In this paper, we give two very simple schemes to produce two kinds of W states, one kind is path W state with one photon and the other is multiphoton photon polarization W state. These schemes just need a common commercial multiport fiber coupler and single photon sources, they are feasible by current technologies.
An arbitrary lossless transformation in high-dimensional quantum space can be decomposed into elementary operations which are easy to implement, and an effective decomposition algorithm is important for constructing high-dimensional systems. Here, we present two optimized architectures to effectively realize an arbitrary unitary transformation by using the photonic path and polarization based on the existing decomposition algorithm. In the first architecture, the number of required interferometers is reduced by half compared with previous works. In the second architecture, by using the high-di…
Most quantum systems that are used for generating entanglement and for practical applications are not isolated from the environment, and are hence susceptible to noise. Entanglement in more than one degree of freedom between two systems, known as hyperentanglement, is known to have certain advantages, including robustness against noise over conventional entangled states. Quantum illumination, imaging and communication schemes that involve sending one photon from a pair of entangled photons and retaining the other photon usually involve exposing only the signal photon to environmental noise. Th…
Encoding many qubits in different degrees of freedom (DOFs) of single photons is one of the routes towards enlarging the Hilbert space spanned by a photonic quantum state. Hyperentangled photon states (i.e. states showing entanglement in multiple DOFs) have demonstrated significant implications for both fundamental physics tests and quantum communication and computation. Increasing the number of qubits of photonic experiments requires miniaturization and integration of the basic elements and functions to guarantee the set-up stability. This motivates the development of technologies allowing th…
The so-called quantum Cheshire Cat is a scenario where a photon, identified with a cat, and a component of its polarization, identified with the grin of that cat, are separated. We observe that the same techniques can be used to separate two orthogonal components of polarization of a photon, on an average. We identify these polarization components of the photon as the grin and snarl of the cat for ease of comprehension. A gedanken experiment is presented in which we simultaneously tune the input polarizations of the photon in the two arms of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. It is noted that for …
Multiple-degrees-of-freedom free-space communication combining polarization and high-order spatial modes promises high-capacity communication channel. While high-order spatial modes have been widely exploited for dense coding and high-dimensional quantum information processing, the properties of polarization preservation of high-order spatial beams propagating in turbulent atmosphere have not been comprehensively investigated yet. Here we focus on the properties of polarization preservation of partially coherent Hermite-Gaussian beams propagating along different atmospheric turbulence paths. T…
The degree of freedom of orbital angular momentum (OAM) is an important resource in high-dimensional quantum information processing, as the quantum number of OAM can be infinite. The Dove prism (DP) is a most common tool to manipulate the OAM light, such as in interferometers. However, the Dove prism does not preserve the polarization of the photon states and decreases the sorting fidelity of the interferometer. In this work, we analyze the polarization-dependent effect of the DP on single-path Sagnac interferometers. The results are instructive to quantum information processing with OAM light…
The development and wide application of quantum technologies highly depend on the capacity of the communication channels distributing entanglement. Space-division multiplexing (SDM) enhanced channel capacities in classical telecommunication and bears the potential to transfer the idea to quantum communication using current infrastructure. Here, we demonstrate an SDM of polarization-entangled photons over a 411m long 19-core multicore fiber distributing polarization-entangled photon pairs through up to 12 channels simultaneously. The quality of the multiplexed transfer is evidenced by high pola…
We present a worldline method for the calculation of Casimir energies for scalar fields coupled to magnetodielectric media. The scalar model we consider may be applied in arbitrary geometries, and it corresponds exactly to one polarization of the electromagnetic field in planar layered media. Starting from the field theory for electromagnetism, we work with the two decoupled polarizations in planar media and develop worldline path integrals, which represent the two polarizations separately, for computing both Casimir and Casimir-Polder potentials. We then show analytically that the path integr…
