In this paper, we propose a new direction of research for the realization of the quantum controlled-not gate based on a technique called ``interaction-free measurement'', where qubits are two-level atoms (or ions) and information is mediated from one qubit to another by lasers in superpositions of $π$ and $2π$ pulses. We investigate the advantages and limitations of such a gate and discuss possible applicability.

We study in detail the algebraic structures underlying quantum circuits generated by CNOT gates. Our results allow us to propose polynomial-time heuristics to reduce the number of gates used in a given CNOT circuit and we also give algorithms to optimize this type of circuits in some particular cases. Finally we show how to create some usefull entangled states when a CNOT circuit acts on a fully factorized state.
We consider the implementation of two-qubit unitary transformations by means of CNOT gates and single-qubit unitary gates. We show, by means of an explicit quantum circuit, that together with local gates three CNOT gates are necessary and sufficient in order to implement an arbitrary unitary transformation of two qubits. We also identify the subset of two-qubit gates that can be performed with only two CNOT gates.

We show that any state can be prepared from a product state using at most three CNOT gates, and that, starting from the GHZ state, only two suffice. We propose a non-deterministic CNOT gate based on a quantum cloner, a quantum switch based on all optical routing of single photon by single photon, a quantum-dot spin in a double-sided optical microcavity with two photonic qubits, delay lines and other linear optical photonic devices. Our CNOT provides a fidelity of 78% with directly useful outputs for a quantum computing circuit and requires no ancillary qubits or electron spin measurements.
There are many cases where the interaction between two qubits is not precisely known, but single qubit operations are available. In this paper we show how, regardless of an incomplete knowledge of the strength or form of the interaction between two qubits, it is often possible to construct a CNOT gate which has arbitrarily high fidelity. In particular, we show that oscillations in the strength of the exchange interaction in solid state Si and Ge structures are correctable.

We put forward a new CNOT gate scheme with atoms and ions based on quantum interrogation and a bosonic particle extension of the models of linear optics quantum computation. We show how the possibility of particle collision can provide the strong interaction that is needed for universal quantum gates. Two atom optics proposals are provided. We study the error rate of CNOT operations in the Kane solid state quantum computer architecture. A spin Hamiltonian is used to describe the system. Dephasing is included as exponential decay of the off diagonal elements of the system's density matrix. Using available spin echo decay data, the CNOT error rate is estimated at approsimately 10^{-3}.
We derive a set of composite pulse sequences that generates CNOT gates and correct all systematic errors within the logical subspace to arbitrary order. These sequences are applicable for any two-qubit interaction Hamiltonian, and make no assumptions about the underlying noise mechanism except that it is constant on the timescale of the operation. We propose a scheme for the construction of a CNOT gate by adiabatic passage in an optical cavity. In opposition to a previously proposed method, the technique is not based on fractional adiabatic passage, which requires the control of the ratio of two pulse amplitudes. Moreover, the technique constitutes a decoherence-free method in the sense that spontaneous emission and cavity damping are avoided since the dynamics follows dark states.
A highly feasible dressed-state scheme, which greatly speeds up the adiabatic population transfer of a quantum system, is applied for implementing a fast CNOT gate in a cavity QED system. We study the problem of CNOT-optimal quantum circuit synthesis over gate sets consisting of CNOT and Z-basis rotations of arbitrary angles. We show that the circuit-polynomial correspondence relates such circuits to Fourier expansions of pseudo-Boolean functions, and that for certain classes of functions this expansion uniquely determines the minimum CNOT cost of an implementation. As a corollary we prove that CNOT minimization over CNOT and phase gates is at least as hard as synthesizing a CNOT-optimal circuit computing a set of parities of its inputs. We experimentally constructed an all-microwave scheme for the controlled-NOT (cNOT) gate between two superconducting transmon qubits in a three dimensional cavity. Our cNOT gate is based on the microwave-activated phase (MAP) gate, which requires an additional procedure to compensate the accumulated phases during the operation of the MAP gate. In the framework of ion-trap quantum computing, we develop a characterization of experimentally realistic imperfections which may affect the Cirac-Zoller implementation of the CNOT gate. The CNOT operation is performed by applying a protocol of five laser pulses of appropriate frequency and polarization. The laser-pulse protocol exploits auxiliary levels, and its imperfect implementation leads to unitary as well as non-unitary errors affecting the CNOT operation. We show how to construct a near deterministic CNOT using several single photons sources, linear optics, photon number resolving quantum non-demolition detectors and feed-forward. This gate does not require the use of massively entangled states common to other implementations and is very efficient on resources with only one ancilla photon required. We report the first experimental demonstration of a quantum controlled-NOT gate for different photons, which is classically feed-forwardable. In the experiment, we achieved this goal with the use only of linear optics, an entangled ancillary pair of photons and post-selection. The techniques developed in our experiment will be of significant importance for quantum information processing with linear optics.
We propose and experimentally demonstrate that a Mach-Zehnder interferometer composed of polarized beam splitters and a pentaprism in the place of one of the mirrors works as a linear optical quantum controlled-NOT (CNOT) gate. We have embedded two fixed-frequency Al/AlO$_{\textrm{x}}$/Al transmons, with ground-to-excited transition frequencies at 6.0714 GHz and 6.7543 GHz, in a single 3D Al cavity with a fundamental mode at 7.7463 GHz. It is possible to use CNOT gates to improve a detector by making a large cat state then measuring every qubit in that state. Recent experiments have demonstrated two-qubit fidelities above 99%, however, theoretically, the fidelity of CNOT operations is limited by off-resonant driving described by off-diagonal terms in the system Hamiltonian. Here we investigate these off-diagonal contributions and we propose a fidelity improvement of several orders of magnitude by using asymmetric driving. Therefore, we provide a description of an ac virtual gate based on a simple capacitance model which not only enables a high fidelity CNOT but also crosstalk reduction when scaling up spin qubit devices to larger arrays.
We present the first quantum controlled-NOT (CNOT) gate realized using a fiber-based indistinguishable photon-pair source in the 1.55 $μ$m telecommunications band. Using this free-space CNOT gate, all four Bell states are produced and fully characterized by performing quantum state tomography, demonstrating the gate's unambiguous entangling capability and high fidelity. Telecom-band operation makes this CNOT gate particularly suitable for quantum information processing tasks that are at the interface of quantum communication and linear optical quantum computing.

In this note we present explicit canonical forms for all the elements in the two-qubit CNOT-Dihedral group, with minimal numbers of controlled-S (CS) and controlled-X (CX) gates, using the generating set of quantum gates [X, T, CX, CS]. We provide an algorithm to successively construct the n-qubit CNOT-Dihedral group, asserting an optimal number of controlled-X (CX) gates. These results are needed to estimate gate errors via non-Clifford randomized benchmarking and may have further applications to circuit optimization over fault-tolerant gate sets.
We suggest a near deterministic compact model of a photonic CNOT gate based on a quantum dot trapped in a double sided optical microcavity and a universal cloner. Our design surpasses the cloner optimal limit of 5/6 and we show that it provides fidelity around 91 % in the weak coupling regime.

In this work we propose a novel numerical approach to decompose general quantum programs in terms of single- and two-qubit quantum gates with a $CNOT$ gate count very close to the current theoretical lower bounds.
