We present a scheme able to protect the quantum states of a cavity mode against the decohering effects of photon loss. The scheme preserves quantum states with a definite parity, and improves previous proposals for decoherence control in cavities. It is implemented by sending single atoms, one by one, through the cavity. The atomic state gets first correlated to the photon number parity. The wrong parity results in an atom in the upper state. The atom in this state is then used to inject a photon in the mode via adiabatic transfer, correcting the field parity. By solving numerically the exact master equation of the system, we show that the protection of simple quantum states could be experimentally demonstrated using presently available experimental apparatus.
We give a detailed account of the derivation of a master equation for two coupled cavities in the presence of dissipation. The analytical solution is presented and physical limits of interest are discussed. Firstly we show that the decay rate of initial coherent states can be significantly modified if the two cavities have different decay rates and are weakly coupled through a wire. Moreover, we show that also decoherence rates can be substantially altered by manipulation of physical parameters. Conditions for experimental realizations are discussed.
The system of an atom couples to two distinct optical cavities with phase decoherence is studied by making use of a dynamical algebraic method. We adopt the concurrence to characterize the entanglement between atom and cavities or between two optical cavities in the presence of the phase decoherence. It is found that the entanglement between atom and cavities can be controlled by adjusting the detuning parameter. Finally, we show that even if the atom is initially prepared in a maximally mixed state, it can also entangle the two mode cavity fields.
A system consisting of two identical single-mode cavities coupled to a common environment is investigated within the framework of algebraic dynamics. Based on the left and right representations of the Heisenberg-Weyl algebra, the algebraic structure of the master equation is explored and exact analytical solutions of this system are obtained. It is shown that for such a system, the environment can produce entanglement in contrast to its commonly believed role of destroying entanglement. In addition, the collective zero-mode eigen solutions of the system are found to be free of decoherence agai…
We examine the entanglement properties of a system that represents two driven microwave cavities each optomechanically coupled to two separate driven optical cavities which are connected by a single-mode optical fiber. The results suggest that it may be possible to achieve near-maximal entanglement of the microwave cavities, thus allowing a teleportation scheme to enable interactions for hybrid quantum computing of superconducting qubits with optical interconnects.
We present protocols to generate quantum entanglement on nonlocal magnons in hybrid systems composed of yttrium iron garnet (YIG) spheres, microwave cavities and a superconducting (SC) qubit. In the schemes, the YIGs are coupled to respective microwave cavities in resonant way, and the SC qubit is placed at the center of the cavities, which interacts with the cavities simultaneously. By exchanging the virtual photon, the cavities can indirectly interact in the far-detuning regime. Detailed protocols are presented to establish entanglement for two, three and arbitrary $N$ magnons with reasonabl…
The exact reduced dynamics for the independent oscillator model in the RWA approximation at zero and finite temperatures is derived. It is shown that the information about the interaction and the environment is encapsulated into three time dependent coefficients of the master equation, one of which vanishes in the zero temperature case. In currently used optical cavities all the information about the field dynamics is contained into {\it two} (or three) experimentally accesible and physically meaningful real functions of time. From the phenomenological point of view it suffices then to careful…
We propose a scheme for entangling the optical and microwave output modes of the respective cavities by using a micro mechanical resonator. The micro-mechanical resonator on one side is capacitively coupled to the microwave cavity and on the other side is coupled to a high finesses optical cavity. We then show how this continuous variable entanglement can be profitably used to teleport the non-Gaussian number state |1> and the superposition (|0>+|1>)/\surd2 from the microwave cavity output mode onto an output of optical cavity mode with fidelity much larger than the no-cloning limit.
