We ask what type of mixed quantum states can arise when a number of separated parties start by sharing a pure quantum state and then this pure state becomes contaminated by noise. We show that not all mixed states arise in this way. This is even the case if the separated parties actively try to degrade their initial pure state by arbitrary local actions and classical communication.
The entanglement evolution of two qubits under local, single- and two- sided noisy channels is investigated. It is found that for all pure initial states, the entanglement under a one-sided noisy channel is completely determined by the maximal trace distance which is the main element to construct the measure of non-Markovianity. For the two-sided noisy channel case, when the qubits are initially prepared in a general class of states, no matter pure or mixed, the entanglement can be expressed as the products of initial entanglement and the channels' action on the maximally entangled state.
In our work we consider the following problem in the context of teleportation: an unknown pure state have to be teleported and there are two laboratories which can perform the task. One laboratory uses a pure non maximally entangled channel but has a capability of performing the joint measurement on bases with a constrained degree of entanglement; the other lab makes use of a mixed X-state channel but can perform a joint measurement on bases with higher entanglement degrees. We compare the average teleportation fidelity achieved in both cases, finding that the fidelity achieved with the X-stat…
Measurement induced nonlocality (MIN) captures global nonlocal effect of bipartite quantum state due to locally invariant projective measurements. In this paper, we propose a new version of MIN using fidelity induced metric, andthe same is calculated for pure and mixed states. For mixed state, the upper bound is obtained from eigenvalues of correlation matrix. Further, dynamics of MIN and fidelity based MIN under various noisy quantum channels show that they are more robust than entanglement.
In a realistic situation, the secret sharing of classical or quantum information will involve the transmission of this information through noisy channels. We consider a three qubit pure state. This state becomes a mixed-state when the qubits are distributed over noisy channels. We focus on a specific noisy channel, the phase-damping channel. We propose a protocol for secret sharing of classical information with this and related noisy channels. This protocol can also be thought of as cooperative superdense coding. We also discuss other noisy channels to examine the possibility of secret sharing…
The major problem of multiparameter quantum estimation theory is to find an ultimate measurement scheme to go beyond the standard quantum limits that each quasi-classical estimation measurement is limited by. Although, in some specifics quantum protocols without environmental noise, the ultimate sensitivity of a multiparameter quantum estimation can beat the standard quantum limit. However, the presence of noise imposes limitations on the enhancement of precision due to the inevitable existence of environmental fluctuations. Here, we address the motivation behind the usage of Gaussian quantum …
We address continuous variable quantum teleportation in Gaussian quantum noisy channels, either thermal or squeezed-thermal. We first study the propagation of twin-beam and evaluate a threshold for its separability. We find that the threshold for purely thermal channels is always larger than for squeezed-thermal ones. On the other hand, we show that squeezing the channel improves teleportation of squeezed states and, in particular, we find the class of squeezed states that are better teleported in a given noisy channel. Finally, we find regimes where optimized teleportation of squeezed states …
Two qubits in pure entangled states going through separate paths and interacting with their own individual environments will gradually lose their entanglement. Here we show that the entanglement change of a two-qubit state due to amplitude damping noises can be recovered by entanglement swapping. Some initial states can be asymptotically purified into maximally entangled states by iteratively using our protocol.
We present a practical and general scheme of remote preparation for pure and mixed state, in which an auxiliary qubit and controlled-NOT gate are used. We discuss the remote state preparation (RSP) in two important types of decoherent channel (depolarizing and dephaseing). In our experiment, we realize RSP in the dephaseing channel by using spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC), linear optical elements and single photon detector.
Two separated observers, by applying local operations to a supply of not-too-impure entangled states ({\em e.g.} singlets shared through a noisy channel), can prepare a smaller number of entangled pairs of arbitrarily high purity ({\em e.g.} near-perfect singlets). These can then be used to faithfully teleport unknown quantum states from one observer to the other, thereby achieving faithful transfrom one observer to the other, thereby achieving faithful transmission of quantum information through a noisy channel. We give upper and lower bounds on the yield $D(M)$ of pure singlets ($\ket{Ψ^-}$)…
We present a quantum secure direct communication protocol where the channels are not maximally entangled states. The communication parties utilize decoy photons to check eavesdropping. After ensuring the security of the quantum channel, the sender encodes the secret message and transmits it to the receiver by using Controlled-NOT operation and von Neumann measurement. The protocol is simple and realizable with present technology. We also show the protocol is secure for noisy quantum channel.
We work with reference to a well-known semiclassical model, in which quantum degrees of freedom interact with classical ones. We show that, in the classical limit, it is possible to represent classical results (e.g., classical chaos) by means a pure-state density matrix.
