiring 4^n-2^n+1 controlled NOT gates.
Previous schemes of nonadiabatic holonomic quantum computation were focused mainly on realizing a universal set of elementary gates. Multiqubit controlled gates could be built by decomposing them into a series of the universal gates. In this article, we propose an approach for realizing nonadiabatic holonomic multiqubit controlled gates in which a $(n+1)$-qubit controlled-$(\boldsymbol{\mathrm{n}\cdot \mathrmσ})$ gate is realized by $(2n-1)$ basic operations instead of decomposing it into the universal gates, whereas an $(n+1)$-qubit controlled arbitrary rotation gate can be obtained by combin…
We propose an alternative scheme of shortcuts to quantum phase gate in a much shorter time based on the approach of Lewis-Riesenfeld invariants in cavity quantum electronic dynamics (QED) systems. This scheme can be used to perform one-qubit phase gate, two-qubit controlled phase gate and also multiqubit controlled phase gate. The strict numerical simulation for some quantum gates are given, and demonstrate that the total operation time of our scheme is shorter than previous schemes and very robustness against decoherence.
Quantum holonomic gates hold built-in resilience to local noises and provide a promising approach for implementing fault-tolerant quantum computation. We propose to realize high-fidelity holonomic $(N+1)$-qubit controlled gates using Rydberg atoms confined in optical arrays or superconducting circuits. We identify the scheme, deduce the effective multi-body Hamiltonian, and determine the working condition of the multiqubit gate. Uniquely, the multiqubit gate is immune to systematic errors, i.e., laser parameter fluctuations and motional dephasing, as the $N$ control atoms largely remain in the…
Non-local higher-energy auxiliary states have been successfully used to entangle pairs of qubits in different quantum computing systems. Typically a longer-span non-local state or sequential application of few-qubit entangling gates are needed to produce a non-trivial multiqubit gate. In many cases a single non-local state that span over the entire system is difficult to use due to spectral crowding or impossible to have. At the same time, many multiqubit systems can naturally develop a network of multiple non-local higher-energy states that span over few qubits each. We show that continuous t…
We propose how to realize a multiqubit tunable phase gate of one qubit simultaneously controlling $n$ qubits with four-level quantum systems in a cavity or coupled to a resonator. Each of the $n$ two-qubit controlled-phase (CP) gates involved in this multiqubit phase gate has a shared control qubit but a {\it different} target qubit. In this propose, the two lowest levels of each system represent the two logical states of a qubit while the two higher-energy intermediate levels are used for the gate implementation. The method presented here operates essentially by creating a single photon throu…
We propose a one-step scheme to implement a multiqubit controlled phase gate of one qubit simultaneously controlling multiple qubits with three-level atoms at distant nodes in coupled cavity arrays. The selective qubit-qubit couplings are achieved by adiabatically eliminating the atomic excited states and photonic states and the required phase shifts between the control qubit and any target qubit can be realized through suitable choices of the parameters of the external fields. Moreover, the effective model is robust against decoherence because neither the atoms nor the field modes during the …
We examine the detailed scenario for implementing n-control-qubit Toffoli gates and select gates on ion-trap quantum computers, especially those that shuttle ions into interaction zones. We determine expected performance of these gates with realistic parameters for an ion-trap quantum computer and taking into account the time variation of the exchange integrals. This allows us to estimate the errors due to spin-phonon entanglement as well. While there are challenges with implementing these gates, because their performance always has some degree of error, they should be feasible on current hard…
The ability to perform gates in multiqubit systems that are robust to noise is of crucial importance for the advancement of quantum information technologies. However, finding control pulses that cancel noise while performing a gate is made difficult by the intractability of the time-dependent Schrodinger equation, especially in multiqubit systems. Here, we show that this issue can be sidestepped by using a formalism in which the cumulative error during a gate is represented geometrically as a curve in a multi-dimensional Euclidean space. Cancellation of noise errors to leading order correspond…
The cooling effects of a quantum LC circuit coupled inductively with an ensemble of artificial qubits are investigated. The particles may decay independently or collectively through their interaction with the environmental vacuum electromagnetic field reservoir. For appropriate bath temperatures and the resonator's quality factors, we demonstrate an effective cooling well below the thermal background. In particular, we found that for larger samples the cooling efficiency is better for independent qubits. However, the cooling process can be faster for collectively interacting particles.
