The theory of noncommutative dynamical entropy and quantum symbolic dynamics for quantum dynamical systems is analised from the point of view of quantum information theory. Using a general quantum dynamical system as a communication channel one can define different classical capacities depending on the character of resources applied for encoding and decoding procedures and on the type of information sources. It is shown that for Bernoulli sources the entanglement-assisted classical capacity, which is the largest one, is bounded from above by the quantum dynamical entropy defined in terms of operational partitions of unity. Stronger results are proved for the particular class of quantum dynamical systems -- quantum Bernoulli shifts. Different classical capacities are exactly computed and the entanglement-assisted one is equal to the dynamical entropy in this case.
Landauer's erasure principle exposes an intrinsic relation between thermodynamics and information theory: the erasure of information stored in a system, S, requires an amount of work proportional to the entropy of that system. This entropy, H(S|O), depends on the information that a given observer, O, has about S, and the work necessary to erase a system may therefore vary for different observers. Here, we consider a general setting where the information held by the observer may be quantum-mechanical, and show that an amount of work proportional to H(S|O) is still sufficient to erase S. Since t…
We show that the conditional min-entropy Hmin(A|B) of a bipartite state rho_AB is directly related to the maximum achievable overlap with a maximally entangled state if only local actions on the B-part of rho_AB are allowed. In the special case where A is classical, this overlap corresponds to the probability of guessing A given B. In a similar vein, we connect the conditional max-entropy Hmax(A|B) to the maximum fidelity of rho_AB with a product state that is completely mixed on A. In the case where A is classical, this corresponds to the security of A when used as a secret key in the presenc…
We investigate a quantum dynamical entropy of one-dimesional quantum spin systems. We show that the dynamical entropy is bounded from above by a quantity which is related with group velocity determined by the interaction and mean entropy of the state.
We review the postulates of quantum mechanics that are needed to discuss the von Neumann's entropy. We introduce it as a generalization of Shannon's entropy and propose a simple game that makes easier understanding its physical meaning.
Quantum entanglement of pure states is usually quantified via the entanglement entropy, the von Neumann entropy of the reduced state. Entanglement entropy is closely related to entanglement distillation, a process for converting quantum states into singlets, which can then be used for various quantum technological tasks. The relation between entanglement entropy and entanglement distillation has been known only for the asymptotic setting, and the meaning of entanglement entropy in the single-copy regime has so far remained open. Here we close this gap by considering entanglement catalysis. We …
We examine the conjecture that entropy production in subsystems of a given system can be used as a dynamical criterion for quantum chaos in the latter. Numerical results are presented for finite dimensional spin systems as also for the quantum baker's map. Of especial importance is the power spectrum of the entropy production which gets progressively more and more broad-banded as the degree of correlation in the Hamiltonian matrix is made to decrease.
We study the relations between the averaged linear entropy production in periodically measured quantum systems and ergodic properties of their classical counterparts. Quantized linear automorphisms of the torus, both classically chaotic and regular ones, are used as examples. Numerical calculations show different entropy production regimes depending on the relation between the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy and the measurement entropy. The hypothesis of free independence relations between the dynamics and measurement proposed to explain the initial constant and maximal entropy production is tested n…
We investigate the dynamical information exchange between a two-state system and its environment which is measured by von Neumann entropy. It is found that in the underdamping regime, the entropy dynamics exhibits an extremely non-Markovian oscillation-hump feature, in which oscillations manifest quantum coherence and a hump of envelop demonstrates temporal memory of bath. It indicates that the process of entropy exchange is bidirectional. When the coupling strength increases a certain threshold, the hump along with ripple disappears, which is indicative of the coherent-incoherent dynamical cr…
Using the diagonal entropy, we analyze the dynamical signatures of the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick (LMG) model excited-state quantum phase transition (ESQPT). We first show that the time evolution of the diagonal entropy behaves as an efficient indicator of the presence of an ESQPT. We further consider the diagonal entropy as a random variable over a certain time interval and we find that its associated probability distribution provides a clear distinction between the different phases of ESQPT. We observe that the probability distribution of the diagonal entropy at the ESQPT critical point has an uni…
In the weak-coupling limit approach to open quantum systems, the presence of the bath is eliminated and accounted for by a master equation that introduces dissipative contributions to the system reduced dynamics. Within this framework, there are no bath entropy contributions to the entropy balance. We show that, as a consequence, the entropy production fails to be positive for a class of physically legitimate (i.e., completely positive and trace preserving) non-Markovian dynamical maps. Moreover, in the absence of the semigroup property, if the reduced dynamics has a thermal asymptotic state, …
For a simple model we derive analytic expressions of entropy exchange and coherent information, from which relations between them and the concurrence are drawn. We find that in the quantum evolution the entropy exchange exhibits behavior \textsl{opposite} to that of the concurrence, whereas the coherent information shows features very similar to those of the concurrence. The meaning of this result for general systems is discussed.
In this paper, we review the concept of entropy in connection with the description of quantum unstable systems. We revise the conventional definition of entropy due to Boltzmann and extend it so as to include the presence of complex-energy states. After introducing a generalized basis of states which includes resonances, and working with amplitudes instead of probabilities, we~found an expression for the entropy which exhibits real and imaginary components. We discuss the meaning of the imaginary part of the entropy on the basis of the similarities existing between thermal and time evolutions.
