Multiparametric statistical model providing stable reconstruction of parameters by observations is considered. The only general method of this kind is the root model based on the representation of the probability density as a squared absolute value of a certain function, which is referred to as a psi function in analogy with quantum mechanics. The psi function is represented by an expansion in terms of an orthonormal set of functions. It is shown that the introduction of the psi function allows one to represent the Fisher information matrix as well as statistical properties of the estimator of the state vector (state estimator) in simple analytical forms.
It is given a preliminary discussion on the ontic nature of quantum states to be intended as potentialities and on the central role of spin to be considered as the basic essence of quantum mechanical reality. The possible fundamental role of potentialities and of spin is evidenced in the framework of physical as well as of biological reality. After such preliminary deepening, using a quantum like scheme delineated on the basis of an algebraic structure, it is given for the first time mathematical demonstration of the transition from potentiality of states to their actualization as basic mechan…
Taking the view that computation is after all physical, we argue that physics, particularly quantum physics, could help extend the notion of computability. Here, we list the important and unique features of quantum mechanics and then outline a quantum mechanical "algorithm" for one of the insoluble problems of mathematics, the Hilbert's tenth and equivalently the Turing halting problem. The key element of this algorithm is the {\em computability} and {\em measurability} of both the values of physical observables and of the quantum-mechanical probability distributions for these values.
We present a description of finite dimensional quantum entanglement, based on a study of the space of all convex decompositions of a given density matrix. On this space we construct a system of real polynomial equations describing separable states. We further study this system using statistical mechanical methods. Finally, we apply our techniques to Werner states of two qubits and obtain a sufficient criterion for separability.
We show that the propositional system of a many-box model is always a set-representable effect algebra. In particular cases of 2-box and 1-box models it is an orthomodular poset and an orthomodular lattice respectively. We discuss the relation of the obtained results with the so-called Local Orthogonality principle. We argue that non-classical properties of box models are the result of a dual enrichment of the set of states caused by the impoverishment of the set of propositions. On the other hand, quantum mechanical models always have more propositions as well as more states than the classica…
Discrepancy between periodic orbit theory and numerical calculation of a modified Kepler problem is cleared by a quantum mechanical calculation. The diagonal approximation already gives a good fit for the numerical calculation. A better result yet is gained by considering the coherent interference between the classical periodic orbits and the Balian-Bloch term. This approach produces improved results for the rectangular billiards as well.
We present a mathematical framework for quantum mechanics in which the basic entities and operations have physical significance. In this framework the primitive concepts are states and effects and the resulting mathematical structure is a convex effect algebra. We characterize the convex effect algebras that are classical and those that are quantum mechanical. The quantum mechanical ones are those that can be represented on a complex Hilbert space. We next introduce the sequential product of effects to form a convex sequential effect algebra. This product makes it possible to study conditional…
We develop a statistical mechanical interpretation of algorithmic information theory by introducing the notion of thermodynamic quantities, such as free energy, energy, statistical mechanical entropy, and specific heat, into algorithmic information theory. We investigate the properties of these quantities by means of program-size complexity from the point of view of algorithmic randomness. It is then discovered that, in the interpretation, the temperature plays a role as the compression rate of the values of all these thermodynamic quantities, which include the temperature itself. Reflecting t…
We report opposite statistical mechanical behaviors of the two major paradigms in which quantum correlation measures are defined, viz., the entanglement-separability paradigm and the information-theoretic one. We show this by considering the ergodic properties of such quantum correlation measures in transverse quantum XY spin-1/2 systems in low dimensions. While entanglement measures are ergodic in such models, the quantum correlation measures defined from an information-theoretic perspective can be nonergodic.