A single photon can be made to entangle simultaneously in its different internal degrees of freedom (DoF) -- polarization, orbital angular momentum (OAM), and frequency -- as well as in its external DoF -- path. Such entanglement in multiple DoF is known as hyperentanglement and provide additional advantage for quantum information processing. We propose a passive optical setup using $q$-plates and polarization beamsplitters to hyperentangle an incoming single photon in polarization, OAM, and path DoF. By mapping polarization DoF to a two-dimensional coin state, and path and OAM DoF to two spat…
Wave-particle duality is certainly one of the most curious concepts of contemporary physics, which ascribes mutually exclusive behaviors to quantum systems that cannot be observed simultaneously. In the context of two-path interferometers, these two behaviors are usually described in terms of the visibility of interference fringes and the path distinguishability. Here, we use quantum information-theoretic tools to derive quantifiers of these two properties, which account for the combined influence of path probability and polarization, and demonstrate that they satisfy a complementarity relatio…
We consider how vectorial aspects (polarization) of light propagation can be implemented, and its origin, within a Feynman path integral approach. A key part of this scheme is in generalising the standard optical path length integral from a scalar to a matrix quantity. Reparametrization invariance along the rays allows a covariant formulation where propagation can take place along a general curve. A general gradient index background is used to demonstrate the scheme. This affords a description of classical imaging optics when the polarization aspects may be varying rapidly and cannot be neglec…
We here put forward a new path-integral over Hilbert space and show that it reproduces quantum mechanics exactly. This approach works by optimizing the generating functional under a variation of the final state; it is hence an example of a future-input dependent theory. The benefit of this method is that entangled states appear in the paths directly, and the generating functional can be modified to also include wave-function collapse.
As an alternative but unified and more fundamental description for quantum physics, Feynman path integrals generalize the classical action principle to a probabilistic perspective, under which the physical observables' estimation translates into a weighted sum over all possible paths. The underlying difficulty is to tackle the whole path manifold from finite samples that can effectively represent the Feynman propagator dictated probability distribution. Modern generative models in machine learning can handle learning and representing probability distribution with high computational efficiency.…
We report two schemes to generate perfect anisotropy in the photoelectron angular distribution of a randomly oriented ensemble of polyatomic molecules. In order to exert full control over the anisotropy of photoelectron emission, we exploit interferences between single-photon pathways and a manifold of resonantly-enhanced two-photon pathways. These are shown to outperform non-sequential $(ω,2ω)$ bichromatic phase control for the example of CHFClBr molecules. We are able to optimize pulses that yield anisotropic photoelectron emission thanks to a very efficient calculation of photoelectron mome…
The modular spaces are a family of polarizations of the Hilbert space that are based on Aharonov's modular variables and carry a rich geometric structure. We construct here, step by step, a Feynman path integral for the quantum harmonic oscillator in a modular polarization. This modular path integral is endowed with novel features such as a new action, winding modes, and an Aharonov-Bohm phase. Its saddle points are sequences of superposition states and they carry a non-classical concept of locality in alignment with the understanding of quantum reference frames. The action found in the modula…
The earlier proposed Dynamics-Generating Approach (DGA) is reviewed and extended. Starting from an arbitrarily chosen group or semigroup which have structure similar to the structure of Galilei group, DGA allows one to construct phenomenological description of dynamics of the corresponding "elementary quantum object" (a particle or non-local object of special type). A class of Galilei-type semigroups, with semigroup of trajectories (parametrized paths) instead of translations, allows one to derive Feynman path integrals in the framework of DGA. The measure of path integrating (exponential of t…
The generating functional for scalar theories admits a representation which is dual with respect to the one introduced by Schwinger, interchanging the role of the free and interacting terms. It maps $\int V(δ_J)$ and $JΔJ$ to $δ_{ϕ_c}Δδ_{ϕ_c}$ and $\int V(ϕ_c)$, respectively, with $ϕ_c=\int JΔ$ and $Δ$ the Feynman propagator. Comparing the Schwinger representation with its dual version one gets a little known relation that we prove to be a particular case of a more general operatorial relation. We then derive a new representation of the generating functional $T[ϕ_c]=W[J]$ expressed in terms of…
