The temperature dependence of the rate of the reaction CH_4+H \to CH_3+H_2 is studied using classical collision theory with a temperature-dependent effective potential derived from a path integral analysis. Analytical expressions are obtained for the effective potential and for the rate constant. The rate constant expressions use a temperature-dependent activation energy. They give better agreement with the available experimental results than do previous empirical fits. Since all but one of the parameters in the present expressions are obtained from theory, rather than by fitting to experimental reaction rates, the expressions can be expected to be more dependable than purely empirical expressions at temperatures above 2000 K or below 350 K, where experimental results are not available.
The accurate and efficient calculation of the rate coefficients of chemical reactions is a key issue in the research of chemical dynamics. In this work, by applying the dimension-free ultra-stable Cayley propagator, the thermal rate coefficients of a prototypic high dimensional chemical reaction OH + CH4 -> H2O + CH3 in the temperature range of 200 K to 1500 K are investigated with ring polymer molecular dynamics (RPMD), on a highly accurate full-dimensional potential energy surface. Kinetic isotope effects (KIEs) for three isotopologues of the title reaction are also studied. The results demo…
We develop a broadly-applicable computational method for the automatic exploration of the bimolecular multi-reaction mechanism. The current methodology mainly involves the high-energy Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics (BOMD) simulation and the successive reaction pathway construction. Several computational tricks are introduced, which include the selection of the reactive regions based on the electronic-structure calculations and the employment of the virtual collision-dynamics simulations with monitoring atomic distance before BOMD. These prescreening steps largely reduce the number of traj…
We develop a theoretical method for solving the quantum mechanical reactive scattering problem in the presence of external fields based on a hyperspherical coordinate description of the reaction complex combined with the total angular momentum representation for collisions in external fields. The method allows us to obtain converged results for the chemical reaction LiF + H -> Li + HF in an electric field. Our calculations demonstrate that, by inducing couplings between states of different total angular momenta, electric fields with magnitudes <150 kV/cm give rise to resonant scattering and a …
A class of Brownian dynamics algorithms for stochastic reaction-diffusion models which include reversible bimolecular reactions is presented and analyzed. The method is a generalization of the $λ$--$\newrho$ model for irreversible bimolecular reactions which was introduced in [arXiv:0903.1298]. The formulae relating the experimentally measurable quantities (reaction rate constants and diffusion constants) with the algorithm parameters are derived. The probability of geminate recombination is also investigated.
Simple bimolecular reactions $A_1+A_2\rightleftharpoons A_3+A_4$ are analyzed within the framework of the Boltzmann equation in the initial stage of a chemical reaction with the system far from chemical equilibrium. The Chapman-Enskog methodology is applied to determine the coefficients of the expansion of the distribution functions in terms of Sonine polynomials for peculiar molecular velocities. The results are applied to the reaction $H_2+Cl\rightleftharpoons HCl+H$, and the influence of the non-Maxwellian distribution and of the activation-energy dependent reactive cross sections upon the …
The power-law TST reaction rate coefficient for an elementary bimolecular reaction is studied when the reaction takes place in a nonequilibrium system with power-law distributions. We derive a generalized TST rate coefficient, which not only depends on a power-law parameter but also on the reaction coordinate frequency of transition state. The numerical analyses show a very strong dependence of TST rate coefficient on the power-law parameter, and clearly indicate that a tiny deviation from unity in the parameter (thus from the Boltzmann-Gibbs distribution) would result in significant changes i…
We investigate the influence of a stochastically fluctuating step-barrier potential on bimolecular reaction rates by exact analytical theory and stochastic simulations. We demonstrate that the system exhibits a new resonant reaction behavior with rate enhancement if an appropriately defined fluctuation decay length is of the order of the system size. Importantly, we find that in the proximity of resonance the standard reciprocal additivity law for diffusion and surface reaction rates is violated due to the dynamical coupling of multiple kinetic processes. Together, these findings may have impo…
