We analyze both analytically and numerically the resonant four-wave mixing of two co-propagating single-photon wave packets. We present analytic expressions for the two-photon wave function and show that soliton-type quantum solutions exist which display a shape-preserving oscillatory exchange of excitations between the modes. Potential applications including quantum information processing are discussed.
The behavior of an atomic double lambda system in the presence of a strong off-resonant classical field and a few-photon resonant quantum field is examined. It is shown that the system possesses properties that allow a single-photon state to be distilled from a multi-photon input wave packet. In addition, the system is also capable of functioning as an efficient photodetector discriminating between one- and two-photon wave packets with arbitrarily high efficiency.
The phase transition to mirrorless oscillation in resonantly enhanced four-wave mixing in double-$Λ$ systems are studied analytically for the ideal case of infinite lifetimes of ground-state coherences. The stationary susceptibilities are obtained in all orders of the generated fields and analytic solutions of the coupled nonlinear differential equations for the field amplitudes are derived and discussed.
We analyse the correlation and spectral properties of two-photon states resonantly transmitted by a non-linear optical microcavity. We trace the correlation properties of transmitted two-photon states to the decay spectrum of multi-photon resonances in the non-linear microcavity.
Resonant dissipation-enabled adiabatic quantum state transfer processes between the polarization degrees of freedom of a single photon wave packet and quantum emitters are discussed. These investigations generalize previous work [N. Trautmann and G. Alber, Phys. Rev. A 93, 053807 (2015)] by taking into account the properties of the spontaneously emitted photon wave packet and of non adiabatic corrections. It is demonstrated that the photonic degrees of freedoms of these adiabatic one-photon quantum state transfer processes can be used for the passive, heralded and deterministic preparation of …
We investigate the quantum properties of fields generated by resonantly enhanced wave mixing based on atomic coherence in Raman systems. We show that such a process can be used for generation of pairs of Stokes and anti-Stokes fields with nearly perfect quantum correlations, yielding almost complete (i.e. 100%) squeezing without the use of a cavity. We discuss the extension of the wave mixing interactions into the domain of a few interacting light quanta.
Resonantly enhanced four wave mixing in double-Lambda systems is limited by ac-Stark induced nonlinear phase shifts. With counter-propagating pump fields the intensity-phase coupling has minimal impact on the dynamics, but it is of critical importance for co-propagation. The nonlinear phase terms lead to an increase of the conversion length linearly proportional to the inverse seed intensity, while without nonlinear phase-mismatch the scaling is only logarithmic. We here show that the ac-Stark contributions can be eliminated while retaining the four-wave mixing contribution by choosing a suita…
Coherent control of collective spontaneous emission in an extended atomic ensemble resonantly interacting with single-photon wave packets is analyzed. A scheme for coherent manipulation of collective atomic states is developed such that superradiant states of the atomic system can be converted into subradiant ones and vice versa. Possible applications of such a scheme for optical quantum state storage and single-photon wave packet shaping are discussed. It is shown that also in the absence of inhomogeneous broadening of the resonant line, single-photon wave packets with arbitrary pulse shape m…
We present an experimental demonstration of simultaneous above-threshold oscillations of the Stokes and anti-Stokes fields together with the single pumping beam with rubidium atoms inside an optical standing-wave cavity. The triple resonant conditions can be achieved easily by making use of the large dispersions due to two-photon transitions in the three-level atomic system. This work provides a way to achieve high efficient nonlinear frequency conversion and the generated bright Stokes and anti-Stokes cavity output beams are potential resource for applications in quantum information science.
