Quantum operations represented by completely positive maps encompass many of the physical processes and have been very powerful in describing quantum computation and information processing tasks. We introduce the notion of relative phase change for a quantum system undergoing quantum operation. We find that the relative phase shift of a system not only depends on the state of the system, but also depends on the initial state of the ancilla with which it might have interacted in the past. The relative phase change during a sequence of quantum operations is shown to be non-additive in nature. This property can attribute a `memory' to a quantum channel. Also the notion of relative phase shift helps us to define what we call `in-phase quantum channels'. We will present the relative phase shift for a qubit undergoing depolarizing channel and complete randomization and discuss their implications.
We extend the concept of the relative error to mixed-state cloning and related physical operations, in which the ancilla contains some a priori information about the input state. The lower bound on the relative error is obtained. It is shown that this result contributes to the stronger no-cloning theorem.
We define what it means for a state in a convex cone of states on a space of observables to be generalized-entangled relative to a subspace of the observables, in a general ordered linear spaces framework for operational theories. This extends the notion of ordinary entanglement in quantum information theory to a much more general framework. Some important special cases are described, in which the distinguished observables are subspaces of the observables of a quantum system, leading to results like the identification of generalized unentangled states with Lie-group-theoretic coherent states w…
The goal of the present paper is to derive some conditions on saturation of (strong) subadditivity inequality for the stochastic matrices. The notion of relative entropy of stochastic matrices is introduced by mimicking quantum relative entropy. Some properties of this concept are listed and the connection between the entropy of the stochastic quantum operations and that of stochastic matrices are discussed.
Everett's concept of relative state can be viewed as a map that contains information about correlations between measurement outcomes on two quantum systems. We demonstrate how geometric properties of the relative state map can be used to develop operationally well-defined measures of the total correlation in bipartite quantum systems of arbitrary state space dimension. These measures are invariant under local unitary transformations and non-increasing under local operations. We show that some known correlation measures have a natural interpretation in terms of relative states.
In [Gallego and Aolita, Physical Review X 5, 041008 (2015)], the authors proposed a definition for the relative entropy of steering and showed that the resulting quantity is a convex steering monotone. Here we advocate for a different definition for relative entropy of steering, based on well grounded concerns coming from quantum Shannon theory. We prove that this modified relative entropy of steering is a convex steering monotone. Furthermore, we establish that it is uniformly continuous and faithful, in both cases giving quantitative bounds that should be useful in applications. We also cons…
We consider the case of a $\sqrt{\mathrm{SWAP}}$ quantum gate and its optimized entangling action, via continuous dynamical decoupling, in the presence of dephasing noise. We illustrate the procedure in the specific case where only the two-qubit operation is controlled and no single-qubit operations are included in the description. To compare the optimized dynamics in the presence of noise with the ideal case, we use the standard fidelity measure. Then we discuss the importance of using optimized gates in the quantum operational-probabilistic theory. Because of their importance for the explici…
Based on the resource theory for quantifying the coherence of quantum channels, we introduce a new coherence quantifier for quantum channels via maximum relative entropy. We prove that the maximum relative entropy for coherence of quantum channels is directly related to the maximally coherent channels under a particular class of superoperations, which results in an operational interpretation of the maximum relative entropy for coherence of quantum channels. We also introduce the conception of sub-superchannels and sub-superchannel discrimination. For any quantum channels, we show that the adva…
We demonstrate the irreversibility of asymptotic entanglement manipulation under quantum operations that completely preserve the positivity of partial transpose (PPT), resolving a major open problem in quantum information theory. Our key tool is a new efficiently computable additive lower bound for the asymptotic relative entropy of entanglement with respect to PPT states, which can be used to evaluate the entanglement cost under local operations and classical communication (LOCC). We find that for any rank-two mixed state supporting on the $3\otimes3$ antisymmetric subspace, the amount of dis…
We analyse possibility to extend a quantum operation (sub-unital normal CP linear map on the algebra $B(H)$ of bounded operators on a separable Hilbert space $H$) to the space of all operators on $H$ relatively bounded w.r.t. a given positive unbounded operator. We show that a quantum operation $\,Φ\,$ can be uniquely extended to a bounded linear operator on the Banach space of all $\sqrt{G}$-bounded operators on $H$ provided that the operation $Φ$ is $G$-limited: the predual operation $Φ_*$ maps the set of positive trace class operators $ρ$ with finite $\mathrm{Tr}ρG$ into itself. Assuming th…