We investigate the phenomenon of sudden transition between classical and quantum decoherence in the study of quantum discord for a dissipative cavity QED system, which consists of two noninteracting two-level atoms, each trapped in a dissipative cavity. It is found that the quantum discord between two atoms, which are prepared initially in the X-type quantum states, is not destroyed by the dissipation of the cavities for a finite time interval and the stationary quantum discord can arise in the interaction of atoms with cavities as the time approach to infinite. The transition time is sensitiv…
We present a scheme for controlling the decoherence of a linear superposition of two coherent states with opposite phases in a high-Q microwave cavity, based on the injection of appropriately prepared ``probe'' and ``feedback'' Rydberg atoms, improving the one presented in [D. Vitali et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 79, 2442 (1997)]. In the present scheme, the information transmission from the probe to the feedback atom is directly mediated by a second auxiliary cavity. The detection efficiency for the probe atom is no longer a critical parameter, and the decoherence time of the superposition state ca…
We study the entanglement of the superconducting charge qubit with the quantized electromagnetic field in a microwave cavity. It can be controlled dynamically by a classical external field threading the SQUID within the charge qubit. Utilizing the controllable quantum entanglement, we can demonstrate the dynamic process of the quantum storage of information carried by charge qubit. On the other hand, based on this engineered quantum entanglement, we can also demonstrate a progressive decoherence of charge qubit with quantum jump due to the coupling with the cavity field in quasi-classical stat…
We study a pair of anharmonic microwave cavities that is connected by an optical fiber. The photonic spectral density characterizes the evolution of the coupled cavities after the system has been prepared in a Fock or N00N state. We evaluate the photonic spectral density within the recursive projection method and find that the anharmonicity has no substantial effect on the spectral properties. In all cases the photonic spectral density has a Gaussian envelope for large photon numbers.
Three-dimensional (3D) superconducting microwave cavities with large mode volumes typically have high quality factors ($>10^6$). This is due to a reduced sensitivity to surface dielectric losses, which is the limiting source of dissipation in two-dimensional transmission line resonators. In recent years, 3D microwave cavities have been extensively used for coupling and interacting with superconducting quantum bits (qubits), providing a versatile platform for quantum information processing and hybrid quantum systems. A current issue that has arisen is that 3D superconducting cavities do not per…
The decay of a single photon in a microwave cavity is shown to be retarded by interaction with a resonant two-level atom in the experimental setup recently developed by Nogues and co-workers [see G. Nogues, A. Rauschenbeutel, S. Osnaghi, M. Brune, J. M. Raimond and S. Haroche, Nature vol 400, 239(1999)]. The effect may be interpreted in terms of the temporary removal of the photon from the cavity thereby protecting it from the effects of the environment to wich the cavity is coupled. Realistic parameters lead to a significative increase of the survival probability of the photon subsequently to…
Photons in cavities have been already used for the realization of simple quantum gates [Q.A. Turchette, Phys. Rev. Lett. 75,4710 (1995)]. We present a method for combatting decoherence in this case.
Thermal microwave states are omnipresent noise sources in superconducting quantum circuits covering all relevant frequency regimes. We use them as a probe to identify three second-order decoherence mechanisms of a superconducting transmon. First, we quantify the efficiency of a resonator filter in the dispersive Jaynes-Cummings regime and find evidence for parasitic loss channels. Second, we probe second-order noise in the low-frequency regime and demonstrate the expected $T^{3}$ temperature dependence of the qubit dephasing rate. Finally, we show that qubit parameter fluctuations due to two-l…
We propose a feasible and efficient scheme to generate $N$-atom $W$-class states in spatially separated cavities without using any classical driving pulses. We adopt the model in which the couplings between different atoms are mediated only by virtual excitations of the cavity and fiber fields, so the scheme is insensitive to the cavity decay and fiber photon leakage. We carry out both theoretical investigation in a decoherence-free subspace and numerical calculation accounting for decoherence due to the atomic spontaneous emission as well as the decay of cavity and fiber modes. The theoretica…
