A derivation of stochastic Schrodinger equations is given using quantum filtering theory. We study an open system in contact with its environment, the electromagnetic field. Continuous observation of the field yields information on the system: it is possible to keep track in real time of the best estimate of the system's quantum state given the observations made. This estimate satisfies a stochastic Schrodinger equation, which can be derived from the quantum stochastic differential equation for the interaction picture evolution of system and field together. Throughout the paper we focus on the basic example of resonance fluorescence.
An important and well established area of quantum optics is the theory of Markovian stochastic Schrödinger equations (or by another name quantum trajectory theory). Recently stochastic Schrödinger equations have been developed for non-Markovian systems. In this paper we extend the current known stochastic Schrödinger equations for non-Markovian systems to include the position unraveling. We also discuss and illustrate that this stochastic Schrödinger equation can have an interpretation under both the orthodox and the de Broglie-Bohm hidden variable interpretation of quantum mechanics. We concl…
We consider a class of models describing a quantum oscillator in interaction with an environment. We show that models of continuous spontaneous localization based on a stochastic Schrödinger equation can be derived as an approximation to purely deterministic Hamiltonian systems. We show an exponential decay of off-diagonal matrix elements in the energy representation.
A natural non-Markovian extension of the theory of white noise quantum trajectories is presented. In order to introduce memory effects in the formalism an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck coloured noise is considered as the output driving process. Under certain conditions a random Hamiltonian evolution is recovered. Moreover, non-Markovian stochastic Schrödinger equations which unravel non-Markovian master equations are derived.
Firstly, the Markovian stochastic Schrödinger equations are presented, together with their connections with the theory of measurements in continuous time. Moreover, the stochastic evolution equations are translated into a simulation algorithm, which is illustrated by two concrete examples - the damped harmonic oscillator and a two-level atom with homodyne photodetection. Then, we consider how to introduce memory effects in the stochastic Schrödinger equation via coloured noise. Specifically, the approach by using the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process is illustrated and a simulation for the non-Markov…

We present the non-Markovian generalization of the widely used stochastic Schrodinger equation. Our result allows to describe open quantum systems in terms of stochastic state vectors rather than density operators, without approximation. Moreover, it unifies two recent independent attempts towards a stochastic description of non-Markovian open systems, based on path integrals on the one hand and coherent states on the other. The latter approach utilizes the analytical properties of coherent states and enables a microscopic interpretation of the stochastic states. The alternative first approach…
We consider an open model possessing a Markovian quantum stochastic limit and derive the limit stochastic Schrodinger equations for the wave function conditioned on indirect observations using only the von Neumann projection postulate. We show that the diffusion (Gaussian) situation is universal as a result of the central limit theorem with the quantum jump (Poissonian) situation being an exceptional case. It is shown that, starting from the correponding limiting open systems dynamics, the theory of quantum filtering leads to the same equations, therefore establishing consistency of the quantu…
A model for the motion of a charged particle in the vacuum is presented which, although purely classical in concept, yields Schrodinger's equation as a solution. It suggests that the origins of the peculiar and nonclassical features of quantum mechanics are actually inherent in a statistical description of the radiative reactive force.
We generalize the Weisskopf-Wigner theory for the line shape and transition rates of decaying states to the case of the energy-driven stochastic Schrödinger equation that has been used as a phenomenology for state vector reduction. Within the standard approximations used in the Weisskopf-Wigner analysis, and assuming that the perturbing potential inducing the decay has vanishing matrix elements within the degenerate manifold containing the decaying state, the stochastic Schrödinger equation linearizes. Solving the linearized equations, we find no change from the standard analysis in the line s…
We give a general proof that Hughston's stochastic extension of the Schrödinger equation leads to state vector collapse to energy eigenstates, with collapse probabilities given by the quantum mechanical probabilities computed from the initial state. We also show that for a system composed of independent subsystems, Hughston's equation separates into similar independent equations for the each of the subsystems, correlated only through the common Wiener process that drives the state reduction.
