It has been proposed that photon-exchange effects in atom-photon interactions could lead to greatly enhanced optical nonlinearities. These might have widespread application (e.g. quantum information). Here we demonstrate experimentally that such exchange effects can indeed enhance the probability of real absorption of photon pairs. Using nonclassical pairs of photons with variable time separation, we observe a maximum suppression of pair transmission by at least 5% with respect to the result for uncorrelated photons.
When a quantum particle traverses a rectangular potential created by a quantum field both photon exchange and entanglement between particle and field take place. We present analytic results for the transition amplitudes of any possible photon exchange processes for an incoming plane wave and initial Fock, thermal and coherent field states. We show that for coherent field states the entanglement correlates the particle's position to the photon number in the field instead of the particle's energy as usual. Besides entanglement formation, remarkable differences to the classical field treatment al…
We analyse the correlation properties of light in non-linear wave-guides and transmission lines, predict the position-momentum realization of EPR paradox for photon pairs in Kerr-type non-linear photonic circuits, and we show how two-photon entangled states can be generated and detected.
We discuss the possibility of synchronising two atomic clocks exchanging entangled photon pairs through a quantum channel. A proposal for implementing practically such a scheme is discussed.
We study the nonreciprocal transmission of a single-photon in a cavity optomechanical system, in which the cavity supports a clockwise and a counter-clockwise circulating optical modes, the mechanical resonator (MR) is excited by a weak coherent driving, and the signal photon is made up of a sequence of pulses with exactly one photon per pulse. We find that, if the input state is a single-photon state, it is insufficient to study the nonreciprocity only from the perspective of the transmission spectrums, since the frequencies where the nonreciprocity happens are far away from the peak frequenc…
We examine transfer of particle entanglement and spin squeezing between atomic and photonic subsystems in optical cavities coupled by two-photon exchange. Each cavity contains a single atom, interacting with cavity photons with a two-photon cascade transition. Particle entanglement is characterized by evaluating optimal spin squeezing inequalities, for the cases of initially separable and entangled two-photon states. It is found that particle entanglement is first generated among the photons in separate cavities and then transferred to the atoms. The underlying mechanism is recognized as an in…
We previously suggested that photon exchange interactions could be used to produce nonlinear effects at the two-photon level, and similar effects have been experimentally observed by Resch et al. (quant-ph/0306198). Here we note that photon exchange interactions are not useful for quantum information processing because they require the presence of substantial photon loss. This dependence on loss is somewhat analogous to the postselection required in the linear optics approach to quantum computing suggested by Knill, Laflamme, and Milburn [Nature 409, 46 (2001)].
A strong photon-photon nonlinear interaction is a necessary condition for photon blockade. Moreover, this nonlinearity can also result a bistable behavior in the cavity field. We analyze the relation between detecting field and photon blockade in a superconducting circuit QED system, and show that photon blockade cannot occur when the detecting field is in the bistable regime. This photon blockade is the microwave-photonics analog of the Coulomb blockade. We further demonstrate that the photon transmission through such system can be controlled (from photon blockade to transparency) by the dete…
In a recent review article, Opatrny and Kurizki [submitted to Fortschr. Phys., e-print quant-ph/0003010] discussed a number of issues related to the feasibility of quantum computation based on photon-exchange interactions. This Reply summarizes my view of each of the issues and the overall prospects for quantum computing based on photon-exchange interactions.
We have demonstrated single-photon interference over 150 km using time-division interferometers for quantum cryptography, which were composed of two integrated-optic asymmetric Mach-Zehnder interferometers, and balanced gated-mode photon detectors. The observed fringe visibility was more than 80% after 150-km transmission.
