With the exception of the harmonic oscillator, quantum wave-packets usually spread as time evolves. We show here that, using the nonlinear resonance between an internal frequency of a system and an external periodic driving, it is possible to overcome this spreading and build non-dispersive (or non-spreading) wave-packets which are well localized and follow a classical periodic orbit without spreading. From the quantum mechanical point of view, the non-dispersive wave-packets are time periodic eigenstates of the Floquet Hamiltonian, localized in the nonlinear resonance island. We discuss the general mechanism which produces the non-dispersive wave-packets, with emphasis on simple realization in the electronic motion of a Rydberg electron driven by a microwave field. We show the robustness of such wavepackets for a model one-dimensional as well as for realistic three dimensional atoms. We consider their essential properties such as the stability versus ionization, the characteristic energy spectrum and long lifetimes. The requirements for experiments aimed at observing such non-dispersive wave-packets are also considered. We also discuss other related phenomena in atomic and molecular physics as well as possible further extensions of the theory.
We propose the suppression of dispersive spreading of wave packets governed by the free-space Schrödinger equation with a periodically pulsed nonlinear term. Using asymptotic analysis, we construct stroboscopically-dispersionless quantum states that are physically reminiscent of, but mathematically different from, the well-known one-soliton solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a constant (time-independent) nonlinearity. Our analytics are strongly supported by full numerical simulations. The predicted dispersionless wave packets can move with arbitrary velocity and can be realiz…
Non dispersive electronic Rydberg wave packets may be created in atoms illuminated by a microwave field of circular polarization. We discuss the spontaneous emission from such states and show that the elastic incoherent component (occuring at the frequency of the driving field) dominates the spectrum in the semiclassical limit, contrary to earlier predictions. We calculate the frequencies of single photon emissions and the associated rates in the "harmonic approximation", i.e. when the wave packet has approximately a Gaussian shape. The results agree well with exact quantum mechanical calculat…
We report an experimental study of group-velocity dispersion effect on an entangled two-photon wavepacket, generated via spontaneous parametric down-conversion and propagating through a dispersive medium. Even in the case of using CW laser beam for pump, the biphoton wavepacket and the second-order correlation function spread significantly. The study and understanding of this phenomenon is of great importance for quantum information applications, such as quantum communication and distant clock synchronization.
We present theoretical study of revival phenomena for a wave packet initially well localized in a one-dimensional potential in the presence of an external periodic modulating field. The classical motion, revival, and super-revival time scale are derived exactly for wave packet excited in the one dimension box potential.
We show that combination of a linearly polarized resonant microwave field and a parallel static electric field may be used to create a non-dispersive electronic wavepacket in Rydberg atoms. The static electric field allows for manipulation of the shape of the elliptical trajectory the wavepacket is propagating on. Exact quantum numerical calculations for realistic experimental parameters show that the wavepacket evolving on a linear orbit can be very easily prepared in a laboratory either by a direct optical excitation or by preparing an atom in an extremal Stark state and then slowly switchin…
We study the quantum dynamics of a peculiar driven system, a Bose gas subjected to periodically kicked interactions. In the limit of infinitely short kicks, this system was recently shown to exhibit a fast exponential spreading of the wave function. Here we examine this problem for kicks or arbitrary duration and show that, in this case, the spreading is not exponential but rather subdiffusive at long time. This phenomenon stems from the competition between the kinetic and interaction energies within the kicks, which is absent in the limit of delta kicks. Our analysis further shows that the br…
Using a dynamical model relevant to cold-atom experiments, we show that long-lasting exponential spreading of wave packets in momentum space is possible. Numerical results are explained via a pseudo-classical map, both qualitatively and quantitatively. Possible applications of our findings are also briefly discussed.
In the framework of the paraxial and of the slowly varying envelope approximations, with reference to a normally dispersive medium or to vacuum, the electromagnetic field is given as a continuous quantum superposition of non-dispersive and non-diffracting wave-packets (namely X-waves). Entangled states as pairs of elementary excitations traveling at (approximately) the same velocity are found in optical parametric amplification.