We propose a scheme to generate Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) state for N superconducting qubits in a circuit QED system. By sinusoidally modulating the qubit-qubit coupling, a synthetic magnetic field has been made which broken the time-reversal symmetry of the system. Directional rotation of qubit excitation can be realized in a three-qubit loop under the artificial magnetic field. Based on the special quality that the rotation of qubit excitation has different direction for single- and double-excitation loops, we can generate three-qubit GHZ state and extend this preparation method to a…
We propose a way to realize a multiqubit tunable phase gate of one qubit simultaneously controlling n target qubits with atoms in cavity QED. In this proposal, classical pulses interact with atoms outside a cavity only, thus the experimental challenge of applying a pulse to an intra-cavity single atom without affecting other atoms in the same cavity is avoided. Because of employing a first-order large detuning, the gate can be performed fast when compared with the use of a second-order large detuning. Furthermore, the gate operation time is independent of the number of qubits. This proposal is…
We propose a scheme to realize a multiqubit tunable phase gate in a circuit QED setup where two resonators, each coupling with a qudit, are interconnected to a common qudit (d=4). In this proposal, only two levels of each qudit serve as the logical states and the other two levels are used for the gate realization. The proposal is efficient and simple because only a classical microwave pulse is needed, no matter how many qudits are involved, which significantly reduces experimental difficulty. In a nonresonant case, the tunable phase gate can be achieved readily, while under the resonant condit…
We review a time-dependent version of the Schrieffer-Wolff transformation that accounts for real-time control of system parameters, soon to be rendered possible on a broad basis due to technical progress. The dispersive regime of $N$ multilevel systems coupled to a cavity via a Jaynes-Cummings interaction is extended to the most general case. As a concrete example we rigorously apply the technique to dispersive two-qubit gates in a superconducting architecture, showing that fidelities based on previous models are off by up to $10^{-2}$, which is certainly relevant for high-fidelity gates compa…
We propose a theoretical protocol to implement multiqubit geometric gates (i.e., the Mølmer-Sørensen gate) using photonic cat-state qubits. These cat-state qubits stored in high-$Q$ resonators are promising for hardware-efficient universal quantum computing. Specifically, in the limit of strong two-photon drivings, phase-flip errors of the cat-state qubits are effectively suppressed, leaving only a bit-flip error to be corrected. Because this dominant error commutes with the evolution operator, our protocol preserves the error bias, and, thus, can lower the code-capacity threshold for error co…

We introduce a method for finding the required control parameters for a quantum computer that yields the desired quantum algorithm without invoking elementary gates. We concentrate on the Josephson charge-qubit model, but the scenario is readily extended to other physical realizations. Our strategy is to numerically find any desired double- or triple-qubit gate. The motivation is the need to significantly accelerate quantum algorithms in order to fight decoherence.
Quantum circuit depth minimization is critical for practical applications of circuit-based quantum computation. In this work, we present a systematic procedure to decompose multiqubit controlled unitary gates, which is essential in many quantum algorithms, to controlled-NOT and single-qubit gates with which the quantum circuit depth only increases linearly with the number of control qubits. Our algorithm does not require any ancillary qubits and achieves a quadratic reduction of the circuit depth against known methods. We show the advantage of our algorithm with proof-of-principle experiments …
Due to its potential for implementing a scalable quantum computer, multiqubit Toffoli gate lies in the heart of quantum information processing. In this article, we demonstrate a multiqubit blockade gate with atoms arranged in a three-dimension spheroidal array. The gate performance is greatly improved by the method of optimizing control-qubit distributions on the spherical surface via evolutionary algorithm, which leads to an enhanced asymmetric Rydberg blockade. This spheroidal configuration, not only arises a well preservation for the dipole blockade energy between arbitrary control-target p…
We present a robust protocol for implementing high-fidelity multiqubit controlled phase gates $(C^kZ)$ on neutral atom qubits coupled to highly excited Rydberg states. Our approach is based on extending adiabatic rapid passage to two-photon excitation via a short-lived intermediate excited state common to alkali-atom Rydberg experiments, accounting for the full impact of spontaneous decay and differential AC Stark shifts from the complete manifold of hyperfine excited states. We evaluate and optimize gate performance, concluding that for Cs and currently available laser frequencies and powers,…
We present a novel method to realize a multi-target-qubit controlled phase gate with one microwave photonic qubit simultaneously controlling $n-1$ target microwave photonic qubits. This gate is implemented with $n$ microwave cavities coupled to a superconducting flux qutrit. Each cavity hosts a microwave photonic qubit, whose two logic states are represented by the vacuum state and the single photon state of a single cavity mode, respectively. During the gate operation, the qutrit remains in the ground state and thus decoherence from the qutrit is greatly suppressed. This proposal requires onl…
We prove that a unitary matrix has an exact representation over the Clifford+T gate set with local ancillas if and only if its entries are in the ring Z[1/sqrt(2),i]. Moreover, we show that one ancilla always suffices. These facts were conjectured by Kliuchnikov, Maslov, and Mosca. We obtain an algorithm for synthesizing a exact Clifford+T circuit from any such n-qubit operator. We also characterize the Clifford+T operators that can be represented without ancillas.
