We propose an extension of coherent control using laser-synthesized free-electron matter waves. In contrast to coherent control schemes exploiting optical coherences to steer the dynamics of matter waves, we analyze the opposite and investigate the control of quantum light emission driven by laser-sculpted coherent free-electron matter waves. We apply this concept to the control of entangled photon-pair emission in electron-atom collisions, in which the incident electron wave packet, colliding with a target atom $B$, is engineered by interferometric resonantly-enhanced multiphoton ionization of a parent atom $A$. Each ionization pathway leads to electron wave packets that coherently interfere during temporal evolution in the continuum. Their mutual coherence can be controlled by adjusting the relative phases or time delays of the frequency components of the ionizing field contributing to the interfering pathways. We report coherent control of entangled photon-pair generation in radiative photo-cascade emission upon decay of the target atom after inelastic excitation triggered by the collision with the synthesized electron wave packet.
We observe the phase space trajectory of an entangled wave packet of a trapped ion with high precision. The application of a spin dependent light force on a superposition of spin states allows for coherent splitting of the matter wave packet such that two distinct components in phase space emerge. We observe such motion with a precision of better than 9% of the wave packet extension in both momentum and position, corresponding to a 0.8 nm position resolution. We accurately study the effect of the initial ion temperature on the quantum entanglement dynamics. Furthermore, we map out the phonon d…
We report an experimental study of group-velocity dispersion effect on an entangled two-photon wavepacket, generated via spontaneous parametric down-conversion and propagating through a dispersive medium. Even in the case of using CW laser beam for pump, the biphoton wavepacket and the second-order correlation function spread significantly. The study and understanding of this phenomenon is of great importance for quantum information applications, such as quantum communication and distant clock synchronization.
In the framework of the paraxial and of the slowly varying envelope approximations, with reference to a normally dispersive medium or to vacuum, the electromagnetic field is given as a continuous quantum superposition of non-dispersive and non-diffracting wave-packets (namely X-waves). Entangled states as pairs of elementary excitations traveling at (approximately) the same velocity are found in optical parametric amplification.
We consider a model Hamiltonian describing the interaction of a single-mode radiation field with the atoms of a nonlinear medium, and study the dynamics of entanglement for specific non-entangled initial states of interest: namely, those in which the field mode is initially in a Fock state, a coherent state, or a photon-added coherent state. The counterparts of near-revivals and fractional revivals are shown to be clearly identifiable in the entropy of entanglement. The ``overlap fidelity'' of the system is another such indicator, and its behaviour corroborates that of the entropy of entanglem…
It is conjectured that the effects of reduction, which occur with the individual wavepackets in a system of two separated though entangled packets, occur simultaneously in the center frame (properly defined) of the entangled packets. Existing experiments are compatible with this type of nonlocality. Further experimental tests are suggested.
A quantum teleportation scheme based on the EPR-pair entangled with respect to the ``energy+time'' variables is proposed. Teleportation of the multimode state of a single-photon wave packet is considered.
We present a scheme for demonstrating violation of Bell's inequalities using a spin-1/2 system entangled with a pair of classically distinguishable wave packets in a harmonic potential. In the optical domain, such wave packets can be represented by coherent states of a single light mode. The proposed scheme involves standard spin-1/2 projections and measurements of the position and the momentum of the harmonic oscillator system, which for a light mode can be realized by means of homodyne detection. We discuss effects of imperfections, including non-unit efficiency of the homodyne detector, and…
We propose an implementation of the quantum fast Fourier transform algorithm in an entangled system of multilevel atoms. The Fourier transform occurs naturally in the unitary time evolution of energy eigenstates and is used to define an alternate wave-packet basis for quantum information in the atom. A change of basis from energy levels to wave packets amounts to a discrete quantum Fourier transform within each atom. The algorithm then reduces to a series of conditional phase transforms between two entangled atoms in mixed energy and wave-packet bases. We show how to implement such transforms …
We study single-photon emission of a classically pumped three-level $Λ$-type emitter in a high-$Q$ cavity. In particular, generation of single-photon time-bin double-peak wave packets is shown.
A simple model allows us to study the nonclassical behavior of slowly moving atoms interacting with a quantized field. Atom and field become entangled and their joint state can be identified as a mesoscopic "Schroedinger-cat". By introducing appropriate observables for atom and field and by analyzing correlations between them based on a Bell-type inequality we can show the corresponding nonclassical behavior.
