The zero-range potential is customarily employed in various mean-field calculations of many-body systems in atomic and nuclear physics within, correspondingly, Gross-Pitaevskii and Skyrme-Hartree-Fock approach. We argue, however, that a many-body system with zero-range potentials is unstable against clusterization into collapsed three-body subsystems. We show that neither the density dependence of the potential nor an additional repulsive three-body potential can prevent this unexpected correlational collapse if the potentials are of zero range. Therefore the zero-range potential can only be used in many-body calculations where all three-body correlations are explicitly excluded.
The purpose of this paper is to explore the possibility of a wave-packet collapse induced by topological disconnectivity, based on the discussions of the wave-corpuscle duality. Several experimental suggestions are proposed to test this sort of wave-packet collapse based on quantum interference.
We discuss a model where a spontaneous quantum collapse is induced by the gravitational interaction, treated classically. Its dynamics couples the standard wave function of a system with the Bohmian positions of its particles, which are considered as the only source of the gravitational attraction. The collapse is obtained by adding a small imaginary component to the gravitational coupling. It predicts extremely small perturbations of microscopic systems, but very fast collapse of QSMDS (quantum superpositions of macroscopically distinct quantum states) of a solid object, varying as the fifth …
It is shown that the Diósi-Penrose criterion of gravity-induced quantum collapse may be inconsistent with the discreteness of space-time, which is generally considered as an indispensable element in a complete theory of quantum gravity. Moreover, the analysis also suggests that the discreteness of space-time may result in rapider collapse of the superposition of energy eigenstates than required by the Diósi-Penrose criterion.
Starting from an idea of S.L. Adler~\cite{Adler2015}, we develop a novel model of gravity-induced spontaneous wave-function collapse. The collapse is driven by complex stochastic fluctuations of the spacetime metric. After deriving the fundamental equations, we prove the collapse and amplification mechanism, the two most important features of a consistent collapse model. Under reasonable simplifying assumptions, we constrain the strength $ξ$ of the complex metric fluctuations with available experimental data. We show that $ξ\geq 10^{-26}$ in order for the model to guarantee classicality of mac…
We show how the ro-translational motion of anisotropic particles is affected by the model of Continuous Spontaneous Localization (CSL), the most prominent hypothetical modification of the Schrödinger equation restoring realism on the macroscale. We derive the master equation describing collapse-induced spatio-orientational decoherence, and demonstrate how it leads to linear- and angular-momentum diffusion. Since the associated heating rates scale differently with the CSL parameters, the latter can be determined individually by measuring the random motion of a single levitated nanorotor.
Almost a century after the development of quantum mechanics, we still do not have a consensus on the process of collapse of wavefunctions. Some theories require the intervention of a conscious observer while some see it as a stochastic process, and most theories violate energy conservation. In this paper we hypothesise that the collapse of wavefunctions can be caused by interactions with other objects (macroscopic or microscopic) and energy is conserved in that process. To test various hypotheses regarding collapse of wavefunctions, we propose a model system which is the quantum analogue of a …
I impose the Newtonian criteria of inertial frames on the c.o.m. trajectories of massive objects undergoing spontaneous collapse of their wave function. The corresponding modification of the so far used stochastic Schrödinger equation eliminates the Brownian motion of the c.o.m., restores the exact inertial motion for free masses. For the collapse of Schrödinger cat states the Born rule is satisfied invariably. The proposed machinery comes from the radical assumption that, in the vicinity of the spontaneously localized mass, the stochastic fluctuations of the c.o.m. ---inevitable in the collap…
We present a novel spontaneous collapse model where size is no longer the property of a physical system which determines its rate of collapse. Instead, we argue that the rate of spontaneous localization should depend on a system's quantum Integrated Information (QII), a novel physical property which describes a system's capacity to act like a quantum observer. We introduce quantum Integrated Information, present our QII collapse model and briefly explain how it may be experimentally tested against quantum theory.
A relativistic version of the Schr{ö}dinger-Newton equation is analyzed within the recently proposed Grave de Peralta approach [L. Grave de Peralta, {\em Results Phys.} {\bf 18} (2020) 103318], which include relativistic effects by a parametrization of the non-relativistic hamiltonian, so as to impose that the average kinetic energy of the system coincide with its relativistic kinetic energy. The reliability of this method is tested for the particle in a box. By applying this method to the Schr{ö}dinger-Newton equation we shows that the characteristic length of the model [L. Di{ó}si, {\em Phys…
We report on a Bell experiment with space-like separation assuming that the measurement time is related to gravity-induced state reduction. Two energy-time entangled photons are sent through optical fibers and directed into unbalanced interferometers at two receiving stations separated by 18 km. At each station, the detection of a photon triggers the displacement of a macroscopic mass. The timing ensures space-like separation from the moment a photon enters its interferometer until the mass has moved. 2-photon interference fringes with a visibility of up to 90.5% are obtained, leading to a vio…
We propose a reinterpretation and reformulation of the single-particle Green's function in nonrelativistic quantum many-body theory with an emphasis on normalization. By downfolding a correlation function covering all of Fock space into the observable portion, we derive a nonlocal Dyson equation which depends on an unknown downfolding frequency. The downfolding frequency is determined by solving the inverse problem so that the spectral function of the single-particle propagator is a Dirac-$δ$ function. Upon measurement, the system collapses stochastically onto one of these normalized solutions…
Because quantum measurements have probabilistic outcomes they can seem to violate conservation laws in individual experiments. Despite these appearances, strict conservation of momentum, orbital angular momentum, and energy can be shown to be consistent with the assumption that the entangling interactions that constitute measurements induce a real collapse of the wave function. The essential idea is that measured systems always have some pre-existing entanglement relations with (usually larger) systems, and that apparent changes in conserved quantities in the measured system are correlated wit…
Several versions of quantum theory assume some form of localized collapse. If measurement outcomes are indeed defined by localized collapses, then a loophole-free demonstration of Bell non-locality needs to ensure space-like separated collapses associated with the measurements of the entangled systems. This collapse locality loophole remains largely untested, with one significant exception probing Diosi's and Penrose's gravitationally induced collapse hypotheses. I describe here techniques that allow much stronger experimental tests. These apply to all the well known types of collapse postulat…
We study the effect of a many-body interaction on inter-band oscillations in a two-band Bose-Hubbard model with external Stark force. Weak and strong inter-band oscillations are observed, where the latter arise from a resonant coupling of the bands. These oscillations collapse and revive due to a weak two-body interaction between the atoms. Effective models for oscillations in and out of resonance are introduced that provide predictions for the system's behaviour, particularly for the time-scales for the collapse and revival of the resonant inter-band oscillations.