From a rigorous multichannel quantum-defect formulation of bimolecular processes, we derive a fully quantal and analytic model for the total rate of exoergic bimolecular reactions and/or inelastic processes that is applicable over a wide range of temperatures including the ultracold regime. The theory establishes a connection between the ultracold chemistry and the regular chemistry by showing that the same theory that gives the quantum threshold behavior agrees with the classical Gorin model at higher temperatures. In between, it predicts that the rates for identical bosonic molecules and dis…
The kinetic processes in nanoparticle-based catalysis are dominated by large fluctuations and spatiotemporal heterogeneities, in particular for diffusion-influenced reactions which are far from equilibrium. Here, we report results from particle-resolved reaction-diffusion simulations of steady-state bimolecular reactions catalyzed on the surface of a single, perfectly spherical nanoparticle. We study various reactant adsorption and diffusion regimes, in particular considering the crowding effects of the reaction products. Our simulations reveal that fluctuations, significant coverage cross-cor…
We describe a general theory for surface-catalyzed bimolecular reactions in responsive nanoreactors, catalytically active nanoparticles coated by a stimuli-responsive 'gating' shell, whose permeability controls the activity of the process. We address two archetypal scenarios encountered in this system: The first, where two species diffusing from a bulk solution react at the catalyst's surface; the second where only one of the reactants diffuses from the bulk while the other one is produced at the nanoparticle surface, e.g., by light conversion. We find that in both scenarios the total catalyti…
The transition states and dividing surfaces used to find rate constants for bimolecular reactions are shown to undergo qualitative changes, known as Morse bifurcations, and to exist for a large range of energies, not just immediately above the critical energy for first connection between reactants and products. Specifically, we consider capture between two molecules and the associated transition states for the case of non-zero angular momentum and general attitudes. The capture between an atom and a diatom, and then a general molecule are presented, providing concrete examples of Morse bifurca…
Femtochemistry techniques have been instrumental in accessing the short time scales necessary to probe transient intermediates in chemical reactions. Here we take the contrasting approach of prolonging the lifetime of an intermediate by preparing reactant molecules in their lowest ro-vibronic quantum state at ultralow temperatures, thereby drastically reducing the number of exit channels accessible upon their mutual collision. Using ionization spectroscopy and velocity-map imaging of a trapped gas of potassium-rubidium molecules at a temperature of 500~nK, we directly observe reactants, interm…
Advances in atomic, molecular, and optical (AMO) physics techniques allowed the cooling of simple molecules down to the ultracold regime ($\lesssim$ 1 mK), and opened the opportunities to study chemical reactions with unprecedented levels of control. This review covers recent developments in studying bimolecular chemistry at ultralow temperatures. We begin with a brief overview of methods for producing, manipulating, and detecting ultracold molecules. We then survey experimental works that exploit the controllability of ultracold molecules to probe and modify their long-range interactions. Fur…
Here, steady-state reaction networks are inspected from the viewpoint of individual tagged molecules jumping among their chemical states upon the occurrence of reactive events. Such an agent-based viewpoint is useful for selectively characterizing the behavior of functional molecules, especially in the presence of bimolecular processes. We present the tools for simulating the jump dynamics both in the macroscopic limit and in the small-volume sample where the numbers of reactive molecules are of the order of few units with an inherently stochastic kinetics. The focus is on how an ideal spatial…
We present a first temperature dependence and kinetic isotope effect study on the reaction of C_2(a^3Pi_u) with methanol. The bimolecular rate constants for a series of methanol isotopomers have been measured as a function of temperature between 293 and 673 K. The observed positive temperature dependences as well as deuterium kinetic isotope effects permit determination of the reaction mechanism as a site-specific hydrogen abstraction from the methyl site rather than from the hydroxyl site.
