This work is devoted to the decay ofrandom solutions of the unforced Burgers equation in one dimension in the limit of vanishing viscosity. The initial velocity is homogeneous and Gaussian with a spectrum proportional to $k^n$ at small wavenumbers $k$ and falling off quickly at large wavenumbers. In physical space, at sufficiently large distances, there is an ``outer region'', where the velocity correlation function preserves exactly its initial form (a power law) when $n$ is not an even integer. When $1<n<2$ the spectrum, at long times, has three scaling regions : first, a $|k|^n$ region at very small $k$\ms1 with a time-independent constant, stemming from this outer region, in which the initial conditions are essentially frozen; second, a $k^2$ region at intermediate wavenumbers, related to a self-similarly evolving ``inner region'' in physical space and, finally, the usual $k^{-2}$ region, associated to the shocks. The switching from the $|k|^n$ to the $k^2$ region occurs around a wave number $k_s(t) \propto t^{-1/[2(2-n)]}$, while the switching from $k^2$ to $k^{-2}$ occurs around $k_L(t)\propto t^{-1/2}$ (ignoring logarithmic corrections in both instances). The key element in the derivation of the results is an extension of the Kida (1979) log-corrected $1/t$ law for the energy decay when $n=2$ to the case of arbitrary integer or non-integer $n>1$. A systematic derivation is given in which both the leading term and estimates of higher order corrections can be obtained. High-resolution numerical simulations are presented which support our findings.
We carry out a detailed study of dynamic multiscaling in the turbulent nonequilibrium, but statistically steady, state of the stochastically forced one-dimensional Burgers equation. We introduce the concept of $\textit{interval collapse times}$ $τ_{\rm col}$, the time taken for an interval of length $\ell$, demarcated by a pair of Lagrangian tracers, to collapse at a shock. By calculating the dynamic scaling exponent of the order-$p$ moment of $τ_{\rm col}$, we show that (a) there is $\textit{not one but an infinity of characteristic time scales}$ and (b) the probability distribution function …
It is shown that the origin of the Kolmogorov's law of the fully developed turbulence is the result of the joint stochastic dynamics of pair points separated by the shock. The result obtained in 1-d case generalized on 3-d turbulence. A novel procedure of determination of correlation functions in 3-d turbulence is proposed.
Since the famous work by Kolmogorov on incompressible turbulence, the structure-function theory has been a key foundation of modern turbulence study. Due to the simplicity of Burgers turbulence, structure functions are calculated to arbitrary orders, which provides numerous implications for other compressible turbulent systems. We present the derivation of exact forcing-scale resolving expressions for high-order structure functions of the burgers turbulence. Compared with the previous theories where the structure functions are calculated in the inertial range based on the statistics of shocks,…
Instanton calculations are performed in the context of stationary Burgers turbulence to estimate the tails of the probability density function (PDF) of velocity gradients. These results are then compared to those obtained from massive direct numerical simulations (DNS) of the randomly forced Burgers equation. The instanton predictions are shown to agree with the DNS in a wide range of regimes, including those that are far from the limiting cases previously considered in the literature. These results settle the controversy of the relevance of the instanton approach for the prediction of the vel…
We explore the spatial-temporal structure functions of Burgers turbulence driven by a temporal Ornstein-Uhlenbeck (OU) process, where the characteristic time scale of the OU process is much larger than that of the energy flux across spatial scales. Based on the Kármán-Howarth-Monin equation, we obtain an expression for the third-order spatial-temporal structure function away from the dissipation scale. This expression combines Kolmogorov's exact result of spatial structure function and the exponential temporal decay of the external force. We numerically justify this expression and find that th…
We compare different approaches towards an effective description of multi-scale velocity field correlations in turbulence. Predictions made by the operator product expansion, the so-called fusion rules, are placed in juxtaposition to an approach that interprets the turbulent energy cascade in terms of a Markov process of velocity increments in scale. We explicitly show that the fusion rules are a direct consequence of the Markov property provided that the structure functions exhibit scaling in the inertial range. Furthermore, the limit case of joint velocity gradient and velocity increment sta…