We present a full quantum analysis of resonant forward four-wave mixing based on electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). In particular, we study the regime of efficient nonlinear conversion with low-intensity fields that has been predicted from a semiclassical analysis. We derive an effective nonlinear interaction Hamiltonian in the adiabatic limit. In contrast to conventional nonlinear optics this Hamiltonian does not have a power expansion in the fields and the conversion length increases with the input power. We analyze the stationary wave-mixing process in the forward scattering co…
We report the experimental demonstration of a controlled-NOT (CNOT) quantum logic gate between motional and internal state qubits of a single ion where, as opposed to previously demonstrated gates, the conditional dynamics depends on the extent of the ion's wave-packet. Advantages of this CNOT gate over one demonstrated previously are its immunity from Stark shifts due to off-resonant couplings and the fact that an auxiliary internal level is not required. We characterize the gate logic through measurements of the post-gate ion state populations for both logic basis and superposition input sta…
Efficient frequency conversion of photons has important applications in optical quantum technology because the frequency range suitable for photon manipulation and communication usually varies widely. Recently, an efficient frequency conversion system using a double-$Λ$ four-wave mixing (FWM) process based on electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) has attracted considerable attention because of its potential to achieve a nearly 100% conversion efficiency (CE). To obtain such a high CE, the spontaneous emission loss in this resonant-type FWM system must be suppressed considerably. A sim…
The preceding paper describes a strategy for externally influencing the course of short-time electronic excitation transfer (EET) in molecular dimers and observing the process by nonlinear wave-packet interferometry (nl-WPI). Within a sample of isotropically oriented dimers having a specified internal geometry, a vibrational mode internal to the acceptor chromophore can be preferentially driven by electronically nonresonant impulsive stimulated Raman (or resonant infrared) excitation with a short polarized control pulse. A subsequent electronically resonant polarized pump then preferentially e…
We demonstrate that a highly excited quantum electromagnetic mode strongly interacting with a single qubit exhibits several distinct resonances in addition to the Bloch-Siegert resonance condition that arises in the interaction with classical radiation. The resonance phenomena are associated with non-classical effects: Collapse of Rabi oscillations, splitting of the photon wave packet, and field-qubit entanglement. The analysis is based on a semiclassical phase-space flow of 2-by-2 matrices and becomes exact when the photon number tends to infinity. The flow equations are solved perturbatively…
We present a multichannel photoelectron interferometry technique based on trichromatic pulse shaping for unambiguous determination of quantum phases in multiphoton ionization (MPI) of potassium atoms. The colors of the laser field are chosen to produce three energetically separated photoelectron interferograms in the continuum. While the red pulse is two-photon resonant with the $3d$-state resulting in a (2+1) resonance-enhanced MPI (REMPI), a (1+2) REMPI occurs via the non-resonant intermediate $4p$-state with an initial green or blue pulse. We show that ionization via a non-resonant intermed…
We show that a conspicuous wave packet of ultracold noninteracting Bosonic atoms emerges in a 1-dimensional parabolic optical lattice as in the setup of the Aarhus experiment [P. L. Pedersen ${\it et}$ ${\it al.}$, Phys. Rev. A ${\bf 88}$, 023620 (2013)], given the lattice height is harmonically modulated with a particular amplitude at a resonant frequency. We show that this wave packet, coined "${\it 4bandPWP}$" here, executes stable time-wise periodic motion for infinitely long time. We apply the Floquet theory to analyze the parameter dependence of ${\it 4bandPWP}$ in detail. Our analysis s…
Squeezed states of light have found their way into a number of applications in quantum-enhanced metrology due to their reduced noise properties. In order to extend such an enhancement to metrology experiments based on atomic ensembles, an efficient light-atom interaction is required. Thus, there is a particular interest in generating narrow-band squeezed light that is on atomic resonance. This will make it possible not only to enhance the sensitivity of atomic based sensors, but also to deterministically entangle two distant atomic ensembles. We generate bright two-mode squeezed states of ligh…
We propose an extension of coherent control using laser-synthesized free-electron matter waves. In contrast to coherent control schemes exploiting optical coherences to steer the dynamics of matter waves, we analyze the opposite and investigate the control of quantum light emission driven by laser-sculpted coherent free-electron matter waves. We apply this concept to the control of entangled photon-pair emission in electron-atom collisions, in which the incident electron wave packet, colliding with a target atom $B$, is engineered by interferometric resonantly-enhanced multiphoton ionization o…
