If the interaction between qubits in a quantum computer has a non-diagonal form (e.g. the Heisenberg interaction), then one must be able to "switch it off" in order to prevent uncontrolled propagation of states. Therefore, such QC schemes typically demand local control of the interaction strength between each pair of neighboring qubits. Here we demonstrate that this degree of control is not necessary: it suffices to switch the interaction collectively - something that can in principle be achieved by global fields rather than with local manipulations. This observation may offer a significant simplification for various solid state, optical lattice and NMR implementations.

The control of the ultracold collisions between neutral atoms is an extensive and successful field of study. The tools developed allow for ultracold chemical reactions to be managed using magnetic fields, light fields and spin-state manipulation of the colliding particles among other methods. The control of chemical reactions in ultracold atom-ion collisions is a young and growing field of research. Recently, the collision energy and the ion electronic state were used to control atom-ion interactions. Here, we demonstrate spin-controlled atom-ion inelastic processes. In our experiment, both sp…
We investigate the feasibility of single-shot Toffoli- and Fredkin-gate realizations in qubit arrays with Heisenberg-type exchange interactions between adjacent qubits. As follows from the Lie-algebraic criteria of controllability, such an array is rendered completely controllable -- equivalent to allowing universal quantum computation -- by a Zeeman-like control field with two orthogonal components acting on a single "actuator" qubit. Adopting this local-control setting, we start our analysis with piecewise-constant control fields and determine the global maxima of the relevant figure of meri…
Quantum dot hybrid qubits exploit an extended charge-noise sweet spot that suppresses dephasing and has enabled the experimental achievement of high-fidelity single-qubit gates. However, current proposals for two-qubit gates require tuning the qubits away from their sweet spots. Here, we propose a two-hybrid-qubit coupling scheme, based on exchange interactions, that allows the qubits to remain at their sweet spots at all times. The interaction is controlled via the inter-qubit tunnel coupling. By simulating such gates in the presence of realistic quasistatic and $1\!/\!f$ charge noise, we sho…
We study the creation of quantum skyrmions in quadratic nanoscopic lattices of quantum spins coupled by Dzyaloshinkii-Moriya and exchange interactions. We numerically show that different kinds of quantum skyrmions, characterized by the magnitude of their spin expectation values and strong differences in their stability, can appear as ground state and as metastable excitations. In dependence on the coupling strengths and the lattice size, an adiabatic rotation scheme of the magnetization at the lattice boundaries allows for a controlled creation of quantum skyrmions.
We consider a model of two interacting always-on, exchange-only qubits for which controlled phase ($CPHASE$), controlled NOT ($CNOT$), quantum Fourier transform ($QFT$) and $SWAP$ operations can be implemented only in a few electrical pulses in a nanosecond time scale. Each qubit is built of three quantum dots (TQD) in a triangular geometry with three electron spins which are always kept coupled by exchange interactions only. The qubit states are encoded in a doublet subspace and are fully electrically controlled by a voltage applied to gate electrodes. The two qubit quantum gates are realized…
We show that the exchange interaction of a singlet-triplet spin qubit confined in double quantum dots, when being controlled by the barrier method, is insensitive to a charged impurity lying along certain directions away from the center of the double-dot system. These directions differ from the polar axis of the double dots by the magic angle, equaling $\arccos\left(1/\sqrt{3}\right)\approx 54.7^\circ$, a value previously found in atomic physics and nuclear magnetic resonance. This phenomenon can be understood from an expansion of the additional Coulomb interaction created by the impurity, but…

We consider a model of quantum dynamical semigroup on a finite dimensional fermionic space, obtained as the continuous-time limit of a repeated interactions model between a system and several thermal baths, with a dynamic driven by quadratic Hamiltonians. We assume that there is a globally conserved observable which can be expressed as a sum of energies on the system and on each baths, and we study the energy fluxes between the baths and the system. First, we consider only the mean energy fluxes, and prove that every thermal machines on quasi-free fermions in trivial, in the sense that it is n…
