We demonstrate that it is possible to use the balanced homodyning with array detectors to measure the quantum state of correlated two-mode signal field. We show the applicability of the method to fields with complex mode functions, thus generalizing the work of Beck (Phys. Rev. Letts. 84, 5748 (2000)) in several important ways. We further establish that, under suitable conditions, array detector measurements from one of the two outputs is sufficient to determine the quantum state of signals. We show the power of the method by reconstructing a truncated Perelomov state which exhibits complicated structure in the joint probability density for the quadratures.
For one-mode and multimode light, the photon-number tomograms of Gaussian quantum states are explicitly calculated in terms of multivariable Hermite polynomials. Positivity of the tomograms is shown to be necessary condition for positivity of the density matrix.
We derive various sampling functions for multimode homodyne tomography with a single local oscillator. These functions allow us to sample multimode s-parametrized quasidistributions, density matrix elements in Fock basis, and s-ordered moments of arbitrary order directly from the measured quadrature statistics. The inevitable experimental losses can be compensated by proper modification of the sampling functions. Results of Monte Carlo simulations for squeezed three-mode state are reported and the feasibility of reconstruction of the three-mode Q-function and s-ordered moments from 10^7 sample…
Tomographic probability representation of multimode electromagnetic field states in the scheme of center-of-mass tomography is reviewed. Both connection of the field state Wigner function and observable Weyl symbols with the center-of-mass tomograms as well as connection of Grönewold kernel with the center-of-mass tomographic kernel determining the noncommutative product of the tomograms are obtained. The dual center-of-mass tomogram of the photon states are constructed and the dual tomographic kernel is obtained. The models of other generalised center-of-mass tomographies are discussed. Examp…
The systems with multimode nonstationary Hamiltonians quadratic in position and momentum operators are reviewed. The tomographic probability distributions (tomograms) for the Fock states and Gaussian states of the quadratic systems are discussed. The tomograms for the Fock states are expressed in terms of multivariable Hermite polynomials. Using the obvious physical relations some new formulas for multivariable Hermite polynomials are found. Examples of oscillator and charge moving in electromagnetic field are presented.
We measure the joint Q-function of a multi-spatial-mode field using a charge-coupled device array detector in an unbalanced heterodyne configuration. The intensity pattern formed by interference between a weak signal field and a strong local oscillator is resolved using Fourier analysis and used to reconstruct quadrature amplitude statistics for 22 spatial modes simultaneously. The local oscillator and signal propagate at an angle of 12 mrad thus shifting the classical noise to modes that do not overlap with the signal. In this configuration, balanced detection is not necessary.
We report a technique for experimental characterization of an $M$-mode quantum optical process, generalizing the single-mode coherent-state quantum-process tomography method [M. Lobino et al., Science 322, 563 (2008); A. Anis and A.I. Lvovsky, New J. Phys. 14, 105021 (2012)]. By measuring effect of the process on multi-mode coherent states via balanced homodyne tomography, we obtain the process tensor in the Fock basis. This rank-$4M$ tensor, which predicts the effect of the process on an arbitrary density matrix, is iteratively reconstructed directly from the experimental data via the maximum…
We present a scheme for generating and manipulating three-mode squeezed states with genuine tripartite entanglement by injecting single-mode squeezed light into an array of coupled optical waveguides. We explore the possibility to selectively generate single-mode squeezing or multimode squeezing at the output of an elliptical waveguides array, determined solely by the input light polarization. We study the effect of losses in the waveguides array and show that quantum correlations and squeezing are preserved for realistic parameters. Our results show that arrays of optical waveguides are suita…
The characterization of quantum features in large Hilbert spaces is a crucial requirement for testing quantum protocols. In the continuous variables encoding, quantum homodyne tomography requires an amount of measurements that increases exponentially with the number of involved modes, which practically makes the protocol intractable even with few modes. Here we introduce a new technique, based on a machine learning protocol with artificial Neural Networks, that allows to directly detect negativity of the Wigner function for multimode quantum states. We test the procedure on a whole class of nu…
We propose a general method for measuring an arbitrary observable of a multimode electromagnetic field using homodyne detection with a single local oscillator. In this method the local oscillator scans over all possible linear combinations of the modes. The case of two modes is analyzed in detail and the feasibility of the measurement is studied on the basis of Monte-Carlo simulations. We also provide an application of this method in tomographic testing of the GHZ state.
