We have implemented the single-site density matrix renormalization group algorithm for the variational optimization of SU(2) \times U(1) (spin and particle number) invariant matrix product states for general spin and particle number symmetric fermionic Hamiltonians. This class also includes non-relativistic quantum chemical systems within the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. High-accuracy ab-initio finite field results of the longitudinal static polarizabilities and second hyperpolarizabilities of one-dimensional hydrogen chains are obtained with the algorithm. A comparison with other methods is made.
The Density Matrix Renormalisation Group (DMRG) is an electronic structure method that has recently been applied to ab-initio quantum chemistry. Even at this early stage, it has enabled the solution of many problems that would previously have been intractable with any other method, in particular, multireference problems with very large active spaces. Historically, the DMRG was not originally formulated from a wavefunction perspective, but rather in a Renormalisation Group (RG) language. However, it is now realised that a wavefunction view of the DMRG provides a more convenient, and in some cas…
Fanpy is a free and open-source Python library for developing and testing multideterminant wavefunctions and related ab initio methods in electronic structure theory. The main use of Fanpy is to quickly prototype new methods by making it easier to transfer the mathematical conception of a new wavefunction ansätze to a working implementation. Fanpy uses the framework of our recently introduced Flexible Ansatz for N-electron Configuration Interaction (FANCI), where multideterminant wavefunctions are represented by their overlaps with Slater determinants of orthonormal spin-orbitals. In the simpl…
Determining Hamiltonian ground states and energies is a challenging task with many possible approaches on quantum computers. While variational quantum eigensolvers are popular approaches for near term hardware, adiabatic state preparation is an alternative that does not require noisy optimization of parameters. Beyond adiabatic schedules, QAOA is an important method for optimization problems. In this work we modify QAOA to apply to finding ground states of molecules and empirically evaluate the modified algorithm on several molecules. This modification applies physical insights used in classic…
We propose a lattice density-functional theory for {\it ab initio} quantum chemistry or physics as a route to an efficient approach that approximates the full configuration interaction energy and orbital occupations for molecules with strongly-correlated electrons. We build on lattice density-functional theory for the Hubbard model by deriving Kohn-Sham equations for a reduced then full quantum chemistry Hamiltonian, and demonstrate the method on the potential energy curves for the challenging problem of modelling elongating bonds in a linear chain of six hydrogen atoms. Here the accuracy of t…
Ground state eigenvectors of the reduced Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer Hamiltonian are employed as a wavefunction ansatz to model strong electron correlation in quantum chemistry. This wavefunction is a product of weakly-interacting pairs of electrons. While other geminal wavefunctions may only be employed in a projected Schrödinger equation, the present approach may be solved variationally with polynomial cost. The resulting wavefunctions are used to compute expectation values of Coulomb Hamiltionans and we present results for atoms and dissociation curves which are in agreement with doubly-occup…
We present a mean field theory for excited states that is broadly analogous to ground state Hartree-Fock theory. Like Hartree-Fock, our approach is deterministic, state-specific, applies a variational principle to a minimally correlated ansatz, produces energy stationary points, relaxes the orbital basis, has a Fock-build cost-scaling, and can serve as the foundation for correlation methods such as perturbation theory and coupled cluster theory. To emphasize this last point, we pair our mean field approach with an excited state analogue of second order Moller-Plesset theory and demonstrate tha…
We develop a resource efficient step-merged quantum imaginary time evolution approach (smQITE) to solve for the ground state of a Hamiltonian on quantum computers. This heuristic method features a fixed shallow quantum circuit depth along the state evolution path. We use this algorithm to determine binding energy curves of a set of molecules, including H$_2$, H$_4$, H$_6$, LiH, HF, H$_2$O and BeH$_2$, and find highly accurate results. The required quantum resources of smQITE calculations can be further reduced by adopting the circuit form of the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) technique,…

The density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) has become an indispensable numerical tool to find exact eigenstates of finite-size quantum systems with strong correlation. In the fields of condensed matter, nuclear structure and molecular electronic structure, it has significantly extended the system sizes that can be handled compared to full configuration interaction, without losing numerical accuracy. For quantum chemistry (QC), the most efficient implementations of DMRG require the incorporation of particle number, spin and point group symmetries in the underlying matrix product state (MPS…
During the past 15 years, the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) has become increasingly important for ab initio quantum chemistry. The underlying matrix product state (MPS) ansatz is a low-rank decomposition of the full configuration interaction tensor. The virtual dimension of the MPS controls the size of the corner of the many-body Hilbert space that can be reached. Whereas the MPS ansatz will only yield an efficient description for noncritical one-dimensional systems, it can still be used as a variational ansatz for other finite-size systems. Rather large virtual dimensions are th…
This chapter discusses contemporary quantum chemical methods and provides general insights into modern electronic structure theory with a focus on heavy-element-containing compounds. We first give a short overview of relativistic Hamiltonians that are frequently applied to account for relativistic effects. Then, we scrutinize various quantum chemistry methods that approximate the $N$-electron wave function. In this respect, we will review the most popular single- and multi-reference approaches that have been developed to model the multi-reference nature of heavy element compounds and their gro…

We present a tree-tensor-network-based method to study strongly correlated systems with nonlocal interactions in higher dimensions. Although the momentum-space and quantum-chemistry versions of the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method have long been applied to such systems, the spatial topology of DMRG-based methods allows efficient optimizations to be carried out with respect to one spatial dimension only. Extending the matrix-product-state picture, we formulate a more general approach by allowing the local sites to be coupled to more than two neighboring auxiliary subspaces. Fo…