Quantum light spectroscopy, providing novel molecular information non-accessible by classical light, necessitates new computational tools when applied for complex molecular systems. We introduce two computational protocols for the molecular nuclear wave packet dynamics interacting with an entangled photon pair to produce the entangled two-photon absorption signal. The first involves summing over transition pathways in a temporal grid defined by two light-matter interaction times accompanied by the field correlation functions of quantum light. The signal is obtained by averaging over the two-ti…
Controls of waveforms (pulse durations) of single photons are important tasks for effectively interconnecting disparate atomic memories in hybrid quantum networks. So far, the waveform control of single photon that is entangled with an atomic memory remains unexplored. Here, we demonstrated control of waveform length of the photon that is entangled with an atomic spin-wave memory by varying light-atom interaction time in cold atoms. The Bell parameter S as a function of the duration of photon pulse is measured, which shows that violations of Bell equality can be achieved for the photon pulse i…
In the present paper an example of entanglement between two different kinds of interacting particles, photons and electrons is analysed. The initial-value problem of the Schroedinger equation is solved non-perturbatively for the system of a free electron interacting with a quantized mode of the electromagnetic radiation. Wave packets of the dressed states so obtained are constructed in order to describe the spatio-temporal separation of the subsystems before and after the interaction. The joint probability amplitudes are calculated for the detection of the electron at some space-time location …
A class of centrosymmetric molecules support excitons with a well-defined quasi-angular momentum. Cofacial arrangements of these molecules can be engineered so that quantum cutting produces a pair of excitons with angular momenta that are maximally entangled. The Bell state constituents can subsequently travel in opposite directions down molecular chains as ballistic wave packets. This is a direct excitonic analog to the entangled polarization states produced by the spontaneous parametric downconversion of light. As in optical settings, the ability to produce Bell states should enable foundati…
In the paper, we employ a wavefunction approach to investigate the evolution of a two-photon wave packet propagating in a one-dimensional waveguide coupled to the Jaynes-Cummings (JC) system. We derive and solve, both analytically and numerically, a set of equations of motion governing the quantum state of the system. That allows us to provide real-time analysis of the evolution of the wave packet two-photon joint spectrum (2PJS) and the excitation dynamics of the JC system in the course of its interaction with the two-photon pulse. We demonstrate that the 2PJS and the spectrum of the wave pac…
Recently a new formulation of quantum mechanics has been introduced, based on signed classical field-less particles interacting with an external field by means of only creation and annihilation events. In this paper, we extend this novel theory to the case of many-body problems. We show that, when restricted to spatial finite domains and discrete momentum space, the proposed extended theory is equivalent to the time-dependent many-body Wigner Monte Carlo method. In this new picture, the treatment of entangled systems comes naturally and, therefore, we apply it to the study of quantum entangled…
We investigate how the polarization correlations of entangled photons described by wave packets are modified when measured by moving detectors. For this purpose, we analyze the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt Bell inequality as a function of the apparatus velocity. Our analysis is motivated by future experiments with entangled photons designed to use satellites. This is a first step towards the implementation of quantum information protocols in a global scale.
The Hanbury Brown-Twiss (HBT) effect, at the quantum level, is essentially an interference of one particle with another, as opposed to interference of a particle with itself. Conventional treatments of identical particles encounter difficulties while dealing with entanglement. A recently introduced label-free approach to indistinguishable particles is described, and is used to analyze the HBT effect. Quantum wave-packets have been used to provide a better understanding of the quantum interpretation of the HBT effect. The effect is demonstrated for two independent particles governed by Bose-Ein…
Nonlinear spectroscopy and microscopy techniques are ubiquitous in a wide range of applications across physics and biology. However, these usually rely on high-powered pulsed laser systems. A promising alternative is to exploit entangled two-photon absorption (ETPA), which can lead to tens of orders of magnitude lower incident flux rates than in conventional two-photon absorption (TPA) schemes. However, the role of different entangled degrees of freedom in ETPA was unclear following recent experimental studies, when compared to earlier theoretical works. Here, we first demonstrate a linear dep…
Describing and understanding the essence of quantum entanglement and its connection to dynamical chaos is of great scientific interest. In this work, using information geometric (IG) techniques, we investigate the effects of micro-correlations on the evolution of maximal probability paths on statistical manifolds induced by systems whose microscopic degrees of freedom are Gaussian distributed. We use the statistical manifolds associated with correlated and non-correlated Gaussians to model the scattering induced quantum entanglement of two spinless, structureless, non-relativistic particles, t…
Entanglement, describing the inseparability of a quantum multiparty system, is one of the most intriguing features of quantum mechanics. Violation of Bell inequality, for ruling out the possibility of local hidden variable theories, is commonly used as a strong witness for quantum entanglement. In previous Bell test experiments with photonic entanglement based on two-photon coincidence measurement, the photon temporal wave packets are absorbed completely by the detectors. That is, the photon coherence time is much shorter than the detection time window. Here we demonstrate generation of freque…
Quantum error correction protects the quantum state against noise and decoherence in quantum communication and quantum computation, which enables one to perform fault-torrent quantum information processing. We experimentally demonstrate a quantum error correction scheme with a five-wave-packet code against a single stochastic error, the original theoretical model of which is firstly proposed by S. L. Braunstein and T. A. Walker. Five submodes of a continuous variable cluster entangled state of light are used for five encoding channels. Especially, in our encoding scheme the information of the …
The ghost interference observed for entangled photons is theoretically analyzed using wave-packet dynamics. It is shown that ghost interference is a combined effect of virtual double-slit creation due to entanglement, and quantum erasure of which-path information for the interfering photon. For the case where the two photons are of different color, it is shown that fringe width of the interfering photon depends not only on its own wavelength, but also on the wavelength of the other photon which it is entangled with.
