We report that, for the generation of a secure cryptographic key from correlations established through a noisy quantum channel, the quantum and classical advantage distillation procedures are not equivalent, when coherent eavesdropping attacks are duly taken into account. The quantum procedure can tolerate markedly more noise in the channel than the classical procedure.
We derive a sufficient condition for advantage distillation to be secure against collective attacks in device-independent quantum key distribution (DIQKD), focusing on the repetition-code protocol. In addition, we describe a semidefinite programming method to check whether this condition holds for any probability distribution obtained in a DIQKD protocol. Applying our method to various probability distributions, we find that advantage distillation is possible up to depolarising-noise values of $q \approx 9.1\%$ or limited detector efficiencies of $η\approx 89.1\%$ in a 2-input 2-output scenari…
It is known that advantage distillation (that is, information reconciliation using two-way communication) improves noise tolerances for quantum key distribution (QKD) setups. Two-way communication is hence also of interest in the device-independent case, where noise tolerance bounds for one-way error correction are currently too low to be experimentally feasible. Existing security proofs for the device-independent repetition-code protocol (the most prominent form of advantage distillation) rely on fidelity-related security conditions, but previous bounds on the fidelity were not tight. We impr…

We consider the asymptotic key rates achieved in the simplest quantum key distribution protocols, namely the BB84 and the six-state protocols, when non-uniform noise is present in the system. We first observe that higher qubit error rates do not necessarily imply lower key rates. Secondly, we consider protocols with advantage distillation and show that it can be advantageous to use the basis with higher quantum bit error rate for the key generation. We then discuss the relation between advantage distillation and entanglement distillation protocols. We show that applying advantage distillation …
Nonlocal correlations are a central feature of quantum theory, and understanding why quantum theory has a limited amount of nonlocality is a fundamental problem. Since nonlocality also has technological applications, e.g., for device-independent cryptography, it is useful to understand it as a resource and, in particular, whether and how different types of nonlocality can be interconverted. Here we focus on nonlocality distillation which involves using several copies of a nonlocal resource to generate one with more nonlocality. We introduce several distillation schemes which distil an extended…
Imaging with quantum states of light promises advantages over classical approaches in terms of resolution, signal-to-noise ratio and sensitivity. However, quantum detectors are particularly sensitive sources of classical noise that can reduce or cancel any quantum advantage in the final result. Without operating in the single-photon counting regime, we experimentally demonstrate distillation of a quantum image from measured data composed of a superposition of both quantum and classical light. We measure the image of an object formed under quantum illumination (correlated photons) that is mixed…
Squeezed states of light have been improving the sensitivity of gravitational-wave observatories and are nonclassical resources of quantum cryptography and envisioned photonic quantum computers. The higher the squeeze factor is, the higher is the quantum advantage. Almost all applications of squeezed light require multi-path optical interference, whose unavoidable imperfections introduce optical loss, degrade the squeeze factor, as well as the quantum advantage. Here, for the first time, we experimentally demonstrate the distillation of Gaussian squeezed states that suffered from Gaussian phot…

Superconducting microwave circuits with Josephson junctions are a major platform for quantum computing. To unleash their full capabilities, the cooperative operation of multiple microwave superconducting circuits is required. Therefore, designing an efficient protocol to distribute microwave entanglement remotely becomes a crucial open problem. Here, we propose a continuous-variable entanglement-swap approach based on optical-microwave entanglement generation, which can boost the ultimate rate by two orders of magnitude at state-of-the-art parameter region, compared with traditional approaches…
The resource theory of quantum coherence is an important topic in quantum information science. Standard coherence distillation and dilution problems have been thoroughly studied. In this paper, we introduce and study the problem of one-shot coherence distillation with catalysts. In order to distill more coherence from a state of interest, a catalytic system can be involved and a jointly free operation is applied to both systems. The joint output state should be a maximally coherent state in tensor product with the unchanged catalysts, with some allowable fidelity error. We consider several dif…
Quantum networking relies on the management and exploitation of entanglement. Practical sources of entangled qubits are imperfect, producing mixed quantum state with reduced fidelity with respect to ideal Bell pairs. Therefore, an important primitive for quantum networking is entanglement distillation, whose goal is to enhance the fidelity of entangled qubits through local operations and classical communication (LOCC). Existing distillation protocols assume the availability of ideal, noiseless, communication channels. In this paper, we study the case in which communication takes place over noi…
We study the process of assisted work distillation. This scenario arises when two parties share a bipartite quantum state $ρ_{AB}$ and their task is to locally distil the optimal amount of work when one party is restricted to thermal operations whereas the other can perform general quantum operations and they are allowed to communicate classically. We demonstrate that this question is intimately related to the distillation of classical/quantum correlations. In particular, we show that the advantage of one party performing global measurements over many copies of $ρ_{AB}$ is related to the non-a…
