We explore the border between regular and chaotic quantum dynamics, characterized by a power law decrease in the overlap between a state evolved under chaotic dynamics and the same state evolved under a slightly perturbed dynamics. This region corresponds to the edge of chaos for the classical map from which the quantum chaotic dynamics is derived and can be characterized via nonextensive entropy concepts.
We formulate the conditions under which the dynamics of a continuously measured quantum system becomes indistinguishable from that of the corresponding classical system. In particular, we demonstrate that even in a classically chaotic system the quantum state vector conditioned by the measurement remains localized and, under these conditions, follows a trajectory characterized by the classical Lyapunov exponent.
As noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) processors increase in size and complexity, their use as general purpose quantum simulators will rely on algorithms based on the Trotter-Suzuki expansion. We run quantum simulations on a small, highly accurate quantum processor, and show how one can optimize simulation accuracy by balancing algorithmic (Trotter) errors against native errors specific to the quantum hardware at hand. We further study the interplay between native errors, Trotter errors, and the emergence of chaos as seen in measurements of a time averaged fidelity-out-of-time-ordered-cor…
The dynamical status of isolated quantum systems, partly due to the linearity of the Schrodinger equation is unclear: Conventional measures fail to detect chaos in such systems. However, when quantum systems are subjected to observation -- as all experimental systems must be -- their dynamics is no longer linear and, in the appropriate limit(s), the evolution of expectation values, conditioned on the observations, closely approaches the behavior of classical trajectories. Here we show, by analyzing a specific example, that microscopic continuously observed quantum systems, even far from any cl…

Accessing the connection between classical chaos and quantum many-body systems has been a long-standing experimental challenge. Here, we investigate the onset of chaos in periodically driven two-component Bose-Einstein condensates, whose small quantum uncertainties allow for exploring the phase space with high resolution. By analyzing the uncertainties of time-evolved many-body states, we find signatures of elliptic and hyperbolic periodic orbits generated according to the Poincaré-Birkhoff theorem, and the formation of a chaotic region at increasing driving strengths. The employed fluctuation…
A fundamental requirement for the emergence of classical behavior from an underlying quantum description is that certain observed quantum systems make a transition to chaotic dynamics as their action is increased relative to $\hbar$. While experiments have demonstrated some aspects of this transition, the emergence of quantum trajectories with a positive Lyapunov exponent has never been observed directly. Here, we remove a major obstacle to achieving this goal by showing that, for the Duffing oscillator, the transition to a positive Lyapunov exponent can be resolved clearly from observed traje…
We study the evolution of a system of interacting ultracold bosons, which presents nonlinear, chaotic, behaviors in the limit of very large number of particles. Using the spectral entropy as an indicator of chaos and three different numerical approaches : Exact diagonalization, truncated Husimi method and mean-field (Gross-Pitaevskii) approximation, we put into evidence the destructive impact of quantum noise on the emergence of the nonlinear dynamics.

The information loss problem in black hole evaporation is one of fundamental issues. Its resolution requires more profound understanding of information storage mechanism in quantum systems. In this Letter, we argue that when multiple unknown parameters are stored in large entangled qudits, strong chaos generated by fast scrambling in high temperature limit yields an ordered information storage structure with decoupled quantum information capsules (QICs). A rotational isometry emerges in the quantum Fisher information metric. The isometry is expected to be observed in future experiments on cold…
We propose an anharmonic oscillator driven by two periodic forces of different frequencies as a new time-dependent model for investigating quantum dissipative chaos. Our analysis is done in the frame of statistical ensemble of quantum trajectories in quantum state diffusion approach. Quantum dynamical manifestation of chaotic behavior, including the emergence of chaos, properties of strange attractors, and quantum entanglement are studied by numerical simulation of ensemble averaged Wigner function and von Neumann entropy.
