A model for the formation of cavitation nuclei in liquids has recently been presented with basis in interfacial liquid tension at non-planar solid surfaces of concave form. In the present paper investigations of water-solid interfaces by atomic force microscopy are reported to illuminate experimentally effects of interfacial liquid tension. The results support that such tension occurs and that voids develop at solid-liquid interfaces.
Crude oil-water interfacial tension in petroleum reservoir is reduced or increased due to surfactant injection or surfactant retention, respectively. Changes in the interfacial tension crucially attribute to a governing capillary pressure and hence an oil displacement in spontaneous imbibition process. The current study attempts to elucidate an influence of such changes on spontaneous imbibition by replacing surfactant concentration consecutively with two approaches: sequential decrease and sequential increase in the interfacial tension. Two fluid flow directions were examined simultaneously: …
Discrepancy in Oil Displacement Mechanisms at the Equivalent Interfacial Tensions: Differentiating Contributions from Surfactant and Nanoparticles on Interfacial Activities
An interface between two miscible fluids is transient, existing as a non-equilibrium state before complete molecular mixing is reached. However, during the existence of such an interface, which typically be at short timescales, composition gradients at the boundary between the two liquids cause stresses effectively mimicking an interfacial tension. Here, we combine numerical modelling and experiments to study the influence of an effective interfacial tension between a colloidal fibre dispersion and its own solvent on the flow in a microfluidic system. In a flow-focusing channel, the dispersion…
We present fluid dynamics videos of the motion of a boat on a two-layer or three-layer fluid. Under certain specific conditions, this setup generates large amplitude interfacial waves, while no surface waves are visible. The boat is slowed down leading to a peristaltic effect and sometimes even stopped: this is the so-called dead water phenomenon.
The influence of miscibility and liquid wettability during droplet impact onto thin wall films is investigated experimentally. Despite similar liquid properties and impact conditions, differences in the splashing limit, the crown extension and the duration of the ascending phase are observed. These differences are related to the interfacial tension of the droplet/wall-film liquid pairs, which is linked to their miscibility and wettability. More precisely, by calculating the crown surface energy, we show that the energy stored in the interface between droplet and wall-film (if any) is not negli…
This progress report summarizes recent studies of electrochemical oxidation to modulate the interfacial tension of gallium-based alloys. These alloys, which are liquid at ambient conditions, have the largest interfacial tension of any liquid at room temperature. The ability to modulate the tension offers the possibility to create forces that change the shape and position of the metal. It has been known since the late 1800s that electrocapillarity-the use of potential to modulate the electric double layer on the surface of metals in electrolyte-lowers the interfacial tension of liquid metal. Ye…
In this paper, the effects of interfacial tension between the sediment solid particle and liquid on the settlement of sediment flocs are investigated. After a discussion of mechanical and physical chemistry, we give a settling velocity expression including such dynamical information of the floc growth as interfacial tension and primary particle size \textit{etc.}. The resulting expression indicates the average settling velocity of sediment flocs increases with increasing solid-liquid interfacial tension in a form of power law and deceases with the primary particle size. We report on a general …
In this work we present a non-standard model for microbial enhanced oil recovery including the oil-water interfacial area. Including the interfacial area in the model, we eliminate the hysteresis in the capillary pressure relationship. One of the characteristics that a surfactant should have, it is biological production at the oil-water interface. Therefore, we consider the production rate of surfactants not only as a function of the nutrient concentration, but also the interfacial area. To solve the model equations, we use an efficient and robust linearization scheme that considers a linear a…
The invasion of one fluid into another of higher viscosity in a quasi-two dimensional geometry typically produces complex fingering patterns. Because interfacial tension suppresses short-wavelength fluctuations, its elimination by using pairs of miscible fluids would suggest an instability producing highly ramified singular structures. Previous studies focused on wavelength selection at the instability onset and overlooked the striking features appearing more globally. Here we investigate the non-linear growth that occurs after the instability has been fully established. We find a rich variety…
Control of fluid dynamics at the micrometer scale is essential to emulsion science and materials design, which is ubiquitous in everyday life and is frequently encountered in industrial applications. Most studies on multiphase flow focus on oil-water systems with substantial interfacial tension. Advances in microfluidics have enabled the study of multiphase flow with more complex dynamics. Here, we show that the evolution of the interface in a jet surrounded by a co-flowing continuous phase with an ultra-low interfacial tension presents new opportunities to the control of flow morphologies. Th…
