In quantum information and communication, optical schemes provide simple and intuitive experimental implementations. Of particular importance is quantum state preparation. In this thesis, the creation of polarisation entanglement using a particular class of optical circuits is studied. I give a mathematical description of this class of circuits in terms of Hermite polynomials. In this context, single photon resolution and single photon sensitivity detectors are discussed and compared with detector cascading. In addition, I study applications of state preparation such as quantum teleportation and quantum lithography.
We propose a class of preparation schemes for orbital angular momentum and polarisation qubits carried by single photons or classical states of light based on coherent feedback control by an ancillary degree of freedom of light. The preparation methods use linear optics and include the transcription of an arbitrary polarisation state onto a two-level OAM system (swap) for arbitrary OAM values plus/minus "l" within a light beam, i.e. without spatial interferometer. The preparations can be carried out with unit efficiency independent from the potentially unknown initial state of the system. More…
Quantum state preparation is important for quantum information processing. In particular, in optical quantum computing with continuous variables, non-Gaussian states are needed for universal operation and error correction. Optical non-Gaussian states are usually generated by heralding schemes using photon detectors. In previous experiments, the temporal resolution of the photon detectors was sufficiently high relative to the time width of the quantum state, so that the conventional theory of non-Gaussian state preparation treated the detector's temporal resolution as negligible. However, when …
Arrays of neutral-atom qubits in optical tweezers are a promising platform for quantum computation. Despite experimental progress, a major roadblock for realizing neutral atom quantum computation is the qubit initialization. Here we propose that supersymmetry -- a theoretical framework developed in particle physics -- can be used for ultra-high fidelity initialization of neutral-atom qubits. We show that a single atom can be deterministically prepared in the vibrational ground state of an optical tweezer by adiabatically extracting all excited atoms to a supersymmetric auxiliary tweezer. The s…
Non-Gaussian states of an optical field are important as a proposed resource in quantum information applications. While conditional preparation is a highly successful approach to preparing such states, their quality is limited by detector non-idealities such as dead time, narrow dynamic range, limited quantum efficiency and dark noise. Mesoscopic photon counters, with peak performance at higher photon number, offer many practical advantages over single-photon level conditioning detectors. Here we propose a novel approach involving displacement of the ancilla field into the regime where mesosco…
State preparation is a process encoding the classical data into the quantum systems. Based on quantum phase estimation, we propose the specific quantum circuits for a deterministic state preparation algorithm and a probabilistic state preparation algorithm. To discuss the gate complexity in these algorithms, we decompose the diagonal unitary operators included in the phase estimation algorithms into the basic gates. Thus, we associate the state preparation problem with the decomposition problem of the diagonal unitary operators. We analyse the fidelities in the two algorithms and discuss the s…
The positivity of the partial transpose is in general only a necessary condition for separability. There exist quantum states that are not separable, but nevertheless are positive under partial transpose. States of this type are known as bound entangled states meaning that these states are entangled but they do not allow distillation of pure entanglement by means of local operations and classical communication (LOCC). We present a parametrization of a class of $2\times 2$ bound entangled Gaussian states for bipartite continuous-variable quantum systems with two modes on each side. We propose a…
In this paper we discuss a quantum multi-tasking protocol for preparation of known one-qubit and two-qubit states respectively in two different locations. The ideal remote state preparation protocol is discussed in the first place in which a five-qubit entangled state is utilized. The design for the preparation of such entanglement is also presented and run on IBM quantum composer platform. The effects of three types of noises on the protocol are discussed and in all these cases the reduced fidelities of the process are calculated. The variations of these fidelities with respect to different p…
Quantum Amplitude Estimation (QAE) can achieve a quadratic speed-up for applications classically solved by Monte Carlo simulation. A key requirement to realize this advantage is efficient state preparation. If state preparation is too expensive, it can diminish the quantum advantage. Preparing arbitrary quantum states has exponential complexity with respect to the number of qubits, thus, is not applicable. Currently known efficient techniques require problems based on log-concave probability distributions, involve learning an unknown distribution from empirical data, or fully rely on quantum a…
We prove that there is no quantum speed-up when using quantum Monte-Carlo to estimate the mean (and other moments) of analytically-defined log-concave probability distributions prepared as quantum states using the Grover-Rudolph method.