The tomographic map of quantum state of a system with several degrees of freedom which depends on one random variable, analogous to center of mass considered in rotated and scaled reference frame in the phase space, is constructed. Time evolution equation of the tomogram for this map is given in explicit form. Properties of the map like the transition probabilities between the different states and relation to the star product formalism are elucidated. Example of multimode oscillator is considered in details. Symmetry properties in respect to identical particles permutations are discussed in th…
Broadband multimode squeezers constitute a powerful quantum resource with promising potential for different applications in quantum information technologies such as information coding in quantum communication networks or quantum simulations in higher dimensional systems. However, the characterization of a large array of squeezers that coexist in a single spatial mode is challenging. In this paper we address this problem and propose a straightforward method to determine the number of squeezers and their respective squeezing strengths by using broadband multimode correlation function measurement…
Recently, we have showed a mechanism that could provide a great transmission enhancement of the light waves passed through subwavelength aperture arrays in thin metal films not by the plasmon-polariton waves, but by the constructive interference of diffracted waves (beams generated by the apertures) at the detector placed in the far-field zone. We now present a quantum reformulation of the model. The Hamiltonian describing the interference-induced enhancement of the intensity and energy of a multimode quantum optical field is derived. Such a field can be produced, for instance, by a subwavelen…
We review experimental work on the measurement of the quantum state of optical fields, and the relevant theoretical background. The basic technique of optical homodyne tomography is described with particular attention paid to the role played by balanced homodyne detection in this process. We discuss some of the original single-mode squeezed-state measurements as well as recent developments including: other field states, multimode measurements, array detection, and other new homodyne schemes. We also discuss applications of state measurement techniques to an area of scientific and technological…
A central task in quantum information processing is to characterize quantum processes. In the realm of optical quantum information processing, this amounts to characterizing the transformations of the mode creation and annihilation operators. This transformation is unitary for linear optical systems, whereas these yield the well-known Bogoliubov transformations for systems with Hamiltonians that are quadratic in the mode operators. In this paper, we show that a modified Mach-Zehnder interferometer can characterize both these kinds of evolutions for multimode systems. While it suffices to use c…
We study a driven-dissipative array of coupled nonlinear optical resonators by numerically solving the Von Neumann equation for the density matrix. We demonstrate that quantum correlated states of many photons can be generated also in the limit where the nonlinearity is much smaller than the losses, contrarily to common expectations. Quantum correlations in this case arise from interference between different pathways that the system can follow in the Hilbert space to reach its steady state under the effect of coherent driving fields. We characterize in particular two systems: a linear chain of…
An arbitrary quantum-optical process (channel) can be completely characterized by probing it with coherent states using the recently developed coherent-state quantum process tomography (QPT) [Lobino et al., Science 322, 563 (2008)]. In general, precise QPT is possible if an infinite set of probes is available. Thus, realistic QPT of infinite-dimensional systems is approximate due to a finite experimentally-feasible set of coherent states and its related energy-cut-off approximation. We show with explicit formulas that one can completely identify a quantum-optical Gaussian process just with a f…
Coherent and reversible storage of multi-photon entanglement with a multimode quantum memory is essential for scalable all-optical quantum information processing. Although single photon has been successfully stored in different quantum systems, storage of multi-photon entanglement remains challenging because of the critical requirement for coherent control of photonic entanglement source, multimode quantum memory, and quantum interface between them. Here we demonstrate a coherent and reversible storage of biphoton Bell-type entanglement with a holographic multimode atomic-ensemble-based quantu…