The Rayleigh-Taylor Instability (RTI) in compressible flow with inter-molecular interactions is probed via the Discrete Boltzmann Method (DBM). The effects of interfacial tension, viscosity and heat conduction are investigated. It is found that the influences of interfacial tension on the perturbation amplitude, bubble velocity, and two kinds of entropy production rates all show differences at different stages of RTI evolution. It inhibits the RTI evolution at the bubble acceleration stage, while at the asymptotic velocity stage, it first promotes and then inhibits the RTI evolution. Viscosity…
Brine fluids have recently been of high interest to enhanced oil recovery. Mechanisms for such improvement were widely proposed, including wettability alteration and reduction in the oil-brine interfacial tension (IFT), although their synergistic contributions were vaguely clarified. Crude oil displacement by spontaneous imbibition was conducted in the current research with focus on the effects of brine valency and concentration. Monovalent (NaCl) and divalent (CaCl2) brines at elevated concentrations were examined. Imbibition results showed that NaCl brine at suitable concentration (100 mM) d…
We exploit the deformation of drops spinning in a denser background fluid to investigate the effective interfacial tension (EIT) between miscible molecular fluids. We find that for sufficiently low interfacial tension, spinning drops develop dumbbell shapes, with two large heads connected by a thinner central body. We show that this shape depends not only on the density and viscosity contrast between the drop and background fluids, but also on the fluid molecular structure, and hence on the stresses developing at their interface due to different molecular interaction. We systematically investi…

Flight on the two-dimensional air-water interface, with body weight supported by surface tension, is a unique locomotion strategy well adapted for the environmental niche on the surface of water. Although previously described in phylogenetically basal aquatic insects like stone flies, the biomechanics of interfacial flight has never been analyzed. Here, we report interfacial flight as an adapted behaviour in water-lily beetles (Galerucella nymphaeae, Linnaeus 1758) which are also dexterous airborne fliers. We present the first quantitative biomechanical model of interfacial flight in insects, …
Superhydrophobic surfaces have been shown to produce significant drag reduction in both laminar and turbulent flows by introducing an apparent slip velocity along an air-water interface trapped within the surface roughness. In the experiments presented within this study, we demonstrate the existence of a surface tension gradient associated with the resultant Marangoni flow along an air-water interface that causes the slip velocity and slip length to be significantly reduced. In this study, the slip velocity along a millimeter-sized air-water interface was investigated experimentally. This larg…
This work focuses on the interfacial dynamics with interfacial mass flux in the presence of acceleration and surface tension. We employ the general matrix method to find the fundamental solutions for the linearized boundary value problem conserving mass, momentum and energy. We find that the dynamics can be stable or unstable depending on the values of the acceleration, the surface tension and the density ratio. In the stable regime, the flow has the non-perturbed fields in the bulk, is shear-free at the interface, and has the constant interface velocity. The dynamics is unstable only when it …
A systematically designed study has been conducted to understand and clearly demarcate the degree of contribution by the constituting elements to the surface tension of nanocolloids. The effects of elements such as surfactants, particles and the combined effects of these on the interfacial tension of these complex fluids are studied employing pendant drop shape analysis method by fitting Young Laplace equation. Only particle has shown considerable increase in surface tension with particle concentration in a polar medium like DI water whereas only marginal effect particles on surface tension in…
Using equilibrium and non-equilibrium molecular dynamic (MD) simulations, we found that engineering the strain on the graphene planes forming a channel can drastically change the interfacial friction of water transport through it. There is a sixfold change of interfacial friction stress when the strain changes from -10% to 10%. Stretching the graphene walls increases the interfacial shear stress, while compressing the graphene walls reduces it. Detailed analysis of the molecular structure reveals the essential roles of the interfacial potential energy barrier and the structural commensuratenes…
Water under tension, as can be found in several systems including tree vessels, is metastable. Cavitation can spontaneously occur, nucleating a bubble. We investigate the dynamics of spon- taneous or triggered cavitation inside water filled microcavities of a hydrogel. Results show that a stable bubble is created in only a microsecond timescale, after transient oscillations. Then, a diffusion driven expansion leads to filling of the cavity. Analysis reveals that the nucleation of a bubble releases a tension of several tens of MPa, and a simple model captures the different time scales of the ex…
We present an exact relation among the kinetic, potential and surface tension energies of a solitary wave in deep water in all dimensions. We deduce its non-existence in the absence of the effects of surface tension, provided that gravity acts in a direction opposite to what is physically realistic.
Some effects of surface tension on fully-nonlinear, long, surface water waves are studied by numerical means. The differences between various solitary waves and their interactions in subcritical and supercritical surface tension regimes are presented. Analytical expressions for new peaked travelling wave solutions are presented in the case of critical surface tension. The numerical experiments were performed using a high-accurate finite element method based on smooth cubic splines and the four-stage, classical, explicit Runge-Kutta method of order four.