Equilibrium Constant Differential Equations (ECDE) are derived for several nanoconfined elemental bimolecular reactions in the frameworks of statistical mechanics and the ideal gas model. The ECDEs complement the well-known equilibrium-constant ordinary equations that are used for macroscopic systems. Solving the ECDE numerically or analytically furnishes the average reaction extent, as well as its variance and skewness. This original theoretical-computational methodology fills the gap in studies of nanochemical equilibrium providing a consistent and convenient alternative to derivations based…
Quantum control of reactive systems has enabled microscopic probes of underlying interaction potentials, the opening of novel reaction pathways, and the alteration of reaction rates using quantum statistics. However, extending such control to the quantum states of reaction outcomes remains challenging. In this work, we realize this goal through the nuclear spin degree of freedom, a result which relies on the conservation of nuclear spins throughout the reaction. Using resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization spectroscopy to investigate the products formed in bimolecular reactions between ultr…
The power-law reaction rate coefficient for the barrierless reactions is studied if the reactions take place in systems with power-law distributions, and a generalized rate formula for the barrierless reactions in Gorin model is derived. We show that due to barrierless, different from those for bimolecular and unimolcular reactions, the power-law rate coefficient for the barrierless reactions does not have the factor of power-law distribution function and thus it is not very strongly dependent on the nu-parameter. Four barrierless reactions are taken as the application examples to calculate th…

We presents a fully quantal version of the Langevin model for the total rate of exoergic ion-molecule reactions or inelastic processes. The model, which is derived from a rigorous multichannel quantum-defect formulation of bimolecular processes, agrees with the classical Langevin model at sufficiently high temperatures. It also gives the first analytic description of ion-molecule reactions and inelastic processes in the ultracold regime where the quantum nature of the relative motion between the reactants becomes important.
We present a temperature dependence study on the gas phase reactions of the C$_2$({\it a}$^3Pi_u$) radical with a selected series of saturated alkanes (C$_2$H$_6$, C$_3$H$_8$, n-C$_4$H$_10$, i-C$_4$H$_10$, and n-C$_6$H$_14$) by means of pulsed laser photolysis/laser-induced fluorescence technique. The bimolecular rate constants for these reactions were obtained between 298 and 673 K. A pronounced negative temperature effect was observed for n-C$_4$H$_10$, i-C$_4$H$_10$, and n-C$_6$H$_14$ and interpreted in terms of steric hindrance of the more reactive secondary or tertiary C-H bonds by less r…
Artificial Thermalization in Ring-Polymer Molecular Dynamics: The Breakdown of RPMD for Gas-Phase Reactions with Pre-Reactive Complexes and How to Fix It
We apply Thermostatted Ring Polymer Molecular Dynamics (TRPMD), a recently-proposed approximate quantum dynamics method, to the computation of thermal reaction rates. Its short-time Transition-State Theory (TST) limit is identical to rigorous Quantum Transition-State Theory, and we find that its long-time limit is independent of the location of the dividing surface. TRPMD rate theory is then applied to one-dimensional model systems, the atom-diatom bimolecular reactions H+H$_2$, D+MuH and F+H$_2$, and the prototypical polyatomic reaction H+CH$_4$. Above the crossover temperature, the TRPMD rat…
In modeling the interior of cells by simulating a reaction-diffusion master equation over a grid of compartments, one employs the assumption that the copy numbers of various chemical species are small, discrete quantities. We show that in this case, textbook expressions for the change in Gibbs free energy accompanying a chemical reaction or diffusion between adjacent compartments become inaccurate. We derive exact expressions for these free energy changes under the assumption of discrete copy numbers and illustrate how these expressions reduce to the textbook expressions under a series of succ…
Superoxide reductase (SOR) is a small metalloenzyme that catalyzes reduction of O(2)(*)(-) to H(2)O(2) and thus provides an antioxidant mechanism against superoxide radicals. Its active site contains an unusual mononuclear ferrous center, which is very efficient during electron transfer to O(2)(*)(-) [Lombard, M., Fontecave, M., Touati, D., and Nivi{è}re, V. (2000) J. Biol. Chem. 275, 115-121]. The reaction of the enzyme from Desulfoarculus baarsii with superoxide was studied by pulse radiolysis methods. The first step is an extremely fast bimolecular reaction of superoxide reductase with supe…