Shallow donors in ZnO are promising candidates for photon-mediated quantum technologies. Utilizing the indium donor, we show that favorable donor-bound exciton optical and electron spin properties are retained in isolated ZnO nanowires. The inhomogeneous optical linewidth of single nanowires (60 GHz) is within a factor of 2 of bulk single-crystalline ZnO. Spin initialization via optical pumping is demonstrated and coherent population trapping is observed. The two-photon absorption width approaches the theoretical limit expected due to the hyperfine interaction between the indium nuclear spin a…
Black-box quantum state preparation is an important subroutine in many quantum algorithms. The standard approach requires the quantum computer to do arithmetic, which is a key contributor to the complexity. Here we present a new algorithm that avoids arithmetic. We thereby reduce the number of gates by a factor of 286-374 over the best prior work for realistic precision; the improvement factor increases with the precision. As quantum state preparation is a crucial subroutine in many approaches to simulating physics on a quantum computer, our new method brings useful quantum simulation closer t…
State preparation and measurement errors are commonly regarded as indistinguishable. The problem of distinguishing state preparation (SPAM) errors from measurement errors is important to the field of characterizing quantum processors. In this work, we propose a method to separately characterize SPAM errors using a novel type of algorithmic cooling protocol called measurement-based algorithmic cooling (MBAC). MBAC assumes the ability to perform (potentially imperfect) projective measurements on individual qubits, which is available on many modern quantum processors. We demonstrate that MBAC can…
We propose a variational quantum algorithm to prepare ground states of 1D lattice quantum Hamiltonians specifically tailored for programmable quantum devices where interactions among qubits are mediated by Quantum Data Buses (QDB). For trapped ions with the axial Center-Of-Mass (COM) vibrational mode as single QDB, our scheme uses resonant sideband optical pulses as resource operations, which are potentially faster than off-resonant couplings and thus less prone to decoherence. The disentangling of the QDB from the qubits by the end of the state preparation comes as a byproduct of the variatio…
Black-box quantum state preparation is a fundamental primitive in quantum algorithms. Starting from Grover, a series of techniques have been devised to reduce the complexity. In this work, we propose to perform black-box state preparation using the technique of linear combination of unitaries (LCU). We provide two algorithms based on a different structure of LCU. Our algorithms improve upon the existed best results by reducing the required additional qubits and Toffoli gates to 2log(n) and n, respectively, in the bit precision n. We demonstrate the algorithms using the IBM Quantum Experience c…
We consider the optimal control problem in a two-qubit system with bounded amplitude. Two cases are studied: quantum state preparation and entanglement creation. Cost functions, fidelity and concurrence, are optimized over bang-off controls for different values of the total duration, respectively. For quantum state preparation problem, three critical time points are determined with high precision, and optimal controls are obtained for different durations. A better estimation of the quantum speed limit is obtained, so is the time-optimal control. For entanglement creation problem, two critical …
The preparation of a quantum superposition is the key to the success of many quantum algorithms and quantum machine learning techniques. The preparation of an incomplete or a non-uniform quantum superposition with certain properties is a non-trivial task. In this paper, an $n$-qubits variational quantum circuit using partial negation and controlled partial negation operators will be proposed to prepare an arbitrary quantum superposition. The proposed quantum circuit follows the symmetries of the unitary Lie group. The speed of the preparation process and the accuracy of the prepared superposit…
The preparation of Gibbs thermal states is an important task in quantum computation with applications in quantum simulation, quantum optimization, and quantum machine learning. However, many algorithms for preparing Gibbs states rely on quantum subroutines which are difficult to implement on near-term hardware. Here, we address this by (i) introducing an objective function that, unlike the free energy, is easily measured, and (ii) using dynamically generated, problem-tailored ansätze. This allows for arbitrarily accurate Gibbs state preparation using low-depth circuits. To verify the effective…
We estimate the resources required to prepare the ground state of a quantum many-body system on a quantum computer of intermediate size. This estimate is made possible using a combination of quantum many-body methods and analytic upper bounds. Our routine can also be used to optimize certain design parameters for specific problem instances. Lastly, we propose and benchmark an improved quantum state preparation procedure. We find that it reduces the circuit T-depth by a factor as large as $10^6$ for intermediate-size lattices.
We report a scheme for deterministic preparation of non-Gaussian quantum states on-demand. In contrast to probabilistic approaches for preparation of non-Gaussian quantum states, conditioned on photon subtraction or addition, we present a scheme that can prepare non-Gaussian quantum states on-demand, by applying a unitary transformation which removes the Gaussianity of measurement statistics of field quadratures, namely a quadrature rotation via transmission through a beam-splitter, using a two-mode photon-number squeezed state as input. The resulting state exhibits a quantum vortex structure …
