The quantum algebra suq(2) is introduced as a deformation of the ordinary Lie algebra su(2). This is achieved in a simple way by making use of $q$-bosons. In connection with the quantum algebra suq(2), we discuss the q-analogues of the harmonic oscillator and the angular momentum. We also introduce q-analogues of the hydrogen atom by means of a q-deformation of the Pauli equations and of the so-called Kustaanheimo-Stiefel transformation.
The second part of this paper is devoted to the following important question in organic chemistry: given two isomers of a molecule, how to identify them with their structural formulae using only type properties of that molecule? A classical answer of this question is given for benzene by the identification of its di-substituted (para, ortho, and meta), and tri-substituted (asymmetric, vicinal, and symmetric) derivatives via the Korner substitution reactions among them. Here we develop a machinery within the framework of the Lunn-Senior's mathematical model of isomerism in organic chemistry, wh…
Thanks to an algebraic duality property of reduced states, the Schmidt best approximation theorems have important corollaries in the rigorous theory of two-electron moleculae. In turn, the "harmonium mode" or "Moshinsky atom" constitutes a non-trivial laboratory bench for energy functionals proposed over the years (1964--today), purporting to recover the full ground state of the system from knowledge of the reduced 1-body matrix. That model is usually regarded as solvable, but some important aspects of it, in particular the exact energy and full state functionals ---unraveling the "phase dilem…
We present here a review of the fundamental topics of Hartree-Fock theory in Quantum Chemistry. From the molecular Hamiltonian, using and discussing the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, we arrive to the Hartree and Hartree-Fock equations for the electronic problem. Special emphasis is placed in the most relevant mathematical aspects of the theoretical derivation of the final equations, as well as in the results regarding the existence and uniqueness of their solutions. All Hartree-Fock versions with different spin restrictions are systematically extracted from the general case, thus providing a…
This article is a pedagogical introduction to the density matrix renormalization group method and its application in quantum chemistry. It presents the easy-to-understand modern formulation based on matrix product states. It is written in Czech language.
In this paper we prove some general theorems about representations of finite groups arising from the inner semidirect product of groups. We show how these results can be used for standard applications of group theory in quantum chemistry through the orthogonality relations for the characters of irreducible representations. In this context, conditions for transitions between energy levels, projection operators and basis functions were determined. This approach applies to composite systems and it is illustrated by the dihedral group related to glycolate oxidase enzyme.
In this work, we present an overview of the phaseless auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (ph- AFQMC) approach from a computational quantum chemistry perspective, and present a numerical assessment of its performance on main group chemistry and bond-breaking problems with a total of 1004 relative energies. While our benchmark study is somewhat limited, we make recommendations for the use of ph-AFQMC for general main-group chemistry applications. For systems where single determinant wave functions are qualitatively accurate, we expect the accuracy of ph-AFQMC in conjunction with a single determ…
While in principle exact, Kohn-Sham density functional theory -- the workhorse of computational chemistry -- must rely on approximations for the exchange-correlation functional. Despite staggering successes, present-day approximations still struggle when the effects of electron-electron correlation play a prominent role. The limit in which the electronic Coulomb repulsion completely dominates the exchange-correlation functional offers a well-defined mathematical framework that provides insight for new approximations able to deal with strong correlation. In particular, the mathematical structur…