The Feynman path integral formulation of non-dispersive Airy wave packets and their applications to the heavy meson mass spectra and ultra-cold neutrons
We numerically study the single particle localization and delocalization phenomena of an initially localized wave packet in the kicked Harper model (KHM) and Harper model subjected to quasi-periodic perturbation composed of $M-$modes. Both models are localized in the monochromatically perturbed case $M=1$. KHM shows localization-delocalization transition (LDT) above $M\geq2$ as increase of the perturbation strength $\eps$. In contrast, in a time-continuous Harper model with the perturbation, it is confirmed that the localization persists for $M=2$ and the LDT occurs for $M\geq 3$. Furthermore,…
We study wave packet dynamics of a Bose condensate in a periodically shaken trap. Dichotomy, that is, dynamic splitting of the condensate, and dynamic stabilization are analyzed in analogy with similar phenomena in the domain of atoms in strong laser fields.
Quantum mechanics asserts that a wave packet must inevitably spread as time progresses since the dispersion relation for the quantum waves is assumed to be quadratic in the momentum k. However, this assumption does not consider the standard frequency Doppler shift formula of Galilean relativity. In this article a non-dispersive wave packet is constructed by appropriately considering the transformation rules between the laboratory and the (particle's) rest inertial reference frames.
Much having learned about Floquet dynamics of pseudospin-$1/2$ system namely, graphene, we here address the stroboscopic properties of a periodically kicked {three-band fermionic system such as $α$-T$_3$ lattice. This particular model provides an interpolation between graphene and dice lattice via the continuous tuning of the parameter $α$ from 0 to 1.} In the case of dice lattice ($α=1$), we reveal that one can, in principle, engineer various types of low energy dispersions around some specific points in the Brillouin zone by tuning the kicking parameter in the Hamiltonian along a particular …
The recurrence phenomena of an initially well localized wave packet are studied in periodically driven power-law potentials. For our general study we divide the potentials in two kinds, namely tightly binding and loosely binding potentials. In the presence of an external periodically modulating force, these potentials may exhibit classical and quantum chaos. The dynamics of a quantum wave packet in the modulated potentials displays recurrences at various time scales. We develop general analytical relations for these times and discuss their parametric dependence.
Particles in space periodic potentials constitute standard models for investigation of crystalline phenomena in solid state physics. Time periodicity of periodically driven systems is a close analogue of space periodicity of solid state crystals. There is an intriguing question if solid state phenomena can be observed in the time domain. Here we show that wave-packets localized on resonant classical trajectories of periodically driven systems are ideal elements to realize Anderson localization or Mott insulator phase in the time domain. Uniform superpositions of the wave-packets form stationar…
In this letter, we provide evidence for a classical sector of states in the Hilbert space of Finite Quantum Mechanics (FQM). We construct a subset of states whose the minimum bound of position -momentum uncertainty (equivalent to an effective $\hbar$) vanishes. The classical regime, contrary to standard Quantum Mechanical Systems of particles and fields, but also of strings and branes appears in short distances of the order of the lattice spacing. {}For linear quantum maps of long periods, we observe that time evolution leads to fast decorrelation of the wave packets, phenomenon similar to the…
It is shown that under certain dynamical conditions a material wave packet displays coherent, non-dispersive accelerated evolution in gravitational field over a modulated atomic mirror. The phenomenon takes place as a consequence of simultaneous presence of the dynamical localization and the coherent Fermi acceleration for the same modulation amplitude. It is purely a quantum mechanical effect as the windows of modulation strengths supporting dynamical localization and Fermi acceleration overlap for larger effective Plank constant. Present day experimental techniques make it feasible to realiz…
With propagating through a dispersive medium, the temporal-spectral profile of laser pulses should be inevitably modified. Although such dispersion effect has been well studied in classical optics, its effect on a single-photon wave-packet, i.e., the matter wave of a single-photon, has not yet been entirely revealed. In this paper, we investigate the effect of dispersion on indistinguishability of single-photon wave-packets through the Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) interference. By dispersively manipulating two indistinguishable single-photon wave-packets before interfering with each other, we observe …
We calculate the quantum revival time for a wave-packet initially well localized in a one-dimensional potential in the presence of an external periodic modulating field. The dependence of the revival time on various parameters of the driven system is shown analytically. As an example of application of our approach, we compare the analytically obtained values of the revival time for various modulation strengths with the numerically computed ones in the case of a driven gravitational cavity. We show that they are in very good agreement.