A three-slit ghost interference experiment with entangled photons is theoretically analyzed using wave-packet dynamics. A non-local duality relation is derived which connects the path distinguishability of one photon to the interference visibility of the other.
Recent progress in generating entangled spin states of neutral atoms provides opportunities to advance quantum sensing technology. In particular, entanglement can enhance the performance of accelerometers and gravimeters based on light-pulse atom interferometry. We study the effects of error sources that may limit the sensitivity of such devices, including errors in the preparation of the initial entangled state, imperfections in the laser pulses, momentum spread of the initial atomic wave packet, measurement errors, spontaneous emission, and atom loss. We determine that, for each of these err…
In this paper we describe theoretically quantum control of temporal correlations of entangled photons produced by collinear type II spontaneous parametric down-conversion. We examine the effect of spectral phase modulation of the signal or idler photons arriving at a 50/50 beam splitter on the temporal shape of the entangled-photon wave packet . The coincidence count rate is calculated analytically for photon pairs in terms of the modulation depth applied to either the signal or idler beam with a spectral phase filter. It is found that the two-photon coincidence rate can be controlled by varyi…
We propose a simple scheme to establish entanglement among stationary qubits based on the mechanism of resonance scattering between them and a single-spin-flip wave packet in designed spin network. It is found that through the natural dynamical evolution of an incident single-spin-flip wave packet in a spin network and the subsequent measurement of the output single-spin-flip wave packet, multipartite entangled states among n stationary qubits, Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) and W states can be generated.
We consider the case of a pair of particles initially in a superposition state corresponding to a separated pair of wave packets. We calculate \emph{exactly} the time development of this non-Gaussian state due to interaction with an \emph{arbitrary} heat bath. We find that coherence decays continuously, as expected. We then investigate entanglement and find that at a finite time the system becomes separable (not entangled). Thus, we see that entanglement sudden death is also prevalent in continuous variable systems which should raise concern for the designers of entangled systems.
Entanglement is usually associated with compound systems. We first show that a one-dimensional (1D) completed scattering of a particle on a static potential barrier represents an entanglement of two alternative one-particle sub-processes, transmission and reflection, macroscopically distinct at the final stage of scattering. The wave function for the whole ensemble of scattering particles can be uniquely presented as the sum of two isometrically evolved wave packets to describe the (to-be-)transmitted and (to-be-)reflected subensembles of particles at all stages of scattering. A noninvasive La…
Quantum multi-hop teleportation is important in the field of quantum communication. In this study, we propose a quantum multi-hop communication model and a quantum routing protocol with multi-hop teleportation for wireless mesh backbone networks. Based on an analysis of quantum multi-hop protocols, a partially entangled Greenberger--Horne--Zeilinger (GHZ) state is selected as the quantum channel for the proposed protocol. Both quantum and classical wireless channels exist between two neighboring nodes along the route. With the proposed routing protocol, quantum information can be transmitted h…
We study the dynamic generation of spin entanglement between two distant sites in an XY model with $1/r^{2}$-decay long range couplings. Due to the linear dispersion relation $ε(k)\sim |k|$ of magnons in such model, we show that a well-located spin state can be dynamically split into two moving entangled local wave packets without changing their shapes. Interestingly, when such two wave packets meet at the diametrically opposite site after the fast period $τ=π$, the initial well-located state can be recurrent completely. Numerical calculation is performed to confirm the analytical result even …
The quantum photodynamics of a simple diatomic molecule with a permanent dipole immersed within an optical cavity containing a quantized radiation field is studied in detail. The chosen molecule under study, lithium fluoride (LiF), is characterized by the presence of an avoided crossing between the two lowest $^1Σ$ potential energy curves (covalent-ionic diabatic crossing). Without field, after prompt excitation from the ground state $1\; ^1Σ$, the excited nuclear wave packet moves back and forth in the upper $2\; ^1Σ$ state, but in the proximity of the avoided crossing, the non-adiabatic coup…
Correlated photons inspire abundance of metrology-related platforms, which benefit from quantum (anti-) correlations and outperform their classical-light counterparts. While such demonstrations mainly focus on entanglement, the role of photon exchange-phase and degree of distinguishability have not been widely utilized in quantum-enhanced applications. Using an interferometric setup we show that even at low degree entanglement, when a two-photon wave-function is coupled to matter, it is encoded with a reliable "which pathway?" information. An interferometric exchange-phase-cycling protocol is …