Fast, efficient, and low power modulation of light at microwave frequencies is crucial for chip-scale classical and quantum processing as well as for long-range networks of superconducting quantum processors. A successful approach to bridge the gap between microwave and optical photons has been to use intermediate platforms such as acoustic waves, which can couple efficiently to a variety of quantum systems. Here, we use gigahertz-frequency focusing surface acoustic wave cavities on GaAs that are piezo-electrically coupled to superconducting circuits and parametrically coupled, via strain, to …
Trapped ions are among the most promising platforms for quantum technologies. They are at the heart of the most precise clocks and sensors developed to date, which exploit the quantum coherence of a single electronic or motional degree of freedom of an ion. However, future high precision quantum metrology will require the use of entangled states of several degrees of freedom. Here we propose a protocol capable of generating high N00N states where the entanglement is shared between the motion of a trapped ion and an electromagnetic cavity mode, a so called hybrid configuration. We prove the fea…
Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond have become an important tool for quantum technologies. All of these applications rely on long coherence times of electron and nuclear spins associated with these centers. Here, we study the energy level anti-crossings of an NV center in diamond coupled to a first-shell 13C nuclear spin in a small static magnetic field. These level anti-crossings occur for specific orientations of the static magnetic field due to the strong non-secular components of the Hamiltonian. At these orientations we observe decoherence-free subspaces, where the electron spin coh…
We propose an experimental setup, feasible with present day technology, involving two highquality- factor cavities, one Ramsey zone and a two-level atom which interacts with them. The dynamics in the cavities is modeled by a dissipative dispersive Jaynes-Cummings model. Analytical expresions for the evolution superoperator in each part of the proposed setup and for the concurrence between the atom and the first cavity are given, and the pairwise entanglement of the subsystems is calculated numerically. We consider initial separable states given by the tensor product of a superposition of the t…
We propose a method for transferring quantum entangled states of two photonic cat-state qubits (cqubits) from two microwave cavities to the other two microwave cavities. This proposal is realized by using four microwave cavities coupled to a superconducting flux qutrit. Because of using four cavities with different frequencies, the inter-cavity crosstalk is significantly reduced. Since only one coupler qutrit is used, the circuit resources is minimized. The entanglement transfer is completed with a single-step operation only, thus this proposal is quite simple. The third energy level of the co…
We discuss how to generate entangled coherent states of four \textrm{microwave} resonators \textrm{(a.k.a. cavities)} coupled by a superconducting qubit. We also show \textrm{that} a GHZ state of four superconducting qubits embedded in four different resonators \textrm{can be created with this scheme}. In principle, \textrm{the proposed method} can be extended to create an entangled coherent state of $n$ resonators and to prepare a Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) state of $n$ qubits distributed over $n$ cavities in a quantum network. In addition, it is noted that four resonators coupled by a…
In this paper, we study the fast and noise-resistant population transfer, quantum entangled states preparation, and quantum entangled states' transition by constructing the shortcuts to adiabatic passage (STAP) for multiparticle based on the approach of "Lewis-Riesenfeld invariants" in distant cavity quantum electronic dynamics (QED) system. Numerical simulation demonstrates that all of the schemes are fast and robust against the decoherence caused by atomic spontaneous emission and photon leakage. Moreover, not only the total operation time but also the robustness in each scheme against decoh…
Quantum state transfer and teleportation, with qubits encoded in internal states of the atoms in cavities, among spatially separated nodes of a quantum network in decoherence-free subspace are proposed, based on a cavity-assisted interaction by single-photon pulses. We show in details the implementation of a logic-qubit Hadamard gate and a two-logic-qubit conditional gate, and discuss the experimental feasibility of our scheme.
We show how an initially prepared quantum state of a radiation mode in a cavity can be preserved for a long time using a feedback scheme based on the injection of appropriately prepared atoms. We present a feedback scheme both for optical cavities, which can be continuously monitored by a photodetector, and for microwave cavities, which can be monitored only indirectly via the detection of atoms that have interacted with the cavity field. We also discuss the possibility of applying these methods for decoherence control in quantum information processing.