We demonstrate the applicability of a universal gate set in the parity encoding, which is a dual to the standard gate model, by exploring several quantum gate algorithms such as the quantum Fourier transform and quantum addition. Embedding these algorithms in the parity encoding reduces the circuit depth compared to conventional gate-based implementations while keeping the multiqubit gate counts comparable. We further propose simple implementations of multiqubit gates in tailored encodings and an efficient strategy to prepare graph states.
Optimal implementation of quantum gates is crucial for designing a quantum computer. We consider the matrix representation of an arbitrary multiqubit gate. By ordering the basis vectors using the Gray code, we construct the quantum circuit which is optimal in the sense of fully controlled single-qubit gates and yet is equivalent with the multiqubit gate. In the second step of the optimization, superfluous control bits are eliminated, which eventually results in a smaller total number of the elementary gates. In our scheme the number of controlled NOT gates is $O(4^n)$ which coincides with the …
We analyze a multiqubit circuit QED system in the regime where the qubit-photon coupling dominates over the system's bare energy scales. Under such conditions a manifold of low-energy states with a high degree of entanglement emerges. Here we describe a time-dependent protocol for extracting these quantum correlations and converting them into well-defined multipartite entangled states of noninteracting qubits. Based on a combination of various ultrastrong-coupling effects, the protocol can be operated in a fast and robust manner, while still being consistent with experimental constraints on sw…
In this paper, we propose a scheme to realize three-qubit quantum phase gate of one qubit simultaneously controlling two target qubits using four-level superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) coupled to a superconducting resonator. The two lowest levels |0> and |1> of each SQUID are used to represent logical states while the higher energy levels |2> and |3> are utilized for gate realization. Our scheme does not require adiabatic passage, second order detuning, and the adjustment of the level spacing during gate operation which reduce the gate time significantly. The scheme is gen…
We describe in detail the application of four qubit cluster states, built on the simultaneous entanglement of two photons in the degrees of freedom of polarization and linear momentum, for the realization of a complete set of basic one-way quantum computation operations. These consist of arbitrary single qubit rotations, either probabilistic or deterministic, and simple two qubit gates, such as a c-not gate for equatorial qubits and a universal c-phase (CZ) gate acting on arbitrary target qubits. Other basic computation operations, such as the Grover's search and the Deutsch's algorithms, have…

Cavity-based large scale quantum information processing (QIP) may involve multiple cavities and require performing various quantum logic operations on qubits distributed in different cavities. Geometric-phase-based quantum computing has drawn much attention recently, which offers advantages against inaccuracies and local fluctuations. In addition, multiqubit gates are particularly appealing and play important roles in QIP. We here present a simple and efficient scheme for realizing a multi-target-qubit unconventional geometric phase gate in a multi-cavity system. This multiqubit phase gate has…
In this paper, we propose a scheme to realize three-qubit controlled phase gate and multiqubit controlled-NOT gate of one qubit simultaneously controlling n target qubit with four level quantum system in a cavity. Adjustment of level spacing during the gates implementation is not required. Implementation time for multiqubit controlled NOT gate is independent of number of qubit. Three-qubit phase gate is generalized to n-qubit phase gate with multiple control qubit and the number of steps (complexity) reduces linearly as compare to conventional gate decomposition method. Our scheme can be appli…
Multiqubit entanglement is extremely important to perform truly secure quantum optical communication and computing operations. However, the efficient generation of long-range entanglement over extended time periods between multiple qubits randomly distributed in a photonic system remains an outstanding challenge. This constraint is mainly due to the detrimental effects of decoherence and dephasing. To alleviate this issue, we present engineered epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) nanostructures that can maximize the coherence of light-matter interactions at room temperature. We investigate a practical ENZ…