The molecular energies of chemical systems have been successfully calculated on quantum computers, however, more attention has been paid to the dynamic process of chemical reactions in practical application, especially in catalyst design, material synthesis. Due to the limited the capabilities of the noisy intermediate scale quantum (NISQ) devices, directly simulating the reaction dynamics and determining reaction pathway still remain a challenge. Here we develop the ab initio molecular dynamics based on quantum computing to simulate reaction dynamics by extending correlated sampling approach.…
The final step of the water formation network on interstellar grain surfaces starting from the H + O$_2$ route is the reaction between H and H$_2$O$_2$. This reaction is known to have a high activation energy and therefore at low temperatures it can only proceed via tunneling. To date, however, no rate constants are available at temperatures below 200 K. In this work, we use instanton theory to compute rate constants for the title reaction with and without isotopic substitutions down to temperatures of 50 K. The calculations are based on density functional theory, with additional benchmarks fo…
This Feature Article presents an overview of the current status of Ring Polymer Molecular Dynamics (RPMD) rate theory. We first analyze the RPMD approach and its connection to quantum transition-state theory. We then focus on its practical applications to prototypical chemical reactions in the gas phase, which demonstrate how accurate and reliable RPMD is for calculating thermal chemical reaction rate coefficients in multifarious cases. This review serves as an important checkpoint in RPMD rate theory development, which shows that RPMD is shifting from being just one of recent novel ideas to a…
The heterogeneous oxidation reaction of single aqueous ascorbic acid (AH$_2$) aerosol particles with gas-phase ozone was investigated in this study utilizing aerosol optical tweezers with Raman spectroscopy. The measured liquid-phase bimolecular rate coefficients of the AH$_2$ + O$_3$ reaction exhibit a significant pH dependence, and the corresponding values at ionic strength 0.2 M are $(3.1 \pm 2.0) \times 10^5$ M$^{-1}$s$^{-1}$ and $(1.2 \pm 0.6) \times 10^7$ M$^{-1}$s$^{-1}$ for pH $\approx$ 2 and 6, respectively. These results measured in micron-sized droplets agree with those from previou…
Quantum dynamics of the Li+HF-->H+LiF reaction at ultralow temperatures
报道了低温和超低温下Li+HF(v=0,1,j=0)-->H+LiF(v ',j')双分子散射过程的量子力学计算。利用最近得到的高精度X2 A '电子基态势能面,对总角动量为零的情况进行了计算.对于Li+HF(v=0,j=0),反应主要是由于Li原子的亚稳态的衰变而引起的共振。F-H范德华复合体。通过计算准束缚态的本征能来分配这些共振。我们还发现,虽然化学反应性大大提高了振动激发的共振得到大部分清洗振动激发HF与Li原子的反应。此外,我们发现,在低能量下,由于形成了相当深的束缚范德华络合物和相对较重的氟原子的隧穿效率较低,反应被显着抑制。
The kinetics of bimolecular reactions in solution depends, among other factors, on intermolecular forces such as steric repulsion or electrostatic interaction. Microscopically, a pair of molecules first has to meet by diffusion before the reaction can take place. In this work, we establish an extension of Doi's volume reaction model to molecules interacting via pair potentials, which is a key ingredient for interacting-particle-based reaction-diffusion (iPRD) simulations. As a central result, we relate model parameters and macroscopic reaction rate constants in this situation. We solve the cor…
The hydrogen abstraction reaction between H and H$_2$S, yielding HS and H$_2$ as products, has been studied within the framework of interstellar surface chemistry. High-temperature rate constants up to 2000 K are calculated in the gas phase and are in agreement with previously reported values. Subsequently low-temperature rate constants down to 55 K are presented for the first time that are of interest to astrochemistry, i.e., covering both bimolecular and unimolecular reaction mechanisms. For this, a so-called implicit surface model is used. Strictly speaking, this is a structural gas-phase m…
Semiclassical instanton theory is a form of quantum transition-state theory which can be applied to computing thermal reaction rates for complex molecular systems including quantum tunneling effects. There have been a number of attempts to extend the theory to treat microcanonical rates. However, the previous formulations are either computationally unfeasible for large systems due to an explicit sum over states or they involve extra approximations which make them less reliable. We propose a robust and practical microcanonical formulation called density-of-states instanton theory, which avoids …