In this work the induced van der Waals interaction between a pair of neutral atoms or molecules is considered by use of a statistical mechanical method. Commonly this interaction is obtained by standard quantum mechanical perturbation theory to second order. However, the latter is restricted to electrostatic interactions between charges and dipole moments. So with radiating dipole-dipole interaction where retardation effects are important for large separations of the particles, other methods are needed, and the resulting induced interaction is the Casimir-Polder interaction usually obtained by…
In this article, we investigate the bound state solution of the Klein Gordon equation under mixed vector and scalar coupling of an energy-dependent deformed Hulthén potential in D-dimensions. We obtain a transcendental equation after we impose the boundary conditions. We calculate energy spectra in four different limits and in arbitrary dimension via the Newton-Raphson method. Then, we use a statistical method, namely canonical partition function, and discuss the thermodynamic properties of the system in a comprehensive way. We find out that some of the thermodynamic properties overlap with ea…
We consider the problem of whether the canonical and microcanonical ensembles are locally equivalent for short-ranged quantum Hamiltonians of $N$ spins arranged on a $d$-dimensional lattices. For any temperature for which the system has a finite correlation length, we prove that the canonical and microcanonical state are approximately equal on regions containing up to $O(N^{1/(d+1)})$ spins. The proof rests on a variant of the Berry--Esseen theorem for quantum lattice systems and ideas from quantum information theory.
We discuss a quantum mechanical indirect measurement method to recover a position dependent Hamilton matrix from time evolution of coherent quantum mechanical states through an object. A mathematical formulation of this inverse problem leads to weighted X-ray transforms where the weight is a matrix. We show that such X-ray transforms are injective with very rough weights. Consequently, we can solve our quantum mechanical inverse problem in several settings, but many physically relevant problems we pose also remain open. We discuss the physical background of the proposed imaging method in detai…
A manifestation of the Pauli Exclusion Principle is observed when fermions are trapped in the ground state of a 2D harmonic oscillator trap at very low temperatures. This non-interaction of fermions results in the formation of Pauli crystals. This work introduces a statistical mechanical interpretation of the principles that led to the observation of Pauli crystals by calculating the energy, radius and other parameters of the non-interacting arrangement of ultra-cold fermions. This model approaches the problem from two different directions, namely fermion degeneracy and harmonic oscillator tre…
Three-dimensional (3D) color codes have advantages for fault-tolerant quantum computing, such as protected quantum gates with relatively low overhead and robustness against imperfect measurement of error syndromes. Here we investigate the storage threshold error rates for bit-flip and phase-flip noise in the 3D color code on the body-centererd cubic lattice, assuming perfect syndrome measurements. In particular, by exploiting a connection between error correction and statistical mechanics, we estimate the threshold for 1D string-like and 2D sheet-like logical operators to be $p^{(1)}_\mathrm{3…
We show that the Ginzburg-Landau expansion of the grand potential for the Bogoliubov-de Gennes Hamiltonian is determined by the integrable nonlinear equations of the AKNS hierarchy, and that this provides the natural mathematical framework for a hidden nonlinear quantum mechanical supersymmetry underlying the dynamics.
We give a broad generalisation of the mapping, originally due to Dennis, Kitaev, Landahl and Preskill, from quantum error correcting codes to statistical mechanical models. We show how the mapping can be extended to arbitrary stabiliser or subsystem codes subject to correlated Pauli noise models, including models of fault tolerance. This mapping connects the error correction threshold of the quantum code to a phase transition in the statistical mechanical model. Thus, any existing method for finding phase transitions, such as Monte Carlo simulations, can be applied to approximate the threshold…
Sum rules have played an important role in the development of many branches of physics since the earliest days of quantum mechanics. We present examples of one-dimensional quantum mechanical sum rules and apply them in two familiar systems, the infinite well and the single delta-function potential. These cases illustrate the different ways in which such sum rules can be realized, and the varying mathematical techniques by which they can be confirmed. Using the same methods, we also evaluate the second-order energy shifts arising from the introduction of a constant external field, namely the St…
We formulate incomplete classical statistics for situations where the knowledge about the probability distribution outside a local region is limited. The information needed to compute expectation values of local observables can be collected in a quantum mechanical state vector, whereas further statistical information about the probability distribution outside the local region becomes irrelevant. The translation of the available information between neighboring local regions is expressed by a Hamilton operator. A quantum mechanical operator can be associated to each local observable, such that e…