Single-photon subtraction plays important roles in optical quantum information processing as it provides a non-Gaussian characteristic in continuous-variable quantum information. While the conventional way of implementing single-photon subtraction based on a low-reflectance beam splitter works properly for a single-mode quantum state, it is unsuitable for a multimode quantum state because a single photon is subtracted from all multiple modes without maintaining their mode coherence. Here we experimentally implement and characterize a mode-tunable coherent single-photon subtractor based on sum …
In the past decades, quantum plasmonics has become an active area due to its potential applications in on-chip plasmonic devices for quantum information processing. However, the fundamental physical process, i.e., how a quantum state of light evolves in the photon-plasmon conversion process, has not been clearly understood. Here, we report a complete characterization of the plasmon-assisted extraordinary optical transmission process through quantum process tomography. By inputting various coherent states to interact with the plasmonic structure and detecting the output states with a homodyne d…
Wavevector quasi-phase matching was devised in the 1960s as a way to boost nonlinear interactions with efficient quantum noise squeezing as one outstanding outcome. In the era of quantum technologies, we propose a new coupling quasi-phase matching for efficient generation of multimode downconverted quantum light in nonlinear waveguide arrays. We highlight this technique achieving multimode quantum entanglement and Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steering buildup. We discuss the feasibility of this method with current technology and demonstrate its competitiveness as a resource for continuous variables…

We demonstrate quantum detector tomography of a commercial 2x2 array of superconducting nanowire single photon detectors. We show that detector-specific figures of merit including efficiency, dark-count and cross-talk probabilities can be directly extracted, without recourse to the underlying detector physics. These figures of merit are directly identified from just four elements of the reconstructed positive operator valued measure (POVM) of the device. We show that the values for efficiency and dark-count probability extracted by detector tomography show excellent agreement with independent …
We study light scattering off a two-dimensional (2D) array of atoms driven to Rydberg levels. We show that the problem can be mapped to a generalized model of waveguide QED, consisting of multiple 1D photonic channels (transverse modes), each of which directionally coupled to a corresponding Rydberg surface mode of the array. In the Rydberg blockade regime, collective excitations of different surface modes block each other, leading to multi-channel correlated photonic states. Using an analytical approach, we characterize inter-channel quantum correlations, and elucidate the role of collective …
We demonstrate the coherent transduction of quantum noise reduction, or squeezed light, by Ag localized surface plasmons (LSPs). Squeezed light, generated through four-wave-mixing in Rb vapor, is coupled to a Ag nanohole array designed to exhibit LSP-mediated extraordinary-optical transmission (EOT) spectrally coincident with the squeezed light source at 795 nm. We demonstrate that quantum noise reduction as a function of transmission is found to match closely with linear attenuation models, thus demonstrating that the photon-LSP-photon transduction process is coherent near the LSP resonance.
Continuous-variable encoding of quantum information in the optical domain has recently yielded large temporal and spectral entangled states instrumental for quantum computing and quantum communication. We introduce a protocol for the generation of spatial multipartite entanglement based on phase-matching of a propagation eigenmode in a monolithic photonic device: the array of quadratic nonlinear waveguides. We theoretically demonstrate in the spontaneous parametric downconversion regime the generation of large multipartite entangled states useful for multimode quantum networks. Our protocol is…
Broadband light sources play essential roles in diverse fields, such as high-capacity optical communications, optical coherence tomography, optical spectroscopy, and spectrograph calibration. Though an ultrabroadband nonclassical state from standard spontaneous parametric down-conversion may serve as a quantum counterpart, its detection and quantum characterization have been a challenging task. Here we demonstrate the quantitative characterization of a multimode structure in such an ultrabroadband (150 nm FWHM) squeezed state at telecom wavelength (1.5 μm). The nonclassical photon distribution…
We present efficient circuits that can be used for the phase space tomography of quantum states. The circuits evaluate individual values or selected averages of the Wigner, Kirkwood and Husimi distributions. These quantum gate arrays can be programmed by initializing appropriate computational states. The Husimi circuit relies on a subroutine that is also interesting in its own right: the efficient preparation of a coherent state, which is the ground state of the Harper Hamiltonian.