It has been proposed that a quantum computer can be constructed based on electron spins in quantum dots or based on a superconducting nanocircuit. During two-qubit operations, the fluctuation of the coupling parameters is a critical factor. One source of such fluctuation is the stirring of the background charges. We focused on the influence of this fluctuation on a coupled spin qubit system. The induced fluctuation in exchange coupling changes the amount of entanglement, fidelity, and purity. In our previous study, the background charge fluctuations were found to be an important channel of dep…
We propose a simple method for realizing a multiqubit phase gate of one qubit simultaneously controlling $n$ target qubits, by using three-level quantum systems (i.e., qutrits) coupled to a cavity or resonator. The gate can be implemented using one operational step and without need of classical pulses, and no photon is populated during the operation. Thus, the gate operation is greatly simplified and decoherence from the cavity decay is much reduced, when compared with the previous proposals. In addition, the operation time is independent of the number of qubits and no adjustment of the qutrit…
We show that the new quantum extension of Renyi's α-relative entropies, introduced recently by Muller-Lennert, Dupuis, Szehr, Fehr and Tomamichel, J. Math. Phys. 54, 122203, (2013), and Wilde, Winter, Yang, Commun. Math. Phys. 331, (2014), have an operational interpretation in the strong converse problem of quantum hypothesis testing. Together with related results for the direct part of quantum hypothesis testing, known as the quantum Hoeffding bound, our result suggests that the operationally relevant definition of the quantum Renyi relative entropies depends on the parameter α: for α<1, the …
A fundamental approach for the characterization and quantification of all kinds of resources is to study the conversion between different resource objects under certain constraints. Here we analyze, from a resource-non-specific standpoint, the optimal efficiency of resource formation and distillation tasks with only a single copy of the given quantum state, thereby establishing a unified framework of one-shot quantum resource manipulation. We find general bounds on the optimal rates characterized by resource measures based on the smooth max/min-relative entropies and hypothesis testing relativ…
Recently, an interesting quantity called the quantum Renyi divergence (or "sandwiched" Renyi relative entropy) was defined for pairs of positive semi-definite operators $ρ$ and $σ$. It depends on a parameter $α$ and acts as a parent quantity for other relative entropies which have important operational significances in quantum information theory: the quantum relative entropy and the min- and max-relative entropies. There is, however, another relative entropy, called the 0-relative Renyi entropy, which plays a key role in the analysis of various quantum information-processing tasks in the one-s…

We establish an operational theory of coherence (or of superposition) in quantum systems, by focusing on the optimal rate of performance of certain tasks. Namely, we introduce the two basic concepts - "coherence distillation" and "coherence cost" in the processing quantum states under so-called incoherent operations [Baumgratz/Cramer/Plenio, Phys. Rev. Lett. 113:140401 (2014)]. We then show that in the asymptotic limit of many copies of a state, both are given by simple single-letter formulas: the distillable coherence is given by the relative entropy of coherence (in other words, we give the …
A quantum computer that can be constructed based on a superconducting nanocircuits has previously been proposed. We examine the effect of background charge fluctuations on a coupled Josephson charge qubit system used in such a computer. In previous work, the background charge fluctuations were found to be an important dephasing channel for a single Josephson qubit. We investigate the effect of fluctuations in the bias at the charge degeneracy point of a Josephson charge qubit system. Evaluated quantities are gate fidelity and diagonal elements of the qubit's density matrix. The fluctuation lea…
Systematic errors hinder precise quantum control. Pulse length errors (PLEs) and off-resonance errors (OREs) are typical systematic errors that are encountered during one-qubit control. A composite pulse (CP) can help compensate for the effects of systematic errors during quantum operation. Several CPs that are robust against either PLE or ORE have been identified. However, few attempts have been made to construct CPs that are robust against both errors (bi-robust). We develop a novel bi-robust CP for one-qubit operations by modifying a PLE robust CP, which exhibits a shorter operation time th…
The dynamics of a quantum XOR gate operation in a two-qubit system being coupled to a bath of quantum harmonic oscillators is investigated. Upon applying the numerical quasiadiabatic propagator path integral method, we obtain the numerically precise time-resolved evolution of this interacting two-qubit system in presence of time-dependent external fields without further approximations. We simulate the dissipative gate operation for characteristic experimental realizations of condensed matter qubits; namely, the flux and charge qubits realized in superconducting Josephson systems and qubits for…
Recent developments in quantum computing suggest that it could be possible to make conditional changes to the state of a quantum mechanical system without resorting to classical observation. It is accomplished through collective response of atoms comprising a lattice for the system and involves relative phase adjustments only. We exploit this possibility and describe experimental designs that could help elucidate quantum mechanical properties of these systems and distinguish between interpretations.