The physical model (PhsMdl) of a Schrodinger nonrelativistic quantized electron (ShEl) is built by means of a transition of the quadratic differential particle equation of Hamilton-Jacoby into the quadratic differential wave equation of Schrodinger in this work, which interprets the physical reason of its quantum (wave and stochastic) behaviour by explanation of the physical reason, which forces the classical Lorentz electron (LrEl) to participate in Furthian quantized stochastic oscillation motion, which turn it into quantum ShEl. It is performed that this transition is realized by my conside…
We investigate the non-Markovian quantum dynamics of a hybrid open system consisting of one qubit and one qutrit by employing a stochastic Schrödinger equation to generate diffusive quantum trajectories. We have established an exact quantum state diffusion (QSD) equation for the dissipative qubit-qutrit system coupled to a bosonic heat bath at zero temperature. As an important application, the non-Markovian QSD equation is employed to simulate the entanglement decay and generation measured by negativity. Finally, some steady state properties of the hybrid system are also discussed.
In this paper we present a perturbative procedure that allows one to numerically solve diffusive non-Markovian Stochastic Schrödinger equations, for a wide range of memory functions. To illustrate this procedure numerical results are presented for a classically driven two level atom immersed in a environment with a simple memory function. It is observed that as the order of the perturbation is increased the numerical results for the ensembled average state $ρ_{\rm red}(t)$ approach the exact reduced state found via Imamoglu's enlarged system method [Phys. Rev. A. 50, 3650 (1994)].
We show that the Schrödinger-Newton equation, which describes the nonlinear time evolution of self-gravitating quantum matter, can be made compatible with the no-signaling requirement by elevating it to a stochastic differential equation. In the deterministic form of the equation, as studied so far, the nonlinearity would lead to diverging energy corrections for localized wave packets and would create observable correlations admitting faster-than-light communication. By regularizing the divergencies and adding specific random jumps or a specific Brownian noise process, the effect of the nonlin…
Hughston has recently proposed a stochastic extension of the Schrödinger equation, expressed as a stochastic differential equation on projective Hilbert space. We derive new projective Hilbert space identities, which we use to give a general proof that Hughston's equation leads to state vector collapse to energy eigenstates, with collapse probabilities given by the quantum mechanical probabilities computed from the initial state. We discuss the relation of Hughston's equation to earlier work on norm-preserving stochastic equations, and show that Hughston's equation can be written as a manifest…
We derive the stochastic Schrodinger equation for the limit of continuous weak measurement where the observables monitored are canonical position and momentum. To this end we extend an argument due to Smolianov and Truman from the von Neumann model of indirect measurement of position to the Arthurs and Kelly model for simultaneous measurement of position and momentum. We only require unbiasedness of the detector states and an integrability condition sufficient to ensure a central limit effect. Despite taking a weak interaction, as opposed to weak measurement limit, the resulting stochastic wav…
This paper presents a detailed Lyapunov-based theory to control and stabilize continuously-measured quantum systems, which are driven by Stochastic Schrodinger Equation (SSE). Initially, equivalent classes of states of a quantum system are defined and their properties are presented. With the help of equivalence classes of states, we are able to consider global phase invariance of quantum states in our mathematical analysis. As the second mathematical modelling tool, the conventional Ito formula is further extended to non-differentiable complex functions. Based on this extended Ito formula, a d…
The set of continuous norm-preserving stochastic Schrodinger equations associated with the Lindblad master equation is introduced. This set is used to describe the localization properties of the state vector toward eigenstates of the environment operator. Particular focus is placed on determining the stochastic equation which exhibits the highest rate of localization for wide open systems. An equation having such a property is proposed in the case of a single non-hermitian environment operator. This result is relevant to numerical simulations of quantum trajectories where localization properti…
We show that the quantum state diffusion equation of Gisin and Percival, driven by complex Wiener noise, is equivalent up to a global stochastic phase to quantum trajectory models. With an appropriate feedback scheme, we set up an analogue continuous measurement model with exactly simulates the Gisin-Percival quantum state diffusion.
