In the present paper we study the long wavelength and slow time scale behavior of a coasting beam in a resonator adopting a broad-band impedance model. Based on the renormalization group approach we derive a set of coupled evolution equations for the beam envelope distribution function and the resonator voltage amplitude. The equation for the resonator voltage amplitude is further transformed into a generalized Ginzburg-Landau equation.
Breaking of a plasma wave driven by a long beam of charged particles results in electron jets escaping from the plasma column and forming an electron halo. For plasma densities less than or of the order of the beam density, this process is well described by a semi-analytical model, which agrees with simulations and allows to calculate the position of wavebreaking points and determine the regions around the plasma column occupied by the halo.
Self modulated dynamics of a relativistic charged particle beam is reviewed within the context of the theory of plasma wake field excitation. The self-consistent description of the beam dynamics is provided by coupling the Vlasov equation with a Poisson-type equation relating the plasma wake potential to the beam density. An analysis of the beam envelope self-modulation is then carried out and the criteria for the occurrence of the instability are discussed thereby.
A new method able to transport charged particle beams along curved paths is presented. It is based on curved capillary-discharge waveguides in which the induced azimuthal magnetic field is used both to focus the beam and keep it close to the capillary axis. We show that such a solution is highly tunable, it allows to develop compact structures providing large deflecting angles and, unlike conventional solutions based on bending magnets, preserves the beam longitudinal phase space. The latter feature, in particular, is very promising when dealing with ultra-short bunches for which non-trivial m…
Coherent instabilities of intense high-energy "white" charged-particle beams in the presence of nonlocal effects within the context of the Madelung fluid description
In present work, we report an experimental method to measure the density and distribution of a supersonic gas jet used for charged particle beam profile monitoring. The density of the gas jet used in this monitor was in the range of $10^{14}$ - $10^{17}$ molecules/$m^3$.
Measures of discrepancy between probability distributions (statistical distance) are widely used in the fields of artificial intelligence and machine learning. We describe how certain measures of statistical distance can be implemented as numerical diagnostics for simulations involving charged-particle beams. Related measures of statistical dependence are also described. The resulting diagnostics provide sensitive measures of dynamical processes important for beams in nonlinear or high-intensity systems, which are otherwise difficult to characterize. The focus is on kernel-based methods such a…
Observations of single bunch beam-beam coherent modes during dedicated experiments in the LHC are presented. Their role in standard operation for physics is discussed and, in particular, candidates of beam-beam coherent mode driven unstable by the machine impedance are presented.
Quantum mechanics of bending of a nonrelativistic monoenergetic charged particle beam by a dipole magnet is studied in the paraxial approximation. The transfer map for the position and momentum components of a particle of the beam between two transverse planes at different points on the curved optic axis of the system is derived starting with the nonrelativistic Schrödinger equation. It is found that the quantum transfer map contains the classical transfer map as the main part and there are tiny quantum correction terms. The negligibly small quantum corrections explain the remarkable success o…
An all-optical method of ultrafast spin rotation is put forward to precisely manipulate the polarization of relativistic charged particle beams of leptons or ions. In particular, laser-driven dense ultrashort beams are manipulated via single-shot interaction with a co-propagating moderate temporally asymmetric (frequency-chirped or subcycle THz) laser pulse. Using semi-classical numerical simulations, we find that in a temporally asymmetrical laser field, the spin rotation of a particle can be determined from the flexibly controllable phase retardation between its spin precession and momentum …
Stochastic phenomena occurring within charged particle beams can be handled using the Vlasov-Fokker-Planck generalization of the Vlasov equation. In particular, this non-deterministic approach can deal with effects due to Coulomb scattering between the beam particles. Moreover, stochastic phenomena also occur in computer simulations of charged particle beams. Both processes -- although different in their physical nature -- can be described by the Vlasov-Fokker-Planck equation, as in both cases the underlying stochastic process can be classified as a Markov process. This description is applied …
In polarized proton operation in the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) coherent beam-beam modes are routinely observed with beam transfer function measurements. These modes can become unstable under external excitation or in the presence of impedance. This becomes even more relevant in the presence of head-on compensation, which reduces the beam-beam tune spread and hence Landau damping. We report on experiments and simulations carried out to understand the impact of coherent modes on operation with electron lenses.