Quantum computation has demonstrated advantages over classical computation for special hard problems, where a set of universal quantum gates is essential. Geometric phases, which have built-in resilience to local noise, have been used to construct quantum gates with excellent performance. However, this advantage has been smeared in previous schemes. Here, we propose a state-independent nonadiabatic geometric quantum-gate scheme that is able to realize a more fully geometric gate than previous approaches, allowing for the cancelation of dynamical phases accumulated by an arbitrary state. Numeri…
Fault-tolerant implementation of quantum gates is one of preconditions for realizing quantum computation. The platform of Rydberg atoms is one of the most promising candidates for achieving quantum computation. We propose to implement a controlled-$Z$ gate on Rydberg atoms where an amplitude-modulated field is employed to induce Rydberg antiblockade. Gate robustness against the fluctuations in the Rydberg-Rydberg interaction can be largely enhanced by adjusting amplitude-modulated field. Furthermore, we introduce a Landau-Zener-Stückelberg transition on the target atom so as to improve the gat…
Time reversal and spin flip are discrete symmetry operations of substantial import to quantum information and quantum computation. Spin flip arises in the context of separability, quantification of entanglement and the construction of Universal NOT gates. The present work investigates the relationship between the quantum state of a multiqubit system represented by the Discrete Wigner Function (DWFs) and its spin-flipped counterpart. The two are shown to be related through a Hadamard matrix that is independent of the choice of the quantum net used for the tomographic reconstruction of the DWF. …
Several techniques have been recently introduced to mitigate errors in near-term quantum computers without the overhead required by quantum error correcting codes. While most of the focus has been on gate errors, measurement errors are significantly larger than gate errors on some platforms. A widely used {\it transition matrix error mitigation} (TMEM) technique uses measured transition probabilities between initial and final classical states to correct subsequently measured data. However from a rigorous perspective, the noisy measurement should be calibrated with perfectly prepared initial st…

A quantum network is a promising quantum many-body system because of its tailored geometry and controllable interaction. Here, we propose an external control scheme for the qubit-photon interaction and multiqubit reset in a dissipative quantum network, which comprises superconducting circuit chains with microwave drives and filter-filter couplings. The traditional multiqubit reset of the quantum network requires physically disconnected qubits to prevent their entanglement. However, we use an original effect of dissipation, i.e., consuming the entanglement generated by qubits' interaction, to a…
The increasing success of classical generative adversarial networks (GANs) has inspired several quantum versions of GANs. Fully quantum mechanical applications of such quantum GANs have been limited to one- and two-qubit systems. In this paper, we investigate the entangling quantum GAN (EQ-GAN) for multiqubit learning. We show that the EQ-GAN can learn a circuit more efficiently compared with a SWAP test. We also consider the EQ-GAN for learning eigenstates that are variational quantum eigensolver (VQE)-approximated, and find that it generates excellent overlap matrix elements when learning VQ…
Ultrastrongly coupled quantum hardware may increase the speed of quantum state processing in distributed architectures, allowing to approach fault-tolerant threshold. We show that circuit QED architectures in the ultrastrong coupling regime, which has been recently demonstrated with superconductors, may show substantial speedup for a class of adiabatic protocols resilient to the main source of errors, namely the interplay of dynamical Casimir effect and cavity losses.
A scheme for coupling superconducting charge qubits via a one-dimensional superconducting transmission line resonator is proposed. The qubits are working at their optimal points, where they are immune to the charge noise and possess long decoherence time. Analysis on the dynamical time evolution of the interaction is presented, which is shown to be insensitive to the initial state of the resonator field. This scheme enables fast gate operation and is readily scalable to multiqubit scenario.
The cross-Kerr nonlinearity (XKNL) effect can induce efficient photon interactions in principle with which photonic multiqubit gates can be performed using far fewer physical resources than linear optical schemes. Unfortunately, it is extremely challenging to generate giant cross-Kerr nonlinearities. In recent years, much effort has been made to perform multiqubit gates via weak XKNLs. However, the required nonlinearity strengths are still difficult to achieve in the experiment. We here propose an XKNL-based scheme for realizing a two-photon polarization-parity gate, a universal two-qubit gate…