Data-driven turbulence modeling is experiencing a surge in interest following algorithmic and hardware developments in the data sciences. We discuss an approach using the differentiable physics paradigm that combines known physics with machine learning to develop closure models for Burgers' turbulence. We consider the 1D Burgers system as a prototypical test problem for modeling the unresolved terms in advection-dominated turbulence problems. We train a series of models that incorporate varying degrees of physical assumptions on an a posteriori loss function to test the efficacy of models acro…
Developing data-driven subgrid-scale (SGS) models for large eddy simulations (LES) has received substantial attention recently. Despite some success, particularly in a priori (offline) tests, challenges have been identified that include numerical instabilities in a posteriori (online) tests and generalization (i.e., extrapolation) of trained data-driven SGS models, for example to higher Reynolds numbers. Here, using the stochastically forced Burgers turbulence as the test-bed, we show that deep neural networks trained using properly pre-conditioned (augmented) data yield stable and accurate a …
In this work, we perform an aposteriori error analysis on implicit and explicit large eddy simulation closure models for solving the Burgers turbulence problem. Our closure modeling efforts include both functional and structural models equipped with various low-pass filters. We introduce discrete binomial smoothing filters and an enhanced version of the Van Cittert algorithm to accelerate the convergence of approximate deconvolution processes including regularization and relaxation filtering approaches. Our implicit modeling efforts consist of various high-order schemes including compact and n…
This paper is a synopsis of the recent book A. Boritchev, S. Kuksin, \textit{One-Dimensional Turbulence and the Stochastic Burgers Equation}, AMS Publications, 2021 (to appear). The book is dedicated to the stochastic Burgers equation as a model for 1d turbulence, and the paper discusses its content in relation to the Kolmogorov theory of turbulence.
In this paper, we introduce a relaxation filtering closure approach to account for subgrid scale effects in explicitly filtered large eddy simulations using the concept of anisotropic diffusion. We utilize the Perona-Malik diffusion model and demonstrate its shock capturing ability and spectral performance for solving the Burgers turbulence problem, which is a simplified prototype for more realistic turbulent flows showing the same quadratic nonlinearity. Our numerical assessments present the behavior of various diffusivity functions in conjunction with a detailed sensitivity analysis with res…
We present a theoretical and numerical study of Fourier space triad phase dynamics in one-dimensional stochastically forced Burgers equation at Reynolds number $\mathrm{Re} \approx 2.7 \times 10^4$. We demonstrate that Fourier triad phases over the inertial range display a collective behaviour characterised by intermittent periods of synchronisation and alignment, reminiscent of Kuramoto model (Kuramoto 1984) and directly related to collisions of shocks in physical space. These periods of synchronisation favour efficient energy fluxes across the inertial range towards small scales, resulting i…

We present a generalized picture of intermittency in turbulence that is based on the theory of stochastic processes. To this end, we rely on the experimentally and numerically verified finding by R.~Friedrich and J.~Peinke [Phys. Rev. Lett. 78, 863 (1997)] that allows for an interpretation of the turbulent energy cascade as a Markov process of the velocity increments in scale. It is explicitly shown that all known phenomenological models of turbulence can be reproduced by the Kramers-Moyal expansion of the velocity increment probability density function that is associated to a Markov process. …

First, we discuss the non-Gaussian type of self-similar solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations. We revisit a class of self-similar solutions which was studied in Canonne-Planchon (1996). In order to shed some light on it, we study self-similar solutions to the 1D Burgers equation in detail, completing the most general form of similarity profiles that it can possibly possess. In particular, on top of the well-known source-type solution we identify a kink-type solution. It is represented by one of the confluent hypergeometric functions, viz. Kummer's function $M.$ For the 2D Navier-Stokes equa…

This study uses a simplified detonation model to investigate the behaviour of detonations with galloping-like pulsations. The reactive Burgers equation is used for the hydrodynamic equation, coupled to a pulsed source whereby all the shocked reactants are simultaneously consumed at fixed time intervals. The model mimics the short periodic amplifications of the shock front followed by relatively lengthy decays seen in galloping detonations. Numerical simulations reveal a saw tooth evolution of the front velocity with a period-averaged detonation speed equal to the Chapman-Jouguet velocity. The …
Turbulence locally created in laminar pipe flows shows sudden decay or splitting after a stochastic waiting time. In laboratory experiments, the mean waiting time was observed to increase double-exponentially as the Reynolds number (Re) approaches its critical value. To understand the origin of this double-exponential increase, we perform many pipe flow direct numerical simulations of the Navier-Stokes equations, and measure the cumulative histogram of the maximum axial vorticity field over the pipe (turbulence intensity). In the domain where the turbulence intensity is not small, we observe t…
We demonstrate that numerical solutions of Burgers' equation can be obtained by a scale-totality algorithm for fluids of small viscosity (down to one billionth). Two sets of initial data, modelling simple shears and wall boundary layers, are chosen for our computations. Most of the solutions are carried out well into the fully turbulent regime over finely-resolved scales in space and in time. It is found that an abrupt spatio-temporal concentration in shear constitutes an essential part during the flow evolution. The vorticity surge has been instigated by the non-linearity complying with insta…