In the current quest for efficient and experimentally feasible platforms for implementation of multimode squeezing and entanglement in the continuous variable regime, we underpin and complement our results on the generation of versatile multimode entanglement and cluster states in nonlinear waveguide arrays presented by Barral et al., Phys. Rev. Appl. $\bf{14}$, 044025 (2020). We present detailed derivations of the equations that describe the propagation of light through this system, and then we focus on parameter regimes where these equations can be solved analytically. These analytical solut…
To evidence multimode spatial entanglement of spontaneous down-conversion, detector arrays allow a full field measurement, without any a priori selection of the paired photons. We show by comparing results of the recent literature that electron-multiplying CCD (EMCCD) cameras allow, in the present state of technology, the detection of quantum correlations with the best signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), while intensified CCD (ICCD) cameras allow at best to identify pairs. The SNR appears to be proportional to the square root of the number of coherence cells in each image, or Schmidt number. Then, co…
We propose a method to generate multi-mode N00N states with arrays of ultracold atoms. Our protocol requires a strong relative offset among the wells and a drive of the interparticle interaction at a frequency resonant with the offsets. The proposal is demonstrated by a numerical and a Floquet analysis of the quantum dynamics of a ring-shaped atomtronics circuit made of M weakly coupled optical traps. We generate a hierarchy of energy scales down to very few low-energy states where N00N dynamics takes place, making multi-mode N00N states appear at nearly regular time intervals. The production …
We propose a non-Gaussianity measure of a multimode quantum state based on the negentropy of quadrature distributions. Our measure satisfies desirable properties as a non-Gaussianity measure, i.e., faithfulness, invariance under Gaussian unitary operations, and monotonicity under Gaussian channels. Furthermore, we find a quantitative relation between our measure and the previously proposed non-Gaussianity measures defined via quantum relative entropy and the quantum Hilbert-Schmidt distance. This allows us to estimate the non-Gaussianity measures readily by homodyne detection, which would othe…
It is not widely appreciated that many subtleties are involved in the accurate measurement of intensity-correlated photons; even for the original experiments of Hanbury Brown and Twiss (HBT). Using a monolithic 4x4 array of single-photon avalanche diodes (SPADs), together with an off-chip algorithm for processing streaming data, we investigate the difficulties of measuring second-order photon correlations g2 in a wide variety of light fields that exhibit dramatically different correlation statistics: a multimode He-Ne laser, an incoherent intensity-modulated lamp-light source and a thermal lig…
As an important degree of freedom (DoF) in integrated photonic circuits, the orthogonal transverse mode provides a promising and flexible way to increasing communication capability, for both classical and quantum information processing. To construct large-scale on-chip multimode multi-DoF quantum systems, a transverse mode-encoded controlled-NOT (CNOT) gate is necessary. Here, through design and integrate transverse mode-dependent directional coupler and attenuators on a silicon photonic chip, we demonstrate the first multimode implementation of a two-qubit quantum gate. With the aid of state …
Quantum entanglement is a fundamental property of coherent quantum states and an essential resource for quantum computing. While two-qubit entanglement has been demonstrated for spins in silicon, creation of multipartite entanglement, a first step toward implementing quantum error correction, has remained challenging due to the difficulties in controlling a multi-qubit array, such as device disorder, magnetic and electrical noises and exacting exchange controls. Here, we show operation of a fully functional three-qubit array in silicon and generation of a three-qubit Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinge…
Microwave quantum memory promises advanced capabilities for noisy intermediate-scale superconducting quantum computers. Existing approaches to microwave quantum memory lack complete combination of high efficiency, long storage time, noiselessness and multi-qubit capacity. Here we report an efficient microwave broadband multimode quantum memory. The memory stores two spectral modes of single photon level microwave radiation in on-chip system of eight coplanar superconducting resonators. Single mode storage shows a power efficiency of up to $60\pm 3\%$ at single photon energy and more than $73\p…
Multimode entanglement is an essential resource for quantum information in continuous-variable systems. Light-based quantum technologies will arguably not be built upon table-top bulk setups, but will presumably rather resort to integrated optics. Sequential bulk optics-like proposals based on cascaded integrated interferometers are not scalable with the current state-of-the-art low-loss materials used for continuous variables. We analyze the multimode continuous-variable entanglement capabilities of a compact currently-available integrated device without bulk-optics analog: the array of nonli…
We develop a fully spatio-temporal numerical model, based on stochastic simulations, simulating the generation of spatio-temporal multimode spontaneous parametric down conversion, the propagation of the signal and idler beams through a Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometer and the detection of the outgoing beams with two separate detectors arrays. Spatial and temporal properties of the two-photon interference are investigated by measuring the spatial distribution of the momenta coincidence counts between the time integrated outgoing far-field images and a full spatio-temporal HOM dip is exhibited. Num…
A programmable gate array is a circuit whose action is controlled by input data. In this letter we describe a special--purpose quantum circuit that can be programmed to evaluate the expectation value of any operator $O$ acting on a space of states of $N$ dimensions. The circuit has a program register whose state $|Ψ(O)>_P$ encodes the operator $O$ whose expectation value is to be evaluated. The method requires knowledge of the expansion of $O$ in a basis of the space of operators. We discuss some applications of this circuit and its relation to known instances of quantum state tomography.
