The Raman interaction of a trapped ultracold ion with two travelling wave lasers is studied analytically with series solutions, in the absence of the rotating wave approximation (RWA) and the restriction of both the Lamb-Dicke limit and the weak excitation regime. The comparison is made between our solutions and those under the RWA to demonstrate the validity region of the RWA. As a practical example, the preparation of Schrödinger-cat states with our solutions is proposed beyond the weak excitation regime.
We propose a high-sensitivity magnetometry scheme based on a diamond Raman laser with visible pump absorption by an ensemble of coherently microwave driven negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy centres (NV) in the same diamond crystal. The NV centres' absorption and emission are spin-dependent. We show how the varying absorption of the NV centres changes the Raman laser output. A shift in the diamond Raman laser threshold and output occurs with the external magnetic-field and microwave driving. We develop a theoretical framework including steady-state solutions to describe the effects of coheren…
We investigate the role of non-uniform spatial density profiles of trapped atomic Bose-Einstein condensates in the propagation of Raman-matched laser pulses under conditions for electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). We find that the sharp edged axial density profile of an interacting condensate (due to a balance between external trap and repulsive atomic interaction) is advantageous for obtaining ultra slow averaged group velocities. Our results are in good quantitative agreement with a recent experiment report [Nature {\bf 397}, 594 (1999)].
Raman interaction of a trapped ultracold ion with two traveling wave lasers has been used extensively in the ion trap experiments. We solve this interaction in the absence of the rotating wave approximation by a continued fraction, without considering the restriction of the Lamb-Dicke limit and the weak excitation regime. Some interesting characteristics of the ion-trap system, particularly for the ion outside the weak excitation regime are found. Finally, a comparison of our results with the solution under the rotating wave approximation is made.
We show that it is possible to realize simultaneous Raman lasing at two different frequencies using a double-$Λ$ system pumped by a bi-frequency field. The Raman lasers are phase-locked to one another, and the beat-frequency matches the energy difference between the two meta-stable ground states. Akin to a conventional Raman laser, the phase-locked Raman laser pair is expected to be subluminal. As such, it is expected to be highly stable against perturbations in cavity length, and have a quantum noise limited linewidth that is far below that of a conventional laser. Because of these properties…
We present a scheme to obtain the coherently enhanced Raman scattering in atomic vapor which is induced by a spin wave initially written by a weak write laser. The enhancement of Raman scattering is dependent on the number and the spatial distribution of the flipped atoms generated by the weak write laser. Such an enhanced Raman scattering may have practical applications in quantum information, nonlinear optics and laser spectroscopy because of its simplicity.
We describe an ion-based cavity-QED system in which the internal dynamics of an atom is coupled to the modes of an optical cavity by vacuum-stimulated Raman transitions. We observe Raman spectra for different excitation polarizations and find quantitative agreement with theoretical simulations. Residual motion of the ion introduces motional sidebands in the Raman spectrum and leads to ion delocalization. The system offers prospects for cavity-assisted resolved-sideband ground-state cooling and coherent manipulation of ions and photons.
We address an experimental scheme to analyze the optical bistability and the entanglement of two movable mirrors coupled to a two-mode laser inside a doubly resonant cavity. With this aim we investigate the master equations of the atom-cavity subsystem in conjunction with the quantum Langevin equations that describe the interaction of the mirror cavity. The parametric amplification-type coupling induced by the two-photon coherence on the optical bistability of the intracavity mean photon numbers is found and investigated. Under this condition, the optical intensities exhibit bistability for al…
We study cooling of the collective vibrational motion of two 138Ba+ ions confined in an electrodynamic trap and irradiated with laser light close to the resonances S_1/2-P_1/2 (493 nm) and P_1/2-D_3/2 (650 nm). The motional state of the ions is monitored by a spatially resolving photo multiplier. Depending on detuning and intensity of the cooling lasers, macroscopically different motional states corresponding to different ion temperatures are observed. We also derive the ions' temperature from detailed analytical calculations of laser cooling taking into account the Zeeman structure of the ene…
We show that an absolute coherent phase of a laser can be used to manipulate the entanglement of photon pairs of two-photon laser. Our focus is on the generation of a continuous source of entangled photon pairs in the double $Λ$ (or Raman) scheme. We study the dependence of steady state entanglement on the phase and laser parameters. We obtain a relationship between entanglement and two-photon correlation. We derive conditions that give steady state entanglement for the Raman-EIT scheme and use it to identify region of steady state macroscopic entanglement. No entanglement is found for the dou…
We propose and analyse a scheme for measuring the quadrature statistics of an atom laser beam using extant optical homodyning and Raman atom laser techniques. Reversal of the normal Raman atom laser outcoupling scheme is used to map the quantum statistics of an incoupled beam to an optical probe beam. A multimode model of the spatial propagation dynamics shows that the Raman incoupler gives a clear signal of de Broglie wave quadrature squeezing for both pulsed and continuous inputs. Finally, we show that experimental realisations of the scheme may be tested with existing methods via measuremen…
We consider the feasibility of performing quantum logic operations based on stimulated Raman transitions in trapped Calcium ions. This technique avoids many of the technical difficulties involved with laser stabilisation, and only three laser wavelengths are required, none of which need have particularly stringent requirements on their bandwidths. The possible problems with experimental realisations are discussed in detail.