In this work, we experimentally manipulate the spectrum and phase of a biphoton wave packet in a two-dimensional frequency space. The spectrum is shaped by adjusting the temperature of the crystal, and the phase is controlled by tilting the dispersive glass plate. The manipulating effects are confirmed by measuring the two-photon spectral intensity (TSI) and the Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) interference patterns. Unlike the previous independent manipulation schemes, here we perform joint manipulation on the biphoton spectrum. The technique in this work paves the way for arbitrary shaping of a multi-ph…
We consider the dynamics of a particle confined in a double well potential which is subjected to a periodic drive. In the case of deep and well separated wells, we find that by adjusting the parameters of the drive we can generate, to a very good approximation, a volcano potential. The quantum dynamics in this volcano potential is studied by a variation of what can be called a generalized Ehrenfest's theorem. We find that the coupling of the mean position and the width of the wave packet in this dynamics causes the particle to escape from the central well in accordance with the fact that the v…
We show that a conspicuous wave packet of ultracold noninteracting Bosonic atoms emerges in a 1-dimensional parabolic optical lattice as in the setup of the Aarhus experiment [P. L. Pedersen ${\it et}$ ${\it al.}$, Phys. Rev. A ${\bf 88}$, 023620 (2013)], given the lattice height is harmonically modulated with a particular amplitude at a resonant frequency. We show that this wave packet, coined "${\it 4bandPWP}$" here, executes stable time-wise periodic motion for infinitely long time. We apply the Floquet theory to analyze the parameter dependence of ${\it 4bandPWP}$ in detail. Our analysis s…
The discovery of Berry and Balazs in 1979 that the free-particle Schrödinger equation allows a non-dispersive and accelerating Airy-packet solution has taken the folklore of quantum mechanics by surprise. Over the years, this intriguing class of wave packets has sparked enormous theoretical and experimental activities in related areas of optics and atom physics. Within the Bohmian mechanics framework, we present new features of Airy wave packet solutions to Schrödinger equation with time-dependent quadratic potentials. In particular, we provide some insights to the problem by calculating the c…
Recurrence behavior of wave packets in coupled higher dimensional systems and periodically driven systems is analyzed, which takes place in the realm of higher coupling/modulation strength. We analyze the wave packet dynamics close to nonlinear resonances developed in the systems and provide the analytical understanding of recurrence times. We apply these analytical results to investigate the recurrence times of matter waves in optical lattice in the presence of external periodic forcing. The obtained analytical results can experimentally be observed using currently available experimental setup…
Electrons in a lattice exhibit time-periodic motion, known as Bloch oscillation, when subject to an additional static electric field. Here we show that a corresponding dynamics can occur upon replacing the spatially periodic potential by a time-periodic driving: Floquet oscillations of charge carriers in a spatially homogeneous system. The time lattice of the driving gives rise to Floquet bands that take on the role of the usual Bloch bands. For two different drivings (harmonic driving and periodic kicking through pulses) of systems with linear dispersion we demonstrate the existence of such o…
We report on the observation of the coherent enhancement of the return probability ("enhanced return to the origin" , ERO) in a periodically kicked cold-atom gas. By submitting an atomic wave packet to a pulsed, periodically shifted laser standing wave, we induce an oscillation of ERO in time and explain it in terms of a periodic, reversible dephasing in the weak-localization interference sequences responsible for ERO. Monitoring the temporal decay of ERO, we exploit its quantum coherent nature to quantify the decoherence rate of the atomic system.
