We study the entanglement dynamics of a system consisting of a large number of coupled harmonic oscillators in various configurations and for different types of nearest neighbour interactions. For a one-dimensional chain we provide compact analytical solutions and approximations to the dynamical evolution of the entanglement between spatially separated oscillators. Key properties such as the speed of entanglement propagation, the maximum amount of transferred entanglement and the efficiency for the entanglement transfer are computed. For harmonic oscillators coupled by springs, corresponding to a phonon model, we observe a non-monotonic transfer efficiency in the initially prepared amount of entanglement, i.e., an intermediate amount of initial entanglement is transferred with the highest efficiency. In contrast, within the framework of the rotating wave approximation (as appropriate e.g. in quantum optical settings) one finds a monotonic behaviour. We also study geometrical configurations that are analogous to quantum optical devices (such as beamsplitters and interferometers) and observe characteristic differences when initially thermal or squeezed states are entering these devices. We show that these devices may be switched on and off by changing the properties of an individual oscillator. They may therefore be used as building blocks of large fixed and pre-fabricated but programmable structures in which quantum information is manipulated through propagation. We discuss briefly possible experimental realisations of systems of interacting harmonic oscillators in which these effects may be confirmed experimentally.
We present a simple quantum circuit that allows for the universal and deterministic manipulation of the quantum state of confined harmonic oscillators. The scheme is based on the selective interactions of the referred oscillator with an auxiliary three-level system and a classical external driving source, and enables any unitary operations on Fock states, two-by-two. One circuit is equivalent to a single qubit unitary logical gate on Fock states qubits. Sequences of similar protocols allow for complete, deterministic and state-independent manipulation of the harmonic oscillator quantum state.
Optical orbital angular momentum (OAM), as an important degree of freedom of light, has been attracted extensive attention, due to its intrinsic feature of natural discrete infinite dimension. Manipulation of OAM spectra is crucial for many impressive applications from classical to quantum realms, in particular, nonlinear manipulation of OAM spectra. Here we realized the nonlinear manipulation of OAM spectra by using the simultaneous second- and third-harmonic generation in a single nonlinear crystal of quasi-periodically poled potassium titanyl phosphate, for fundamental waves with a variety …
We show that a squeezed bath, that acts on the central element of a harmonic chain, can drive the whole system to a steady state featuring a series of nested entangled pairs of oscillators that, ideally, covers the whole chain regardless of its size. We study how to realize this effect in various physical implementations, including optomechanical and superconducting devices, using currently available technologies. In these cases no squeezed fields are actually needed, and the squeezed bath is, instead, simulated by quantum reservoir engineering with bichromatic drives.
The faithful storage and coherent manipulation of quantum states with matter-systems enable the construction of large-scale quantum networks based on quantum repeater. To achieve useful communication rates, highly multimode quantum memories will be required to construct a multiplexed quantum repeater. Here, we present the first demonstration of the on-demand storage of orbital-angular-momentum states with weak coherent pulses at the single-photon-level in a rare-earth-ion doped crystal. Through the combination of this spatial degree-of-freedom with temporal and spectral degrees of freedom, we …
A scheme for controlling the entanglement of a two-qubit system by a local magnetic pulse is proposed. We show that the entanglement of the two-qubit system can be increased by sacrificing the coherence in ancillary degree of freedom, which is induced by a local manipulation.
We propose a scheme for measuring the Berry phase in the vibrational degree of freedom of a trapped ion. Starting from the ion in a vibrational coherent state we show how to reverse the sign of the coherent state amplitude by using a purely geometric phase. This can then be detected through the internal degrees of freedom of the ion. Our method can be applied to preparation of Schrödinger cat states.
We consider a two-dimensional system of harmonically trapped particles with pseudo-spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ degree of freedom. This degree of freedom is coupled to the particle's momentum via the so-called Rashba spin-orbit interaction. We present our numerical results for a single-particle and few-particle systems, assuming the repulsive interparticle interaction to be of zero range.
We determine the quasistationary distribution of Floquet-state occupation probabilities for a parametrically driven harmonic oscillator coupled to a thermal bath. Since the system exhibits detailed balance, and the canonical representatives of its quasienergies are equidistant, these probabilities are given by a geometrical Boltzmann distribution, but its quasitemperature differs from the actual temperature of the bath, being affected by the functional form of the latter's spectral density. We provide two examples of quasithermal engineering, i.e., of deliberate manipulation of the quasistatio…
We demonstrate the possibility of controlling the border between the quantum and the classical world by performing nonselective measurements on quantum systems. We consider a quantum harmonic oscillator initially prepared in a Schroedinger cat state and interacting with its environment. We show that the environment induced decoherence transforming the cat state into a statistical mixture can be strongly inhibited by means of appropriate sequences of measurements.
