The rotating frame is considered in quantum mechanics on the basis of the position dependent boost relating this frame to the non rotating inertial frame. We derive the Sagnac phase shift and the spin coupling with the rotation in the non relativistic limit by a simple treatment. By taking the low energy limit of the Dirac equation with a spin connection, we obtain the Hamiltonian for the rotating frame, which gives rise to all the phase shifts discussed before. Furthermore, we obtain a new phase shift due to the spin-orbit coupling.
We canonically quantize a spin-less non-relativistic point particle in a rigidly rotating cylinder symmetric reference system. The resulting quantum mechanics is investigated in the case of both a two-dimensional cylindrical shell and in the case of the full rotating cylinder; in both cases energy eigenstates exist which exhibit rotation induced negative energies. Based on a reanalysis of the classical Sagnac effect a novel way to compute the quantum Sagnac phase shift is deduced. It is pointed out that certain states on both the cylindrical shell and in the bulk give rise to a novel anomalous…
The toy model of a particle on a vertical rotating circle in the presence of uniform gravitational/ magnetic fields is explored in detail. After an analysis of the classical mechanics of the problem we then discuss the quantum mechanics from both exact and semi--classical standpoints. Exact solutions of the Schrodinger equation are obtained in some cases by diverse methods. Instantons, bounces are constructed and semi-classical, leading order tunneling amplitudes/decay rates are written down. We also investigate qualitatively the nature of small oscillations about the kink/bounce solutions. Fi…
It is shown that the point charge and magnetic moment of electron produce together such a field that total electromagnetic momentum has a component perpendicular to electron velocity. As a result classical electron models, having magnetic moment, move not along a straight line, if there is no external force, but along a spiral, the space period and radius of which are comparable with de-Broglie wave length. Some other surprising coincidences with quantum theory arise as a result of calculation. An experiment is proposed for direct observation of quantum or of new type electron delocalization.
The Horizon Quantum Mechanics is an approach that was previously introduced in order to analyse the gravitational radius of spherically symmetric systems and compute the probability that a given quantum state is a black hole. In this work, we first extend the formalism to general space-times with asymptotic (ADM) mass and angular momentum. We then apply the extended Horizon Quantum Mechanics to a harmonic model of rotating corpuscular black holes. We find that simple configurations of this model naturally suppress the appearance of the inner horizon and seem to disfavour extremal (macroscopic)…
Complete description of the classical and quantum dynamics of a particle in an anisotropic, rotating, harmonic trap is given. The problem is studied in three dimensions and no restrictions on the geometry are imposed. In the generic case, for an arbitrary orientation of the rotation axis, there are two regions of instability with different characteristics. The analysis of the quantum-mechanical problem is made simple due to a direct connection between the classical mode vectors and the quantum-mechanical wave functions. This connection is obtained via the matrix Riccati equation that governs t…
We analyze the distribution of the eigenvalues of the quantum-mechanical rotating harmonic oscillator by means of the Frobenius method. A suitable ansatz leads to a three-term recurrence relation for the expansion coefficients. Truncation of the series yields some particular eigenvalues and eigenfunctions in exact analytical form. The former can be organized in such a way that one obtains suitable information about the whole spectrum of the model.
Integrability of a square billiard is spontaneously broken as it rotates about one of its corners. The system becomes quasi-integrable where the invariant tori are broken with respect to a certain parameter, $λ= 2E/ω^{2}$ where E is the energy of the particle inside the billiard and $ω$ is the angular frequency of rotation of billiard. We study the system classically and quantum mechanically in view of obtaining a correspondence in the two descriptions. Classical phase space in Poincaré surface of section shows transition from regular to chaotic motion as the parameter $λ$ is decreased. In the…
We study the general-setting quantum geometric phase acquired by a particle in a vibrating cavity. Solving the two-level theory with the rotating-wave approximation and the SU(2) method, we obtain analytic formulae that give excellent descriptions of the geometric phase, energy, and wavefunction of the resonating system. In particular, we observe a sudden $π$-jump in the geometric phase when the system is in resonance. We found similar behaviors in the geometric phase of a spin-1/2 particle in a rotating magnetic field, for which we developed a geometrical model to help visualize its evolution…
Although quantum physics is well understood in inertial reference frames (flat spacetime), a current challenge is the search for experimental evidence of non-trivial or unexpected behaviour of quantum systems in non-inertial frames. Here, we present a novel test of quantum mechanics in a non-inertial reference frame: we consider Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) interference on a rotating platform and study the effect of uniform rotation on the distinguishability of the photons. Both theory and experiments show that the rotational motion induces a relative delay in the photon arrival times at the exit beam…
We discuss results obtained recently for a quantum-mechanical model given by a neutral particle with a magnetic quadrupole moment in a radial electric field and a scalar potential proportional to the radial variable in cylindrical coordinates that also includes the noninertial effects of a rotating reference frame. We show that the conjectured allowed values of the cyclotron frequency are a mere artifact of the truncation of the power series used to solve the radial eigenvalue equation. Our analysis proves that the analytical expression for the eigenvalues are far from correct.
