Wootters [Phys. Rev. Lett. 80, 2245 (1998)] has given an explicit formula for the entanglement of formation of two qubits in terms of what he calls the concurrence of the joint density operator. Wootters's concurrence is defined with the help of the superoperator that flips the spin of a qubit. We generalize the spin-flip superoperator to a "universal inverter," which acts on quantum systems of arbitrary dimension, and we introduce the corresponding concurrence for joint pure states of (D1 X D2) bipartite quantum systems. The universal inverter, which is a positive, but not completely positive superoperator, is closely related to the completely positive universal-NOT superoperator, the quantum analogue of a classical NOT gate. We present a physical realization of the universal-NOT superoperator.
Entanglement and coherence are two essential quantum resources for quantum information processing. A natural question arises of whether there are direct link between them. And by thinking about this question, we propose a new measure for quantum state that contains concurrence and is called intrinsic concurrence. Interestingly, we discover that the intrinsic concurrence is always complementary to coherence. Note that the intrinsic concurrence is related to the concurrence of a special pure state ensemble. In order to explain the trade-off relation more intuitively, we apply it in some composit…
We propose and examine several candidates for universal multipartite entanglement measures. The most promising candidate for applications needing entanglement in the full Hilbert space is the ent-concurrence, which detects all entanglement correlations while distinguishing between different types of distinctly multipartite entanglement, and simplifies to the concurrence for two-qubit mixed states. For applications where subsystems need internal entanglement, we develop the absolute ent-concurrence which detects the entanglement in the reduced states as well as the full state.
We demonstrate that for every two-qubit state there is a X-counterpart, i.e., a corresponding two-qubit X-state of same spectrum and entanglement, as measured by concurrence, negativity or relative entropy of entanglement. By parametrizing the set of two-qubit X-states and a family of unitary transformations that preserve the sparse structure of a two-qubit X-state density matrix, we obtain the parametric form of a unitary transformation that converts arbitrary two-qubit states into their X-counterparts. Moreover, we provide a semi-analytic prescription on how to set the parameters of this uni…
Concurrence, introduced by Hill and Wootters [Phys. Rev. Lett. 78, 5022 (1997)], provides an important measure of entanglement for a general pair of qubits that is faithful: strictly positive for entangled states and vanishing for all separable states. Such a measure captures the entire content of entanglement, providing necessary and sufficient conditions for separability. We present an extension of concurrence to multiparticle pure states in arbitrary dimensions by a new framework using the Lagrange's identity and wedge product representation of separability conditions, which coincides with …
We introduce universal broadband composite pulse sequences for robust high-fidelity population inversion in two-state quantum systems, which compensate deviations in any experimental parameter (e.g. pulse amplitude, pulse duration, detuning from resonance, Stark shifts, unwanted frequency chirp, etc.) and are applicable with any pulse shape. We demonstrate the efficiency and universality of these composite pulses by experimental data on rephasing of atomic coherences in a $\text{Pr}^{3+}\text{:}\text{Y}_2\text{SiO}_5$ crystal.
We consider the entanglement manipulation capabilities of the universal covariant quantum cloner or quantum processor circuit for quantum bits. We investigate its use for cloning a member of a bipartite or a genuine tripartite entangled state of quantum bits. We find that for bipartite pure entangled states a nontrivial behavior of concurrence appears, while for GHZ entangled states a possibility of the partial extraction of bipartite entanglement can be achieved.
