The inference of entangled quantum states by recourse to the maximum entropy principle is considered in connection with the recently pointed out problem of fake inferred entanglement [R. Horodecki, {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. A {\it 59} (1999) 1799]. We show that there are operators $\hat A$, both diagonal and non diagonal in the Bell basis, such that when the expectation value $<\hat A>$ is taken as prior information the problem of fake entanglement is not solved by adding a new constraint associated with the mean value of $\hat A^2$ (unlike what happens when the partial information is given by the expectation value of a Bell operator). The fake entanglement generated by the maximum entropy principle is also studied quantitatively by comparing the entanglement of formation of the inferred state with that of the original one.
Uncertainty relations play a significant role in drawing a line between classical physics and quantum physics. Since the introduction by Heisenberg, these relations have been considerably explored. However, the effect of quantum entanglement on uncertainty relations was not probed. Berta et al. [Nature Physics 6, 659-662 (2010)] removed this gap by deriving a conditional-entropic uncertainty relation in the presence of quantum entanglement. In the same spirit, using inferred-variance, we formulate uncertainty relations in the presence of entanglement for general two-qubit systems and arbitrary…
Entanglement witnesses form an effective method to locally detect entanglement in the laboratory without having the prior knowledge of the full density matrix. However, separable states can be erroneously indicated as entangled in such detections in the presence of wrong measurements or loss in detectors. Measurement-device-independent entanglement witnesses (MDI-EWs) never detect fake entanglement even under wrong measurements and for a particular kind of lossy detectors. A crucial assumption in the case of faithful detection of entanglement employing MDI-EWs is that the preparation devices p…
We present a fake-signal-and-cheating attack strategy for the dishonest agent in quantum secret sharing (QSS) to steal the information of the other agents' fully and freely. It is found that almost all the QSS protocols existing, such as the two famous QSS protocols, the Hillery-Bu$\check{z}$ek-Berthiaume [Phys. Rev. A \textbf{59}, 1829 (1999)] and the Karlsson-Koashi-Imoto [Phys. Rev. A \textbf{59}, 162 (1999)], can be eavesdropped freely if the process for the eavesdropping check is accomplished with the cooperation of the dishonest agent. He can sends a fake signal to the other agents after…
We examine the inference of quantum density operators from incomplete information by means of the maximization of general non-additive entropic forms. Extended thermodynamic relations are given. When applied to a bipartite spin 1/2 system, the formalism allows to avoid fake entanglement for data based on the Bell-CHSH observable, and, in general, on any set of Bell constraints. Particular results obtained with the Tsallis entropy and with an introduced exponential entropic form are also discussed.
The problem of quantum state inference and the concept of quantum entanglement are studied using a non-additive measure in the form of Tsallis entropy indexed by the positive parameter q. The maximum entropy principle associated with this entropy along with its thermodynamic interpretation are discussed in detail for the Einstein-Podolosky-Rosen pair of two spin-1/2 particles. Given the data on the Bell-Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt observable, the analytic expression is given for the inferred quantum entangled state. It is shown that for q greater than unity, indicating the sub-additive feature …
Maldacena and Susskind have proposed a correspondence between wormholes and entanglement, dubbed ER=EPR. We study this in the context of 3d topological quantum field theory, where we show that the formation of a wormhole is the same process as creating a particle-antiparticle pair. A key feature of the ER=EPR proposal is that certain apparently entangled degrees of freedom turn out to be the same. We name this phenomenon "fake entanglement", and show how it arises in our topological quantum field theory model.