We study photon localisation and delocalisation in a system of two nonlinear cavities with intensity-dependent coupling. It is shown that complete localisation or delocalisation is possible for proper choices of the strengths of nonlinearity, detuning and inter-cavity coupling. Role of the relative phase in the initial superposition in attaining localisation and delocalisation is discussed. Effects of dissipation and decoherence are considered and the use of quantum interference in reducing dissipation is explored. Many of the features of the system are shown to be the consequences of quantum …
Using a microscopic master equation to account for the environmental effects, we compute the decoherence culminated during the propagation of a microwave pulse of arbitrary shape through a superconducting qubit. It is shown that the qubit decoherence vanishes and the pulse shape remains absorption-free when the latter adopts a soliton shape with $nπ$ area. Otherwise, the environmental feedback decelerates the velocity of the soliton envelop and induces an monotonic increase of phase in the microwave. A pulse of non-$nπ$ area thus ramifies into a transparent part that travels decoherence-free a…
Motivated by the need for communication of coherent state-based qubits in quantum computers, we introduce a method for perfect transferring of an arbitrary superposition of coherent states between two distant nodes of a linear array of three semiconductor QDs. The QDs trapped in a system of coupled cavities. In this method, the field mode of the cavities, as the resource of transferring of quantum states, are only virtually excited which minimizes the effect of decoherence due to photon loss.
We propose a scheme for realizing two-qubit quantum phase gates with two nonidentical quantum dots trapped in two coupled photonic crystal cavities and driven by classical laser fields. During the gate operation, neither the cavity modes nor the quantum dots are excited, so the decoherence can be suppressed. The system can acquire a phase conditional upon the states of the quantum dots, which can be used to realize the controlled phase gate.
Carpet-type structures constitute an ideal laboratory to study and analyze the robustness of the interference process that underlies this phenomenon against the harmful effects of decoherence. Here, without losing any generality, for simplicity, the case of a particle with a mass m is considered and described by a localized state corresponding to the ground state of a square box of width w, which is released inside a wider cavity (with a width L > w). The effects of decoherence are then numerically investigated by means of a simple dynamical model that captures the essential features of the ph…
We present a comprehensive study of internal quality factors in superconducting stub-geometry 3-dimensional cavities made of aluminum. We use wet etching, annealing and electrochemichal polishing to improve the as machined quality factor. We find that the dominant loss channel is split between two-level system loss and an unknown source with 60:40 proportion. A total of 17 cavities of different purity, resonance frequency and size were studied. Our treatment results in reproducible cavities, with ten of them showing internal quality factors above 80 million at a power corresponding to an avera…
We propose a scheme for implementing quantum gates for two atoms trapped in distant cavities connected by an optical fiber. The effective long-distance coupling between the two distributed qubits is achieved without excitation and transportation of photons through the optical fiber. Since the cavity modes and fiber mode are never populated and the atoms undergo no transitions, the gate operation is insensitive to the decoherence effect when the thermal photons in the environment are negligible. The scheme opens promising perspectives for networking quantum information processors and implementi…
The strong light-matter coupling attainable in optical cavities enables the generation of highly squeezed states of atomic ensembles. It was shown in [Phys. Rev. A 66, 022314 (2002)] how an effective one-axis twisting Hamiltonian can be realized in a cavity setup. Here, we extend this work and show how an effective two-axis twisting Hamiltonian can be realized in a similar cavity setup. We compare the two schemes in order to characterize their advantages. In the absence of decoherence, the two-axis Hamiltonian leads to more squeezing than the one-axis Hamiltonian. If limited by decoherence fro…
We show that the temperature of a cavity field can be drastically varied by its interaction with suitably-entangled atom pairs (dimers) traversing the cavity under realistic atomic decoherence. To this end we resort to the hitherto untapped resource of naturally entangled dimers whose state can be simply controlled via molecular dissociation, collisions forming the dimer, or unstable dimers such as positronium. Depending on the chosen state of the dimer, the cavity-field mode can be driven to a steady-state temperature that is either much lower or much higher than the ambient temperature, desp…
