Quantum chaos is linked to Brownian diffusion of the underlying quantum energy level-spacing sequences. The level-spacings viewed as functions of their order execute random walks which imply uncorrelated random increments of the level-spacings while the integrability to chaos transition becomes a change from Poisson to Gauss statistics for the level-spacing increments. This universal nature of quantum chaotic spectral correlations is numerically demonstrated for eigenvalues from random tight binding lattices and for zeros of the Riemann zeta function.
We study the ensemble of complex symmetric matrices. The ensemble is useful in the study of effect of dissipation on systems with time reversal invariance. We consider the nearest neighbor spacing distribution and spacing ratio to investigate the fluctuation statistics and show that these statistics are similar to that of dissipative chaotic systems with time reversal invariance. We show that, unlike cubic repulsion in eigenvalues of Ginibre matrices, these ensemble exhibits a weaker repulsion. The nearest neighbor spacing distribution exhibits $P(s) \propto -s^3 \log s$ for small spacings. We…
Typical eigenstates of quantum systems, whose classical limit is chaotic, are well approximated as random states. Corresponding eigenvalue spectra is modeled through appropriate ensemble of random matrix theory. However, a small subset of states violate this principle and display eigenstate localization, a counter-intuitive feature known to arise due to purely quantum or semiclassical effects. In the spectrum of chaotic systems, the localized and random states interact with one another and modifies the spectral statistics. In this work, a $3 \times 3$ random matrix model is used to obtain exac…
The phenomenon of quantum localization in classically chaotic eigenstates is one of the main issues in quantum chaos (or wave chaos), and thus plays an important role in general quantum mechanics or even in general wave mechanics. In this work we propose two different localization measures characterizing the degree of quantum localization, and study their relation to another fundamental aspect of quantum chaos, namely the (energy) spectral statistics. Our approach and method is quite general, and we apply it to billiard systems. One of the signatures of the localization of chaotic eigenstates …
We analytically describe the decay to equilibrium of generic observables of a non-integrable system after a perturbation in the form of a random matrix. We further obtain an analytic form for the time-averaged fluctuations of an observable in terms of the rate of decay to equilibrium. Our result shows the emergence of a Fluctuation-Dissipation theorem corresponding to a classical Brownian process, specifically, the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. Our predictions can be tested in quantum simulation experiments, thus helping to bridge the gap between theoretical and experimental research in quantum …
Spectral statistics of quantum systems have been studied in detail using the nearest neighbour level spacings, which for generic chaotic systems follows random matrix theory predictions. In this work, the probability density of the closest neighbour and farther neighbour spacings from a given level are introduced. Analytical predictions are derived using a $3 \times 3$ matrix model. The closest neighbour density is generalized to the $k-$th closest neighbour spacing density, which allows for investigating long-range correlations. For larger $k$ the probability density of $k-$th closest neighbo…
The distribution of the ratios of nearest neighbor level spacings has become a popular indicator of spectral fluctuations in complex quantum systems like interacting many-body localized and thermalization phases, quantum chaotic systems, and also in atomic and nuclear physics. In contrast to the level spacing distribution, which requires the cumbersome and at times ambiguous unfolding procedure, the ratios of spacings do not require unfolding and are easier to compute. In this work, for the class of Wigner-Dyson random matrices with nearest neighbor spacing ratios $r$ distributed as $P_β(r)$ f…
Complex quantum systems consisting of large numbers of strongly coupled states exhibit characteristic level repulsion, leading to a non-Poisson spacing distribution which can be described by Random Matrix Theory. Scattering resonances observed in ultracold atomic and molecular systems exhibit similar features as a consequence of their energy level structure. We study how the overlap between Feshbach resonances affects the distribution of resonance spacings. The spectrum of strongly overlapping resonances turns out to be non-Poisson even when the assumptions of Random Matrix Theory are not fulf…
We introduce a complex-plane generalization of the consecutive level-spacing distribution, used to distinguish regular from chaotic quantum spectra. Our approach features the distribution of complex-valued ratios between nearest- and next-to-nearest neighbor spacings. We show that this quantity can successfully detect the chaotic or regular nature of complex-valued spectra. This is done in two steps. First, we show that, if eigenvalues are uncorrelated, the distribution of complex spacing ratios is flat within the unit circle, whereas random matrices show a strong angular dependence in additio…
We study the long-time average of the reduced density matrix (RDM) of a two-level system as the central system, which is locally coupled to a generic many-body quantum chaotic system as the environment, under an overall Schrödinger evolution. The system-environment interaction has a generic form with dissipation. It is shown that, in addition to the exact relations due to unit trace and hermiticity, an approximate relation exists among elements of the averaged RDM computed in the eigenbasis of the central system's Hamiltonian in some interaction regimes. In particular, an explicit expression o…
The agenda of Dissipative Quantum Chaos is to create a toolbox which would allow us to categorize open quantum systems into "chaotic" and "regular" ones. Two approaches to this categorization have been proposed recently. One of them is based on spectral properties of generators of open quantum evolution. The other one utilizes the concept of Lyapunov exponents to analyze quantum trajectories obtained by unraveling this evolution. By using two quantum models, we relate the two approaches and try to understand whether there is an agreement between the corresponding categorizations. Our answer is…
Entropy production in quantum (field) systems requiring environment-induced decoherence is described in a Gaussian variational approximation. The new phenomenon of Semiquantum Chaos is reported. (Presented at the International Conference on Nonlinear Dynamics, Chaotic and Complex Systems, Zakopane (Poland), 7-12.11.95.)