We construct nonlinear multiparty entanglement measures for distinguishable particles, bosons and fermions. In each case properties of an entanglement measures are related to the decomposition of the suitably chosen representation of the relevant symmetry group onto irreducible components. In the case of distinguishable particles considered entanglement measure reduces to the well-known many particle concurrence. We prove that our entanglement criterion is sufficient and necessary for pure states living in both finite and infinite dimensional spaces. We generalize our entanglement measures to …
We introduce a method to rotate arbitrarily the excitation profile of universal broadband composite pulse sequences for robust high-fidelity population inversion. These pulses compensate deviations in any experimental parameter (e.g. pulse amplitude, pulse duration, detuning from resonance, Stark shifts, unwanted frequency chirp, etc.) and are applicable with any pulse shape. The rotation allows to achieve higher order robustness to any combination of pulse area and detuning errors at no additional cost. The latter can be particularly useful, e.g., when detuning errors are due to Stark shifts …
The quantum concurrence of $SU(2) \otimes SU(2)$ spin-parity states is shown to be invariant under $SO(1,3)$ Lorentz boosts and $O(3)$ rotations when the density matrices are constructed in consonance with the covariant probabilistic distribution of Dirac massive particles. Similar invariance properties are obtained for the quantum purity and for the trace of unipotent density matrix operators. The reported invariance features -- obtained in the scope of the $SU(2) \otimes SU(2)$ corresponding to just one of the inequivalent representations enclosed by the $SL(2,\mathbb{C})\otimes SL(2,\mathbb…
We explore the spontaneous generation and decay of quantum correlations between two identical atoms coupled to a common Markovian environment in the presence of electromagnetic field modes. For this purpose, we analyze the dynamics of quantum correlations by employing the concurrence, the trace quantum discord and the local quantum uncertainty, for collective Dicke states. It is shown that the collective damping and dipole-dipole interaction plays a key role in enhancing non-classical correlations during the process of intrinsic decoherence. The quantum correlations can be maintained over a lo…
We show that universal quantum computation can be achieved in the standard pure-state circuit model while, at any time, the entanglement entropy of all bipartitions is small---even tending to zero with growing system size. The result is obtained by showing that a quantum computer operating within a small region around the set of unentangled states still has universal computational power, and by using continuity of entanglement entropy. In fact an analogous conclusion applies to every entanglement measure which is continuous in a certain natural sense, which amounts to a large class. Other exam…
A complex conjugation of unitary quantum map is a second-order map (supermap) that maps a unitary operator $U$ to its complex conjugate $U^*$. First, we present a deterministic quantum protocol that universally implements the complex conjugation supermap when we are given a blackbox quantum circuit, guaranteed to implement some unitary operation, whose only known description is its dimension. We then discuss the complex conjugation supermap in the context of entanglement theory and derive a conjugation-based expression of the $G$-concurrence. Finally, we present a physical process involving id…
Isometry operations encode the quantum information of the input system to a larger output system, while the corresponding decoding operation would be an inverse operation of the encoding isometry operation. Given an encoding operation as a black box from a $d$-dimensional system to a $D$-dimensional system, we propose a universal protocol for isometry inversion that constructs a decoder from multiple calls of the encoding operation. This is a probabilistic but exact protocol whose success probability is independent of $D$. For a qubit ($d=2$) encoded in $n$ qubits, our protocol achieves an exp…
Establishing long-distance quantum entanglement, i.e., entanglement transmission, in quantum networks (QN) is a key and timely challenge for developing efficient quantum communication. Traditional comprehension based on classical percolation assumes a necessary condition for successful entanglement transmission between any two infinitely distant nodes: they must be connected by at least a path of perfectly entangled states (singlets). Here, we relax this condition by explicitly showing that one can focus not on optimally converting singlets but on establishing concurrence -- a key measure of b…
We construct a single observable measurement of which mean value on four copies of an {\it unknown} two-qubit state is sufficient for unambiguous decision whether the state is separable or entangled. In other words, there exists a universal collective entanglement witness detecting all two-qubit entanglement. The test is directly linked to a function which characterizes to some extent the entanglement quantitatively. This function is an entanglement monotone under so--called local pure operations and classical communication (pLOCC) which preserve local dimensions. Moreover it provides tight up…
We discuss the thermal entanglement close to a quantum phase transition by analyzing the concurrence for one dimensional models in the quantum Ising universality class. We demonstrate that the entanglement sensitivity to thermal and to quantum fluctuations obeys universal $T\neq 0$--scaling behaviour. We show that the entanglement, together with its criticality, exhibits a peculiar universal crossover behaviour.