The use of Raman laser generated by modulation for light-pulse atom interferometer allows to have a laser system more compact and robust. However, the additional laser frequencies generated can perturb the atom interferometer. In this article, we present a precise calculation of the phase shift induced by the additional laser frequencies. The model is validated by comparison with experimental measurements on an atom gravimeter. The uncertainty of the phase shift determination limits the accuracy of our compact gravimeter at 8.10^-8 m/s^2. We show that it is possible to reduce considerably this…
QED-model for multichain coupled qubit system, proposed in \cite{Part1}, was confirmed by Raman scattering studies of carbon zigzag-shaped nanotubes, produced by high energy ion beam modification of natural diamond single crystals. New quantum optics phenomenon - Rabi waves - has been experimentally identified for the first time. Raman spectra in perfect quasi-1D carbon nanotubes are quite different in comparison with well known Raman spectra in 2D carbon nanotubes of larger diameter. They characterized by vibronic mode of Su-Schriffer-Heeger $σ$-polaron lattice and its revival part in frequen…
We study the properties of an atom laser beam derived from a Bose-Einstein condensate using three different outcouplers, one based on multi-state radio frequency transitions and two others based on Raman transitions capable of imparting momentum to the beam. We first summarize the differences that arise in such systems, and how they may impact on the use of an atom laser in interferometry. Experimentally, we examine the formation of a bound state in all three outcouplers, a phenomenon which limits the atom laser flux, and find that a two-state Raman outcoupler is the preferred option for high …
We introduce a scheme for creating continuous variable entanglement between an atomic beam and an optical field, by using squeezed light to outcouple atoms from a BEC via a Raman transition. We model the full multimode dynamics of the atom laser beam and the squeezed optical field, and show that with appropriate two-photon detuning and two-photon Rabi frequency, the transmitted light is entangled in amplitude and phase with the outcoupled atom laser beam. The degree of entanglement is controllable via changes in the two-photon Rabi frequency of the outcoupling process.
We demonstrate experimentally how the process of Stimulated Raman Adiabatic Passage (STIRAP) can be utilized for efficient coherent internal state transfer in single trapped and laser-cooled $^{40}$Ca$^+$ ions. The transfer from the D$_{3/2}$ to the D$_{5/2}$ state, is detected by a fluorescence measurement revealing the population not transfered to the D$_{5/2}$ state. A coherent population transfer efficiency at the level of 95 % in a setup allowing for the internal state detection of individual ions in a string has been obtained.
A novel laser cooling mechanism was recently demonstrated using a narrow-linewidth optical transition. Counter-propagating laser beams are swept in frequency to cause adiabatic transfer between a ground state and excited state, and Doppler shifts provide time-ordering that ensures the associated photon recoils oppose the particle's motion. We now expand this technique to $^{87}$Rb, which has no narrow-linewidth optical transition, by using artificially-narrow two-photon Raman transitions. The cooling mechanism is capable of exerting large forces to compress the phase-space of the atomic ensemb…
We demonstrate a proof-of-principle magnetometer that relies on the active oscillation of a cold atom Raman laser to continuously map a field-sensitive atomic phase onto the phase of the radiated light. We demonstrate wideband sensitivity during continuous active oscillation, as well as narrowband sensitivity in passive Ramsey-like mode with translation of the narrowband detection in frequency using spin-echo techniques. The sensor operates with a sensitivity of 190 pT/Hz^(1/2) at 1 kHz and effective sensing volume of 2 * 10^-3 mm^3. Fundamental quantum limits on the magnetic field sensitivity…
We study the peformances of Raman velocimetry applied to laser-cooled, spin-polarized, cesium atoms. Atoms are optically pumped into the F=4, m=0 ground-state Zeeman sublevel, which is insensitive to magnetic perturbations. High resolution Raman stimulated spectroscopy is shown to produce Fourier-limited lines, allowing, in realistic experimental conditions, atomic velocity selection to one-fiftieth of a recoil velocity.