We demonstrate that the energy or quasienergy level spacing distribution in dynamically localized chaotic eigenstates is excellently described by the Brody distribution, displaying the fractional power law level repulsion. This we show in two paradigmatic systems, namely for the fully chaotic eigenstates of the kicked rotator at K=7, and for the chaotic eigenstates in the mixed-type billiard system (Robnik 1983), after separating the regular and chaotic eigenstates by means of the Poincaré Husimi function, at very high energies with great statistical significance (587654 eigenstates, starting …
We present the stochastic Schroedinger equation for the dynamics of a quantum particle coupled to a high temperature environment and apply it the dynamics of a driven, damped, nonlinear quantum oscillator. Apart from an initial slip on the environmental memory time scale, in the mean, our result recovers the solution of the known non-Lindblad quantum Brownian motion master equation. A remarkable feature of our approach is its localization property: individual quantum trajectories remain localized wave packets for all times, even for the classically chaotic system considered here, the localizat…
We derive Fourier's law for a completely coherent quasi one--dimensional chaotic quantum system coupled locally to two heat baths at different temperatures. We solve the master equation to first order in the temperature difference. We show that the heat conductance can be expressed as a thermodynamic equilibrium coefficient taken at some intermediate temperature. We use that expression to show that for temperatures large compared to the mean level spacing of the system, the heat conductance is inversely proportional to the level density and, thus, inversely proportional to the length of the sy…
We numerically study quantum chaos properties of long-range XXZ dipolar Hamiltonian spin systems. Two geometries are considered: (i) an open chain with 19 spins, (ii) a face-centered cubic lattice with 14 spins. Energy level-spacing distribution indicates that the three-dimensional geometry is highly chaotic, while the one-dimensional system is mildly chaotic for small chains, but has increasing chaoticity for larger chains. We also look at statistical properties of energy eigenvectors, and of one- and two-body local observables. Finally, we present some preliminary results on time-evolution, …
The spectral properties of interacting strongly chaotic systems are investigated for growing interaction strength. A very sensitive transition from Poisson statistics to that of random matrix theory is found. We introduce a new random matrix ensemble modeling this dynamical symmetry breaking transition which turns out to be universal and depends on a single scaling parameter only. Coupled kicked rotors, a dynamical systems paradigm for such transitions, are compared with this ensemble and excellent agreement is found for the nearest-neighbor-spacing distribution. It turns out that this transit…
Our results concern quantum chaos of the vacuum Bianchi IX model. We apply the equilateral triangle potential well approximation to the potential of the Bianchi IX model to solve the eigenvalue problem for the physical Hamiltonian. Such approximation is well satisfied in vicinity of the cosmic singularity. Level spacing distribution of the eigenvalues is studied with and without applying the unfolding procedure. In both cases, the obtained distributions are qualitatively described by Brody's distribution with the parameter $β\approx0.3$, revealing some sort of the level repulsion. The observed…
The localization measures $A$ (based on the information entropy) of localized chaotic eigenstates in the Poincaré-Husimi representation have a distribution on a compact interval $[0,A_0]$, which is well approximated by the {\em beta distribution}, based on our extensive numerical calculations. The system under study is the Bunimovich' stadium billiard, which is a classically ergodic system, also fully chaotic (positive Lyapunov exponent), but in the regime of a slightly distorted circle billiard (small shape parameter $\varepsilon$) the diffusion in the momentum space is very slow. The paramet…