The requirement of axial magnetic field for focusing and transportation of sheet beam using cusped magnets is less as compared to solenoid magnetic fields which is uniform. There is often some confusion about how a cusped magnetic field focuses high current density sheet beam because it is generally understood that non-uniform magnetic field cannot guide the particle beam along its axis of propagation .In this paper, we perform simple analysis of the dynamics of sheet beam in a cusped magnetic field with single electron model and emphasize an intuitive understanding of interesting features (as…
In this paper we describe an instability, which we called a Plasma-Cascade Amplifier, occurring in electron beams propagating along a straight trajectory.
The equations, which describe generation of coherent radiation by a relativistic electron bunch moving in a photonic crystal, are obtained. Spectral-angular distribution of radiation and intensity of radiation in time-domain are derived. The interaction of the bunch electrons with the electromagnetic field induced by bunch itself at the initial stage of producing coherent radiation is shown contributing to the expression for the bunch current with the terms proportional to particle acceleration (proportional to interaction time and strength of electric field induced by bunch itself) along with…
We simulate the focusing of a partially-coherent X-ray beam emitted by an undulator in a fourth-generation storage ring performing coherent mode decomposition and wave optics propagation. The focus position is shifted, and its size is enlarged when an entrance slit crops the beam. This is the usual case when a slit is used to select the coherent fraction. The pairing of two focusing elements (mirrors, lenses or transfocators) to ensure a fixed focal position is also analyzed. Our results show that the image of a partially coherent source, such an undulator in a low-emittance storage ring, is a…
Hamiltonian Formalism for Solving the Vlasov-Poisson Equations and Its Applications to Periodic Focusing Systems and the Coherent Beam-Beam Interaction
Synchrotron radiation emitted by electrons passing through an undulator placed in a storage ring is decomposed in coherent modes. The case of ultimate storage rings where the electron emittance is comparable to the emittance of the photon fan is analyzed by means of the cross spectral density and the coherent mode spectrum. The proposed method permits naturally the statistical analysis and propagation of the cross spectral density along the beamline optics. The coherence properties of the X-ray beam at any point of the beamline are completely given in terms of the eigenvalues and coherent mode…
Precision searches for the electric dipole moment of protons in storage ring experiments call for beam-position monitoring in the picometer range. We present the relevant fully quantum mechanical derivation of radiofrequency-driven collective oscillations of a beam in a storage ring.
Longitudinal charge profile measurements or bunch shape measurements is a challenge for temporally short non-relativistic bunches. The field profile has a larger longitudinal extent compared to the charge profile for such beams. This affects the ability of field sensing devices such as phase pick-ups or wall current monitors to measure charge distribution. Here we evaluate the feasibility for usage of coherent transition and diffraction radiation from non-relativistic beams for bunch shape measurements.
This paper presents a novel approach for constructing neural networks which model charged particle beam dynamics. In our approach, the Taylor maps arising in the representation of dynamics are mapped onto the weights of a polynomial neural network. The resulting network approximates the dynamical system with perfect accuracy prior to training and provides a possibility to tune the network weights on additional experimental data. We propose a symplectic regularization approach for such polynomial neural networks that always restricts the trained model to Hamiltonian systems and significantly im…
With a low emittance and short-bunch electron beam at a high repetition rate realized by a superconducting linac, stimulated excitation of an optical cavity at the terahertz spectrum range has been shown. The electron beam passed through small holes in the cavity mirrors without being destroyed. A sharp resonance structure which indicated wide-band stimulated emission via coherent diffraction radiation was observed while scanning the round-trip length of the cavity.