We demonstrate phase locking of two ultraviolet laser sources by modulating a fundamental infrared laser with 4th-order sidebands using an electro-optic modulator and phase locking of one sideband to a second fundamental infrared laser. Subsequent sum frequency generation and second harmonic generation successfully translates the frequency offset to the ultraviolet domain. The phase lock at 139 GHz is confirmed through stimulated Raman transitions for thermometry of $^9$Be$^+$ ions confined in a cryogenic Penning trap. This technique might be used for sideband cooling of single $^9$Be$^+$ ions…
We experimentally study the relaxation oscillations and amplitude stability properties of an optical laser operating deep into the bad-cavity regime using a laser-cooled $^{87}$Rb Raman laser. By combining measurements of the laser light field with nondemolition measurements of the atomic populations, we infer the response of the gain medium represented by a collective atomic Bloch vector. The results are qualitatively explained with a simple model. Measurements and theory are extended to include the effect of intermediate repumping states on the closed-loop stability of the oscillator and the…
We combine multi-channel electronic structure theory with quantum optimal control to derive Raman pulse sequences that coherently populate a valence excited state. For a neon atom, Raman target populations of up to 13% are obtained. Superpositions of the ground and valence Raman states with a controllable relative phase are found to be reachable with up to 4.5% population and phase control facilitated by the pump pulse carrier envelope phase. Our results open a route to creating core-hole excitations in molecules and aggregates that locally address specific atoms and represent the first step t…
Atom interferometry is the most successful technique for precision metrology. However, current interferometers using ultracold atoms allows one to probe the interference pattern only momentarily and has finite duty cycle, resulting in an aliasing effect and a low-bandwidth measurement -- also known as Dick effect. Interferometry with a continuous-wave atom laser shows promise in overcoming these limitations due a continuous monitoring of the interference pattern. In this work, we demonstrate a key step towards such an interferometry by demonstrating a diffraction of an `atom laser' in the Rama…
Multi-frequency Raman generation is a promising method of producing ultrashort laser pulses with high intensities and visible wavelength frequencies. In experimental realizations of multi-frequency Raman generation the Raman order peaks display several behaviours that are not explained by the current theory. We derive an analytic and perturbative expression for the spectrum radiated by a Raman medium excited by multiple Gaussian laser pulses and show that it qualitatively agrees with experimental observations.
We theoretically study a pulsed stimulated two-photon Raman outcoupler for an atom laser using a full three-dimensional description. A finite-temperature trapped Bose-condensed atomic gas is treated self-consistently by the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov equations. The model is closely related to a recent experiment on optical outcoupling [E.W. Hagley et al., Science 283, 1706 (1999)]. We analyze the momentum distribution of the output atoms and show how the output beam may be used as a probe of the quantum state for the trapped atomic gas and how it could be engineered and controlled in a nonlinear …
Gray molasses is a powerful tool for sub-Doppler laser cooling of atoms to low temperatures. For alkaline atoms, this technique is commonly implemented with cooling lasers which are blue-detuned from either the D1 or D2 line. Here we show that efficient gray molasses can be implemented on the D2 line of 40K with red-detuned lasers. We obtained temperatures of 48(2) microKelvin, which enables direct loading of 9.2(3)*10^6 atoms from a magneto-optical trap into an optical dipole trap. We support our findings by a one-dimensional model and three-dimensional numerical simulations of the optical Bl…
Plasmon-enhanced Raman scattering (PERS) becomes nonlinear when phonon pumping and phonon-stimulated scattering come into play. It is fundamental to the understanding of PERS and its photobleaching behavior. By quantization of the molecular vibration coherent state into phonon number states, we theoretically predict a stepwise dependence of PERS intensity on laser power. Experimental evidence is presented by measuring a monolayer of malachite green isothiocyanate molecules sandwiched in individual gold nanosphere-plane antennas, under radially polarized laser excitation of sub-microWatt powers…