We present an original self-error-rejecting photonic qubit transmission scheme for both the polarization and spatial states of photon systems transmitted over collective noise channels. In our scheme, we use simple linear-optical elements, including half-wave plates, 50:50 beam splitters, and polarization beam splitters, to convert spatial-polarization modes into different time bins. By using postselection in different time bins, the success probability of obtaining the uncorrupted states approaches 1/4 for single-photon transmission, which is not influenced by the coefficients of noisy channe…
We experimentally study two-photon coherence in plasmon-assisted transmission with a two-photon Mach-Zehnder (MZ) interferometer. Two collinear photons of identical or orthogonal polarization are simultaneously incident on one optically thick metal film, perforated with a periodic array of subwavelength holes. The de Broglie wavelength of plasmon-assisted transmitted photons is measured, which shows that two photons are re-eradiated by the plasmons and the quantum coherence of biphoton is preserved in the conversion process of transforming biphoton to plasmons and then back to biphoton.
The relationship between transmission area of an object imaged and the visibility of its image is investigated in a lensless system. We show that the changes of the visibility are quite different when the transmission area is varied by different manners. An increase of the transmission by adding the slit number leads to a decrease of the visibility. While, the change is adverse when the slit width is widened for a given distance between two slits.
We propose an alignment-free two-party polarization-entanglement transmission scheme for entangled photons by using only linear-optical elements, requiring neither ancillary photons nor calibrated reference frames. The scheme is robust against both the random channel noise and the instability of reference frames, and it is subsequently extended to multi-party Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state transmission. Furthermore, the success probabilities for two- and multi-party entanglement transmission are, in principle, improved to unity when active polarization controllers are used. The distinct cha…
Cavity Optomechanical system is speedily approaching the regime where the radiation pressure of a single photon displaces the moving mirror. In this paper, we consider a cavity optomechanical system where the cavity field is driven by an external field. In the limit of weak mirror-cavity couplings, we calculate analytically the reflection and transmission rates for cavity field and discuss the effects of mirror-cavity coupling on the reflection and transmission.
We study the feasibility of nonlocally compensating for polarization mode dispersion (PMD), when polarization entangled photons are distributed in fiber-optic channels. We quantify the effectiveness of nonlocal compensation while taking into account the possibility that entanglement is generated through the use of a pulsed optical pump signal.
Trapped atomic ions are ideal single photon emitters with long lived internal states which can be entangled with emitted photons. Coupling the ion to an optical cavity enables efficient emission of single photons into a single spatial mode and grants control over their temporal shape. These features are key for quantum information processing and quantum communication. However, the photons emitted by these systems are unsuitable for long-distance transmission due to their wavelengths. Here we report the transmission of single photons from a single $^{40}\text{Ca}^{+}$ ion coupled to an optical …
The recently proposed idea to generate entanglement between photon states via exchange interactions in an ensemble of atoms (J.D. Franson and T.B. Pitman, Phys. Rev. A 60, 917 (1999) and J.D. Franson et al., (quant-ph/9912121)) is discussed using an S-matix approach. It is shown that if the nonlinear response of the atoms is negligible and no additional atom-atom interactions are present, exchange interactions cannot produce entanglement between photons states in a process that returns the atoms to their initial state. Entanglement generation requires the presence of a nonlinear atomic respons…
We report 10-ps correlated photon pair generation in periodically-poled reverse-proton-exchange lithium niobate waveguides with integrated mode demultiplexer at a wavelength of 1.5-um and a clock of 10 GHz. Using superconducting single photon detectors, we observed a coincidence to accidental count ratio (CAR) as high as 4000. The developed photon-pair source may find broad application in quantum information systems as well as quantum entanglement experiments.
We examine the dynamics of Rydberg polaritons with dipolar interactions that propagate in multiple spatial modes. The dipolar excitation exchange between different Rydberg states mediates an effective exchange between polaritons that enables photons to hop across different spatial channels. Remarkably, the efficiency of this photon exchange process can increase with the channel distance and becomes optimal at a finite rail separation. Based on this mechanism, we design a simple photonic network that realizes a two photon quantum gate with a robust $π$-phase, protected by the symmetries of the …
We examine several proposed schemes by Franson et al. for quantum logic gates based on non-local exchange interactions between two photons in a medium. In these schemes the presence of a {\em single} photon in a given mode is supposed to induce a large phase shift on another photon propagating in the same medium. We conclude that the schemes proposed so far are not able to produce the required conditional phase shift, even though the proposals contain many stimulating and intriguing ideas.