We propose an entanglement purification protocol for high-dimensional multipartite systems. In the protocol we can select a subensemble in a pure generalized Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) state. This post-selection can be made by detecting the noise which contaminated the initial pure ensemble when the systems past through a noisy environment. For the detection of noise we investigate correlation properties of GHZ states and analyze their possible errors due to a noisy environment. We show that the presented protocol is more efficient than a simple generalization of the purification protoc…
Although near-term quantum devices have no comprehensive solution for correcting errors, numerous techniques have been proposed for achieving practical value. Two works have recently introduced the very promising Error Suppression by Derangements (ESD) and Virtual Distillation (VD) techniques. The approach exponentially suppresses errors and ultimately allows one to measure expectation values in the pure state as the dominant eigenvector of the noisy quantum state. Interestingly this dominant eigenvector is, however, different than the ideal computational state and it is the aim of the present…
We construct a class of quantum channels in arbitrary dimensions for which entanglement improves the performance of the channel. The channels have correlated noise and when the level of correlation passes a critical value we see a sharp transition in the optimal input states (states which minimize the output entropy) from separable to maximally entangled states. We show that for a subclass of channels with some extra conditions, including the examples which we consider, the states which minimize the output entropy are the ones which maximize the mutual information.
Gyroscope for rotation sensing plays a key role in inertial navigation systems. Developing more precise gyroscopes than the conventional ones bounded by classical shot-noise limit by using quantum resources has attracted much attention. However, existing quantum gyroscope schemes suffer severe deterioration under the influence of decoherence, which is called the no-go theorem of noisy metrology. Here, by using two quantized optical fields as quantum probe, we propose a quantum gyroscope scheme breaking through the constraint of the no-go theorem. Our exact analysis of the non-Markovian noise r…
Known entanglement purification protocols for mixed states use collective measurements on several copies of the state in order to increase the entanglement of some of them. We address the question of whether it is possible to purify the entanglement of a state by processing each copy separately. While this is possible for pure states, we show that this is impossible, in general, for mixed states. The importance of this result both conceptually and for experimental realization of purification is discussed. We also give explicit invariants of an entangled state of two qubits under local actions …
We propose a compositional approach to construct subspaces consisting entirely of r-uniform states, including the ones in heterogeneous systems. The approach allows one to construct new objects from old ones: it combines encoding isometries of pure quantum error correcting codes with entangled multipartite states and subspaces. The presented methods can be also used to construct new pure quantum error correcting codes from certain combinations of old ones. The approach is illustrated with various examples including constructions of 2-, 3-, 4-, 5-uniform subspaces. The results are then compared…
Local pure states represent a fundamental resource in quantum information theory. In this work we obtain one-shot achievable bounds on the rates for local purity distillation, in the single-party and in the two-party cases. In both situations, local noisy operations are freely available, while in the two-party case also one-way classical communication can be used. In addition, in both situations local pure ancillas can be borrowed, as long as they are discounted from the final net rate of distillation. The one-shot rates that we obtain, written in terms of mutual information-like quantities, a…
We investigate the effect of noisy channels in a classical information transfer through a multipartite state which acts as a substrate for the distributed quantum dense coding protocol between several senders and two receivers. The situation is qualitatively different from the case with one or more senders and a single receiver. We obtain an upper bound on the multipartite capacity which is tightened in case of the covariant noisy channel. We also establish a relation between the genuine multipartite entanglement of the shared state and the capacity of distributed dense coding using that state…
Quantum information processing exploits all the features quantum mechanics offers. Among them there is the possibility to induce nonlinear maps on a quantum system by involving two or more identical copies of the given system in the same state. Such maps play a central role in distillation protocols used for quantum key distribution. We determine that such protocols may exhibit sensitive, quasi-chaotic evolution not only for pure initial states but also for mixed states, i.e. the complex dynamical behavior is not destroyed by small initial uncertainty. We show that the appearance of sensitive,…
The Pusey-Barrett-Rudolph (PBR) theorem deals with the realism of the quantum states. It establishes that every pure quantum state is real, in the context of quantum ontological models. Specifically, by guaranteeing the property of not-Post-Peierls ($\neg$PP) compatibility (or antidistinguishability) for a particular set of states $P$, together with the ad hoc postulate known as Preparation Independence Postulate (PIP), the theorem establishes that these two properties imply the $ψ$-onticity (realism) of the set of all pure states. This PBR result has triggered two particular lines of research…
A popular model of decoherence based on the linear coupling to harmonic oscillator heat baths is analized and shown to be inappropriate in the regime where decoherence dominates over energy dissipation, called pure decoherence regime. The similar mechanism essentially related to the energy conservation implies that, on the contrary to the recent conjectures, chaotic environments can be less efficient decoherers than regular ones. Finally, the elastic scattering mechanism is advocated as the simplest source of pure decoherence.