We investigate the spectrum of energy and eigenstates of a hybrid cavity optomechanical system, where a cavity field mode interacts with a mechanical mode of a vibrating end mirror via radiation pressure and with a two level atom via electric dipole interaction. In the spirit of approximations developed for the quantum Rabi model beyond rotating-wave approximation (RWA), we implement the so-called generalized RWA (GRWA) to diagonalize the tripartite Hamiltonian for arbitrary large couplings. Notably, the GRWA approach still allows to rewrite the hybrid Hamiltonian in a bipartite form, like a R…
Quantum tunneling introduces a fundamental difference between classical and quantum mechanics. Whenever the classical ground state is non-unique (degenerate), quantum mechanics restore uniqueness thanks to tunneling. A condensate in a rotating trap with a vortex can have such a degenerate classical ground state, a degeneracy that is excluded in the absence of rotation at least when the Gross-Pitaevskii equation applies. If the rotating trap has a center of symmetry, like a figure eight (a peanut), the vortex may be on either side with the same energy yielding a degenerate ground state, a degen…
The Dirac equation is invariant under rotations with a constant frequency and invariable cylindrical radius. 3D transformation for rotating frames is found with help of this invariance. Exact localized solutions of the Dirac equation in the field of a traveling circularly polarized electromagnetic wave and constant magnetic field exist and possess unusual properties. Temporal changes of spin pertaining to the solutions are studied.
A simple real-space model for the electron wavefunction is suggested, based on a transverse wave with helicity, rotating at mc^2/h. The mapping of the real two-dimensional vector phasor to the complex plane permits this to satisfy the standard time-dependent Schroedinger equation. This model is extended to provide an intuitive physical picture of electron spin. Implications of this model are discussed.
The problem of Dirac's equation in a rotating electromagnetic field can be reduced to the stationary by using a transformation for point rotating reference frames. The general form of the non-Galilean transformation is deduced in the paper. For the non-Galilean transformation time is different in the rotating and resting frame. This transformation contains a constant, with the dimension of time. The constant is assumed to be fundamental. The transformation forms the necessary condition for the existence of periodic, bounded and square integrable solutions in both the rotating and resting frame…
In this second paper in a series, we show that the the general statistical approach to nonrelativistic quantum mechanics developed in the first paper yields a representation of quantum spin and magnetic moments based on classical nonrelativistic spinning top models, using Euler angle coordinates. The models allow half-odd-integer spin and predict supraluminal speeds only for electrons and other leptons, which must be treated relativistically. The spin operators in the space-fixed frame satisfy the usual commutation rules, while those in the rotating body-fixed frame satisfy "left-handed" rules…
A simple real-space model for the free-electron wavefunction with spin is proposed, based on coherent vortices on the scale of h/mc, rotating at mc^2/h. This reproduces the proper values for electron spin and magnetic moment. Transformation to a moving reference frame turns this into a wave with the de Broglie wavelength. The mapping of the real two-dimensional vector phasor to the complex plane satisfies the Schrodinger equation. This suggests a fundamental role for spin in quantum mechanics.
We consider the time delay of interfering single photons oppositely traveling in the Kerr metric of a rotating massive object. Classically, the time delay shows up as a phase difference between coherent sources of light. In quantum mechanics, the loss in visibility due to the indistinguishability of interfering photons is directly related to the time delay. We can thus observe the Kerr frame-dragging effect using the Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) dip, a purely quantum mechanical effect. By Einstein's equivalence principle, we can analogously consider a rotating turntable to simulate the Kerr metric. We…
Slow light propagation is an important phenomenon in quantum optics. Here, we theoretically study the properties of slow light in a simple optomechanical system considering an effect of non-rotating wave approximation (NRWA) that was ignored in previous related works. With the NRWA effect, the ultraslow light can be easily achieved at the window of optomechanically induced transparency, especially in unresolved sideband regime. From the theoretical results, we find the upper bound of the time delay is exactly the mechanical ringdown time which can last for \textit{several minutes} (mHz linewid…
This article is a response to the continued assumption, cited even in reports and reviews of recent experimental breakthroughs and advances in theoretical methods, that the antiJaynes-Cummings (AJC) interaction is an intractable energy non-conserving component of the quantum Rabi model (QRM). We present three key features of QRM dynamics : (a) the AJC interaction component has a conserved excitation number operator and is exactly solvable (b) QRM dynamical space consists of a rotating frame (RF) dominated by an exactly solved Jaynes-Cummings (JC) interaction specified by a conserved JC excitat…
We study one dimensional supersymmetric (SUSY) quantum mechanics of a spin 1/2 particle moving in a rotating magnetic field and scalar potential. We also discuss SUSY breaking and it is shown that SUSY breaking essentially depends on the strength and period of the magnetic field. For a purely rotating magnetic field the eigenvalue problem is solved exactly and two band energy spectrum is found.