Spin-photon interfaces based on solid-state atomic defects have enabled a variety of key applications in quantum information processing. To maximize the light-matter coupling strength, defects are often placed inside nanoscale devices. Efficiently coupling light and microwave radiation into these structures is an experimental challenge, especially in cryogenic or high vacuum environments with limited sample access. In this work, we demonstrate a fiber-based scanning probe that simultaneously couples light into a planar photonic circuit and delivers high power microwaves for driving electron sp…
We explore the role played by the intrinsic decoherence in superconducting charge qubits in the presence of a microwave field applied as a magnetic flux. We study how the delayed creation of entanglement, which is opposite to the sudden death of entanglement, can be induced. We compute the time evolution of the population inversion, total correlation and entanglement, taking into account the junction mixed state and dissipation of the cavity field. We show that although decoherence destroys the correlation of the junction and field, information of the initial state may be obtained via quasi-pr…
In niobium superconducting radio frequency (SRF) accelerating cavities a decrease of the quality factor at lower fields - a so called \emph{low field Q slope or LFQS} - has been a long-standing unexplained effect. By extending the high $Q$ measurement techniques to ultralow fields we discover two previously unknown features of the effect: i) saturation at rf fields lower than $E_\mathrm{acc} \sim 0.1$~MV/m; ii) strong degradation enhancement by growing thicker niobium pentoxide. Our findings suggest that the LFQS may be caused by the two level systems in the natural niobium oxide on the inner …
We propose a method to create superpositions of two macroscopic quantum states of a single-mode microwave cavity field interacting with a superconducting charge qubit. The decoherence of such superpositions can be determined by measuring either the Wigner function of the cavity field or the charge qubit states. Then the quality factor Q of the cavity can be inferred from the decoherence of the superposed states. The proposed method is experimentally realizable within current technology even when the $Q$ value is relatively low, and the interaction between the qubit and the cavity field is weak…
Non-universal correlations due to localization are observed in statistical properties of experimental eigenfunctions of quantum chaotic and disordered microwave cavities. Varying energy {E} and mean free path {l} enable us to experimentally tune from localized to delocalized states. Large level-to-level Inverse Participation Ratio (IPR I_{2}) fluctuations are observed for the disordered billiards, whose distribution is strongly asymmetric about <I_{2}>. The density auto-correlations of eigenfunctions are shown to decay exponentially and the decay lengths are experimentally determined. All the …
We study the statistics of the experimental eigenfunctions of chaotic and disordered microwave billiards in terms of the moments of their spatial distributions, such as the Inverse Participation Ratio (IPR) and density-density auto-correlation. A path from chaos to disorder is described in terms of increasing IPR. In the chaotic, ballistic limit, the data correspond well with universal results from random matrix theory. Deviations from universal distributions are observed due to disorder induced localization, and for the weakly disordered case the data are well-described by including finite co…
We study microwave-driven cooling in a superconducting flux qubit subjected to environment noises. For the weak decoherence, our analytical results agree well with the experimental observations near the degeneracy point and show that the microwave amplitude for optimal cooling should depend linearly on the dc flux detuning. With the decoherence increasing, more vibrational degrees of freedom couple in, making the ordinary cooling method less effective or even fail. We propose an improved cooling method, which can eliminate the perturbation of additional vibrational degrees of freedom hence kee…
We study ensembles of Rydberg atoms in a confined electromagnetic environment such as provided by a microwave cavity. The competition between standard free space Ising type and cavity-mediated interactions leads to the emergence of different regimes where the particle-particle couplings range from the typical van der Waals $r^{-6}$ behavior to $r^{-3}$ and to $r$-independence. We apply a Ramsey spectroscopic technique to map the two-body interactions into a characteristic signal such as intensity and contrast decay curves. As opposed to previous treatments requiring high-densities for consider…
We propose an experimentally feasible scheme for dissipative preparation of tripartite entangled state with atoms separately trapped in an array of three coupled cavities. The combination of coherent driving fields and quantum-jump-based feedback control will drive the system into a non-equilibrium steady state, which has a nearly perfect overlap with the genuine three-atom singlet state. Different control strategies are investigated and the corresponding optimal parameters are confirmed. Moreover, the fidelity of target state is insensitive to detection inefficiencies, and it oversteps 90\% f…