This paper aims at reproducing quantum mechanical (QM) spin and spin entanglement results using a realist, stochastic, and local approach, without the standard QM mathematical formulation. The concrete model proposed includes the description of Stern-Gerlach apparatuses and of Bell test experiments. Single particle trajectories are explicitly evaluated as a function of a few stochastic variables that they assumedly carry on. QM predictions re retrieved as probability distributions of similarly-prepared ensembles of particles. Notably, it is shown that the proposed model, despite being both loc…
A quantum statistical expression for the entropy of a nonequilibrium system is defined so as to be consistent with Gibbs' relation, and is shown to corresponds to dynamical variable by introducing analogous to the Heisenberg picture in quantum mechanics. The general relation between system-reservoir interactions and an entropy change operator in an open quantum system, relying just on the framework of statistical mechanics and the definition of von Neumann entropy. By using this formula, we can obtain the correct entropy production in the linear response framework. The present derivation of en…
Recent experiments have reached detection efficiencies sufficient to close the detection loophole, testing the Clauser-Horne (CH) version of Bell's inequality. For a similar future experiment to be completely loophole-free, it will be important to have discrete experimental trials with randomized measurement settings for each trial, and the statistical analysis should not overlook the possibility of a local state varying over time with possible dependence on earlier trials (the "memory loophole"). In this paper, a mathematical model for such a CH experiment is presented, and a method for stati…
We find that the overlapping of a topological quantum color code state, representing a quantum memory, with a factorized state of qubits can be written as the partition function of a 3-body classical Ising model on triangular or Union Jack lattices. This mapping allows us to test that different computational capabilities of color codes correspond to qualitatively different universality classes of their associated classical spin models. By generalizing these statistical mechanical models for arbitrary inhomogeneous and complex couplings, it is possible to study a measurement-based quantum compu…
In a quantum universe with a strong arrow of time, it is standard to postulate that the initial wave function started in a particular macrostate--the special low-entropy macrostate selected by the Past Hypothesis. Moreover, there is an additional postulate about statistical mechanical probabilities according to which the initial wave function is a "typical" choice in the macrostate (the Statistical Postulate). Together, they support a probabilistic version of the Second Law of Thermodynamics: typical initial wave functions will increase in entropy. Hence, there are two sources of randomness in…
A definition of quantum mechanical work is introduced in this dissertation, preserving the mathematical structure of the Classical Mechanics concept of work without, however, in any way invoking the notion of trajectory. By use of Gaussian states and the Caldirola-Kanai model, a case study is conducted through which the proposed quantum work is compared with another Quantum Thermodynamics well-known definition, both in quantum and semiclassical regimes, showing promising results. Finally the new definition is investigated in comparison with a classical-statistical approach for superposition an…
In mathematical aspect, we introduce quantum algorithm and the mathematical structure of quantum computer. Quantum algorithm is expressed by linear algebra on a finite dimensional complex inner product space. The mathematical formulations of quantum mechanics had been established in around 1930, by von Neumann. The formulation uses functional analysis, linear algebra and probability theory. The knowledge of the mathematical formulation of QM is enough quantum mechanical knowledge for approaching to quantum algorithm and it might be efficient way for mathematicians that starting with mathematic…
Based on quantum statistical mechanics and microscopic quantum dynamics, we prove Planck's and Kelvin's principles for macroscopic systems in a general and realistic setting. We consider a hybrid quantum system that consists of the thermodynamic system, which is initially in thermal equilibrium, and the "apparatus" which operates on the former, and assume that the whole system evolves autonomously. This provides a satisfactory derivation of the second law for macroscopic systems. Although the main body of the article is self-contained there are two supplemental notes on closely related topics,…
The postulates of von Neumann and Lüders concerning measurements in quantum mechanics are discussed and criticized in the context of a simple model proposed by Gisin. The main purpose of our paper is to analyze some mathematical aspects of that model and to draw some general lessons on the so-called ``measurement problem'' in quantum mechanics pointing towards the need to introduce general principles that determine the law for the stochastic time evolution of states of individual physical systems.
We report on recent developments towards a relativistic quantum mechanical theory of motion for a fixed, finite number of electrons, photons, and their anti-particles, as well as its possible generalizations to other particles and interactions.
In this paper, we present a mathematically rigorous quantum-mechanical treatment of a one-dimensional motion of a particle in the Calogero potential $αx^{-2}$. Although the problem is quite old and well-studied, we believe that our consideration, based on a uniform approach to constructing a correct quantum-mechanical description for systems with singular potentials and/or boundaries, proposed in our previous works, adds some new points to its solution. To demonstrate that a consideration of the Calogero problem requires mathematical accuracy, we discuss some "paradoxes" inherent in the "naive…