Several information measures have recently been defined which capture the notion of "recoverability." In particular, the fidelity of recovery quantifies how well one can recover a system $A$ of a tripartite quantum state, defined on systems $ABC$, by acting on system $C$ alone. The relative entropy of recovery is an associated measure in which the fidelity is replaced by relative entropy. In this paper, we provide concrete operational interpretations of the aforementioned recovery measures in terms of a computational decision problem and a hypothesis testing scenario. Specifically, we show tha…
We propose a straightforward experimental protocol to test whether qubit-environment entanglement is generated during pure dephasing of a qubit. The protocol is implemented using only measurements and operations on the qubit - it does not involve the measurement of the system-environment state of interest, but the preparation and measurement of the qubit in two simple variations. A difference in the time dependencies of qubit coherence between the two cases testifies to the presence of entanglement in the state of interest. Furthermore, it signifies that the environment-induced noise experienc…
Introducing contravariant trace-densities for quantum states, we restore one to one correspondence between quantum operations described by normal CP maps and their trace densities as Hermitian positive operator-valued contravariant kernels. The CB-norm distance between two quantum operations with type one input algebras is explicitly expressed in terms of these densities, and this formula is also extended to a generalized CB-distances between quantum operations with type two inputs. A larger C-distance is given as the natural norm-distance for the channel densities, and another, Helinger type …
Quantum error-correcting codes are many-body entangled states that are prepared and measured using complex sequences of entangling operations. Each element of such an entangling sequence introduces noise to delicate quantum information during the encoding or reading out of the code. It is important therefore to find efficient entangling protocols to avoid the loss of information. Here we propose an experiment that uses only global entangling operations to encode an arbitrary logical qubit to either the five-qubit repetition code or the five-qubit code, with a six-ion Coulomb crystal architectu…
Audenaert and Datta recently introduced a two-parameter family of relative Rényi entropies, known as the $α$-$z$-relative Rényi entropies. The definition of the $α$-$z$-relative Rényi entropy unifies all previously proposed definitions of the quantum Rényi divergence of order $α$ under a common framework. Here we will prove that the $α$-$z$-relative Rényi entropies are a proper generalization of the quantum relative entropy by computing the limit of the $α$-$z$ divergence as $α$ approaches one and $z$ is an arbitrary function of $α$. We also show that certain operationally relevant families of…
We construct a categorical framework for nonlinear postquantum inference, with embeddings of convex closed sets of suitable reflexive Banach spaces as objects and pullbacks of Brègman quasi-nonexpansive mappings (in particular, constrained maximisations of Brègman relative entropies) as morphisms. It provides a nonlinear convex analytic analogue of Chencov's programme of geometric study of categories of linear positive maps between spaces of states, a working model of Mielnik's nonlinear transmitters, and a setting for nonlinear resource theories (with monoids of Brègman quasi-nonexpansive map…
We replace the Josephson junction defining a three-junction flux qubit's properties with a tunable direct current superconducting quantum interference devices (DC-SQUID) in order to tune the qubit gap during the experiment. We observe different gaps as a function of the external magnetic pre-biasing field and the local magnetic field through the DC-SQUID controlled by high-bandwidth on chip control lines. The persistent current and gap behavior correspond to numerical simulation results. We set the sensitivity of the gap on the control lines during the sample design stage. With a tuning range …
Efficient operation sequences to couple and interchange quantum information between quantum dot spin qubits of different kinds are derived using exchange interactions. In the qubit encoding of a single-spin qubit, a singlet-triplet qubit, and an exchange-only (triple-dot) qubit, some of the single-qubit interactions remain on during the entangling operation; this greatly simplifies the operation sequences that construct entangling operations. In the ideal setup, the gate operations use the intra-qubit exchange interactions only once. The limitations of the entangling sequences are discussed, a…
Building upon work by Matsumoto, we show that the quantum relative entropy with full-rank second argument is determined by four simple axioms: i) Continuity in the first argument, ii) the validity of the data-processing inequality, iii) additivity under tensor products, and iv) super-additivity. This observation has immediate implications for quantum thermodynamics, which we discuss. Specifically, we demonstrate that, under reasonable restrictions, the free energy is singled out as a measure of athermality. In particular, we consider an extended class of Gibbs-preserving maps as free operation…
Passive states, i.e., those states from which no work can be extracted via unitary operations, play an important role in the foundations and applications of quantum thermodynamics. They generalize the familiar Gibbs thermal states, which are the sole passive states being stable under tensor product. Here, we introduce a partial order on the set of passive states that captures the idea of a passive state being virtually cooler than another one. This partial order, which we build by defining the notion of relative passivity, offers a fine-grained comparison between passive states based on virtua…
We prove the ergodic version of the quantum Stein's lemma which was conjectured by Hiai and Petz. The result provides an operational and statistical interpretation of the quantum relative entropy as a statistical measure of distinguishability, and contains as a special case the quantum version of the Shannon-McMillan theorem for ergodic states. A version of the quantum relative Asymptotic Equipartition Property (AEP) is given.
In [Berta et al., J. Math. Phys. 56, 022205 (2015)], we recently proposed Renyi generalizations of the conditional quantum mutual information of a tripartite state on $ABC$ (with $C$ being the conditioning system), which were shown to satisfy some properties that hold for the original quantity, such as non-negativity, duality, and monotonicity with respect to local operations on the system $B$ (with it being left open to show that the Renyi quantity is monotone with respect to local operations on system $A$). Here we define a Renyi squashed entanglement and a Renyi quantum discord based on a R…
