A Wronskian determinant approach is suggested to study the energy and the wave function for one-dimensional Schrodinger equation. An integral equation and the corresponding Green's function are constructed. As an example, we employed this approach to study the problem of double-well potential with strong coupling. A series expansion of ground state energy up to the second order approximation of iterative procedure is given.
We compare the Wronskian method (WM) and the Schrödinger eigenvalue march or canonical function method (SEM--CFM) for the calculation of the energies and eigenfunctions of the Schrödinger equation. The Wronskians between linearly independent solutions of the Schrödinger equation provide a rigorous basis for some of the assumptions of the SEM-CFM, like, for example, the concept of "saturation". We compare the performance of both approaches on a simple one-dimensional model and suggest that taking into account the asymptotic behaviour of the wavefunction (as is already done in the WM) may make t…
We show that Wronskians between properly chosen linearly independent solutions of the Schrödinger equation greatly facilitate the study of quantum scattering in one dimension. They enable one to obtain the necessary relationships between the coefficients that determine the asymptotic behavior of the wavefunction. As illustrative examples we calculate the transmission probability for the penetration of a Gaussian barrier and the scattering resonances for a Gaussian well.
We construct a variety of new exactly-solvable quantum systems, the potentials of which are given in terms of Lambert-W functions. In particular, we generate Schrödinger models with energy-dependent potentials, conventional Schrödinger models using the supersymmetry formalism, and two-dimensional Dirac systems. In addition, we derive Wronskian integral formulas for Lambert-W functions.
We review an exact analytical resolution method for general one-dimensional (1D) quantal anharmonic oscillators: stationary Schrödinger equations with polynomial potentials. It is an exact form of WKB treatment involving spectral (usual) vs "classical" (newer) zeta-regularisations in parallel. The central results are a set of Bohr--Sommerfeld-like but exact quantisation conditions, directly drawn from Wronskian identities, and appearing to extend Bethe-Ansatz formulae of integrable systems. Such exact quantisation conditions do not just select the eigenvalues; some evaluate the spectral determ…
We propose a scheme to prepare optical Schrödinger-cat states in a traveling wave setting. Two states are similarly prepared via the self-Kerr effect and after mixing them, one mode is measured by homodyne detection. In the other mode a superposition of coherent states is conditionally prepared. The advantage of the scheme is that assuming a small Kerr effect one can prepare with high probability one from a set of Schrödinger-cat states. The measured value of the quadrature provides the information, which state from the set is actually prepared.
We consider a weakly interacting coherently coupled Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential. We show by means of stochastic simulations that the system could possibly be driven to an entangled macroscopic superposition state or a Schrödinger cat state by means of a continuous quantum measurement process.
For the stationary one-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation (or Gross-Pitaevskii equation) nonlinear resonant transmission through a finite number of equidistant identical barriers is studied using a (semi-) analytical approach. In addition to the occurrence of bistable transmission peaks known from nonlinear resonant transmission through a single quantum well (respectively a double barrier) complicated (looped) structures are observed in the transmission coefficient which can be identified as the result of symmetry breaking similar to the emergence of self-trapping states in double well…
We report a solution of the one-dimensional Schrodinger equation with a hyperbolic double-well confining potential via a transformation to the so-called confluent Heun equation. We discuss the requirements on the parameters of the system in which a reduction to Heun polynomials is possible, representing the wavefunctions of bound states.
We introduce two potentials explicitly given by the Lambert-W function for which the exact solution of the one-dimensional stationary Schrödinger equation is written through the first derivative of a double-confluent Heun function. One of these potentials is a singular potential that behaves as the inverse square root in the vicinity of the origin and vanishes exponentially at the infinity. The exact solution of the Schrödinger equation for this potential is given through fundamental solutions each of which presents an irreducible linear combination of two confluent hypergeometric functions. S…
The stationary 1D Schrödinger equation with a polynomial potential $V(q)$ of degree N is reduced to a system of exact quantization conditions of Bohr-Sommerfeld form. They arise from bilinear (Wronskian) functional relations pairing spectral determinants of (N+2) generically distinct operators, all the transforms of one quantum Hamiltonian under a cyclic group of complex scalings. The determinants' zeros define (N+2) semi-infinite chains of points in the complex spectral plane, and they encode the original quantum problem. Each chain can now be described by an exact quantization condition whic…
The Schrödinger equation for the four-dimensional double singular oscillator is separable in Eulerian, doble polar and spheroidal coordinates in ${\rm I R}^4$. It is shown that the coefficients for the expansion of double polar basis in terms of the Eulerian basis can be expressed through the Clebsch-Gordan coefficients of the group SU(2) analytically continued to real values of their arguments. The coefficients for the expansions of the spheroidal basis in terms of the Eulerian and double polar bases are proved to satisfy three-term recursion relations.
We obtain eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Schrödinger equation with a hyperbolic double-well potential. We consider exact polynomial solutions for some particular values of the potential-strength parameter and also numerical energies for arbitrary values of this model parameter. We test the numerical method by means of a suitable exact asymptotic expression for the eigenvalues and also calculate critical values of the strength parameter that are related to the number of bound states supported by the potential.