Quantum-limited amplifiers increase the amplitude of quantum signals at the price of introducing additional noise. Quantum purification protocols operate in the reverse way, by reducing the noise while attenuating the signal. Here we investigate a scenario that interpolates between these two extremes. We search for the optimal physical process that generates $M$ approximate copies of pure and amplified coherent state, starting from $N$ copies of a noisy coherent state with Gaussian modulation. We prove that the optimal deterministic processes are always Gaussian, whereas non-Gaussianity powers…
Quantum supremacy poses that a realistic quantum computer can perform a calculation that classical computers cannot in any reasonable amount of time. It has become a topic of significant research interest since the birth of the field, and it is intrinsically based on the efficient construction of quantum algorithms. It has been shown that there exists an expeditious way to solve the noisy linear (or learning with errors) problems in quantum machine learning theory via a well-posed quantum sampling over pure quantum states. In this paper, we propose an advanced method to reduce the sample size …
A quantum communication network can be constructed by distributing a multipartite entangled state to space-separated nodes. Entangled optical beams with highest flying speed and measurable brightness can be used as carriers to convey information in quantum communication networks. Losses and noises existing in real communication channels will reduce or even totally destroy entanglement. The phenomenon of disentanglement will result in the complete failure of quantum communication. Here, we present the experimental demonstrations on the disentanglement and the entanglement revival of tripartite …
This paper addresses some general questions of quantum information theory arising from the transmission of quantum entanglement through (possibly noisy) quantum channels. A pure entangled state is prepared of a pair of systems $R$ and $Q$, after which $Q$ is subjected to a dynamical evolution given by the superoperator $\superop^{Q}$. Two interesting quantities can be defined for this process: the entanglement fidelity $F_{e}$ and the entropy production $S_{e}$. It turns out that neither of these quantities depends in any way on the system $R$, but only on the initial state and dynamical evolu…
We consider the task of anonymously transmitting a quantum message in a network. We present a protocol that accomplishes this task using the W state and we analyze its performance in a quantum network where some form of noise is present. We then compare the performance of our protocol with some of the existing protocols developed for the task of anonymous transmission. We show that, in many regimes, our protocol tolerates more noise and achieves higher fidelities of the transmitted quantum message than the other ones. Furthermore, we demonstrate that our protocol tolerates one non-responsive n…
Maximally entangled states--a resource for quantum information processing--can only be shared through noiseless quantum channels, whereas in practice channels are noisy. Here we ask: Given a noisy quantum channel, what is the maximum attainable purity (measured by singlet fraction) of shared entanglement for single channel use and local trace preserving operations? We find an exact formula of the maximum singlet fraction attainable for a qubit channel and give an explicit protocol to achieve the optimal value. The protocol distinguishes between unital and nonunital channels and requires no loc…
In this work, a novel protocol is proposed for bidirectional controlled quantum teleportation (BCQT) in which a quantum channel is used with the eight-qubit entangled state. Using the protocol, two users can teleport an arbitrary entangled state and a pure two-qubit state (QBS) to each other simultaneously under the permission of a third party in the role of controller. This protocol is based on the controlled-not operation, appropriate single-qubit (SIQ) UOs and SIQ measurements in the Z and X-basis. Reduction of the predictability of the controller's qubit (QB) by the eavesdropper and also, …
We give a capacity formula for the classical information transmission over a noisy quantum channel, with separable encoding by the sender and limited resources provided by the receiver's pre-shared ancilla. Instead of a pure state, we consider the signal-ancilla pair in a mixed state, purified by a "witness". Thus, the signal-witness correlation limits the resource available from the signal-ancilla correlation. Our formula characterizes the utility of different forms of resources, including noisy or limited entanglement assistance, for classical communication. With separable encoding, the send…
We report experimental results on the action of selected local environments on the fidelity of the quantum teleportation protocol, taking into account non-ideal, realistic entangled resources. Different working conditions are theoretically identified, where a noisy protocol can be made almost insensitive to further addition of noise. We put to test these conditions on a photonic implementation of the quantum teleportation algorithm, where two polarization entangled qubits act as the entangled resource and a path qubit on Alice encodes the state to be teleported. Bob's path qubit is used to imp…

We consider frequency estimation in a noisy environment with noisy probes. This builds on previous studies, most of which assume that the initial probe state is pure, while the encoding process is noisy, or that the initial probe state is mixed, while the encoding process is noiseless. Our work is more representative of reality, where noise is unavoidable in both the initial state of the probe and the estimation process itself. We prepare the probe in a GHZ diagonal state, starting from $n+1$ qubits in an arbitrary uncorrelated mixed state, and subject it to parameter encoding under dephasing …