A concern has been expressed that ``the Jaynes principle can produce fake entanglement'' [R. Horodecki et al., Phys. Rev. A {\bf 59}, 1799 (1999)]. In this paper we discuss the general problem of distilling maximally entangled states from $N$ copies of a bipartite quantum system about which only partial information is known, for instance in the form of a given expectation value. We point out that there is indeed a problem with applying the Jaynes principle of maximum entropy to more than one copy of a system, but the nature of this problem is classical and was discussed extensively by Jaynes. …
The question whether global entanglement of a multiparticle quantum system can be inferred from local properties is of great relevance for the theory of quantum correlations as well as for experimental implementations. We present a method to systematically find quantum states, for which the two- or three-body marginals do not contain any entanglement, nevertheless, the knowledge of these reduced states is sufficient to prove genuine multiparticle entanglement of the global state. With this, we show that the emergence of global entanglement from separable local quantum states occurs frequently …
We investigate the correlations between different bipartitions of an exactly solvable one-dimensional many-body Moshinsky model consisting of Nn "nuclei" and Ne "electrons". We study the dependence of entanglement on the inter-particle interaction strength, on the number of particles, and on the particle masses. Consistent with kinematic intuition, the entanglement between two subsystems vanishes when the subsystems have very different masses, while it attains its maximal value for subsystems of comparable mass. We show how this entanglement feature can be inferred by means of the Born-Oppenhe…
We report observations of entanglement of two remote atomic qubits, achieved by generating an entangled state of an atomic qubit and a single photon at Site A, transmitting the photon to Site B in an adjacent laboratory through an optical fiber, and converting the photon into an atomic qubit. Entanglement of the two remote atomic qubits is inferred by performing, locally, quantum state transfer of each of the atomic qubits onto a photonic qubit and subsequent measurement of polarization correlations in violation of the Bell inequality |S| <2. We experimentally determine S =2.16 +/- 0.03. Entan…
Entanglement does not correspond to any observable and its evaluation always corresponds to an estimation procedure where the amount of entanglement is inferred from the measurements of one or more proper observables. Here we address optimal estimation of entanglement in the framework of local quantum estimation theory and derive the optimal observable in terms of the symmetric logarithmic derivative. We evaluate the quantum Fisher information and, in turn, the ultimate bound to precision for several families of bipartite states, either for qubits or continuous variable systems, and for differ…
We assess the performance of an entanglement indicator which can be obtained directly from tomograms, avoiding state reconstruction procedures. In earlier work, we have examined this tomographic entanglement indicator, and a variant obtained from it, in the context of continuous variable systems. It has been shown that, in multipartite systems of radiation fields, these indicators fare as well as standard measures of entanglement. In this paper, we assess these indicators in the case of two generic hybrid quantum systems, the double Jaynes-Cummings model and the double Tavis-Cummings model usi…
The thorny issue of relating information theory to cosmology is here addressed by assuming a possible connection between quantum entanglement measures and observable universe. In particular, we propose a cosmological toy model, where the equation of state of the cosmological fluid, which drives the today observed cosmic acceleration, can be inferred from quantum entanglement between different cosmological epochs. In such a way the dynamical dark energy results as byproduct of quantum entanglement.
We suggest that the dark matter in the universe has quantum entanglement if the dark matter is a Bose-Einstein condensation of ultra-light scalar particles. In this theory, any two regions of a galaxy are quantum entangled due to the quantum nature of the condensate. We calculate the entanglement entropy of a typical galactic halo, which turns out to be at least $O(ln(M/m))$, where $M$ is the mass of the halo and $m$ is the mass of a dark matter particle. The entanglement can be inferred from the rotation curves of the galaxy or the interference patterns of the dark matter density.