Attosecond four-wave mixing spectroscopy using an XUV pulse and two noncollinear near-infrared pulses is employed to measure Rydberg wavepacket dynamics resulting from extreme ultraviolet excitation of a 3s electron in atomic argon into a series of autoionizing 3s-1np Rydberg states around 29 eV. The emitted signals from individual Rydberg states exhibit oscillatory structure and persist well beyond the expected lifetimes of the emitting Rydberg states. These results reflect substantial contributions of longer-lived Rydberg states to the four wave mixing emission signals of each individually d…
The quantum-resonant evolution of the mean kinetic energy (MKE) of the kicked particle is studied in detail on different time scales for {\em general} kicking potentials. It is shown that the asymptotic time behavior of a wave-packet MKE is typically a linear growth with bounded fluctuations having a simple number-theoretical origin. For a large class of wave packets, the MKE is shown to be exactly the superposition of its asymptotic behavior and transient logarithmic corrections. Both fluctuations and transients can be significant for not too large times but they may vanish identically under …
In this paper, we use a straightforward numerical method to solve scattering models in one-dimensional lattices based on a tight-binding band structure. We do this by using the wave packet approach to scattering, which presents a more intuitive physical picture than the traditional plane wave approach. Moreover, a general matrix diagonalization method that is easily accessible to undergraduate students taking a first course in quantum mechanics is used. Beginning with a brief review of wave packet transport in the continuum limit, comparisons are made with its counterpart in a lattice. The num…
A model of the asymmetric coherent scattering process (caused by initial atomic wave-packet splitting in the momentum space) taking place at the large detuning and adiabatic course of interaction for an effective two-state system interacting with a standing wave of laser radiation is discussed. We show that the same form of initial wave-packet splitting may lead to different, in general, diffraction patterns for opposite, adiabatic and resonant, regimes of the standing-wave scattering. We show that the scattering of the Gaussian wave packet in the adiabatic case presents refraction (a limiting…
We experimentally and theoretically analyze the propagation of weak signal field pulses under the conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in hot Rb vapor, and study the effects of resonant four-wave mixing (FWM). In particular, we demonstrate that in a double-$Λ$ system, formed by the strong control field with the weak resonant signal and a far-detuned Stokes field, both continuous-wave spectra and pulse propagation dynamics for the signal field depend strongly on the amplitude of the seeded Stokes field, and the effect is enhanced in optically dense atomic medium. We also…
Quantum frequency conversion (QFC), a critical technology in photonic quantum information science, requires that the quantum characteristics of the frequency-converted photon must be the same as the input photon except for the color. In nonlinear optics, the wave mixing effect far away from the resonance condition is often used to realize QFC because it can prevent the vacuum field reservoir from destroying the quantum state of the converted photon effectively. Under conditions far away from resonance, experiments typically require strong pump light to generate large nonlinear interactions to …
A non-dispersing wave packet has been attracting much interest from various scientific and technological viewpoints. However, most quantum systems are accompanied by anharmonicity, so that retardation of quantum wave-packet dispersion is limited to very few examples only under specific conditions and targets. Here we demonstrate a conceptually new and universal method to retard or advance the dispersion of a quantum wave packet through 'programmable time shift' induced by a strong non-resonant femtosecond laser pulse. A numerical simulation has verified that a train of such retardation pulses …
The coherent manipulation of wave packets is an important tool in many areas of physics. We demonstrate the experimental realization of quasi-free wave packets of ultra-cold atoms bound by an external harmonic trap. The wave packets are produced by modulating the intensity of an optical lattice containing a Bose-Einstein condensate. The evolution of these wave packets is monitored in-situ and their reflection on a band gap is observed. In direct analogy with pump-probe spectroscopy, a probe pulse allows for the resonant de-excitation of the wave packet into localized lattice states at a long, …
An influence of nonlinear interference processes at quantum transitions under strong resonance electromagnetic fields on absorption, amplification and refractive indices as well as on four-wave mixing processes is investigated. Doppler broadening of the coupled transitions, incoherent excitation, relaxation processes, as well as power saturation processes associated with the coupled levels are taken into account. Both closed (ground state is involved) and open (only excited states are involved) energy level configurations are considered. Common expressions are obtained which allow one to analy…
A new method for the study of resonant behavior - using wave-packet dynamics - is presented, based on the powerful window operator technique. The method is illustrated and quantified by application to the astrophysically-important example of low-energy $^{12}$C + $^{12}$C collisions. For this selected, potential model test case, the technique is shown to provide both resonance energies and widths in agreement with alternative methods, such as complex-energy scattering-matrix pole searches and scattering phase-shift analyses. The method has a more general capability to study resonance phenomena…
