We study mesoscopic superpositions of two component Bose-Einstein condensates. Atomic condensates, with long coherence times, are good systems in which to study such quantum phenomenon. We show that the mesoscopic superposition states can be rapidly generated in which the atoms dispersively interact with the photon field in a cavity. We study the generation of superpositions of N00N states by overlapping few-photon-subtracted squeezed vacuum states and coherent states on a 50/50 beam splitter. Assuming parameters that are feasible with current technology results in output states with mean photon numbers of several tens. We show that the generated quantum states violate local realism even in the presence of considerable loss. The occurrence of strong quantum correlations for mesoscopic quantum states of light is particularly beneficial for coupling light and matter quantum systems.

We explore a minimal paradigm for thermalization, consisting of two weakly-coupled, low dimensional, non-integrable subsystems. As demonstrated for Bose-Hubbard trimers, chaotic ergodicity results in a diffusive response of each subsystem, insensitive to the details of the drive exerted on it by the other. This supports the hypothesis that thermalization can be described by a Fokker Plank equation. We also observe, however, that Levy-flight type anomalies may arise in mesoscopic systems, due to the wide range of time scales that characterize `sticky' dynamics.

We first present a summary of recent results concerning the phononic energy transport properties of mesoscopic, suspended dielectric wires. We then discuss some related open problems concerning the fundamental lower limits on the vibrational damping rates of submicron-sized cantilever structures and also the possibility to create and detect quantum superpositions of spatially separated states for such structures.
We observe the quantum coherent dynamics of atomic spinor wavepackets in the double well potentials of a far-off-resonance optical lattice. With appropriate initial conditions the system Rabi oscillates between the left and right localized states of the ground doublet, and at certain times the wavepacket corresponds to a coherent superposition of these mesoscopically distinguishable quantum states. We investigate the large-N behaviour of simple examples of supersymmetric interactions for fermions on a lattice. Witten's supersymmetric quantum mechanics and the BCS model appear just as two different aspects of one and the same model. For the BCS model, supersymmetry is only respected in a coherent superposition of Bogoliubov states. In this coherent superposition mesoscopic observables show better stability properties than in a Bogoliubov state.
We show that a noninvasive,``negative-result measurement'' can be realized in quantum dot systems. The measurement process is studied by applying the Schrödinger equation to the whole system (including the detector). We demonstrate that the possibility of observing a particular state out of coherent superposition leads to collapse of the corresponding nondiagonal density-matrix elements of the measured system. No additional reduction postulate is needed. Experimental consequences of the collapse time and the relativistic requirement are discussed for mesoscopic and optical systems.
We show how sub-Planck phase-space structures in the Wigner function can be used to achieve Heisenberg-limited sensitivity in weak force measurements. We show that a nano-resonator can be prepared in mesoscopic-superposition states merely by monitoring a qubit coupled to the square of the resonators position. This works for thermal initial states, and does not require a third-order nonlinearity. The required coupling can be generated using a simple open-loop control protocol, obtained with optimal control theory. We simulate the complete preparation process, including environmental noise. Our results indicate the power of open-loop control for state-engineering and measurement in quantum nano-systems.

Using a quantum cat state, endowed with sub-Planck structure, we connect these two novel concepts. It is demonstrated that these two phenomena manifest in complementary regimes, depending upon the degree of overlap between the mesoscopic states constituting the cat state under consideration. In particular, we find that when sub-Planck structure manifests, the imaginary weak value is obscured and vice-versa.

We study a two-level atom coupled to a Bose-Einstein condensate. We show that the rules governing the decoherence of mesoscopic superpositions involving different classical-like states of the condensate can be probed using this system.