Creating large-scale entanglement lies at the heart of many quantum information processing protocols and the investigation of fundamental physics. For multipartite quantum systems, it is crucial to identify not only the presence of entanglement but also its detailed structure. This is because in a generic experimental situation with sufficiently many subsystems involved, the production of so-called genuine multipartite entanglement remains a formidable challenge. Consequently, focusing exclusively on the identification of this strongest type of entanglement may result in an all or nothing situ…
We experimentally demonstrate quantum teleportation for continuous variables using squeezed-state entanglement. The teleportation fidelity for a real experimental system is calculated explicitly, including relevant imperfection factors such as propagation losses, detection inefficiencies and phase fluctuations. The inferred fidelity for input coherent states is F = 0.61 +- 0.02, which when corrected for the efficiency of detection by the output observer, gives a fidelity of 0.62. By contrast, the projected result based on the independently measured entanglement and efficiencies is 0.69. The te…
Many-particle entanglement is a fundamental concept of quantum physics that still presents conceptual challenges. While spin-squeezed and other nonclassical states of atomic ensembles were used to enhance measurement precision in quantum metrology, the notion of entanglement in these systems remained controversial because the correlations between the indistinguishable atoms were witnessed by collective measurements only. Here we use highresolution imaging to directly measure the spin correlations between spatially separated parts of a spin-squeezed Bose-Einstein condensate. We observe entangle…
A core process in many quantum tasks is the generation of entanglement. It is being actively studied in a variety of physical settings - from simple bipartite systems to complex multipartite systems. In this work we experimentally study the generation of bipartite entanglement in a nanophotonic system. Entanglement is generated via the quantum interference of two surface plasmon polaritons in a beamsplitter structure, i.e. utilising the Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) effect, and its presence is verified using quantum state tomography. The amount of entanglement is quantified by the concurrence and we fi…
We study the role that both vacuum fluctuations and vacuum entanglement of a scalar field play in identifying the spacetime topology, which is not prescribed from first principles---neither in general relativity or quantum gravity. We analyze how the entanglement and observable correlations acquired between two particle detectors are sensitive to the spatial topology of spacetime. We examine the detector's time evolution to all orders in perturbation theory and then study the phenomenon of vacuum entanglement harvesting in Minkowski spacetime and two flat topologically distinct spacetimes cons…
We revisit the notion of deniability in quantum key exchange (QKE), a topic that remains largely unexplored. In the only work on this subject by Donald Beaver, it is argued that QKE is not necessarily deniable due to an eavesdropping attack that limits key equivocation. We provide more insight into the nature of this attack and how it extends to other constructions such as QKE obtained from uncloneable encryption. We then adopt the framework for quantum authenticated key exchange, developed by Mosca et al., and extend it to introduce the notion of coercer-deniable QKE, formalized in terms of t…
We discuss what can be inferred from measurements on one- and two-qubit systems using a single measurement basis at various times. We show that, given reasonable physical assumptions, carrying out such measurements at quarter-period intervals is enough to demonstrate coherent oscillations of one or two qubits between the relevant measurement basis states. One can thus infer from such measurements alone that an approximately equal superposition of two measurement basis states has been created in a coherent oscillation experiment. Similarly, one can infer that a near maximally entangled state of…
The electron spin state of a singly charged semiconductor quantum dot has been shown to form a suitable single qubit for quantum computing architectures with fast gate times. A key challenge in realizing a useful quantum dot quantum computing architecture lies in demonstrating the ability to scale the system to many qubits. In this letter, we report an all optical experimental demonstration of quantum entanglement between a single electron spin confined to single charged semiconductor quantum dot and the polarization state of a photon spontaneously emitted from the quantum dot's excited state.…

The quantum relative Renyi entropy of two density matrices was recently extended when the two do not commute, from which a conditional entropy is identified. This is here extended to the corresponding Tsallis relative entropy and to its conditional form. This new expression of Tsallis conditional entropy is shown to witness entanglement beyond the method based on global and local spectra of composite quantum states. When the reduced density matrix happens to be a maximally mixed state, this conditional entropy coincides with the expression in terms of Tsallis entropies derived earlier by Abe a…
In the 1987 spin retrodiction puzzle of Vaidman, Aharonov, and Albert one is challenged to ascertain the values of $σ_x$, $σ_y$, and $σ_z$ of a spin-1/2 particle by utilizing entanglement. We report the experimental realization of a quantum-optical version in which the outcome of an intermediate polarization projection is inferred by exploiting single-photon two-qubit quantum gates. The experimental success probability is consistently above the 90.2% threshold of the optimal one-qubit strategy, with an average success probability of 95.6%.
