Weak measurement is a new technique which allows one to describe the evolution of postselected quantum systems. It appears to be useful for resolving a variety of thorny quantum paradoxes, particularly when used to study properties of pairs of particles. Unfortunately, such nonlocal or joint observables often prove difficult to measure weakly in practice (for instance, in optics -- a common testing ground for this technique -- strong photon-photon interactions would be needed). Here we derive a general, experimentally feasible, method for extracting these values from correlations between single-particle observables.
The joint weak value is a counterfactual quantity related to quantum correlations and quantum dynamics, which can be retrieved via weak measurements, as initiated by Aharonov and colleagues. In this Rapid Communication, we provide a full analytical extension of the method described by Puentes et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 040401 (2012)], to extract the joint weak values of single-particle operators from two-dimensional spatial displacements of Laguerre-Gauss probe states, for the case of azimuthal index |l|>1. This method has a statistical advantage over previous ones since information about t…
In a recent paper [Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 100501 (2013)], a scheme was proposed where subsequent observers can extract unambiguous information about the initial state of a qubit, with finite joint probability of success. Here, we generalize the problem for arbitrary preparation probabilities (arbitrary priors). We discuss two different schemes: one where only the joint probability of success is maximized and another where, in addition, the joint probability of failure is also minimized. We also derive the mutual information for these schemes and show that there are some parameter regions for th…
The Mach-Zehnder interferometric setup quantitatively characterizing the wave-particle duality implements in fact a joint measurement of two unsharp observables. We present a necessary and sufficient condition for such a pair of unsharp observables to be jointly measurable. The condition is shown to be equivalent to a duality inequality, which for the optimal strategy of extracting the which-path information is more stringent than the Jaeger-Shimony-Vaidman-Englert inequality.
Joint measurements of multiple qubits have been shown to open new possibilities for quantum information processing. Here, we present an approach based on homodyne detection to realize such measurements in the dispersive regime of cavity/circuit QED. By changing details of the measurement, the readout can be tuned from extracting only single-qubit to only multi-qubit properties. We obtain a reduced stochastic master equation describing this measurement and its effect on the qubits. As an example, we present results showing parity measurements of two qubits. In this situation, measurement of an …
The notion of weak measurement in quantum mechanics has gained a significant and wide interest in realizing apparently counterintuitive quantum effects. In recent times, several theoretical and experimental works have been reported for demonstrating the joint weak value of two observables where the coupling strength is restricted to the second order. In this paper, we extend such a formulation by providing a complete treatment of joint weak measurement scenario for all-order-coupling for the observable satisfying $A^2=\mathbb{I}$ and $A^2=A$, which allows us to reveal several hitherto unexplor…
A statistical analysis of optimal universal cloning shows that it is possible to identify an ideal (but non-positive) copying process that faithfully maps all properties of the original Hilbert space onto two separate quantum systems. The joint probabilities for non-commuting measurements on separate clones then correspond to the real parts of the complex joint probabilities observed in weak measurements on a single system, where the measurements on the two clones replace the corresponding sequence of weak measurement and post-selection. The imaginary parts of weak measurement statics can be o…
We propose to use weak measurements away from the weak-value amplification regime to carry out precision measurements of time delays of light. Our scheme is robust to several sources of noise that are shown to only limit the relative precision of the measurement. Thus, they do not set a limit on the smallest measurable phase shift contrary to standard interferometry and weak-value based measurement techniques. Our idea is not restricted to phase-shift measurements and could be used to measure other small effects using a similar protocol.
Weak measurements offer the possibility of tuning the information acquired on a system, hence the imposed disturbance. This suggests that it could be a useful tool for multi-parameter estimation, when two parameters can not be measured simultaneously at the quantum limit. Here we discuss their use for phase estimation in the presence of phase diffusion in the context of polarimetry, a scenario which is conveniently cast in terms of a two-level quantum system in many relevant cases.