Frequency conversion between microwave and optical photons is a key enabling technology to create links between superconducting quantum processors and to realize distributed quantum networks. We propose a microwave-optical transduction platform based on long-coherence-time superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavities coupled to electro-optic optical cavities to mitigate the loss mechanisms that limit the attainment of high conversion efficiency. In the design, we optimize the microwave-optical field overlap and optical coupling losses, while achieving long microwave and optical photon lifeti…
Conditional expectation values of quantum mechanical observables reflect unique non-classical correlations, and are generally sensitive to decoherence. We consider the circumstances under which such sensitivity to decoherence is removed, namely, when the measurement process is subjected to conservation laws. Specifically, we address systems with additive conserved quantities and identify sufficient conditions for the system state such that its coherence plays no role in the conditional expectation values of observables that commute with the conserved quantity. We discuss our findings for a spe…
By exploiting a system of three distant cavities, we propose a scheme for constructing tripartite entangled coherent GHZ and W states which are robust due to the photon losses in the cavities. Each of cavities is doped with a semiconductor quantum dot. By the dynamics, the excitonic modes of quantum dots are enabled to exhibit entan-gled coherent GHZ and W states. Apart from the exciton losses, the master equation approach shows that when the populations of the field modes in the cavities are negli-gible the destruction of entanglement due to decoherence arises from photon losses, is effective…
We propose an experiment with two coupled microwave cavities and a "tunneling" photon observed by the passage of Rydberg atoms. We model the coupled cavities as in Ref. \cite{art1} and include dissipative effects as well as limited detection efficiency. We also consider realistic finite atom-field interaction times and provide for a simple analytical expression for the photon "tunneling" probability including all these effects. We show that for sufficiently small dissipation constants the effect can be observed with current experimental facilities.
We present a novel method to realize a multi-target-qubit controlled phase gate with one microwave photonic qubit simultaneously controlling $n-1$ target microwave photonic qubits. This gate is implemented with $n$ microwave cavities coupled to a superconducting flux qutrit. Each cavity hosts a microwave photonic qubit, whose two logic states are represented by the vacuum state and the single photon state of a single cavity mode, respectively. During the gate operation, the qutrit remains in the ground state and thus decoherence from the qutrit is greatly suppressed. This proposal requires onl…
Microwave cavity resonators are crucial components of many quantum technologies and are a promising platform for hybrid quantum systems, as their open architecture enables the integration of multiple subsystems inside the cavity volume. To support these subsystems within the cavity, auxiliary structures are often required, but the effects of these structures on the microwave cavity mode are difficult to predict due to a lack of a priori knowledge of the materials' response in the microwave regime. Understanding these effects becomes even more important when frequency matching is critical and t…
We propose a scheme for long-distance distribution of quantum entanglement in which the entanglement between qubits at intermediate stations of the channel is established by using bright light pulses in squeezed states coupled to the qubits in cavities with a weak dispersive interaction. The fidelity of the entanglement between qubits at the neighbor stations (10 km apart from each other) obtained by postselection through the balanced homodyne detection of 7 dB squeezed pulses can reach F=0.99 without using entanglement purification, at same time, the probability of successful generation of en…
A potential scheme is proposed to generate complete sets of entangled photons in the context of cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED). The scheme includes twice interactions of atoms with cavities, in which the first interaction is made in two-mode optical cavities and the second one exists in a microwave cavity. In the optical cavities the atoms are resonant with the cavity modes, while the detuned interaction of the atoms with a single-mode of the microwave cavity is driven by a classical field. We show that our scheme is carried out with higher efficiency than previeous schemes, and is close…
Hybrid quantum systems based on spin ensembles coupled to superconducting microwave cavities are promising candidates for robust experiments in cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) and for future technologies employing quantum mechanical effects. Currently the main source of decoherence in these systems is inho- mogeneous spin broadening, which limits their performance for the coherent transfer and storage of quantum information. Here we study the dynamics of a superconducting cavity strongly coupled to an ensemble of nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond. We experimentally observe for the first…