We study the standard generic quantum computer model, which describes a realistic isolated quantum computer with fluctuations in individual qubit energies and residual short-range inter-qubit couplings. It is shown that in the limit where the fluctuations and couplings are small compared to one-qubit energy spacing the spectrum has a band structure and a renormalized Hamiltonian is obtained which describes the eigenstate properties inside one band. The studies are concentrated on the central band of the computer (``core'') with the highest density of states. We show that above a critical inter…
We uncover a remarkable quantum scattering phenomenon in two-dimensional Dirac material systems where the manifestations of both classically integrable and chaotic dynamics emerge simultaneously and are electrically controllable. The distinct relativistic quantum fingerprints associated with different electron spin states are due to a physical mechanism analogous to chiroptical effect in the presence of degeneracy breaking. The phenomenon mimics a chimera state in classical complex dynamical systems but here in a relativistic quantum setting - henceforth the term "Dirac quantum chimera," assoc…
We develop optimal protocols for efficient photon transfer in a cavity-QED network. This is executed through stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) scheme, where time-varying capacitive couplings (with carefully chosen sweep rate) play a key role. We work in a regime where semiclassical limit is valid and we investigate the dynamical chaos caused by the light-matter coupling. We show that this plays a crucial role in estimating the lower bound on the sweep rate for ensuring efficient photon transfer. We present Hermitian as well as an open quantum system extension of the model. Without lo…
We establish the emergence of chaotic motion in optomechanical systems. Chaos appears at negative detuning for experimentally accessible values of the pump power and other system parameters. We describe the sequence of period doubling bifurcations that leads to chaos, and state the experimentally observable signatures in the optical spectrum. In addition to the semi-classical dynamics we analyze the possibility of chaotic motion in the quantum regime. We find that quantum mechanics protects the optomechanical system against irregular dynamics, such that simple periodic orbits reappear and repl…
We identify a border between regular and chaotic quantum dynamics. The border is characterized by a power law decrease in the overlap between a state evolved under chaotic dynamics and the same state evolved under a slightly perturbed dynamics. For example, the overlap decay for the quantum kicked top is well fitted with $[1+(q-1) (t/τ)^2]^{1/(1-q)}$ (with the nonextensive entropic index $q$ and $τ$ depending on perturbation strength) in the region preceding the emergence of quantum interference effects. This region corresponds to the edge of chaos for the classical map from which the quantum …
We model an isolated quantum computer as a two-dimensional lattice of qubits (spin halves) with fluctuations in individual qubit energies and residual short-range inter-qubit couplings. In the limit when fluctuations and couplings are small compared to the one-qubit energy spacing, the spectrum has a band structure and we study the quantum computer core (central band) with the highest density of states. Above a critical inter-qubit coupling strength, quantum chaos sets in, leading to quantum ergodicity of eigenstates in an isolated quantum computer. The onset of chaos results in the interactio…
The continuous monitoring of a quantum system strongly influences the emergence of chaotic dynamics near the transition from the quantum regime to the classical regime. Here we present a feedback control scheme that uses adaptive measurement techniques to control the degree of chaos in the driven-damped quantum Duffing oscillator. This control relies purely on the measurement backaction on the system, making it a uniquely quantum control, and is only possible due to the sensitivity of chaos to measurement. We quantify the effectiveness of our control by numerically computing the quantum Lyapun…
We analyze the origin and properties of the chaotic dynamics of two atomic ensembles in a driven-dissipative experimental setup, where they are collectively damped by a bad cavity mode and incoherently pumped by a Raman laser. Starting from the mean-field equations, we explain the emergence of chaos by way of quasiperiodicity -- presence of two or more incommensurate frequencies. This is known as the Ruelle-Takens-Newhouse route to chaos. The equations of motion have a $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$-symmetry with respect to the interchange of the two ensembles. However, some of the attractors of these equat…
One key issue of the foundation of statistical mechanics is the emergence of equilibrium ensembles in isolated and closed quantum systems. Recently, it was predicted that in the thermodynamic ($N\rightarrow\infty$) limit of large quantum many-body systems canonical density matrices emerge for small subsystems from almost all pure states. This notion of canonical typicality is assumed to originate from the entanglement between subsystem and environment and the resulting intrinsic quantum complexity of the many-body state. For individual eigenstates it has been shown that local observables show …
The emergence of chaotic phenomena in a quantum system has long been an elusive subject. Experimental progresses in this subject have become urgently needed in recent years, when considerable theoretical studies have unveiled the vital roles of chaos in a broad range of topics in quantum physics. Here, we report the first experimental observation of time singularity, that signals a classical-to-quantum chaos transition and finds its origin in the {\it sudden change} in system's memory behaviors. The time singularity observed is an analog of the "dynamical quantum phase transition" (DQPT) -- pr…
We analyze certain eigenstates of the quantum baker's map and demonstrate, using the Walsh-Hadamard transform, the emergence of the ubiquitous Thue-Morse sequence, a simple sequence that is at the border between quasi-periodicity and chaos, and hence is a good paradigm for quantum chaotic states. We show a family of states that are also simply related to Thue-Morse sequence, and are strongly scarred by short periodic orbits and their homoclinic excursions. We give approximate expressions for these states and provide evidence that these and other generic states are multifractal.