We analyze the performance of quantum ratchets by considering the dynamics of an initially localized wave packet loaded into a flashing periodic potential. The directed center-of-mass motion can be initiated by the uniform modulation of the potential height, provided that the modulation protocol breaks all relevant time- and spatial reflection symmetries. A poor performance of quantum ratchet transport is characterized by a slow net motion and a fast diffusive spreading of the wave packet, while the desirable optimal performance is the contrary. By invoking a quantum analog of the classical Pé…
We show that in order to guide waves, it is sufficient to periodically truncate their edges. The modes supported by this type of wave guide propagate freely between the slits, and the propagation pattern repeats itself. We experimentally demonstrate this general wave phenomenon for two types of waves: (i) plasmonic waves propagating on a metal-air interface that are periodically blocked by nanometric metallic walls, and (ii) surface gravity water waves whose evolution is recorded, the packet is truncated, and generated again to show repeated patterns. This guiding concept is applicable for a w…
We have identified a novel phase stability mechanism from the intracavity field-induced self-organization of a fast-moving molecular beam into travelling molecular packets in the bad cavity regime, which is then used to decelerate the molecular packets by feedback-controlled time-varying laser pumps to the cavity. We first applied the linear stability analysis to derive an expression for this self-organization in the adiabatic limit and show that the self-organization of the beam leads to the formation of travelling molecular packets, which in turn function as a dynamic Bragg grating, thus mod…
It is demonstrated that in contrast to the well-known case with a quantum particle moving freely in a real line, the wave packets corresponding to the coherent states for a free quantum particle on a circle do not spread but develop periodically in time. The discontinuous changes during the course of time in the phase representing the position of a particle can be interpreted as the quantum jumps on a circle.
Macroscopic quantum optical effects (Schrodinger cat states, squeezing, collapse and revival) for light beams propagating in an inhomogeneous linear medium are demonstrated using exact analytical solutions of wave equation. It is shown that the coherent superposition of macroscopically distinguishable states is generated via mode interference from an initial off-axis single wave-packet. Squeezed cat states with a fidelity > 99% arise periodically and disappear rapidly within limited intervals of a propagation distance. Collapse and revival of wave packets at long-term non-paraxial evolution du…
We analytically study the effects of periodically alternating magnetic fields on the dynamics of a tight-binding ring. It is shown that an arbitrary quantum state can be frozen coherently at will by the very frequent square-wave field as well as the monochromatic-wave field when the corresponding optimal amplitudes are taken. Numerical simulations show that the average fidelity depends on not only the system parameters, but also the features of the quantum state. Moreover, taking the initial zero-momentum Gaussian wave packets as examples, we show the dependence of the threshold frequency on t…
We study theoretically the interaction between two photons in a nonlinear cavity. The photons are loaded into the cavity via a method we propose here, in which the input/output coupling of the cavity is effectively controlled via a tunable coupling to a second cavity mode that is itself strongly output-coupled. Incoming photon wave packets can be loaded into the cavity with high fidelity when the timescale of the control is smaller than the duration of the wave packets. Dynamically coupled cavities can be used to avoid limitations in the photon-photon interaction time set by the delay-bandwidt…
Quasi-periodically driven quantum parametric oscillators have been the subject of several recent investigations. Here we show that for such oscillators, the instability zones of the mean position and variance (alternatively the mean energy) for a time developing wave packet are identical for the strongest resonance in the three-dimensional parameter space of the quasi-periodic modulation as it is for the two-dimensional parameter space of the periodic modulations.
We study if periodic driving of a model with a quasiperiodic potential can generate interesting Floquet phases which have no counterparts in the static model. Specifically, we consider the Aubry-André model which is a one-dimensional time-independent model with an on-site quasiperiodic potential $V_0$ and a nearest-neighbor hopping amplitude which is taken to have a staggered form. We add a uniform hopping amplitude which varies periodically in time with a frequency $ω$. Unlike the static Aubry-André model which has a simple phase diagram with only two phases (only extended or only localized s…