The transmission of quantum states in the anisotropic Heisenberg XXZ chain model with three-spin exchange interaction is studied. The average fidelity is used to evaluate the state transfer. It is found out that quantum communication can be enhanced by the anisotropic coupling and multiple spin interaction. Such spin model can reduce the time required for the perfect state transmission where the fidelity is unity. The maximally entangled Bell states can be generated and separated from the whole quantum systems.
Non-classical light sources based on a single quantum emitter are considered as core technology for multiple quantum network architectures. A large variety of sources has been developed, but the generated photons remained far from being utilized in established standard fiber networks. Here, we report a week-long transmission of polarization-entangled photons from a single InAs/GaAs quantum dot over a metropolitan network fiber. The emitted photons are in the telecommunication O-band, favored for fiber optical communication. We employ a polarization stabilization system overcoming changes of bi…
Photon-photon interactions mediated by an atomic gas can effect efficient polarization exchanges between two beams, leaving the medium exactly in its initial state. In, e.g., hydrogen, the distance required for macroscopic exchange is of order one tenth the distance in which the ordinary non-linear index of refraction would induce a phase change of pi. Several examples are worked out that show the variety of behaviors that can result, depending on the initial respective polarizations stated and the angle between the beams. Of particular interest are initial conditions in which there is no exch…
We propose and study an approach to realize quantum switch for single-photon transport in a coupled superconducting transmission line resonator (TLR) array with one controllable hopping interaction. We find that the single-photon with arbitrary wavevector can transport in a controllable way in this system. We also study how to realize controllable hopping interaction between two TLRs via a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID). When the frequency of the SQUID is largely detuned from those of the two TLRs, the variables of the SQUID can be adiabatically eliminated and thus a contr…
Quantum theory stipulates that if two particles are identical in all physical aspects, the allowed states of the system are either symmetric or antisymmetric with respect to permutations of the particle labels. Experimentally, the symmetry of the states can be inferred indirectly from the fact that neglecting the correct exchange symmetry in the theoretical analysis leads to dramatic discrepancies with the observations. The only way to directly unveil the symmetry of the states for, say, two identical particles is through the interference of the original state and the physically permuted one, …
This is the first one of a series of our papers theoretically studying the coherent control of photon transmission along the coupled resonator optical waveguide (CROW) by doping artificial atoms for various hybrid structures. We will provide the several approaches correspondingly based on Green function, the mean field method and spin wave theory et al. In the present paper we adopt the two-time Green function approach to study the coherent transmission photon in a CROW with homogeneous couplings, each cavity of which is doped by a two-level artificial atom. We calculate the two-time correlati…
The recent surface plasmon entanglement experiment [E. Altewischer et al., Nature (London) 418, 304 (2002)] is theoretically analyzed. The entanglement preservation upon transmission in the non-focused case is found to provide information about the interaction of the biphoton and the metallic film. The entanglement degradation in the focused case is explained in the framework of a fully multimode model. This phenomenon is a consequence of the polarization-selective filtering behavior of the metallic nanostructured film.