Weak measurement of a subset of noncommuting observables of a quantum system can be modeled by the open-system evolution, governed by the master equation in the Lindblad form. The open-system density operator can be represented as statistical mixture over non unitarily evolving pure states, driven by the stochastic Nonlinear Schrodinger equation (sNLSE). The globally stable solution of the sNLSE is obtained in the case where the measured subset of observables comprises the spectrum-generating algebra of the system. This solution is a generalized coherent state (GCS), associated with the algebr…
Do stochastic Schrödinger equations, also known as unravelings, have a physical interpretation? In the Markovian limit, where the system {\em on average} obeys a master equation, the answer is yes. Markovian stochastic Schrödinger equations generate quantum trajectories for the system state conditioned on continuously monitoring the bath. For a given master equation, there are many different unravelings, corresponding to different sorts of measurement on the bath. In this paper we address the non-Markovian case, and in particular the sort of stochastic \sch equation introduced by Strunz, Di\' …
Non-Markovian stochastic Schrödinger equations (NMSSE) are important tools in quantum mechanics, from the theory of open systems to foundations. Yet, in general, they are but formal objects: their solution can be computed numerically only in some specific cases or perturbatively. This article is focused on the NMSSE themselves rather than on the open-system evolution they unravel and aims at making them less abstract. Namely, we propose to write the stochastic realizations of linear NMSSE as averages over the solutions of an auxiliary equation with an additional random field. Our method yields…
The interference pattern in electron double-slit diffraction is a hallmark of quantum mechanics. A long standing question for stochastic electrodynamics (SED) is whether or not it is capable of reproducing such effects, as interference is a manifestation of quantum coherence. In this study, we use excited harmonic oscillators to directly test this quantum feature in SED. We use two counter-propagating dichromatic laser pulses to promote a ground-state harmonic oscillator to a squeezed Schrödinger cat state. Upon recombination of the two well-separated wavepackets, an interference pattern emerg…
Noise is ubiquitous in real quantum systems, leading to non-Hermitian quantum dynamics, and may affect the fundamental states of matter. Here we report in experiment a quantum simulation of the two-dimensional non-Hermitian quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) model using the nuclear magnetic resonance processor. Unlike the usual experiments using auxiliary qubits, we develop a stochastic average approach based on the stochastic Schrödinger equation to realize the non-Hermitian dissipative quantum dynamics, which has advantages in saving the quantum simulation sources and simplifies implementation of …
By starting from the stochastic Schrödinger equation and quantum trajectory theory, we introduce memory effects by considering stochastic adapted coefficients. As an example of a natural non-Markovian extension of the theory of white noise quantum trajectories we use an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck coloured noise as the output driving process. Under certain conditions a random Hamiltonian evolution is recovered. Moreover, we show that our non-Markovian stochastic Schrödinger equations unravel some master equations with memory kernels.
A Bohmian analysis of the so-called Schrödinger-Langevin or Kostin nonlinear differential equation is provided to study how thermal fluctuations of the environment affects the dynamics of the wave packet from a quantum hydrodynamical point of view. In this way, after obtaining the Schrödinger-Langevin-Bohm equation from the Kostin equation its application to simple but physically insightful systems such as the Brownian-Bohmian motion, motion in a gravity field and transmission through a parabolic repeller is studied. % If a time-dependent Gaussian ansatz for the probability density is assumed,…
We present embedding procedures for the non-Markovian stochastic Schrödinger equations, arising from studies of quantum systems coupled with bath environments. By introducing auxiliary wave functions, it is demonstrated that the non-Markovian dynamics can be embedded in extended, but Markovian, stochastic models. Two embedding procedures are presented. The first method leads to nonlinear stochastic equations, the implementation of which is much more efficient than the non-Markovian stochastic Schrödinger equations. The stochastic Schrödinger equations obtained from the second procedure involve…
The stochastic dissipative Schrodinger equation is derived for an open quantum system consisting of a sub-system able to exchange energy with a thermal reservoir. The resultant evolution of the wave function also gives the evolution of the density matrix, which is an explicit, stochastic form of the Lindblad master equation. A quantum fluctuation-dissipation theorem is also derived. The time correlation function is discussed.
We propose a stochastic modification of the Schrödinger-Newton equation which takes into account the effect of extrinsic spacetime fluctuations. We use this equation to demonstrate gravitationally induced decoherence of two gaussian wave-packets, and obtain a decoherence criterion similar to those obtained in the earlier literature in the context of effects of gravity on the Schrödinger equation.