The studied model describes a particle that obeys a one-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation in the potential of a double-well. Transitions between the two lowest self-trapped states of this system under the influence of the external time-dependent perturbation are studied in the two-mode approximation. If the perturbation dependence on time is harmonic with the frequency $ω$, then transitions between the states become possible if the amplitude of the perturbation $F$ exceeds some threshold value $F_c(ω)$; above the threshold motion of the system becomes chaotic. If the perturbation is a…
We formulate the Schrödinger equation as the equation of motion of a small external influence which serves as the initial boundary condition of a physical system in classical laboratory space. The Hilbert space of possible external influences for a given physical system is then equivalent to the Hilbert space of a quantum system without spin. We discuss the double-slit experiment in the context of this approach and show that wave-particle dualism reduces to the choice of a basis in the geometrical construction of the Hilbert space of small external influences.
By employing the Pekeris approximation, the D-dimensional Schrödinger equation is solved for the nuclear deformed Woods-Saxon potential plus double ring-shaped potential within the framework of the Asymptotic Iteration Method (AIM). The energy eingenvalues are given in a closed form and the corresponding normalized eigenfunctions are obtained in terms of hypergeometric functions. Our general results reproduce many predictions obtained in the literature, using the Nikiforov-Uvarov method (NU) and the Improved Quantization Rule approach, particulary those derived by considering Woods-Saxon poten…
In this paper, we apply the full new method of quantum theory to study the double-slit diffraction of ${C_{60}}$ molecules. We calculate the double-slit wave functions of ${C_{60}}$ molecules by Schrödinger equation, and calculate the diffraction wave function behind the slits with the Feynman path integral quantum theory, and then give the relation between the diffraction intensity of double-slit and diffraction pattern position. We compare the calculation results with two different double-slit diffraction experiments. When the decoherence effects are considered, the calculation results are i…
This paper considers a main particle and an incident particle classical mechanics elastic collision preserving energy and momentum while ignoring the angular momentum, spin or other particle characteristics. The main result of the paper shows that the colliding two particle classical Hamiltonian energy can be represented in four weighted individual particle in symmetric and anti-symmetric (osmotic) terms similar to the quadratic Nelson measure used in the derivation of the Schrodinger wave function. Following Nelson, if the second particle behavior can be captured in a potential and the ingoin…
The full set of resonant states in double and triple quantum well/barrier structures is investigated. This includes bound, anti-bound and normal resonant states which are all eigensolutions of Schrodinger's equation with generalized outgoing wave boundary conditions. The transformation of resonant states and their transitions between different subgroups as well as the role of each subgroup in observables, such as the quantum transmission, is analyzed. The quantum well potentials are modeled by Dirac delta functions; therefore, as part of this study, the well-known problem of bound states in de…
It is predicted by Schrodinger's equation that entanglement will occur in the interaction between detector and particle. We provide an analysis of the entanglement using the Gurvitz model of double-dot and detector. New results on entangled doubled-dots are provided as well as implications on Quantum Information processing.
The time-independent nonlinear Schrödinger equation is solved for two attractive delta-function shaped potential wells where an imaginary loss term is added in one well, and a gain term of the same size but with opposite sign in the other. We show that for vanishing nonlinearity the model captures all the features known from studies of PT symmetric optical wave guides, e.g., the coalescence of modes in an exceptional point at a critical value of the loss/gain parameter, and the breaking of PT symmetry beyond. With the nonlinearity present, the equation is a model for a Bose-Einstein condensate…
We study the quantum behaviour of a particle moving in a one-dimensional double well potential. This double well is obtained by gluing together, at the origin, two shifted harmonic oscillator potentials. The Schrödinger equation is exactly solvable. The requirement that discontinuities, in the wavefunction and its first derivative, are absent at the origin, leads to the quantisation of the energy eigenvalues. We also show that oscillations in time take place between two nearby single harmonic oscillator ground states. Finally, the double well potential is augmented by a Dirac delta-function po…
We comment on the paper "Feynman Effective Classical Potential in the Schrodinger Formulation"[Phys. Rev. Lett. 81, 3303 (1998)]. We show that the results in this paper about the time evolution of a wave packet in a double well potential can be properly explained by resorting to a variational principle for the effective action. A way to improve on these results is also discussed.
In this paper, we present the exact solution of one dimensional Schrödinger equation for Wood-Saxon plus Rosen-Morse plus symmetrical double well potential via Nikiforov-Uvarov mathematical method. The eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of this potential are obtained. The energy equations and the corresponding wave function for special cases of this potential are briefly discussed. The PT-symmetry and Hermiticity for this potential are also considered.
We present a class of confining potentials which allow one to reduce the one-dimensional Schroodinger equation to a named equation of mathematical physics, namely either Bessel's or Whittaker's differential equation. In all cases, we provide closed form expressions for both the symmetric and antisymmetric wavefunction solutions, each along with an associated transcendental equation for allowed eigenvalues. The class of potentials considered contains an example of both cusp-like single wells and a double-well.
In this paper we propose a deterministic and realistic quantum mechanics interpretation which may correspond to Louis de Broglie's "double solution theory". Louis de Broglie considers two solutions to the Schrödinger equation, a singular and physical wave u representing the particle (soliton wave) and a regular wave representing probability (statistical wave). We return to the idea of two solutions, but in the form of an interpretation of the wave function based on two different preparations of the quantum system. We demonstrate the necessity of this double interpretation when the particles ar…
The scattering of wave packets from a single slit and a double slit with the Schrödinger equation, is studied numerically and theoretically. The phenomenon of diffraction of wave packets in space and time in the backward region, previously found for barriers and wells, is encountered here also. A new phenomenon of forward diffraction that occurs only for packets thiner than the slit, or slits, is calculated numerically as well as, in a theoretical approximation to the problem. This diffraction occurs at the opposite end of the usual diffraction phenomena with monochromatic waves.