Joint photocount distributions of a weak twin beam acquired by an iCCD camera are analyzed with respect to the beam spatial correlations. A method for extracting these correlations from the experimental joint photocount distributions is suggested using a suitable statistical model that quantifies the contribution of spatial correlations to the joint photocount distributions. In detail, the profile of twin-beam intensity spatial cross-correlation function is revealed from the curve that gives the genuine mean photon-pair number (both photons from a pair are detected) as a function of the extent…
Incompatible observables underlie pillars of quantum physics such as contextuality and entanglement. The Heisenberg uncertainty principle is a fundamental limitation on the measurement of the product of incompatible observables, a `joint' measurement. However, recently a method using weak measurement has experimentally demonstrated joint measurement. This method [Lundeen, J. S., and Bamber, C. Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 070402, 2012] delivers the standard expectation value of the product of observables, even if they are incompatible. A drawback of this method is that it requires coupling each obser…
In a recent Letter (Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 040401 (2012)), G. Puentes, N. Hermosa and J. P. Torres report a scheme for extracting higher-order weak values by using orbital-angular momentum states as pointer states. They claim that such weak values are inaccessible with a Gaussian pointer state only. In this Comment, we show that the Gaussian pointer state by itself can provide access to the higher-order weak value, if suitable pointer displacement is observed.
When three pigeons are in two pigeonholes, at least two of them should be in the same pigeonhole, which is called pigeonhole principle. Recently Aharonov el al have shown that the principle can be violated in a pre-postselected quantum system. This violation sheds light on a new aspect of quantum correlations, as both of the pre and postselected states are separable states. To prove this kind of quantum correlations, a measurement apparatus must be arranged in entanglement to perform a joint measurement on the quantum system. In this paper we discuss how to design the state of entangled meters…
Quantum secure communication provides a new way for protecting the security of information. As an important component of quantum secure communication, remote state preparation (RSP) can securely transmit a quantum state from a sender to a remote receiver. The existence of quantum noise severely affects the security and reliability of quantum communication system. In this paper, we study the method for improving the efficiency of joint RSP (JRSP) subjected to noise with the help of weak measurement and its reversal measurement. Taking a GHZ based deterministic JRSP as an example, we utilize the…
This study develops a novel experimental method of deducing the profile of interaction induced between impurities in a trapped gas of ultracold Fermi/Bose atoms, which are often referred to as Fermi/Bose polarons. In this method, we consider a two-body Fermi/Bose polaron collision experiment in which impurities and atoms interact only weakly. Numerical simulations of the quantum dynamics reveal the possibility to obtain information regarding the non-local induced interaction between two polarons from a measured profile of the polaron wave packet at several snapshots. This is because the potent…
Quantum mechanics does not permit joint measurements of non-commuting observables. However, it is possible to measure the weak value of a projection operator, followed by the precise measurement of a different property. The results can be interpreted as complex joint probabilities of the two non-commuting measurement outcomes. Significantly, it is possible to predict the outcome of completely different measurements by combining the joint probabilities of the initial state with complex conditional probabilities relating the new measurement to the possible combinations of measurement outcomes us…
The calibration of a quantum channel, i.e. the determination of the transmission losses affecting it, is definitely one of the principal objectives in both the quantum communication and quantum metrology frameworks. Another task of the utmost relevance is the identification, e.g. by extracting its photon number distribution, of the noise potentially present in the channel. Here we present a protocol, based on the response of a photon-number-resolving detector at different quantum efficiencies, able to accomplish both of these tasks at once, providing with a single measurement an estimate of th…
We explore the use of weak quantum measurements for single-qubit quantum state tomography processes. Weak measurements are those where the coupling between the qubit and the measurement apparatus is weak; this results in the quantum state being disturbed less than in the case of a projective measurement. We employ a weak measurement tomography protocol developed by Das and Arvind, which they claim offers a new method of extracting information from quantum systems. We test the Das-Arvind scheme for various measurement strengths, and ensemble sizes, and reproduce their results using a sequential…
