By defining information entropy in terms of probabilities densities $|Ψ|^2$ ($Ψ$ is a wave function in the coordinate representation) it is explicitly shown how a loss of quantum information occurs in a transition from a quantum to a quasi-classical regime.
Recent theoretical and experimental studies in quantum heat engines show that, in the quasi-static regime, it is possible to have higher efficiency than the limit imposed by Carnot, provided that engineered reservoirs are used. The quasi-static regime, however, is a strong limitation to the operation of heat engines, since infinitely long time is required to complete a cycle. In this paper we propose a two-level model as the working substance to perform a quantum Otto heat engine surrounded by a cold thermal reservoir and a squeezed hot thermal reservoir. Taking advantage of this model we show…
The success of quantum technologies is intimately connected to the possibility of using them in real-world applications. To this aim, we study the sensing capabilities of quantum SU(1,1) interferometers in the single-photon-pair regime and in the presence of losses, a situation highly relevant to practical realistic measurements of extremely photosensitive materials. We show that coincidence measurement can be exploited to partially mitigate the effect of losses inside the interferometer. Finally, we find that quantum SU(1,1) interferometers are capable of outperforming classical SU(2) systems…
We provide a comprehensive study of ultra-cold atom diffraction by an optical lattice. We focus on an intermediate regime between the Raman-Nath and the Bragg regimes, the so-called quasi-Bragg regime. The experimental results are in a good agreement with a full numerical integration of the Schrödinger equation. We investigate the long pulse regime limited by a strong velocity selection and the short pulse regime limited by non-adiabatic losses. For each of these regimes, we estimate the multi-port features of the Bragg interferometers. Finally, we discuss the best compromise between these two…
The standard approach to deriving fluctuation theorems fails to capture the effect of quantum correlation and coherence in the initial state of the system. Here we overcome this difficulty and derive heat exchange fluctuation theorem in the full quantum regime by showing that the energy exchange between two locally thermal states in the presence of initial quantum correlations is faithfully captured by a quasiprobability distribution. Its negativities, being associated with proofs of contextuality, are proxys of non-classicality. We discuss the thermodynamic interpretation of negative probabil…
It is demonstrated that measurements of positions of atoms scattered from a quasi-condensate in a Raman process provide information on the temperature of the parent cloud. In particular, the widths of the density and second order correlation functions are sensitive to the phase fluctuations induced by non-zero temperature of the quasi-condensate. It is also shown how these widths evolve during expansion of the cloud of scattered atoms. These results are useful for planning future Raman scattering experiments and indicate the degree of spatial resolution of atom-position measurements necessary …
We present a quantized quasinormal approach to rigorously describe coupled lossy resonators, and quantify the quantum coupling parameters as a function of distance between the resonators. We also make a direct connection between classical and quantum quasinormal modes parameters and theories, offering new and unique insights into coupled open cavity resonators. We present detailed calculations for coupled microdisk resonators and show striking interference effects that depend on the phase of the quasinormal modes, an effect that is also significant for high quality factor modes. Our results de…

Processes that break molecular bonds are typically observed with molecules occupying a mixture of quantum states and successfully described with quasiclassical models, while a few studies have explored the distinctly quantum mechanical low-energy regime. Here we use photodissociation of diatomic strontium molecules to demonstrate the crossover from the ultracold, quantum regime where the photofragment angular distributions strongly depend on the kinetic energy, to the energy-independent quasiclassical regime. Using time-of-flight velocity map imaging for photodissociation channels with millike…
A continuous-wave (CW) broadband high-level optical quadrature squeezer is essential for high-speed large-scale fault-tolerant quantum computing on a time-domain-multiplexed continuous-variable optical cluster state. CW THz-bandwidth squeezed light can be obtained with a waveguide optical parametric amplifier (OPA); however, the squeezing level have been insufficient for applications of fault-tolerant quantum computation because of degradation of the squeezing level due to their optical losses caused by the structural perturbation and pump-induced phenomena. Here, by using mechanical polishing…
In the paper a model of a single-atom laser with incoherent pumping is theoretically investigated. In the stationary case, a linear homogeneous differential equation for the phase-averaged Hussimi Q-function is derived from the equation for the density operator of the system. In the regime when the coupling of the field with an atom is many times stronger than the coupling of the field with the reservoir providing its decay, an asymptotic solution of this equation is found. This solution makes it possible to describe some statistical features of a single-atom laser, in particular the weak sub-…
Frequent observation of a quantum system leads to quantum Zeno physics, where the system evolution is constrained to states commensurate with the measurement outcome. We show that, more generally, the system can evolve between such states through higher-order virtual processes that pass through states outside the measurement subspace. We derive effective Hamiltonians to describe this evolution, and the dependence on the time between measurements. We demonstrate application of this phenomena to prototypical quantum many-body system examples, spin chains and atoms in optical lattices, where it f…
We study the dynamics of Bogoliubov excitations of a Bose-Einstein condensate in the quasiperiodic kicked rotor. In the weakly interacting regime, the condensate is stable and both the condensate and the excitations undergo a phase transition from a quasilocalized to a diffusive regime. The corresponding critical exponents are identical for the condensate and the excitations, and compare very well with the value $ν\approx1.6$ for non-interacting particles.
We examine the effect of adding PT-symmetric gain and loss terms to quasi 1D lattices (ribbons) that possess flat bands. We focus on three representative cases: (a) The Lieb ribbon, (b) The kagome ribbon, and (c) The stub Ribbon. In general we find that the effect on the flat band depends strongly on the geometrical details of the lattice being examined. One interesting and novel result that emerge from an analytical calculation of the band structure of the Lieb ribbon including gain and loss, is that its flat band survives the addition of PT-symmetry for any amount of gain and loss, while for…
We have fabricated superconducting microwave resonators in a lumped element geometry using single crystal silicon dielectric parallel plate capacitors with C >2 pF. Aluminum devices with resonant frequencies between 4.0 and 6.5 GHz exhibited an average internal quality factor Q_i of 2 x 10^5 in the single photon excitation regime at T = 20 mK. Attributing all the observed loss to the capacitive element, our measurements correspond to a loss tangent of intrinsic silicon of 5 x 10^-6. This level of loss is an order of magnitude lower than is currently observed in structures incorporating amorpho…
At ultralow energies, atoms and molecules undergo collisions and reactions that are best described in terms of quantum mechanical wave functions. In contrast, at higher energies these processes can be understood quasiclassically. Here, we investigate the crossover from the quantum mechanical to the quasiclassical regime both experimentally and theoretically for photodissociation of ultracold diatomic strontium molecules. This basic reaction is carried out with a full control of quantum states for the molecules and their photofragments. The photofragment angular distributions are imaged, and ca…