We propose a method to simulate the dynamics of spin-boson models with small crystals of trapped ions where the electronic degree of freedom of one ion is used to encode the spin while the collective vibrational degrees of freedom are employed to form an effective harmonic environment. The key idea of our approach is that a single damped mode can be used to provide a harmonic environment with Lorentzian spectral density. More complex spectral functions can be tailored by combining several individually damped modes. We propose to work with mixed-species crystals such that one species serves to …
Four-qubit cluster states of two photons entangled in polarization and linear momentum have been used to realize a complete set of single qubit rotations and the C-NOT gate for equatorial qubits with high values of fidelity. By the computational equivalence of the two degrees of freedom our result demonstrate the suitability of two photon cluster states for rapid and efficient one-way quantum computing.
We study the spontaneous decoherence of the coupled harmonic oscillators confined in a ring container, where the nearest-neighbor harmonic potentials are taken into consideration. Without any external symmetry breaking field or surrounding environment, the quantum superposition state prepared in the relative degrees of freedom gradually loses its quantum coherence spontaneously. This spontaneous decoherence is interpreted by the hidden couplings between the center-of-mass and relative degrees of freedoms, which actually originates from the symmetries of the ring geometry and corresponding nont…
Maximally entangled photon pairs with a spatial degree of freedom is a potential way for realizing high-capacity quantum computing and communication. However, methods to generate such entangled states with high quality, high brightness, and good controllability are needed. Here, a scheme is experimentally demonstrated that generates spatially maximally entangled photon pairs with an orbital angular momentum degree of freedom via spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a nonlinear crystal. Compared with existing methods using post-selection, the technique can directly modulate the spatial spe…
A SWAP operation between different types of qubits of single photons is essential for manipulating hyperentangled photons for a variety of applications. We have implemented an efficient SWAP gate for the momentum and polarization degrees of freedom of single photons. The SWAP gate was utilized in a single-photon two-qubit quantum logic circuit to deterministically transfer momentum entanglement between a pair of down-converted photons to polarization entanglement. The polarization entanglement thus obtained violates Bell's inequality by more than 150 standard deviations.
We demonstrate that the [Yb(trensal)] molecule is a prototypical coupled electronic qubit-nuclear qudit system. The combination of noise-resilient nuclear degrees of freedom and large reduction of nutation time induced by electron-nuclear mixing enables coherent manipulation of this qudit by radio-frequency pulses. Moreover, the multi-level structure of the qudit is exploited to encode and operate a qubit with embedded basic quantum error correction.
Physical systems must fulfill a number of conditions to qualify as useful quantum bits (qubits) for quantum information processing, including ease of manipulation, long decoherence times, and high fidelity readout operations. Since these conditions are hard to satisfy with a single system, it may be necessary to combine different degrees of freedom. Here we discuss a possible system, based on electronic and nuclear spin degrees of freedom in trapped ions. The nuclear spin yields long decoherence times, while the electronic spin, in a magnetic field gradient, provides efficient manipulation, an…
We analyse the properties of a strongly-damped quantum harmonic oscillator by means of an exact diagonalisation of the full Hamiltonian, including both the oscillator and the reservoir degrees of freedom to which it is coupled. Many of the properties of the oscillator, including its steady-state properties and entanglement with the reservoir can be understood and quantified in terms of a simple probability density, which we may associate with the ground-state frequency spectrum of the oscillator.
We show that the unitary evolution of a harmonic oscillator coupled to a two-level system can be undone by a suitable manipulation of the two-level system -- more specifically: by a quasi-instantaneous phase change. This enables us to isolate the dissipative evolution to which the oscillator may be exposed in addition. With this method we study the decoherence of a photon mode in cavity QED, and that of the quantized harmonic motion of trapped ions. We comment on the relation to spin echoes and multi-path interferometry.
We present an analysis of transfer of quantum information between the collective spin degrees of freedom of a large ensemble of two-level systems and a single central qubit. The coupling between the central qubit and the individual ensemble members may be varied and thus provides access to more than a single storage mode. Means to store and manipulate several independent qubits are derived for the case where the variation in coupling strengths does not allow addressing of orthogonal modes of the ensemble. While our procedures and analysis may apply to a number of different physical systems, fo…
Quantum dynamical semigroups are applied to the study of the time evolution of harmonic oscillators, both bosonic and fermionic. Explicit expressions for the density matrices describing the states of these systems are derived using the holomorphic representation. Bosonic and fermionic degrees of freedom are then put together to form a supersymmetric oscillator; the conditions that assure supersymmetry invariance of the corresponding dynamical equations are explicitly derived.
