A quantum communication architecture is being developed for long-distance, high-fidelity qubit teleportation. It uses an ultrabright narrowband source of polarization-entangled photons, plus trapped-atom quantum memories, and it is compatible with long-distance transmission over standard telecommunication fiber. This paper reports error models for the preceding teleportation architecture, and for an extension thereto which enables long-distance transmission and storage of Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states. The use of quantum error correction or entanglement purification to improve the performance of these quantum communication architectures is also discussed.

Quantum repeaters are essential ingredients for quantum networks that link distant quantum modules such as quantum computers and sensors. Motivated by distributed quantum computing and communication, quantum repeaters that relay discrete-variable quantum information have been extensively studied; while continuous-variable (CV) quantum information underpins a variety of quantum sensing and communication application, a quantum-repeater architecture for genuine CV quantum information remains largely unexplored. This paper reports a CV quantum-repeater architecture based on CV quantum teleportatio…
Quantum teleportation schemes in which operations are performed before establishing the quantum channel are not constrained by resource limits set in H.K.Lo and Bennett et al. We compare the standard teleportation protocol to the one proposed by Kak on the basis of the classical communication cost. Due to its unique architecture we study the problems in implementing Kak teleportation protocol.
Quantum teleportation enables networking participants to move an unknown quantum state between the nodes of a quantum network, and hence constitutes an essential element in constructing large-sale quantum processors with a quantum modular architecture. Herein, we propose two protocols for teleporting qubits through an N-node quantum network in a highly-entangled box-cluster state or chain-type cluster state. The proposed protocols are systematically scalable to an arbitrary finite number N and applicable to arbitrary size of modules. The protocol based on a box-cluster state is implemented on …
In this paper we propose a scheme to implement a quantum teleportation based on the current experimental design [Nature (London) 431, 162 (2004); ibid 445, 515 (2007)] in which superconducting charge qubits are capacitively coupled to a single high-Q superconducting coplanar resonator. As advantage of this architecture, it permits the use of multiqubit gates between non-nearest qubits and the realization of parallel gates. We consider the case of two qubits inside the resonator, where the teleportation is accomplished.
We introduce a generalized concept of quantum teleportation in the framework of quantum measurement and reversing operation. Our framework makes it possible to find an optimal protocol for quantum teleportation enabling a faithful transfer of unknown quantum states with maximum success probability up to the fundamental limit of the no-cloning theorem. Moreover, an optimized protocol in this generalized approach allows us to overcome noise in quantum channel beyond the reach of existing teleportation protocols without requiring extra qubit resources. Our proposed framework is applicable to mult…
We study quantum teleportation between two different types of optical qubits, one of which is "particle-like" and the other "field-like," via hybrid entangled states under the effects of decoherence. We find that teleportation from particle-like to field-like qubits can be achieved with a higher fidelity than that in the opposite direction. However, teleportation from field-like to particle-like qubits is found to be more efficient in terms of the success probabilities. Our study shows that the direction of teleportation should be considered an important factor in developing optical hybrid arc…
The stored-program architecture is canonical in classical computing, while its power has not been fully recognized for the quantum case. We study quantum information processing with stored quantum program states, i.e., using qubits instead of bits to encode quantum operations. We develop a stored-program model based on Choi states, following from channel-state duality, and a symmetry-based generalization of deterministic gate teleportation. Our model enriches the family of universal models for quantum computing, and can also be employed for tasks including quantum simulation and communication.
The architecture proposed by Duan, Lukin, Cirac, and Zoller (DLCZ) for long-distance quantum communication with atomic ensembles is analyzed. Its fidelity and throughput in entanglement distribution, entanglement swapping, and quantum teleportation is derived within a framework that accounts for multiple excitations in the ensembles as well as loss and asymmetries in the channel. The DLCZ performance metrics that are obtained are compared to the corresponding results for the trapped-atom quantum communication architecture that has been proposed by a team from the Massachusetts Institute of Tec…
A quantum computer has the potential to effciently solve problems that are intractable for classical computers. Constructing a large-scale quantum processor, however, is challenging due to errors and noise inherent in real-world quantum systems. One approach to this challenge is to utilize modularity--a pervasive strategy found throughout nature and engineering--to build complex systems robustly. Such an approach manages complexity and uncertainty by assembling small, specialized components into a larger architecture. These considerations motivate the development of a quantum modular architect…
Optical switches and rerouting network are main obstacles to realize optical quantum computer. In particular, both components have been considered as essential components to the measurement-based time-domain optical quantum computation, which has seen promising developments regarding scalability in the recent years. Realizing optical switches and rerouting network with sufficient performance is, however, experimentally challenging as they must have extremely low loss, small switching time, high repetition rate, and minimum optical nonlinearity. In this work, we present an optical quantum compu…
Quantum teleportation is a fundamental concept in quantum physics which now finds important applications at the heart of quantum technology including quantum relays, quantum repeaters and linear optics quantum computing (LOQC). Photonic implementations have largely focussed on achieving long distance teleportation due to its suitability for decoherence-free communication. Teleportation also plays a vital role in the scalability of photonic quantum computing, for which large linear optical networks will likely require an integrated architecture. Here we report the first demonstration of quantum…
Teleportation is a crucial element in fault-tolerant quantum computation and a complete understanding of its capacity is very important for the practical implementation of optimal fault-tolerant architectures. It is known that stabilizer codes support a natural set of gates that can be more easily implemented by teleportation than any other gates. These gates belong to the so called $\mathcal{C}_k$ hierarchy introduced by Gottesman and Chuang (Nature \textbf{402}, 390). Moreover, a subset of $\mathcal{C}_k$ gates, called semi-Clifford operations, can be implemented by an even simpler architect…