It has recently been shown theoretically that elastic scattering in the Fermi sea produces quantum mechanically entangled states. The mechanism is similar to entanglement by a beam splitter in optics, but a key distinction is that the electronic mechanism works even if the source is in local thermal equilibrium. An experimental realization was proposed using tunneling between two edge channels in a strong magnetic field. Here we investigate a low-magnetic field alternative, using multiple scattering in a quantum dot. Two pairs of single-channel point contacts define a pair of qubits. If the sc…
Braid theories are applied to quantum computation processes, where to each crossing in the Braid diagram a unitary Yang-Baxter operator R is associated, representing either a Braiding matrix or a universal quantum gate. By operating with Braid operators on the computational basis of n-QUBITS states, orthonormal entangled states are obtained, referred here as general Bell states. The 3-QUBITS Bell states are explicitly developed and the present methods are generalized to any n-QUBITS system. The quantum properties of the general Bell states are analyzed and these properties are related to concu…
Dissipation can be used as a resource to control and simulate quantum systems. We discuss a modular model based on fast dissipation capable of performing universal quantum computation, and simulating arbitrary Lindbladian dynamics. The model consists of a network of elementary dissipation-generated modules and it is in principle scalable. In particular, we demonstrate the ability to dissipatively prepare all single qubit gates, and the CNOT gate; prerequisites for universal quantum computing. We also show a way to implement a type of quantum memory in a dissipative environment, whereby we can …
Strong numerical evidence is presented suggesting that all two-qubit mixed states are equivalent to X states by a single entanglement-preserving unitary (EPU) transformation, so that the concurrence of such an X state equals that of the original general state. An X-state parameterization of a general two-qubit state is given, allowing all states to have their concurrence parametrically specified. A new kind of entanglement measure is proposed, relating a general state's entanglement to that of a pure state in the same system. New states called "H States" are presented, having fully parametric …

Motivated by recent development in quantum entanglement, we study relations among concurrence $C$, SU$_q$(2) algebra, quantum phase transition and correlation length at the zero temperature for the XXZ chain. We find that at the SU(2) point, the ground state possess the maximum concurrence. When the anisotropic parameter $Δ$ is deformed, however, its value decreases. Its dependence on $Δ$ scales as $C=C_0-C_1(Δ-1)^2$ in the XY metallic phase and near the critical point (i.e. $1<Δ<1.3$) of the Ising-like insulating phase. We also study the dependence of $C$ on the correlation length $ξ$, and sh…
We show that the quantum phase transition arising in a standard radiation-matter model (Dicke model) belongs to the same universality class as the infinitely-coordinated, transverse field XY model. The effective qubit-qubit exchange interaction is shown to be proportional to the square of the qubit-radiation coupling. A universal finite-size scaling is derived for the corresponding two-qubit entanglement (concurrence) and a size-consistent effective Hamiltonian is proposed for the qubit subsystem.
Systems of linear equations are employed almost universally across a wide range of disciplines, from physics and engineering to biology, chemistry and statistics. Traditional solution methods such as Gaussian elimination become very time consuming for large matrices, and more efficient computational methods are desired. In the twilight of Moore's Law, quantum computing is perhaps the most direct path out of the darkness. There are two complementary paradigms for quantum computing, namely, gated systems and quantum annealers. In this paper, we express floating point operations such as division …
The construction of two-qubit gates appropriate for universal quantum computation is of enormous importance to quantum information processing. Building such gates is dependent on accurate knowledge of the interaction dynamics between two qubit systems. This letter will present a systematic method for reconstructing the full two-qubit interaction Hamiltonian through experimental measures of concurrence. This not only gives a convenient method for constructing two qubit quantum gates, but can also be used to experimentally determine various Hamiltonian parameters in physical systems. We show exp…
Cavity quantum electrodynamics of multipartite systems is studied in depth, which consist of an arbitrary number of emitters in interaction with an arbitrary number of cavity modes. The governing model is obtained by taking the full field-dipole and dipole-dipole interactions into account, and is solved in the Schrödinger picture without assumption of any further approximation. An extensive code is developed which is able to accurately solve the system and track its evolution with high precision in time, while maintaining sufficient degrees of arbitrariness in setting up the initial conditions…