The aim of this paper is to present a generalization of Lunn-Senior's mathematical model of isomerism in organic chemistry. The main idea of Lunn and Senior is that if the type of isomerism is fixed, a molecule with a fixed skeleton and d univalent substituents has a symmetry group $W\leq S_d$ which is generally not the molecule's 3-dimensional symmetry group. The unit character of W induces a representation of the symmetric group $S_d$ which governs the combinatorics of the isomers of the given molecule. Lunn-Senior's thesis is that certain non-negative integers established by this representa…
The Hartree-Fock problem provides the conceptual and mathematical underpinning of a large portion of quantum chemistry. As efforts in quantum technology aim to enhance computational chemistry algorithms, the fundamental Hartree-Fock problem is a natural target. While quantum computers and quantum simulation offer many prospects for the future of modern chemistry, the Hartree-Fock problem is not a likely candidate. We highlight this fact from a number of perspectives including computational complexity, practical examples, and the full characterization of the energy landscapes for simple systems…
Complex biochemical pathways or regulatory enzyme kinetics can be reduced to chains of elementary reactions, which can be described in terms of chemical kinetics. This discipline provides a set of tools for quantifying and understanding the dialogue between reactants, whose framing into a solid and consistent mathematical description is of pivotal importance in the growing field of biotechnology. Among the elementary reactions so far extensively investigated, we recall the socalled Michaelis-Menten scheme and the Hill positive-cooperative kinetics, which apply to molecular binding and are char…
We have tested the original interaction-strength-interpolation (ISI) exchange-correlation functional for main group chemistry. The ISI functional is based on an interpolation between the weak and strong coupling limits and includes exact-exchange as well as the Görling-Levy second-order energy. We have analyzed in detail the basis-set dependence of the ISI functional, its dependence on the ground-state orbitals, and the influence of the size-consistency problem. We show and explain some of the expected limitations of the ISI functional (i.e. for atomization energies), but also unexpected resul…
During the past 15 years, the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) has become increasingly important for ab initio quantum chemistry. Its underlying wavefunction ansatz, the matrix product state (MPS), is a low-rank decomposition of the full configuration interaction tensor. The virtual dimension of the MPS, the rank of the decomposition, controls the size of the corner of the many-body Hilbert space that can be reached with the ansatz. This parameter can be systematically increased until numerical convergence is reached. The MPS ansatz naturally captures exponentially decaying correlat…
In the past two decades, the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) has emerged as an innovative new method in quantum chemistry relying on a theoretical framework very different from that of traditional electronic structure approaches. The development of the quantum chemical DMRG has been remarkably fast: it has already become one of the reference approaches for large-scale multiconfigurational calculations. This perspective discusses the major features of DMRG, highlighting its strengths and weaknesses also in comparison to other novel approaches. The method is presented following its h…
Quantum chemistry often considers atoms and molecules with non-zero spin. In such cases, the need for proper spin functions results in the theory of configuration state functions. Here, we consider the construction of such wavefunctions using the symmetric group and more specifically Young projectors. We discuss the formalism and detail an example to illustrate the theory. Additionally, we consider the pros and cons of specific implementations of spin symmetry in quantum simulation.
Frozen Gaussian approximation with surface hopping for mixed quantum-classical dynamics: A mathematical justification of fewest switches surface hopping algorithms
The Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) algorithm has been a rising star for the accurate ab initio exploration of Born-Oppenheimer potential energy surfaces in theoretical chemistry. However, owing to its iterative numerical nature, pit falls, that can affect the accuracy of DMRG energies, need to be circumvented. Here, after a brief introduction into this quantum chemical method, we discuss criteria that determine the accuracy of DMRG calculations.