Reliable entangling gates for qubits encoded in single-photon states represent a major challenge on the road to scalable quantum computing architectures based on linear optics. In this work, we present two approaches to develop high-fidelity, near-deterministic controlled-sign-shift gates based on the techniques of quantum gate teleportation. On the one hand, teleportation in a discrete-variable setting, i.e., for qubits, offers unit-fidelity operations but suffers from low success probabilities. Here, we apply recent results on advanced linear optical Bell measurements to reach a near-determi…
Quantum computers promise dramatic speed ups for many computational tasks. For large-scale quantum computation however, the inevitable coupling of physical qubits to the noisy environment imposes a major challenge for a real-life implementation. A scheme introduced by Gottesmann and Chuang can help to overcome this difficulty by performing universal quantum gates in a fault-tolerant manner. Here, we report a non-trivial demonstration of this architecture by performing a teleportation-based two-qubit controlled-NOT gate through linear optics with a high-fidelity six-photon interferometer. The o…
We present a general method for finding loss-tolerant teleportation on large, entangled stabilizer states using only single-qubit measurements, known as \emph{stabilizer pathfinding} (SPF). For heralded loss, SPF is shown to generate optimally loss-tolerant measurement patterns on any given stabilizer state. Furthermore, SPF also provides highly loss-tolerant teleportation strategies when qubit loss is unheralded. We provide a fast algorithm for SPF that updates continuously as a state is generated and measured, which is therefore suitable for real-time implementation on a quantum-computing de…
Large-scale quantum computers will require quantum gate operations between widely separated qubits. A method for implementing such operations, known as quantum gate teleportation (QGT), requires only local operations, classical communication, and shared entanglement. We demonstrate QGT in a scalable architecture by deterministically teleporting a controlled-NOT (CNOT) gate between two qubits in spatially separated locations in an ion trap. The entanglement fidelity of our teleported CNOT is in the interval [0.845, 0.872] at the 95% confidence level. The implementation combines ion shuttling wi…
Solving optimization problems on near term quantum devices requires developing error mitigation techniques to cope with hardware decoherence and dephasing processes. We propose a mitigation technique based on the LHZ architecture. This architecture uses a redundant encoding of logical variables to solve optimization problems on fully programmable planar quantum chips. We discuss how this redundancy can be exploited to mitigate errors in quantum optimization algorithms. In the specific context of the quantum approximate optimization algorithm (QAOA), we show that errors can be significantly mit…
We propose a deterministic scheme for teleporting an unknown qubit through continuous-variable entangled states in superconducting circuits. The qubit is a superconducting two-level system and the bipartite quantum channel is a photonic entangled coherent state between two cavities. A Bell-type measurement performed on the hybrid state of solid and photonic states brings a discrete-variable unknown electronic state to a continuous-variable photonic cat state in a cavity mode. This scheme further enables applications for quantum information processing in the same architecture of circuit-QED suc…
Continuous variable measurement-based quantum computation on cluster states has in recent years shown great potential for scalable, universal, and fault-tolerant quantum computation when combined with the Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill (GKP) code and quantum error correction. However, no complete fault-tolerant architecture exists that includes everything from cluster state generation with finite squeezing to gate implementations with realistic noise and error correction. In this work, we propose a simple architecture for the preparation of a cluster state in three dimensions in which gates by gate…
Quantum information technology is set to transform critical network security using quantum cryptography, and complex scientific and engineering simulations with quantum computing. Quantum computer nodes may be based on a variety of systems, such as linear optics, ions, or solid state architectures such as NV-centers in diamond, semiconductor quantum dots or spins in silicon. Interfacing any of these platforms with photonic qubits in secure quantum networks will require quantum teleportation protocols to transfer the information, and matter-light teleportation has for some of these systems been…
With progress towards more compact quantum computing architectures, fundamental questions regarding the entanglement of indistinguishable particles need to be addressed. In a solid state device, this quest is naturally connected to the quantum correlations of electrons. Here, we investigate the entanglement between electrons, focusing on the entanglement of modes, the entanglement of particles and the effect of particle-number superselection rules. We elucidate the formation of mode and particle entanglement in strongly correlated materials and show that both represent important resources in q…

Efficient all-photonic quantum teleportation requires fast and deterministic sources of highly indistinguishable and entangled photons. Solid-state-based quantum emitters--notably semiconductor quantum dots--are a promising candidate for the role. However, despite the remarkable progress in nanofabrication, proof-of-concept demonstrations of quantum teleportation have highlighted that imperfections of the emitter still place a major roadblock in the way of applications. Here, rather than focusing on source optimization strategies, we deal with imperfections and study different teleportation pr…

We compare three different types of optical qubits for information transfer via quantum teleportation and direction transmission under photon losses. The three types of qubits are (1) qubits using the vacuum and the single-photon (VSP) states, (2) single-photon qubits using polarization degrees of freedom, i.e., polarized single-photon (PSP) qubits, and (3) coherent-state qubits that use two coherent states with opposite phases as the qubit basis. Our analysis shows that the teleportation scheme outperforms the direct transmission for most of cases as far as fidelities are concerned. Overall, …
To achieve the practical applications of near-term noisy quantum devices, low-cost ways to mitigate the noise damages in the devices are essential. In many applications, the noiseless state we want to prepare is often a pure state, which has recently inspired a range of purification-based quantum error mitigation proposals. The existing proposals either are limited to the suppressions of only the leading-order state preparation errors, or require a large number of long-range gates that might be challenging to implement depending on the qubit architecture. This article will provide an overview …
