Quantum projection synthesis can be used for phase-probability-distribution measurement, optical-state truncation and preparation. The method relies on interfering optical lights, which is a major challenge in experiments performed by pulsed light sources. In the pulsed regime, the time frequency overlap of the interfering lights plays a crucial role on the efficiency of the method when they have different mode structures. In this paper, the pulsed mode projection synthesis is developed, the mode structure of interfering lights are characterized and the effect of this overlap (or mode match) on the fidelity of optical-state truncation and preparation is investigated. By introducing the positive-operator-valued measure (POVM) for the detection events in the scheme, the effect of mode mismatch between the photon-counting detectors and the incident lights are also presented.

Generation of arbitrary superposition of vacuum and one-photon states using quantum scissors device (QSD) is studied. The device allows the preparation of states by truncating an input coherent light. Optimum values of the intensity of the coherent light for the generation of any desired state using the experimentally feasible QSD scheme are found.
We discuss experimental effects in the implementation of a recent scheme for performing bus mediated entangling operations between qubits. Here a bus mode, a strong coherent state, successively undergoes weak Kerr-type non-linear interactions with qubits. A quadrature measurement on the bus then projects the qubits into an entangled state. This approach has the benefit that entangling gates are non-destructive, may be performed non-locally, and there is no need for efficient single photon detection. In this paper we examine practical issues affecting its experimental implementation. In particu…
Application of current and near-term quantum hardware to the electronic structure problem is highly limited by qubit counts, coherence times, and gate fidelities. To address these restrictions within the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) framework, many recent contributions have suggested dressing the electronic Hamiltonian to include a part of electron correlation, leaving the rest to be accounted by VQE state preparation. We present a new dressing scheme that combines preservation of the Hamiltonian hermiticity and an exact quadratic truncation of the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff expansion. …
The interest in quantum-optical states confined in finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces has recently been stimulated by the progress in quantum computing, quantum-optical state preparation, and measurement techniques, in particular, by the development of the discrete quantum-state tomography. In the first part of our review we present two essentially different approaches to define harmonic oscillator states in the finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces. One of them is related to the truncation scheme of Pegg, Phillips and Barnett [Phys. Rev. Lett. 81, 1604 (1998)] -- the so-called quantum scissors dev…
The performance of key tasks in quantum technology, such as accurate state preparation, can be maximized by utilizing external controls and deriving their shape with optimal control theory. For non-pure target states, the performance measure needs to match both angle and length of the generalized Bloch vector. We introduce a measure based on this simple geometric picture that separates angle and length mismatch into individual terms and apply the ensuing optimization framework to maximize squeezing of an optomechanical oscillator at finite temperature. Our results show that shaping the cavity …
A cat state is a superposition of macroscopically distinct states. In quantum optics one such type of state is a superposition of distinct coherent states. Recently, a protocol has been proposed for preparing large optical cat states from a resource of smaller ones. We consider the effects of mode-mismatch and loss in the preparation of large cat states using this protocol with a view to understand experimental limitations. (This paper is written in an experimental rapid communication format).
We examine conditions under which an open quantum system composed of a driven degenerated parametric oscillator cavity and a driven two-level atom coupled to a waveguide could decay to a pure dark state rather than the expected mixed state. The calculations are carried out analytically in a low dimensional Hilbert space truncated at the double-excitation states of the combined system. The validity of the truncation is confirmed by the exact numerical analysis. It is found that one way to produce the pure state is to chirally couple the cavity and the atom to the waveguide. Another way to produ…
Electromagnetic waves are ideal candidates for transmitting information in a quantum network as they can be routed rapidly and efficiently between locations using optical fibers or microwave cables. Yet linking quantum-enabled devices with cables has proved difficult because most cavity or circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED) systems used in quantum information processing can only absorb and emit signals with a specific frequency and temporal envelope. Here we show that the temporal and spectral content of microwave-frequency electromagnetic signals can be arbitrarily manipulated with a flex…
Conformal truncation is a powerful numerical method for solving generic strongly-coupled quantum field theories based on purely field-theoretic technics without introducing lattice regularization. We discuss possible speedups for performing those computations using quantum devices, with the help of near-term and future quantum algorithms. We show that this construction is very similar to quantum simulation problems appearing in quantum chemistry (which are widely investigated in quantum information science), and the renormalization group theory provides a field theory interpretation of conform…
Light beams with extraordinary spatial structures, such as the Airy beam (AB), the Bessel-Gaussian beam (BGB) and the Laguerre-Gaussian beam (LGB), are widely studied and applied in many optical scenarios. We report on preparation of light beams with controllable spatial structures through sum frequency generation (SFG) using two Gaussian pump beams in a quasi-phase matching (QPM) crystal. The spatial structures, including multi-ring-like BGB, donut-like LGB, and super-Gaussian-like beams, can be controlled periodically via crystal phase mismatching by tuning the pump frequency or crystal temp…

Most ions lack the fast, cycling transitions that are necessary for direct laser cooling. In most cases, they can still be cooled sympathetically through their Coulomb interaction with a second, coolable ion species confined in the same potential. If the charge-to-mass ratios of the two ion types are too mismatched, the cooling of certain motional degrees of freedom becomes difficult. This limits both the achievable fidelity of quantum gates and the spectroscopic accuracy. Here we introduce a novel algorithmic cooling protocol for transferring phonons from poorly- to efficiently-cooled modes. …
