Although the National Institute of Standards and Technology has measured the intrinsic quantum efficiency of Si and InGaAs APD materials to be above 98 % by building an efficient compound detector, commercially available devices have efficiencies ranging between 15 % and 75 %. This means bandwidth, dark current, cost, and other factors are more important than quantum efficiency for existing applications. This paper systematically examines the generic detection process, lays out the considerations needed for designing detectors for non-classical applications, and identifies the ultimate physical limits on quantum efficiency.
The practical homodyne detector model of continuous-variable quantum key distribution models the inherent imperfections of the practical homodyne detector, namely the limited detection efficiency and the electronic noise, into trusted loss. However, the conventional practical homodyne detector model is valid only when both the imperfections of the practical homodyne detector are calibrated. In this paper, we show a modified practical homodyne detector model that can model the imperfections separately. The phase-sensitive amplifier is further applied to compensate the imperfections of the pract…
The decoy-state method has been developed rapidly in quantum key distribution (QKD) since it is immune to photon-number splitting attacks. However, two basis detector efficiency asymmetry, which exists in realistic scenarios, has been ignored in the prior results. By using the recent 4-intensity decoy-state optimization protocol, we report the first implementation of high-rate QKD with asymmetric basis detector efficiency, demonstrating 1.9 to 33.2 times higher key rate than previous protocols in the situation of large basis detector efficiency asymmetry. The results ruled out an implicitly as…
A conventional resonant detector is often subject to a trade-off between bandwidth and peak sensitivity that can be traced back to quantum Cramer-Rao Bound. Anomalous dispersion has been shown to improve it by signal amplification and is thus more robust against decoherence, while it leads to instabilities. We propose a stable quantum amplifier applicable to linear systems operating at the fundamental detection limits, enabled by two-mode non-degenerate parametric amplification. At threshold, one mode of the amplifier forms a PT-symmetric system of original detector mode. Sensitivity improveme…
Quantum key distribution (QKD) protocols with threshold detectors are driving high-performance QKD demonstrations. The corresponding security proofs usually assume that all physical detectors have the same detection efficiency. However, the efficiencies of the detectors used in practice might show a mismatch depending on the manufacturing and setup of these detectors. A mismatch can also be induced as the different spatial-temporal modes of an incoming signal might couple differently to a detector. Here we develop a method that allows to provide security proofs without the usual assumption. Ou…
Testing random-detector-efficiency countermeasure in a commercial system reveals a breakable unrealistic assumption
C. W. Lim等人,IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Quantum Electronics,21,6601305(2015)]。我们发现,它仍然是容易受到修改的盲攻击,因为一个假设的硬件特性的证明依赖失败的实践。
Single photon emitters (SPEs) are often identified with a Hanbury Brown and Twiss intensity interferometer (HBTII) consisting of a 50:50 beamsplitter and two time-correlated single photon counters. For an SPE, the cross-correlation of photon arrival time between the two detectors, $g^{(2)}(τ)$, shows a hallmark dip to zero at $τ=0$. One common heuristic for identifying SPEs is by measuring a system to have $g^{(2)}(0)<1/2$. Here in, we use stochastic methods to simulate the case of a SPE observed with non-ideal detectors and optics. We show that identification of SPEs is thwarted when the dete…
We study charge detection and controlled dephasing of a mesoscopic system via a quantum dot detector (QDD), where the mesoscopic system and the QDD are capacitively coupled. The QDD is considered to have coherent resonant tunnelling via a single level. It is found that the dephasing rate is proportional to the square of the conductance of the QDD for the Breit-Wigner model, showing that the dephasing is completely different from the shot noise of the detector. The measurement rate, on the other hand, shows a dip near the resonance. Our findings are peculiar especially for a symmetric detector …
Single-photon detectors are a pivotal component in photonic quantum technologies. A precise and comprehensive calibration of the intrinsic detection efficiency is of utmost importance to ensure the proper evaluation of the performance in view of the specific technological application of interest, such as the protection against security breaches in quantum cryptographic solutions. Here we report on a systematic study on and comprehensive analysis of the estimation of the intrinsic detection efficiency of two commercial single-photon detectors based on single-photon avalanche diodes (SPADs) for …
State Measurements with Short Laser Pulses and Lower-Efficiency Photon Detectors
它已经由Cook(Phys. Scr.
We present a linearly arrayed, 16-element, superconducting nanowire single-photon detector with 83.4$\%$ system detection efficiency at 1550 nm and a mean per-element dead-time of 9.6-ns, enabling counting at 1 giga-count per second with $>50\%$ System Detection Efficiency. This device was designed and fabricated in an existing scalable commercial process.
Recent progress in the development of superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs) made of amorphous material has delivered excellent performances, and has had a great impact on a range of research fields. Despite showing the highest system detection efficiency (SDE) ever reported with SNSPDs, amorphous materials typically lead to lower critical currents, which impacts on their jitter performance. Combining a very low jitter and a high SDE remains a challenge. Here, we report on highly efficient superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors based on amorphous MoSi, combining sy…
We measure the detection efficiency of single-photon detectors at wavelengths near 851 nm and 1533.6 nm. We investigate the spatial uniformity of one free-space-coupled single-photon avalanche diode and present a comparison between fusion-spliced and connectorized fiber-coupled single-photon detectors. We find that our expanded relative uncertainty for a single measurement of the detection efficiency is as low as 0.70 % for fiber-coupled measurements at 1533.6 nm and as high as 1.78 % for our free-space characterization at 851.7 nm. The detection-efficiency determination includes corrections f…
One of the key properties of single-photon detectors is their recovery time, i.e. the time required for the detector to recover its nominal efficiency. In the case of superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs), which can feature extremely short recovery times in free-running mode, a precise characterisation of this recovery time and its time dynamics is essential for many quantum optics or quantum communication experiments. We introduce a fast and simple method to characterise precisely the recovery time of SNSPDs. It provides full information about the recovery of the efficienc…
We demonstrate quantum detector tomography of a commercial 2x2 array of superconducting nanowire single photon detectors. We show that detector-specific figures of merit including efficiency, dark-count and cross-talk probabilities can be directly extracted, without recourse to the underlying detector physics. These figures of merit are directly identified from just four elements of the reconstructed positive operator valued measure (POVM) of the device. We show that the values for efficiency and dark-count probability extracted by detector tomography show excellent agreement with independent …
