Transmission properties of the X-ray window for the SIXA spectrometer

The ultrathin X-ray entrance window for the spaceborne spectrometer SIXA was characterised using synchrotron radiation. X-ray absorption fine structure near the absorption edges of the constituting elements (aluminium, carbon, oxygen and nitrogen) was measured. Large scale positional variations were also studied. In addition, the opacity of the window was tested by observing the effect of photocurrent in the detector generated by light leaked through the window.

Characterising a Si(Li) detector element for the SIXA X-ray spectrometer

The detection efficiency and response function of a Si(Li) detector element for the SIXA spectrometer have been determined in the 500 eV to 5 keV energy range using synchrotron radiation emitted at a bending magnet of the electron storage ring BESSY, which is a primary radiation standard. The agreement between the measured spectrum and the model calculation is better than 2%. Electrode thickness measurement of a Si(Li) detector for the SIXA array

Cathode electrodes of the Si(Li) detector elements of the SIXA X-ray spectrometer array are formed by gold-palladium alloy contact layers. The equivalent thickness of gold in one element was measured by observing the characteristic L-shell X-rays of gold excited by monochromatised synchrotron radiation with photon energies above the L3 absorption edge of gold. The results obtained at 4 different photon energies below the L2 edge yield an average value of 22.4(35) nm which is consistent with the earlier result extracted from detection efficiency measurements. Towards extremely high-resolution broad-band flat-field spectrometer in 'water window'

The optical design of a novel spectrometer is present, combining a cylindrically convex pre-mirror with a cylindrically concave VLS grating (both in meridional) to deliver a resolving power of 100,000-200,000 in 'water window' (2-5nm). More remarkably, unlike a typical RIXS spectrometer to obtain such high resolution by tight focusing or tiny confinement slit (<1μm), here the resolution could be achieved for an effective meridional source size of 50μm (r.m.s.). Theory and optical design of x-ray echo spectrometers

X-ray echo spectroscopy, a space-domain counterpart of neutron spin echo, is a recently proposed inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS) technique. X-ray echo spectroscopy relies on imaging IXS spectra, and does not require x-ray monochromatization.