"Quantum trajectories" are solutions of stochastic differential equations of non-usual type. Such equations are called "Belavkin" or "Stochastic Schrödinger Equations" and describe random phenomena in continuous measurement theory of Open Quantum System. Many recent investigations deal with the control theory in such model. In this article, stochastic models are mathematically and physically justified as limit of concrete discrete procedures called "Quantum Repeated Measurements". In particular, this gives a rigorous justification of the Poisson and diffusion approximation in quantum measureme…
This paper considers the extension of the non-Markovian stochastic approach for quantum open systems strongly coupled to a fermionic bath, to the models in which the system operators commute with the fermion bath. This technique can also be a useful tool for studying open quantum systems coupled to a spin-chain environment, which can be further transformed into an effective fermionic bath. We derive an exact stochastic Schrödinger equation (SSE), called fermionic quantum state diffusion (QSD) equation, from the first principle by using the fermionic coherent state representation. The reduced d…
A procedure allowing to construct rigorously discrete as well as continuum deterministic evolution equations from stochastic evolution equations is developed using a Dirac's bra and ket notation. This procedure is an extension of an approach previously used by the authors coined Discrete Stochastic Evolution Equations. Definitions and examples of discretes as well as continuum one-dimensional lattices are developed in detail in order to show the basic tools that allows to construct Schrödinger-like equations. Extension to d-dimensional lattices are studied in order to provide a wider expositio…
The probability operator for a generic non-equilibrium quantum system is derived. The corresponding stochastic, dissipative Schrödinger equation is also given. The dissipative and stochastic propagators are linked by the fluctuation-dissipation theorem that is derived from the unitary condition on the time propagator. The dissipative propagator is derived from thermodynamic force and entropy fluctuation operators that are in general non-linear.
In this article, the following results are obtained: the process of a randomly wandering particle having a size and a continuous trajectory of motion is considered; (b) based on the study of this probabilistic process, a derivation of the Schrodinger equation is proposed; the Planck constant h is expressed in terms of the characteristics of the stationary stochastic process under consideration; the probability distribution density of the n-order derivative for a n-times differentiable stationary stochastic process is determined; it is shown that the obtained generalized Schrodinger equation is…
The Schrödinger-Newton [SN] equation describes the effect of self-gravity on the evolution of a quantum system, and it has been proposed that gravitationally induced decoherence drives the system to one of the stationary solutions of the SN equation. However, the equation by itself lacks a decoherence mechanism, because it does not possess any stochastic feature. In the present work we derive a stochastic modification of the Schrödinger-Newton equation, starting from the Einstein-Langevin equation in the theory of stochastic semiclassical gravity. We specialize this equation to the case of a s…
In this paper we present an exact Grassmann stochastic Schrödinger equation for the dynamics of an open fermionic quantum system coupled to a reservoir consisting of a finite or infinite number of fermions. We use this stochastic approach to derive the exact master equation for a fermionic system strongly coupled to electronic reservoirs. The generality and applicability of this Grassmann stochastic approach is justified and exemplified by several quantum open system problems concerning quantum decoherence and quantum transport for both vacuum and finite-temperature fermionic reservoirs. We sh…
We derive the stochastic Schrödinger equation for the system wave vector and use it to describe the excitation energy transfer dynamics in molecular aggregates. We suggest a quantum-measurement based method of estimating the excitation transfer time. Adequacy of the proposed approach is demonstrated by performing calculations on a model system. The theory is then applied to study the excitation transfer dynamics in a photosynthetic pigment-protein Fenna-Matthews-Olson (FMO) aggregate using both the Debye spectral density and the spectral density obtained from earlier molecular dynamics simulat…
General open quantum systems display memory features, their master equations are non-Markovian. We show that the subclass of Gaussian non-Markovian open system dynamics is tractable in a depth similar to the Markovian class. The structure of master equations exhibits a transparent generalization of the Lindblad structure. We find and parametrize the class of stochastic Schrödinger equations that unravel a given master equation, such class was before known for Markovian systems only. We show that particular non-Markovian unravellings known in the literature are special cases of our class.