Due to their rich level structure, molecules are well-suited for probing time variation of fundamental constants, precisely measuring parity violation and time-reversal non-invariance effects, studying quantum mechanical aspects of chemical reactions, and implementing scalable quantum information processing architectures. Molecular ions are particularly attractive for these applications due to their long storage times and the near-perfect isolation from environment that result in long coherence times required to achieve high measurement precision and reduce systematic errors. However, the cont…
We provide a new canonical approach for studying the quantum mechanical damped harmonic oscillator based on the doubling of degrees of freedom approach. Explicit expressions for Lagrangians of the elementary modes of the problem, characterising both forward and backward time propagations are given. A Hamiltonian analysis, showing the equivalence with the Lagrangian approach, is also done. Based on this Hamiltonian analysis, the quantization of the model is discussed.
We investigate a quantum mechanical harmonic oscillator based on the extended Snyder model. This realization of the Snyder model is constructed as a quantum phase space generated by $D$ spatial coordinates and $D(D-1)/2$ tensorial degrees of freedom, together with their conjugate momenta. The \coo obey nontrivial \cor and generate a noncommutative geometry, which admits nicer properties than the usual realization of the model, in particular giving rise to an associative star product. The spectrum of the harmonic oscillator is studied through the introduction of creation and annihilation operat…
A mesoscopic evolution equation for an ensemble of mesoparticles follows after the elimination of internal degrees of freedom. If the system is composed of a hierarchy of scales, the reduction procedure could be worked repeatedly and the characterization of this iterating method is carried out. Namely, a prescription describing a discrete hierarchy of master equations for the density operator is obtained. Decoherence follows from the irreversible coupling of the systems, defined by mesoscopic variables, to internal degrees of freedom. We discuss briefly the existence of systems with the same d…
We present a kicked harmonic oscillator where the impulsive driving is provided by stroboscopic measurements on an ancillary degree of freedom and not by the canonical quantization of a time-dependent Hamiltonian. The ancila is dynamically entangled with the oscillator position, while the background Hamiltonian remains static. The dynamics of this system is determined in closed analytical form, allowing for the evaluation of a properly defined Loschmidt echo, ensemble averages, and phase-space portraits. As in the case of standard Floquet systems we observe regimes with crystalline and quasicr…
We investigate fast transport and spin manipulation of tunable spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates in a moving harmonic trap. Motivated by the concept of "shortcuts to adiabaticity", we design inversely the time-dependent trap position and spin-orbit coupling strength. By choosing appropriate boundary conditions we obtain fast transport and spin flip simultaneously. The non-adiabatic transport and relevant spin dynamics are illustrated with numerical examples, and compared with the adiabatic transport with constant spin-orbit-coupling strength and velocity. Moreover, the influence of …
Electron spins in silicon quantum dots are excellent qubits because they have long coherence times, high gate fidelities, and are compatible with advanced semiconductor manufacturing techniques. The valley degree of freedom, which results from the specific character of the Si band structure, is a unique feature of electrons in Si spin qubits. However, the small difference in energy between different valley levels often poses a challenge for quantum computing in Si. Here, we show that the spin-valley coupling in Si, which enables transitions between states with different spin and valley quantum…
We describe laser systems for photoionization, Doppler cooling and quantum state manipulation of beryllium ions. For photoionization of neutral beryllium, we have developed a continuous-wave 235 nm source obtained by two stages of frequency doubling from a diode laser at 940 nm. The system delivers up to 400 mW at 470 nm and 28 mW at 235 nm. For control of the beryllium ion, three laser wavelengths at 313 nm are produced by sum-frequency generation and second-harmonic generation from four infrared fiber lasers. Up to 7.2 W at 626 nm and 1.9 W at 313 nm are obtained using two pump beams at 1051…
We study the classical and quantum dynamics of generally covariant theories with vanishing a Hamiltonian and with a finite number of degrees of freedom. In particular, the geometric meaning of the full solution of the relational evolution of the degrees of freedom is displayed, which means the determination of the total number of evolving constants of motion required. Also a method to find evolving constants is proposed. The generalized Heinsenberg picture needs M time variables, as opposed to the Heisenberg picture of standard quantum mechanics where one time variable t is enough. As an appli…
The bi-partite Gaussian state, corresponding to an anisotropic harmonic oscillator in a noncommutative-space, is investigated with the help of the Simon's separability condition (generalized Peres-Horodecki criterion). It turns out that, in order to exhibit the entanglement between the noncommutative co-ordinates, the parameters (mass and frequency) have to satisfy an unique constraint equation. Exact solutions for the system are obtained after diagonalizing the model, keeping the intrinsic symplectic structure intact. It is shown that, the identification of the entangled degrees of freedom is…