We extend the spin-adapted density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) algorithm of McCulloch and Gulacsi [Europhys. Lett.57, 852 (2002)] to quantum chemical Hamiltonians. This involves two key modifications to the non-spin-adapted DMRG algorithm: the use of a quasi-density matrix to ensure that the renormalised DMRG states are eigenvalues of $S^2$ , and the use of the Wigner-Eckart theorem to greatly reduce the overall storage and computational cost. We argue that the advantages of the spin-adapted DMRG algorithm are greatest for low spin states. Consequently, we also implement the singlet-em…
The density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) has become an indispensable numerical tool to find exact eigenstates of finite-size quantum systems with strong correlation. In the fields of condensed matter, nuclear structure and molecular electronic structure, it has significantly extended the system sizes that can be handled compared to full configuration interaction, without losing numerical accuracy. For quantum chemistry (QC), the most efficient implementations of DMRG require the incorporation of particle number, spin and point group symmetries in the underlying matrix product state (MPS…
Advances in Prebiotic Chemistry: the potential of Analog Computing and Navier-Stokes Nernst-Planck (NPNS) Modeling in Organic Electronics Technologies (OECTs)
Most of current neural network models in quantum chemistry (QC) exclude the molecular symmetry, separate the well-correlated real space (R space), and momenta space (K space) into two individuals, which lack the essential physics in molecular chemistry. In this work, by endorsing the molecular symmetry and elementals of group theory, we propose a comprehensive method to apply symmetry in the graph neural network (SY-GNN), which extends the property-predicting coverage to all the orbital symmetry for both ground and excited states. SY-GNN shows excellent performance in predicting both the absol…
Fanpy is a free and open-source Python library for developing and testing multideterminant wavefunctions and related ab initio methods in electronic structure theory. The main use of Fanpy is to quickly prototype new methods by making it easier to transfer the mathematical conception of a new wavefunction ansätze to a working implementation. Fanpy uses the framework of our recently introduced Flexible Ansatz for N-electron Configuration Interaction (FANCI), where multideterminant wavefunctions are represented by their overlaps with Slater determinants of orthonormal spin-orbitals. In the simpl…
Monomers and small clusters of such molecules can reversibly trap conduction band electrons in dilute alkane solutions. The dynamics and energetics of this trapping have been studied using pulse radiolysis - transient absorption spectroscopy and time-resolved photoconductivity. Binding energies, thermal detrapping rates, and absorption spectra of excess electrons attached to monomer and multimer solute traps are obtained and possible structures for these species are discussed. "Dipole coagulation" (stepwise growth of the solute cluster around the cavity electron) predicted by Mozumder in 1972 …
We investigate the method to combine the techniques of quantum chemisty with QED. In our theory, we treat the N-electron system and the Dirac sea on an equal footing; we regard both of them as the dynamical degrees of freedom of a many-body system. After the introduction of our QED-SCF method, the QED-SCF solutions are classified into several classes on the basis of group-theoretical operations such as time reversal, parity and O(3) rotational symmetry. The natural orbitals of general QED-SCF solutions are determined by diagonalizing the first order density matrix. Thus, we obtain the possibil…
An investigation of the relationship between morphology and chemistry of the D-type spherules from the recovery expedition of the CNEOS 2014-01-08 bolide: Implications for origins
We have implemented the single-site density matrix renormalization group algorithm for the variational optimization of SU(2) \times U(1) (spin and particle number) invariant matrix product states for general spin and particle number symmetric fermionic Hamiltonians. This class also includes non-relativistic quantum chemical systems within the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. High-accuracy ab-initio finite field results of the longitudinal static polarizabilities and second hyperpolarizabilities of one-dimensional hydrogen chains are obtained with the algorithm. A comparison with other methods i…
We combine explicit correlation via the canonical transcorrelation approach with the density matrix renormalization group and initiator full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo methods to compute a near-exact beryllium dimer curve, {\it without} the use of composite methods. In particular, our direct density matrix renormalization group calculations produce a well-depth of $D_e$=931.2 cm$^{-1}$ which agrees very well with recent experimentally derived estimates $D_e$=929.7$\pm 2$~cm$^{-1}$ [Science, 324, 1548 (2009)] and $D_e$=934.6~cm$^{-1}$ [Science, 326, 1382 (2009)]], as well the…
In quantum chemistry, one of the most important challenges is the static correlation problem when solving the electronic Schrödinger equation for molecules in the Born--Oppenheimer approximation. In this article, we analyze the tailored coupled-cluster method (TCC), one particular and promising method for treating molecular electronic-structure problems with static correlation. The TCC method combines the single-reference coupled-cluster (CC) approach with an approximate reference calculation in a subspace [complete active space (CAS)] of the considered Hilbert space that covers the static cor…