In quantum physics, recent investigations deal with the so-called "quantum trajectory" theory. Heuristic rules are usually used to give rise to "stochastic Schrodinger equations" which are stochastic differential equations of non-usual type describing the physical models. These equations pose tedious problems in terms of mathematical justification: notion of solution, existence, uniqueness, justification... In this article, we concentrate on a particular case: the Poisson case. Random measure theory is used in order to give rigorous sense to such equations. We prove existence and uniqueness of…
We derive a stochastic hierarchy of matrix product states (HOMPS) for non-Markovian dynamics in open quantum system at finite temperature, which is numerically exact and efficient. HOMPS is obtained from the recently developed stochastic hierarchy of pure states (HOPS) by expressing HOPS in terms of formal creation and annihilation operators. The resulting stochastic first order differential equation is then formulated in terms of matrix product states and matrix product operators. In this way the exponential complexity of HOPS can be reduced to scale polynomial with the number of particles. T…
Recent developments in quantum physics make heavy use of so-called "quantum trajectories." Mathematically, this theory gives rise to "stochastic Schrödinger equations", that is, perturbation of Schrödinger-type equations under the form of stochastic differential equations. But such equations are in general not of the usual type as considered in the literature. They pose a serious problem in terms of justifying the existence and uniqueness of a solution, justifying the physical pertinence of the equations. In this article we concentrate on a particular case: the diffusive case, for a two-level …

In this paper, preys with stochastic evasion policies are considered. The stochasticity adds unpredictable changes to the prey's path for avoiding predator's attacks. The prey's cost function is composed of two terms balancing the unpredictability factor (by using stochasticity to make the task of forecasting its future positions by the predator difficult) and energy consumption (the least amount of energy required for performing a maneuver). The optimal probability density functions of the actions of the prey for trading-off unpredictability and energy consumption is shown to be characterized…

Quantum stochastic methods based on effective wave functions form a framework for investigating the generally non-Markovian dynamics of a quantum-mechanical system coupled to a bath. They promise to be computationally superior to the master-equation approach, which is numerically expensive for large dimensions of the Hilbert space. Here, we numerically investigate the suitability of a known stochastic Schrödinger equation that is local in time to give a description of thermal relaxation and energy transport. This stochastic Schrödinger equation can be solved with a moderate numerical cost, ind…
Quantum trajectories are Markov processes that describe the time-evolution of a quantum system undergoing continuous indirect measurement. Mathematically, they are defined as solutions of the so-called "Stochastic Schrödinger Equations", which are nonlinear stochastic differential equations driven by Poisson and Wiener processes. This paper is devoted to the study of the invariant measures of quantum trajectories. Particularly, we prove that the invariant measure is unique under an ergodicity condition on the mean time evolution, and a "purification" condition on the generator of the evolution…
We study the open system dynamics of a heavy quark in the quark-gluon plasma using a Lindblad master equation. Applying the quantum state diffusion approach by Gisin and Percival, we derive and numerically solve a nonlinear stochastic Schrödinger equation for wave functions, which is equivalent to the Lindblad master equation for the density matrix. From our numerical analysis in one spatial dimension, it is shown that the density matrix relaxes to the Boltzmann distribution in various setups (with and without external potentials), independently of the initial conditions. We also confirm that …
A prominent tool to study the dynamics of open quantum systems is the reduced density matrix. Yet, approaching open quantum systems by means of state vectors has well known computational advantages. In this respect, the physical meaning of the so-called conditional states in Markovian and non-Markovian scenarios has been a topic of recent debate in the construction of stochastic Schrödinger equations. We shed light on this discussion by acknowledging the Bohmian conditional wavefunction as the proper mathematical object to represent, in terms of state vectors, an arbitrary subset of degrees of…
A general theory of quantum stochastic processes was formulated by Accardi, Frigerio and Lewis in 1982 within the operator-algebraic framework of quantum probability theory, as a non-commutative extension of the Kolmogorovian classical stochastic processes. More recently, studies on non-Markovian quantum processes have led to the discrete-time process tensor formalism in the Schrödinger picture to describe the outcomes of sequential interventions on open quantum systems. However, there has been no treatment of the relationship of the process tensor formalism to the quantum probabilistic theory…
The dynamics of Gaussian states for open quantum systems described by Lindblad equations can be solved analytically for systems with quadratic Hamiltonians and linear Lindbladians, showing the familiar phenomena of dissipation and decoherence. It is well known that the Lindblad dynamics can be expressed as an ensemble average over stochastic pure-state dynamics, which can be interpreted as individual experimental implementations, where the form of the stochastic dynamics depends on the measurement setup. Here we consider quantum-jump and stochastic Schrödinger dynamics for initially Gaussian s…