Contrary to conventional wisdom, level repulsion in semiclassical spectrum is not just a feature of classically chaotic systems, but classically integrable systems as well. While in chaotic systems level repulsion develops on a scale of the mean level spacing, regardless of location in the spectrum, in integrable systems it develops on a much longer scale - geometric mean of the mean level spacing and the running energy in the spectrum. We show that at this scale level correlations in integrable systems have a universal dependence on level separation, as well as discuss their exact form at any…
Chaotic evolutions exhibit exponential sensitivity to initial conditions. This suggests that even very small perturbations resulting from weak coupling of a quantum chaotic environment to the position of a system whose state is a non-local superposition will lead to rapid decoherence. However, it is also known that quantum counterparts of classically chaotic systems lose exponential sensitivity to initial conditions, so this expectation of enhanced decoherence is by no means obvious. We analyze decoherence due to a "toy" quantum environment that is analytically solvable, yet displays the cruci…
Despite considerable progress during the last decades in devising a semiclassical theory for classically chaotic quantum systems a quantitative semiclassical understanding of their dynamics at late times (beyond the so-called Heisenberg time $T_H$) is still missing. This challenge, corresponding to resolving spectral structures on energy scales below the mean level spacing, is intimately related to the quest for semiclassically restoring quantum unitarity, which is reflected in real-valued spectral determinants. Guided through insights for quantum graphs we devise a periodic-orbit resummation …
We study statistical properties of excited levels of the E x (b_1+b_2) Jahn-Teller model. The multitude of avoided crossings of energy levels is generally claimed to be a testimony of quantum chaos. We found that apart from two limiting cases (E x e and Holstein model) the distribution of nearest-neighbor spacings is rather stable as to the change of parameters and different from the Wigner one. This limiting distribution assumably shows scaling ~$\sqrt{S}$ at small S and resembles the semi-Poisson law P(S)= 4S \exp (-2 S) at S> 1. The latter is believed to be universal and characteristic, e.g…
We compare the field-field g(1)(τ), intensity-field g(3/2)(τ), and intensity-intensity g(2)(τ) correlation functions for models that are of relevance in astrophysics. We obtain expressions for the general case of a chaotic radiation, where the amplitude is Rician based on a model with an ensemble of harmonic oscillators in Brownian motion. We obtain the signal to noise ratios for two methods of measurement. The intensity-field correlation function signal to noise ratio scales with the first power of |g(1)(τ)|. This is in contrast with the well-established result of g(2)(τ) which goes as the sq…
For systems with a mixed phase space we demonstrate that dynamical tunneling universally leads to a fractional power law of the level-spacing distribution P(s) over a wide range of small spacings s. Going beyond Berry-Robnik statistics, we take into account that dynamical tunneling rates between the regular and the chaotic region vary over many orders of magnitude. This results in a prediction of P(s) which excellently describes the spectral data of the standard map. Moreover, we show that the power-law exponent is proportional to the effective Planck constant h.
The statistical properties of spectra of quantum systems within the framework of random matrix theory is widely used in many areas of physics. These properties are affected, if two or more sets of spectra are superposed, resulting from the discrete symmetries present in the system. Superposition of spectra of $m$ such circular orthogonal, unitary and symplectic ensembles are studied numerically using higher-order spacing ratios. For given $m$ and the Dyson index $β$, the modified index $β'$ is tabulated whose nearest neighbor spacing distribution is identical to that of $k$-th order spacing ra…
The entanglement of eigenstates in two coupled, classically chaotic kicked tops is studied in dependence of their interaction strength. The transition from the non-interacting and unentangled system towards full random matrix behavior is governed by a universal scaling parameter. Using suitable random matrix transition ensembles we express this transition parameter as a function of the subsystem sizes and the coupling strength for both unitary and orthogonal symmetry classes. The universality is confirmed for the level spacing statistics of the coupled kicked tops and a perturbative descriptio…