This paper addresses the problem of designing universal quantum circuits to transform $k$ uses of a $d$-dimensional unitary input-operation into a unitary output-operation in a probabilistic heralded manner. Three classes of protocols are considered, parallel circuits, where the input-operations can be simultaneously, adaptive circuits, where sequential uses of the input-operations are allowed, and general protocols, where the use of the input-operations may be performed without a definite causal order. For these three classes, we develop a systematic semidefinite programming approach that fin…
We study the two-qubit Rabi model in the most general case where the qubits are different from each other. The spectrum of the system in the ultrastrong-coupling regime is shown to converge to two forced oscillator chains by perturbation theory. An even and odd decomposition of the Hilbert space allows us to calculate the spectra in any given parameter regime; the cases studied confirm our perturbation theory prediction in the ultrastrong-coupling regime and point to crossings in the spectra within each parity subspace in the moderate-coupling regime. The normal modes of the system are calcula…
Given two arbitrary pure states $ |ϕ>$ and $ |ψ>$ of qubits or higher level states, we provide arguments in favor of states of the form $ \frac{1}{\sqrt{2}}(|ψ> |ϕ> + i |ϕ> |ψ>) $ instead of symmetric or anti-symmetric states, as natural candidates for optimally entangled states constructed from these states. We show that such states firstly have on the average a high value of concurrence, secondly can be constructed by a universal unitary operator independent of the input states. We also show that these states are the only ones which can be produced with perfect fidelity by any quantum operat…
The controlled generation of entangled states of two quantum bits is a fundamental step toward the implementation of a quantum information processor. In nano-devices this operation is counteracted by the solid-state environment, characterized by a broadband and non-monotonic power spectrum, often 1/f at low frequencies. For single-qubit gates, incoherent processes due to fluctuations acting on different time scales result in peculiar short- and long-time behavior. Markovian noise gives rise to exponential decay with relaxation and decoherence times, T1 and T2, simply related to the symmetry of…
The problem of the relationship between entanglement and two-qubit systems in which it is embedded is central to the quantum information theory. This paper suggests that the concurrence hierarchy as an entanglement measure provides an alternative view of how to think about this problem. We consider mixed states of two qubits and obtain an exact solution of the time-dependent master equation that describes the evolution of two two-level qubits (or atoms) within a perfect cavity for the case of multiphoton transition. We consider the situation for which the field may start from a binomial state.…
We introduce quantum Markov categories as a structure that refines and extends a synthetic approach to probability theory and information theory so that it includes quantum probability and quantum information theory. In this broader context, we analyze three successively more general notions of reversibility and statistical inference: ordinary inverses, disintegrations, and Bayesian inverses. We prove that each one is a strictly special instance of the latter for certain subcategories, providing a categorical foundation for Bayesian inversion as a generalization of reversing a process. We unif…
Quantum coherence and quantum correlations are studied in the strongly interacting system composed of two qubits and an oscillator with the presence of a parametric medium. To analytically solve the system, we employ the adiabatic approximation approach. It assumes each qubit's characteristic frequency is substantially lower than the oscillator frequency. To validate our approximation, a good agreement between the calculated energy spectrum of the Hamiltonian with its numerical result is presented. The time evolution of the reduced density matrices of the two-qubit and the oscillator subsystem…
Given a quantum gate implementing a $d$-dimensional unitary operation $U_d$, without any specific description but $d$, and permitted to use $k$ times, we present a universal probabilistic heralded quantum circuit that implements the exact inverse $U_d^{-1}$, whose failure probability decays, exponentially in $k$. The protocol employs an adaptive strategy, proven necessary for the exponential performance. It requires $k\geq d-1$, proven necessary for exact implementation of $U_d^{-1}$ with quantum circuits. Moreover, even when quantum circuits with indefinite causal order are allowed, $k\geq d-…

How to characterize topological quantum phases is a fundamental issue in the broad field of topological matter. From a dimension reduction approach, we propose the concept of high-order band inversion surfaces (BISs) which enable the optimal schemes to characterize equilibrium topological phases by far-from-equilibrium quantum dynamics, and further report the experimental simulation. We show that characterization of a d-dimensional (dD) topological phase can be reduced to lower-dimensional topological invariants in the high-order BISs, of which the nth-order BIS is a (d-n)D interface in moment…