We address the distribution of quantum information among many parties in the presence of noise. In particular, we consider how to optimally send to m receivers the information encoded into an unknown coherent state. On one hand, a local strategy is considered, consisting in a local cloning process followed by direct transmission. On the other hand, a telecloning protocol based on nonlocal quantum correlations is analyzed. Both the strategies are optimized to minimize the detrimental effects due to losses and thermal noise along the propagation. The comparison between the local and the nonlocal…
Cryptographic protocols are the backbone of our information society. This includes two-party protocols which offer protection against distrustful players. Such protocols can be built from a basic primitive called oblivious transfer. We present and experimentally demonstrate here the first quantum protocol for oblivious transfer for optical continuous-variable systems, and prove its security in the noisy-storage model. This model allows to establish security by sending more quantum signals than an attacker can reliably store during the protocol. The security proof is based on new uncertainty re…
Multiple-copy state discrimination is a fundamental task in quantum information processing. If there are two, pure, non-orthogonal states then both local and collective schemes are known to reach the Helstrom bound, the maximum probability of successful discrimination allowed by quantum theory. For mixed states, it is known that only collective schemes can perform optimally, so it might be expected that these schemes are more resilient to preparation noise. We calculate the probability of success for two schemes, one local and one collective, in the regime of imperfect preparation fidelity. We…
Summary. A simple derivation of finite Schmidt decomposition of pure states describing finite dimensional systems interacting with the infinite dimensional ones is presented. In particular, maximally entangled pure states in such systems are being characterized. The concept of mixed-pure states has been introduced and some criterions for checking separability and entanglement of them are presented .The notion of LOCC equivalence and LOCC semi-order on the space of pure states of systems analyzed has been adopted suitably. In particular a Nielsen -like theorem has been extended to the pure (d, …
The quantization of 2-players N-strategies games is considered. The general form of gate operator is determined under the assumption that the classical pure strategies are contained in the set of pure quantum ones.
We address security of the quantum key distribution scheme based on the noisy modulation of coherent states and investigate how it is robust against noise in the modulation regardless of the particular technical implementation. As the trusted preparation noise is shown to be security breaking even for purely lossy channels, we reveal the essential difference between two types of trusted noise, namely sender-side preparation noise and receiver-side detection noise, the latter being security preserving. We consider the method of sender-side state purification to compensate the preparation noise …
We analyse the use of entangled states to perform quantum computations non locally among distant nodes in a quantum network. The complexity associated with the generation of multiparticle entangled states is quantified in terms of the concept of global cost. This parameter allows us to compare the use of physical resources in different schemes. We show that for ideal channels and for a sufficiently large number of nodes, the use of maximally entangled states is advantageous over uncorrelated ones. For noisy channels, one has to use entanglement purification procedures in order to create entang…
Purifying noisy entanglement is a protocol which can increase the entanglement of a mixed state (as a source)at expense of the entanglement of others(as an ancilla)by collective measurement. A protocol with which one can get a pure entangled state from a mixed state is defined as purifying mixed states. We address a basic question: can one get a pure entangled state from a mixed state? We give a necessary and sufficient condition of purifying a mixed state by fit local operations and classical communication and show that for a class of source states and ancilla states in arbitrary bipartite sy…
Exact and approximate formulas for the upper bound of the relative energy difference of two Gaussian states with the fixed fidelity between them are derived. The reciprocal formulas for the upper bound of the fidelity for the fixed value of the relative energy difference are obtained as well. The bounds appear higher for pure states than for mixed ones, and their maximal values correspond to squeezed vacuum states. In particular, to guarantee the relative energy difference less than 10%, for quite arbitrary Gaussian states, the fidelity between them must exceed the level 0.998866.
Simultaneous decompositions of a pair of states into pure ones are examined. There are privileged decompositions which are distinguished from all the other ones.
The Hamiltonian approach can be used successfully to study the real-time evolution of a non-Abelian lattice gauge theory on the available noisy quantum computers. In this work, results from the real-time evolution of SU(2) pure gauge theory on IBM hardware are presented. The long real-time evolution spanning dozens of Trotter steps with hundreds of CNOT gates and the observation of a traveling excitation on the lattice were made possible by using a collection of error mitigation techniques. Self-mitigation is our novel tool, which consists of using the same physics circuit as a noise-mitigatio…