Linearity of a dynamical entropy means that the dynamical entropy of the n-fold composition of a dynamical map with itself is equal to n times the dynamical entropy of the map for every positive integer n. We show that the quantum dynamical entropy introduced by Slomczynski and Zyczkowski is nonlinear in the time interval between successive measurements of a quantum dynamical system. This is in contrast to Kolmogorov-Sinai dynamical entropy for classical dynamical systems, which is linear in time. We also compute the exact values of quantum dynamical entropy for the Hadamard walk with varying …
We consider a single free spin 1/2 particle. The reduced density matrix for its spin is not covariant under Lorentz transformations. The spin entropy is not a relativistic scalar and has no invariant meaning.

We construct a complete set of Wannier functions which are localized at both given positions and momenta. This allows us to introduce the quantum phase space, onto which a quantum pure state can be mapped unitarily. Using its probability distribution in quantum phase space, we define an entropy for a quantum pure state. We prove an inequality regarding the long time behavior of our entropy's fluctuation. For a typical initial state, this inequality indicates that our entropy can relax dynamically to a maximized value and stay there most of time with small fluctuations. This result echoes the q…
The geometric entropy in quantum field theory is not a Lorentz scalar and has no invariant meaning, while the black hole entropy is invariant. Renormalization of entropy and energy for reduced density matrices may lead to the negative free energy even if no boundary conditions are imposed. Presence of particles outside the horizon of a uniformly accelerated observer prevents the description in terms of a single Unruh temperature.
We give meaning to the first and second laws of thermodynamics in case of mesoscopic out-of-equilibrium systems which are driven by diffusion processes. The notion of the entropy production is analyzed. The role of the Helmholtz extremum principle is contrasted to that of the more familiar entropy extremum principles.
We investigate quantum dynamical systems defined on a finite dimensional Hilbert space and subjected to an interaction with an environment. The rate of decoherence of initially pure states, measured by the increase of their von Neumann entropy, averaged over an ensemble of random pure states, is proved to be bounded from above by the partial entropy used to define the ALF dynamical entropy. The rate of decoherence induced by the sequence of the von Neumann projectors measurements is shown to be maximal, if the measurements are performed in a randomly chosen basis. The numerically observed line…
The quench dynamics of many-body quantum systems may exhibit non-analyticities in the Loschmidt echo, a phenomenon known as dynamical phase transition (DPT). Despite considerable research into the underlying mechanisms behind this phenomenon, several open questions still remain. Motivated by this, we put forth a detailed study of DPTs from the perspective of quantum phase space and entropy production, a key concept in thermodynamics. We focus on the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model and use spin coherent states to construct the corresponding Husimi-$Q$ quasi-probability distribution. The entropy of t…
We formulate a novel approach to decoherence based on neglecting observationally inaccessible correlators. We apply our formalism to a renormalised interacting quantum field theoretical model. Using out-of-equilibrium field theory techniques we show that the Gaussian von Neumann entropy for a pure quantum state increases to the interacting thermal entropy. This quantifies decoherence and thus measures how classical our pure state has become. The decoherence rate is equal to the single particle decay rate in our model. We also compare our approach to existing approaches to decoherence in a simp…
In this article we study lossless compression of strings of pure quantum states of indeterminate-length quantum codes which were introduced by Schumacher and Westmoreland. Past work has assumed that the strings of quantum data are prepared to be encoded in an independent and identically distributed way. We introduce the notion of quantum stochastic ensembles, allowing us to consider strings of quantum states prepared in a more general way. For any identically distributed quantum stochastic ensemble we define an associated quantum Markov chain and prove that the optimal average codeword length …
In finite dimensions, we provide characterizations of the quantum dynamical semigroups that do not decrease the von Neumann, the Tsallis and the Renyi entropies, as well as a family of functions of density operators strictly related to the Schatten norms. A few remarkable consequences --- in particular, a description of the associated infinitesimal generators --- are derived, and some significant examples are discussed. Extensions of these results to semigroups of trace-preserving positive (i.e., not necessarily completely positive) maps and to a more general class of quantum entropies are als…
Entropy, and its temporal evolution, play a central role in the foundations of quantum theory and in modern quantum technologies. Here we study, in particular, the relations between the --- in general, non-Markovian --- evolution of an open quantum system, the notions of divisibility of a dynamical map and of distinguishability of quantum states, and the temporal behaviour of various entropy-related quantities such as the Renyi (and sandwiched Renyi) divergences, and the so-called min- and max- conditional entropies. This, in turn, gives rise to an operational meaning of (non-)Markovianity.
We study the dynamical behavior of nonlinear coupling in a quantum wave equation of a logarithmic type. Using statistical mechanical arguments for a large class of many-body systems, this coupling is shown to be related to temperature which is a thermodynamic conjugate to the Everett-Hirschman's quantum information entropy. A combined quantum-mechanical and field-theoretical model is proposed, which leads to a logarithmic equation with variable nonlinear coupling. We study its properties and present arguments regarding its nature and interpretation, including the connection to Landauer's princ…
The conceptual and dynamical aspects of decoherence are analyzed, while their consequences are discussed for several fundamental applications. This mechanism, which is based on a universal Schrödinger equation, is furthermore compared with the phenomenological description of open systems in terms of `quantum dynamical maps'.
Applying the theory of self-adjoint extensions of Hermitian operators to Koopman von Neumann classical mechanics, the most general set of probability distributions is found for which entropy is conserved by Hamiltonian evolution. A new dynamical phase associated with such a construction is identified. By choosing distributions not belonging to this class, we produce explicit examples of both free particles and harmonic systems evolving in a bounded phase-space in such a way that entropy is nonconserved. While these nonconserving states are classically forbidden, they may be interpreted as stat…