We calculated reaction rate constants including atom tunneling for the hydrogen abstraction reaction CH3OH+H -> CH2OH+H2 with the instanton method. The potential energy was fitted by a neural network, that was trained to UCCSD(T)-F12/VTZ-F12 data. Bimolecular gas-phase rate constants were calculated using microcanonic instanton theory. All H/D isotope patterns on the CH3 group and the incoming H atom are studied. Unimolecular reaction rate constants, representing the reaction on a surface, down to 30 K, are presented for all isotope patterns. At 30 K they range from 4100 for the replacement of…
Ultracold molecules offer remarkable opportunities to study chemical reactions at nearly zero temperature. Although significant progresses have been achieved in exploring ultracold bimolecular reactions, the investigations are usually limited to measurements of the overall loss rates of the reactants. Detection of the reaction products will shed new light on understanding the reaction mechanism and provide a unique opportunity to study the state-to-state reaction dynamics. Here we report on the direct observation of an exoergic atom-exchange reaction in an ultracold atom-dimer mixture. Both th…
Ring polymer molecular dynamics (RPMD) is an accurate method for calculating thermal chemical reaction rates. It has recently been discovered that low-temperature calculations are strongly affected by the simulation parameters. Here, for the thermally activated reaction DH + H -> D + H2, we calculate the RPMD rate constants at T = 50, 100, and 300 K and demonstrate that for T >= 100 K the standard input parameters yield accurate results, but at low temperatures (e.g., 50 K) one must increase the asymptotic distance and force constant, and decrease the umbrella integration step.
We present a combined experimental and theoretical study focussing on the quantum tunneling of atoms in the reaction between CH4 and OH. The importance of this reaction pathway is derived by investigating isotope substituted analogs. Quantitative reaction rates needed for astrochemical models at low temperature are currently unavailable both in the solid state and in the gas phase. Here, we study tunneling effects upon hydrogen abstraction in CH4 + OH by focusing on two reactions: CH4 + OD -> CH3 + HDO and CD4 + OH -> CD3 + HDO. The experimental study shows that the solid-state reaction rate R…
The reaction-diffusion master equation (RDME) is a standard modelling approach for understanding stochastic and spatial chemical kinetics. An inherent assumption is that molecules are point-like. Here we introduce the crowded reaction-diffusion master equation (cRDME) which takes into account volume exclusion effects on stochastic kinetics due to a finite molecular radius. We obtain an exact closed form solution of the RDME and of the cRDME for a general chemical system in equilibrium conditions. The difference between the two solutions increases with the ratio of molecular diameter to the com…
A mathematical model to describe the emulsion polymerization kinetics of co- and ter-polymerizations is developed. The model is based on the classical Smith-Ewart (SE) equations, within the pseudo-homopolymerization approach, with state-of-the-art models for radical entry and desorption. For co- and ter-polymerizations there are unknown parameters in the model which are related to monomer-specific gel-effect coefficients, that are needed to compute the bimolecular termination reaction rates. The unknown parameters are determined through extensive calibration of the model on literature data for…

Experimental studies of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at nitrogen doped graphene electrodes have reported a remarkably low overpotential, on the order of 0.5 V, similar to Pt based electrodes. Theoretical calculations using density functional theory have lent support for this claim. However, other measurements have indicated that transition metal impurities are actually responsible for the ORR activity, thereby raising questions about the reliability of both the experiments and the calculations. In order to assess the accuracy of the theoretical calculations, various generalized gradient…
In this work, we present the results of our investigation into the chemistry of Z- and E-cyanomethanimine (HNCHCN), both of which are possible precursors to the nucleobase adenine. Ab initio quantum chemical calculations for a number of reactions with atomic hydrogen were carried out. We find that the reaction H + Z/E-HNCHCN leading both to H-addition as well as H$_2$-abstraction proceed via similar short-range barriers with bimolecular rate coefficients on the order of $\sim10^{-17}$ cm$^{3}$ s$^{-1}$. These results were then incorporated into astrochemical models and used in simulations of t…