With reference to the vacuum induced Berry phase (VIBP) obtained in the interaction of a spin-1/2 particle with quantized irradiation field under rotating-wave approximation (RWA), we present completely different treatment for the VIBP by a fully quantum mechanical treatment beyond the RWA, which gives a new definition of the VIBP and indicates the validity of RWA to be relevant not only to the energy conservation and comparison of characteristic parameters, but also to more subtle physics, such as the geometric property of the state evolution. Our result is of conceptual importance and also o…
We consider the quasi-2D two-component Bose-Einstein condensates with Rashba spin-orbit (SO) coupling in a rotating trap. An external Zeeman term favoring spin polarization along the radial direction is also considered, which has the same form as the non-canonical part of the mechanical angular momentum. The rotating condensate exhibits rich structures as varying the strengths of trapping potential and interaction. With a strong trapping potential, the condensate exhibits a half-quantum vortex-lattice configuration. Such a configuration is driven to the normal one by introducing the external r…
In this essay a generalized notion of flavor-oscillation clocks is introduced. The generalization contains the element that various superimposed mass eigenstates may have different relative orientation of the component of their spin with respect to the rotational axis of the the gravitational source. It is found that these quantum mechanical clocks do not always redshift identically when moved from the gravitational environment of a non-rotating source to the field of a rotating source. The non-geometric contributions to the redshifts may be interpreted as quantum mechanically induced fluctuat…
Strong rotating magnetic fields may cause a precession of the electron's spin around the rotation axis of the magnetic field. The superposition of two counterpropagating laser beams with circular polarization and opposite helicity features such a rotating magnetic field component but also carries spin. The laser's spin density, that can be expressed in terms of the lase's electromagnetic fields and potentials, couples to the electron's spin via a relativistic correction to the Pauli equation. We show that the quantum mechanical interaction of the electron's spin with the laser's rotating magne…

A precessing spin observed in a rotating frame of reference appears frequency-shifted, an effect analogous to the precession of a Foucault pendulum observed on the rotating Earth. This frequency shift can be understood as arising from a magnetic pseudo-field in the rotating frame that nevertheless has physically significant consequences, such as the Barnett effect. Detecting these pseudo-fields is experimentally challenging, as a rotating-frame sensor is required. Previous work has realised classical rotating-frame detectors. Here we use quantum sensors, nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centres, in a rap…
We study the quantization of many-body systems in three dimensions in rotating coordinate frames using a gauge invariant formulation of the dynamics. We consider reference frames defined by linear gauge conditions, and discuss their Gribov ambiguities and commutator algebra. We construct the momentum operators, inner-product and Hamiltonian in those gauges, for systems with and without translation invariance. The analogy with the quantization of non-Abelian Yang-Mills theories in non-covariant gauges is emphasized. Our results are applied to quasi-rigid systems in the Eckart frame.
We study the quantization of many-body systems in two dimensions in rotating coordinate frames using a gauge invariant formulation of the dynamics. We consider reference frames defined by linear and quadratic gauge conditions. In both cases we discuss their Gribov ambiguities and commutator algebra. We construct the momentum operators, inner-product and Hamiltonian in both types of gauges, for systems with and without translation invariance. The analogy with the quantization of QED in non-covariant gauges is emphasized. Our results are applied to quasi-rigid systems in the Eckart frame.
We explain the meaning of dynamical manipulation, and we illustrate its mechanism by using a system composed of a charged particle in a Penning trap. It is shown that by means of appropriate electric shocks (delta-like pulses) applied to the trap walls one can induce the squeezing transformation. The geometric phases associated to some cyclic evolutions, induced either by the standard fields of the Penning trap or by the superposition of these plus a rotating magnetic field, are analysed
The Thomas precession is calculated using three different transformations to the rotating frame. It is shown that for sufficiently large values of $v/c$, important differences in the predicted angle of precession appear, depending on the transformation used. For smaller values of $v/c$ these differences might be measured by extending the time of observation.