We theoretically study the dynamics of entangled states created in a beam splitter with a nonlinear Kerr medium placed into one input arm. Entanglement dynamics of initial classical and nonclassical states are studied and compared. Signatures of revival and fractional revival phenomena exhibited during the time evolution of states in the Kerr medium are captured in the entangled states produced by the beam splitter. Maximum entanglement is obtained at the instants of collapses of wave packets in the medium. Our analysis shows increase in entanglement with increase in the degree of nonclassical…
We employ a cascaded system approach to numerically simulate the interaction of photon pulses with a two-level scatterer in a chiral waveguide QED setup. It is possible to expand any pure state of two photons as a superposition of orthogonal two-photon pulses. We show that the scattering of a two-photon pulse of suitable duration may lead to an entangled output state between predominately two equally populated two-photon states. In a complementary wave packet basis, this state is a product state of two orthogonal single photon wave packets. The time reversal of the above scattering process all…

We describe the dissociation of a diatomic Feshbach molecule due to a time-varying external magnetic field in a realistic trap and guide setting. An analytic expression for the asymptotic state of the two ultracold atoms is derived, which can serve as a basis for the analysis of dissociation protocols to generate motionally entangled states. For instance, the gradual dissociation by sequences of magnetic field pulses may delocalize the atoms into macroscopically distinct wave packets, whose motional entanglement can be addressed interferometrically. The established relation between the applied…
The exact analytic solutions of the energy eigenvalue equation of the system consisting of a free electron and one mode of the quantized radiation field are used for studying the physical meaning of a class of number-phase minimum uncertainty states. The states of the mode which minimize the uncertainty product of the photon number and the Susskind and Glogower (1964) cosine operator have been obtained by Jackiw (1968). However, these states have so far been remained mere mathematical constructions without any physical significance. It is proved that the most fundamental interaction in quantum…
Over the years, quite a few proposals have been put forward by various groups to exploit the Stern-Gerlach effect to create stable macroscopic spatial superpositions between micron-sized neutral test masses over appreciably long time scales. One such proposal put forward by Bose et al. and co-workers in 2017 uses this idea to show that two masses cannot be gravitationally entangled if not for the presence of a quantum coherent mediator. A key aspect of this approach involves the measure of the visibility of the SG-interferometer, a quantity that provides an estimate of the degree of spin coher…
We present a theoretical and experimental investigation of the emission characteristics and the flux of photon pairs generated by spontaneous parametric downconversion in quasi-phase matched bulk crystals for the use in quantum communication sources. We show that, by careful design, one can attain well defined modes close to the fundamental mode of optical fibers and obtain high coupling efficiencies also for bulk crystals, these being more easily aligned than crystal waveguides. We distinguish between singles coupling, conditional coincidence, and pair coupling, and show how each of these par…
We address a fundamental issue in quantum mechanics and quantum information theory, the generation of an entangled pair of qubits that interact solely through a third, semiclassical degree of freedom, in the framework of cavity quantum electrodynamics. We show that finite, though not maximal, entanglement is obtainable in the classical limit, at the price of a diverging effective interaction time. The optimal atomic entanglement derives from a trade-off between the atomic entanglement in a sub-wave packet and the purity of the atomic state. Decoherence by photon loss sets an upper limit on the…
On the basis of the full analytical solution of the overall unitary dynamics, the time evolution of entanglement is studied in a simple bipartite model system evolving unitarily from a pure initial state. The system consists of two particles in one spacial dimension bound by harmonic forces and having its free center of mass initially localized in space in a minimum uncertainty wave packet. The existence of such initial states in which the bound particles are not entangled is pointed out. The entanglement of the two particles is shown to be independent of the wavepacket mean momentum, and to i…
High harmonic light sources make it possible to access attosecond time-scales, thus opening up the prospect of manipulating electronic wave packets for steering molecular dynamics. However, two decades after the birth of attosecond physics, the concept of attosecond chemistry has not yet been realized. This is because excitation and manipulation of molecular orbitals requires precisely controlled attosecond waveforms in the deep ultraviolet, which have not yet been synthesized. Here, we present a novel approach using attosecond vacuum ultraviolet pulse-trains to coherently excite and control t…
