Interior stagnation point flows of viscoelastic liquids arise in a wide variety of applications including extensional viscometry, polymer processing and microfluidics. Experimentally, these flows have long been known to exhibit instabilities, but the mechanisms underlying them have not previously been elucidated. We computationally demonstrate the existence of a supercritical oscillatory instability of low-Reynolds number viscoelastic flow in a two-dimensional cross-slot geometry. The fluctuations are closely associated with the "birefringent strand" of highly stretched polymer chains associated with the outflow from the stagnation point at high Weissenberg number. Additionally, we describe the mechanism of instability, which arises from the coupling of flow with extensional stresses and their steep gradients in the stagnation point region.
We report evidence of irregular unsteady flow of two-dimensional polymer solutions in the absence of inertia in cross-slot geometry using numerical simulations of Oldroyd-B model. By exploring the transition to time-dependent flow versus both the fluid elasticity and the polymer concentration, we find periodic behaviour close to the instability threshold and more complex flows at larger elasticity, in agreement with experimental findings. For high enough elasticity we obtain dynamics pointing to elastic turbulence, with temporal spectra of velocity fluctuations showing a power-law decay, of ex…
We study the electrokinetic flow of viscoelastic fluids subjected to an oscillatory pressure gradient, and particularly focus on the resonance behaviors in the flow. The governing equations are restricted to linear regime so that the velocity and streaming potential fields can be solved analytically. Based on the interaction of viscoelastic shear waves, we explain the mechanism of resonance, and derive a critical Deborah number Dec = 1/4 which dictates the occurrence of resonance. Using the Maxwell fluid model, we show that the resonance enhances electrokinetic effects and results in a dramati…
It is well known that a boundary layer develops along an infinite plate under oscillatory motion in a Newtonian fluid. In this work, this oscillatory boundary layer theory is generalized to the case of linear viscoelastic(LVE) flow. We demonstrate that the dynamics in LVE are generically different than those for flow of similar settings in Newtonian fluids, in several aspects. These new discoveries are expected to have consequences on related engineering applications. Mimicking the theory for Stokes oscillatory layers along an infinite plate in Newtonian flow, we derive a similar oscillatory b…
The viscoelastic fluids are usually the blends of a polymeric solute and a Newtonian solvent. In the presence of a temperature gradient, stratification of these solutes can take place via the Soret effect. Here, we investigate the classical Marangoni instability problem for a thin viscoelastic film considering this binary aspect of the fluid. The film, bounded above by a deformable free surface, is subjected to heating from below by a solid substrate. Linear stability analysis performed numerically for perturbations of finite wavelength (short-wave perturbations) reveals that both monotonic an…
Periodically-driven flows are known to generate non-zero, time-averaged fluxes of heat or solute species, due to the interactions of out-of-phase velocity and temperature/concentration fields, respectively. Herein, we investigate such transport (a form of the well-known Taylor--Aris dispersion) in the gap between two parallel plates, one of which oscillates vertically, generating a time-periodic squeeze flow of either a newtonian or Maxwellian fluid. Using the method of multiple time-scale homogenization, the mass/heat balance equation describing transport in this flow is reduced to a one-dime…
Fast spectral solver for viscoelastic structures under oscillatory flow in free space or wall-bounded domains: applications to quartz crystal microbalance and force spectroscopy
We study the Marangoni instability in a thin polymeric liquid film heated from the free surface. Polymeric solutions are usually the binary mixture of a Newtonian solvent with polymeric solute and exhibit viscoelastic behaviour. In the presence of a temperature gradient, stratification of these polymeric solutes can take place via the Soret effect, which may give rise to the solutocapillary effect at the free surface. Considering the Soret effect and incorporating the effects of gravity, here we analyse the stability characteristics of this polymeric thin film bounded between its deformable fr…
The Oldroyd-B model has been used extensively to predict a host of instabilities in shearing flows of viscoelastic fluids, often realized experimentally using polymer solutions. The present review, written on the occasion of the birth centenary of James Oldroyd, provides an overview of instabilities found across major classes of shearing flows. These comprise (i) the canonical rectilinear shearing flows including plane Couette, plane and pipe Poiseuille flows; (ii) viscometric shearing flows with curved streamlines such as those in the Taylor-Couette, cone-and-plate and parallel-plate geometri…
We use a differential constitutive equation to model the flow of a viscoelastic flow in a cross-slot geometry, which is known to exhibit bistability above a critical flow rate. The novelty lies in two asymmetric modifications to the geometry, which causes a change in the bifurcation diagram such that one of the stable solutions becomes disconnected from the solution at low flow speeds. First we show that it is possible to mirror one of the modifications such that the system can be forced to the disconnected solution. Then we show that a slow decrease of the flow rate, can cause the system to g…