In the past decades, it was recognized that quantum chaos, which is essential for the emergence of statistical mechanics and thermodynamics, manifests itself in the effective description of the eigenstates of chaotic Hamiltonians through random matrix ensembles and the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis. Standard measures of chaos in quantum many-body systems are level statistics and the spectral form factor. In this work, we show that the norm of the adiabatic gauge potential, the generator of adiabatic deformations between eigenstates, serves as a much more sensitive measure of quantum cha…
Understanding the emergence of quantum chaos in multipartite systems is challenging in the presence of interactions. We show that the contribution of the subsystems to the global behavior can be revealed by probing the full counting statistics of the local, total, and interaction energies. As in the spectral form factor, signatures of quantum chaos in the time domain dictate a dip-ramp-plateau structure in the characteristic function, i.e., the Fourier transform of the eigenvalue distribution. With this approach, we explore the fate of chaos in interacting subsystems that are locally maximally…
Interacting quantum systems in the chaotic domain are at the core of various ongoing studies of many-body physics, ranging from the scrambling of quantum information to the onset of thermalization. We propose a minimum model for chaos that can be experimentally realized with cold atoms trapped in one-dimensional multi-well potentials. We explore the emergence of chaos as the number of particles is increased, starting with as few as two, and as the number of wells is increased, ranging from a double well to a multi-well Kronig-Penney-like system. In this way, we illuminate the narrow boundary b…
Environment-induced decoherence has long been recognised as being of crucial importance in the study of chaos in quantum systems. In particular, the exact form and strength of the system-environment interaction play a major role in the quantum-to-classical transition of chaotic systems. In this work we focus on the effect of varying monitoring strategies, i.e. for a given decoherence model and a fixed environmental coupling, there is still freedom on how to monitor a quantum system. We show here that there is a region between the deep quantum regime and the classical limit where the choice of …
A nonlinear stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) is a fascinating physical process that dynamically explores chaotic and non-chaotic phases. In a recent paper Phys. Rev. Res. 2, 042004 (R) (2020), such a phenomenon is realized in a cavity-QED platform. There, the emergence of chaos and its impact on STIRAP efficiency are mainly demonstrated in the semiclassical limit. In the present paper I treat the problem in a fully quantum many-body framework. With the aim of extracting quantum signatures of a classically chaotic system, it is shown that an out-of-time-ordered correlator (OTOC) meas…
We present an improved version of Berry's ansatz able to incorporate exactly the existence of boundaries and the correct normalization of the eigenfunction into an ensemble of random waves. We then reformulate the Random Wave conjecture showing that in its new version it is a statement about the universal nature of eigenfunction fluctuations in systems with chaotic classical dynamics. The emergence of the universal results requires the use of both semiclassical methods and a new expansion for a very old problem in quantum statistical physics
The most general and versatile defining feature of quantum chaotic systems is that they possess an energy spectrum with correlations universally described by random matrix theory (RMT). This feature can be exhibited by systems with a well defined classical limit as well as by systems with no classical correspondence, such as locally interacting spins or fermions. Despite great phenomenological success, a general mechanism explaining the emergence of RMT without reference to semiclassical concepts is still missing. Here we provide the example of a quantum many-body system with no semiclassical …