The statistical properties of a radiation sources are commonly characterized by second-order-correlation or Mandel parameter. Our research found that the single photons modulation spectrum provides us another optional way which is more sensitive to the high frequency information contained in the photon sequence. In this paper, we present direct laser communication by using a multi-channel frequency coding scheme based on the single photons modulation spectrum in which the multi-frequency modulation makes the transmission capacity efficiently enhanced. The modulation frequencies could be operat…
Extending the single photon transmission distance is a basic requirement for the implementation of quantum communication on a global scale. In this work we report the single photon exchange from a medium Earth orbit satellite (MEO) at more than 7000 km of slanted distance to the ground station at the Matera Laser Ranging Observatory. The single photon transmitter was realized by exploiting the corner cube retro-reflectors mounted on the LAGEOS-2 satellite. Long duration of data collection is possible with such altitude, up to 43 minutes in a single passage. The mean number of photons per pulse…
Using a two-photon interference technique, we measure the delay for single-photon wavepackets to be transmitted through a multilayer dielectric mirror, which functions as a ``photonic bandgap'' medium. By varying the angle of incidence, we are able to confirm the behavior predicted by the group delay (stationary phase approximation), including a variation of the delay time from superluminal to subluminal as the band edge is tuned towards to the wavelength of our photons. The agreement with theory is better than 0.5 femtoseconds (less than one quarter of an optical period) except at large angle…
We consider the nonstationary circuit QED architecture in which a single-mode cavity interacts with N>1 identical qubits, and some system parameters undergo a weak external perturbation. It is shown that in the dispersive regime one can engineer the two-photon exchange interaction by adjusting the frequency of harmonic modulation to (approximately) $2|Δ_{-}|$, where $Δ_{-}$ is the average atom--field detuning. Closed analytic description is derived for the weak atom-field coupling regime, and numeric simulations indicate that the phenomenon can be observed in the present setups.
We explore the photon transfer in the nonlinear parity-time-symmetry system of two coupled cavities, which contains nonlinear gain and loss dependent on the intracavity photons. Analytical solution to the steady state gives a saturated gain, which satisfy the parity-time symmetry automatically. The eigen-frequency self-adapts the nonlinear saturated gain to reach the maximum efficiency in the steady state. We find that the saturated gain in the weak coupling regime does not match the loss in the steady state, exhibiting an appearance of a spontaneous symmetry-breaking. The photon transmission …
We develop a rigorous mathematically consistent description of PT symmetric optical systems by using second quantization. We demonstrate the possibility of significant spontaneous generation of photons in PT symmetric systems. Further we show the emergence of Hanbury-Brown Twiss (HBT) correlations in spontaneous generation. We show that the spontaneous generation determines decisively the nonclassical nature of fields in PT symmetric systems. Our work can be applied to other systems like plasmonic structure where losses are compensated by gain mechanisms.
The present work theoretically investigates the probability of generation of entangled electron-photon pair in high-energy Compton scattering of unpolarized electrons and photons due to scattering-channel-exchange mechanism. The study suggests that the scattering of unpolarized electrons and photons with nearly equal energy of the order of MeV at cross-channel can create entangled pair of up-spin electron and RCP photon or down-spin electron and LCP photon. The entanglement is quite strong exhibiting jump-concurrence for particular directions of scattering however not limited by the Kapitza-Di…
Taking nonlinear effect into account, we study theoretically the transmission properties of photons in a one-dimensional coupled cavities, the cavity located at the center of the cavity array is coupled to a two-level system. By the traditional scattering theory, we calculate the transmission rate of photons along the cavities, and discuss the effect of nonlinearity on the photon transport. The results show that the controllable two-level system can act as a quantum switch in the coherent transport of photons. The dynamics of such a system is also studied by numerical simulations, the effect o…
The dynamical behavior of a coupled cavity array is investigated when each cavity contains a three-level atom. For the uniform and staggered intercavity hopping, the whole system Hamiltonian can be analytically diagonalized in the subspace of single-atom excitation. The quantum state transfer along the cavities is analyzed in detail for distinct regimes of parameters, and some interesting phenomena including binary transmission, selective localization of the excitation population are revealed. We demonstrate that the uniform coupling is more suitable for the quantum state transfer. It is shown…
We theoretically study cooperative effects in the steady-state transmission of photons through a medium of $N$ radiators. Using methods from quantum transport, we find a cross-over in scaling from $N$ to $N^2$ in the current and even higher powers of $N$ in the higher cumulants of the photon counting statistics as a function of the tunable source occupation. The effect should be observable for atoms confined within a nano-cell with a pumped optical cavity as photon source.
The parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetric structures have exhibited potential applications in developing various robust quantum devices. In an optical trimmer with balanced loss and gain, we analytically study the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric phase transition by investigating the spontaneous symmetric breaking. We also illustrate the single-photon transmission behaviors in both of the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric and $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry broken phases. We find (i) the non-periodical dynamics of single-photon transmission in the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry broken phase instead of $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetr…
As an emerging channel resource for modern optics, big data, internet traffic and quantum technologies, twisted photons carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) have been extended their applicable boundary in different media, such as optical fiber and atmosphere. Due to the extreme condition of loss and pressure, underwater transmission of twisted photons has not been well investigated yet. Especially, single-photon tests were all limited at a level of a few meters, and it is in practice unclear what will happen for longer transmission distances. Here we experimentally demonstrate the transmiss…
We show that it is possible to use a massless field in the vacuum to communicate in such a way that the signal travels arbitrarily slower than the speed of light and such that no energy is transmitted from the sender to the receiver. Instead, the receiver has to supply a signal-dependent amount of work to switch his detector on and off. Because of that, this kind of communication without energy exchange may be called "Quantum Collect Calling". This type of communication is related to Casimir-like interactions and it is made possible by dimension ---and curvature--- dependent subtleties of Huyg…
We study the coherent control of microwave photons propagating in a superconducting waveguide consisting of coupled transmission line resonators, each of which is connected to a tunable charge qubit. While these coupled line resonators form an artificial photonic crystal with an engineered photonic band structure, the charge qubits collectively behave as spin waves in the low excitation limit, which modify the band-gap structure to slow and stop the microwave propagation. The conceptual exploration here suggests an electromagnetically controlled quantum device based on the on-chip circuit QED …
Triple quantum dots (TQDs) are promising semiconductor spin qubits because of their all-electrical control via fast, tunable exchange interactions and immunity to global magnetic fluctuations. These qubits can experience strong transverse interaction with photons in the resonant exchange (RX) regime, when exchange is simultaneously active on both qubit axes. However, most theoretical work has been based on phenomenological Fermi-Hubbard models, which may not fully capture the complexity of the qubit spin-charge states in this regime. Here we investigate exchange in Si/SiGe and GaAs TQDs using …
We propose a controllable non-reciprocal transmission model. The model consists of a Mobius ring, which is connected with two one-dimensional semi-infinite chains, and with a two-level atom located inside one of the cavities of the Mobius ring. We use the method of Green function to study the transmittance of a single photon through the model. The results show that the non-reciprocal transmission can be achieved in this model and the two-level atom can behave as a quantum switch for the non-reciprocal transport of the single photon. This controllable non-reciprocal transmission model may inspi…
Coexistence of coupling-induced transparency (CIT) and absorption (CIA) of signals in magnon-mediated photon-photon coupling was experimentally determined in a planar hybrid structure consisting of a yttrium iron garnet (YIG) film and three concentric inverted-split-ring resonators (ISRRs). The experimental observation of simultaneous CIT and CIA phenomena was ascribed to magnon-mediated photon-photon coupling between the individually decoupled ISRRs. In order to capture the generic physics of the observed interactions, we constructed an appropriate analytical model based on the balance betwee…
We show that photons propagating through a Rydberg-dressed atomic ensemble can exchange its spin state with a single atom. Such a spin-exchange collision exhibits both dissipative and coherent features, depending on the interaction strength. For strong interaction, the collision dissipatively drives the system into an entangled dark state of the photon with an atom. In the weak interaction regime, the scattering coherently flips the spin of a single photon in the multi-photon input pulse, demonstrating a generic single-photon subtracting process. An analytic analysis of this process reveals a …
We propose a feasible scheme to realize all-optical photon transmission switching in a passiveactive optomechanical system, consisting of one ordinary passive cavity, one active cavity and one common movable membrane oscillator of perfect reflection, driven by two strong control fields and two weak probe fields symmetrically. By means of the gain effect of the active cavity, many novel and valuable phenomena arise, such as frequency-independent perfect reflection (FIPR) first proposed in this paper, adjustable photon bidirectional transmission, phase-dependent non-reciprocity and so on. The re…