We investigate the decoherence of Er$^{3+}$ in Y$_2$SiO$_5$ at low magnetic fields using the photon-echo technique. We reproduce accurately a variety of the decay curves with a unique coherence time by considering the so-called superhyperfine modulation induced by a large number of neighbouring spins. There is no need to invoke any characteristic time of the spin fluctuations to reproduce very different decay curves. The number of involved nuclei increases when the magnetic is lowered. The experiment is compared with a model associating 100 surrounding ions with their exact positions in the cr…
A gravity-induced approach to wavefunction collapse based on semiclassical gravity is enhanced by the hypothesis of a temporally expanding spacetime, which leads to a collapse model that can resolve the conflict between quantum nonlocality and relativity. It is postulated that the spacetime region on which the evolution of the state vector exists is bounded towards the future by a border that is dynamically moving towards the future, and at which the state vector must fulfil a boundary condition. Wavefunction collapse is represented in such a way that the evolution of the state vector changes …
The presence of quantum scars, athermal eigenstates of a many-body Hamiltonian with finite energy density, leads to absence of ergodicity and long-time coherent dynamics in closed quantum systems starting from simple initial states. Such non-ergodic coherent dynamics, where the system does not explore its entire phase space, has been experimentally observed in a chain of ultracold Rydberg atoms. We show, via study of a periodically driven Rydberg chain, that the drive frequency acts as a tuning parameter for several reentrant transitions between ergodic and non-ergodic regimes. The former regi…

This proposes a new theory of Quantum measurement; a state reduction theory in which reduction is to the elements of the number operator basis of a system, triggered by the occurrence of annihilation or creation (or lowering or raising) operators in the time evolution of a system. It is from these operator types that the acronym `LARC' is derived. Reduction does not occur immediately after the trigger event; it occurs at some later time with probability $P_t$ per unit time, where $P_t$ is very small. Localisation of macroscopic objects occurs in the natural way: photons from an illumination fi…
Instability-induced random branching of deterministic dynamics is discussed as a possible mechanism of random wave function collapse. In the case of two level systems, the Born probability rule emerges as the simplest linear solution to the equation for measurement probabilities.
We investigate a Bose-Einstein condensate with additional long-range dipolar interaction in a cylindrically symmetric trap within a variational framework. Compared to the ground state of this system, little attention has as yet been payed to its unstable excited states. For thermal excitations, however, the latter is of great interest, because it forms the "activated complex" that mediates the collapse of the condensate. For a certain value of the s-wave scatting length our investigations reveal a bifurcation in the transition state, leading to the emergence of two additional and symmetry-brea…
Phase collapse and revival for Bose-Einstein condensates is a nonlinear phenomena appearing due atomic collisions. While it has been observed in a general setting involving many modes, for one-mode condensates its occurrence is forbidden by the particle number superselection rule (SSR), which arises because there is no phase reference available. We consider a single mode atomic Bose-Einstein condensate interacting with an off-resonant optical probe field. We show that the condensate phase revival time is dependent on the atom-light interaction, allowing optical control on the atomic collapse a…
Collapsing Bose-Einstein condensates are rich and complex quantum systems for which quantitative explanation by simple models has proved elusive. We present new experimental data on the collapse of high density Rb-85 condensates with attractive interactions and find quantitative agreement with the predictions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The collapse data and measurements of the decay of atoms from our condensates allow us to put new limits on the value of the Rb-85 three-body loss coefficient K_3 at small positive and negative scattering lengths.
A three dimensional attractive Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC) is expected to collapse, when the number of the particles $N$ in the ground state or the interaction strength $λ_0$ exceeds a critical value. We study systems of different particle numbers and interaction strength and find that even if the overall ground state is collapsed there is a plethora of fragmented excited states that are still in the metastable region. Utilizing the \emph{configuration interaction} expansion we determine the spectrum of the ground (`yrast') and excited many-body states with definite total angular momentum q…
We use a quasi Hamiltonian formalism to describe the dissipative dynamics of a circuit QED qubit that is affected by several fluctuating two level systems with a 1/f noise power spectrum. The qubit-resonator interactions are described by the Jaynes Cummings model. We argue that the presence of pure dephasing noise in such a qubit-resonator system will also induce an energy relaxation mechanism via a fluctuating dipole coupling term. This random modulation of the coupling is seen to lead to rich physical behavior. For non-Markovian noise, the coupling can either worsen or alleviate decoherence …