We investigate the control of electronic energy transfer in molecular dimers through the preparation of specific vibrational coherences prior to electronic excitation, and its observation by nonlinear wave-packet interferometry. Laser-driven coherent nuclear motion can affect the instantaneous resonance between site-excited electronic states and thereby influence short-time electronic excitation transfer (EET). We first illustrate this control mechanism with calculations on a dimer whose constituent monomers undergo harmonic vibrations. We then consider the use of nonlinear wave-packet interfe…
The wave packet approach to neutrino oscillations provides an enlightening description of quantum decoherence induced, during propagation, by localization effects. Within this approach, we show that a deeper insight into the dynamical aspects of particle mixing can be obtained if one investigates the behavior of quantum correlations associated to flavor oscillations. By identifying the neutrino three-flavor modes with (suitably defined) three-qubit modes, the exploitation of tools of quantum information theory for mixed states allows a detailed analysis of the dynamical behavior of flavor enta…
We demonstrate strong laser-field-free orientation of absolute-ground-state carbonyl sulfide molecules. The molecules are oriented by the combination of a 485-ps-long non-resonant laser pulse and a weak static electric field. The edges of the laser pulse create a coherent superposition of two rotational states resulting in revivals of strong transient molecular orientation after the laser pulse. The experimentally attained degree of orientation of 0.6 corresponds to the theoretical maximum for mixing of the two states. Switching off the dc field would provide the same orientation completely fi…
Squeezed states of light have received renewed attention due to their applicability to quantum-enhanced sensing. To take full advantage of their reduced noise properties to enhance atomic-based sensors, it is necessary to generate narrowband near or on atomic resonance single-mode squeezed states of light. We have previously generated bright two-mode squeezed states of light, or twin beams, that can be tuned to resonance with the D1 line of $^{87}$Rb with a non-degenerate four-wave mixing (FWM) process in a double-lambda configuration in a $^{85}$Rb vapor cell. Here we report on the use of fee…
We show that mode-mixing quantum gates can be produced by non-uniform relativistic acceleration. Periodic motion in cavities exhibits a series of resonant conditions producing entangling quantum gates between different frequency modes. The resonant condition associated with particle creation is the main feature of the dynamical Casimir effect which has been recently demonstrated in superconducting circuits. We show that a second resonance, which has attracted less attention since it implies negligible particle production, produces a beam splitting quantum gate leading to a resonant enhancement…
An asymmetric double quantum wells (QWs) structure with resonant tunneling is suggested to achieve high efficient four wave mixing (FWM). We analytically demonstrate that the resonant tunneling can induce high efficient mixing wave in such a semiconductor structure with a low light pump wave. In particular, the FWM conversion efficiency can be enhanced dramatically in the vicinity of the center frequency. This interesting scheme may be used to generate coherent long-wavelength radiation in solid-state system.
We report on time-resolved pulsed four-wave mixing (FWM) signals in a thermal Rubidium vapor involving a Rydberg state. We observe FWM signals with dephasing times up to 7 ns, strongly dependent on the excitation bandwidth to the Rydberg state. The excitation to the Rydberg state is driven by a pulsed two-photon transition on ns time scales. Combined with a third cw de-excitation laser, a strongly directional and collective emission is generated according to a combination of the phase matching effect and averaging over Doppler classes. In contrast to a previous report [1] using off-resonant FW…
We demonstrate how the orientation of the Rb cell can significantly affect the intensity and spectral characteristics of both the frequency up- and down-converted fields generated by nonlinear processes in Rb vapour. The efficiency of parametric wave mixing in Rb vapour excited to the 5D5/2 level by two-colour resonant laser light can be significantly increased by seeding the excitation region with coherent and directional radiation at 5.23 um that is resonant with the population inverted 5D5/2-6P3/2 transition. It has been shown that the process of velocity insensitive two-photon excitation i…
We show that combination of a linearly polarized resonant microwave field and a parallel static electric field may be used to create a non-dispersive electronic wavepacket in Rydberg atoms. The static electric field allows for manipulation of the shape of the elliptical trajectory the wavepacket is propagating on. Exact quantum numerical calculations for realistic experimental parameters show that the wavepacket evolving on a linear orbit can be very easily prepared in a laboratory either by a direct optical excitation or by preparing an atom in an extremal Stark state and then slowly switchin…
