An expression for the extrapolated fusion gain G = Pfusion /5 Pheat (Pfusion being the total fusion power and Pheat the total heating power) of ITER in terms of the confinement improvement factor (H) and the normalised beta (betaN) is derived in this paper. It is shown that an increase in normalised beta can be expected to have a negative or neutral influence on G depending on the chosen confinement scaling law. Figures of merit like H betaN / q95^2 should be used with care, since large values of this quantity do not guarantee high values of G, and might not be attainable with the heating power installed on ITER.
The sputtering of inside wall components of tokamaks can lead to the injection of supersaturated vapour in the plasma edge. The resulting condensation favours the formation of clusters which can give rise to solid particulates by further accretion. Sputtering discharges are proposed to have highlight on the formation of carbonaceous dust observed in the tokamaks with graphite based wall components. The flux of the sputtered carbon atoms is evaluated in the conditions of our laboratory discharges as well as the evolution of their energy distribution. It is shown that a cooling mechanism occurs …
Saskatchewan Torus-Modified (STOR-M) is a small tokamak, well known for various fusion related basic experimental studies such as edge turbulent heating, different instabilities, AC (alternating current) tokamak operation, Ohmic H-mode triggering by the electrode biasing, fueling and momentum injection by Compact Torus (CT) injection, and effects of Resonance Magnetic Perturbations (RMP), among others. Some of those experiments require real time visualization of magnetic surface reconstructions either through EFIT or quick analyses and visualization of experimental data during experiments. Rec…

A model for tokamak discharge through deep learning has been done on a superconducting long-pulse tokamak (EAST). This model can use the control signals (i.e. Neutral Beam Injection (NBI), Ion Cyclotron Resonance Heating (ICRH), etc) to model normal discharge without the need for doing real experiments. By using the data-driven methodology, we exploit the temporal sequence of control signals for a large set of EAST discharges to develop a deep learning model for modeling discharge diagnostic signals, such as electron density $n_{e}$, store energy $W_{mhd}$ and loop voltage $V_{loop}$. An analytic theory of edge localized mode (ELM) suppression in an H-mode tokamak plasma via the application of a static, externally generated, resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP) is presented. This theory is based on the plausible hypothesis that mode penetration at the top of the pedestal is a necessary and sufficient condition for the RMP-induced suppression of ELMs. The theory also makes use of a number of key insights gained in a recent publication (Fitzpatrick R 2019). The first insight is that the response of the plasma to a particular helical component of the RMP, in the immediate vici…
In this work, a purely data-driven discharge prediction model was developed and tested without integrating any data or results from simulations. The model was developed based on the experimental data from the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) campaign 2010-2020 discharges and can predict the actual plasma current $I_{p}$, normalized beta $β_{n}$, toroidal beta $β_{t}$, beta poloidal $β_{p}$, electron density $n_{e}$, store energy $W_{mhd}$, loop voltage $V_{loop}$, elongation at plasma boundary $κ$, internal inductance $l_{i}$, q at magnetic axis $q_{0}$, and q at 95% flux s…
The plasma response to an externally generated, static, n=2, resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP) in the pedestal region of DIII-D discharge #158115 is investigated. In this particular discharge, the resonant amplitudes of the RMP are modulated in a cycloidal manner at a frequency of 1 Hz. Adopting the plausible hypothesis that mode penetration at the top of the pedestal is a necessary and sufficient condition for the RMP-induced suppression of edge localized modes (ELMs), recent cylindrical, nonlinear, reduced-magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) simulations performed by Hu, Nazikian, et al., (2019) c…
For ITER-relevant runaway electron studies, such as suppression, mitigation, termination and/or control of runaway beam, obtaining the runaway electrons after the disruption is important. In this paper we report on the first achieved discharges with post-disruptive runaway electron beam, entitled "runaway plateau", in the COMPASS tokamak. The runaway plateau is produced by massive gas injection of argon. Almost all of the disruptions with runaway electron plateaus occurred during the plasma current ramp-up phase. Comparison between the Ar injection discharges with and without plateau has been …
Through a systematically developed theory, we demonstrate that the motion of instanton identified in [Y. Z. Zhang, Z. Y. Liu, T. Xie, S. M. Mahajan, and J. Liu, Physics of Plasmas 24, 122304 (2017)] is highly correlated to the intermittent excitation and propagation of geodesic acoustic mode (GAM) that are observed in tokamaks. While many numerical simulations have observed the phenomena, it is the first theory that reveals the physical mechanism behind GAM intermittent excitation and propagation. The preceding work is based on the micro-turbulence associated with toroidal ion temperature grad…
There are two distinct phases in the evolution of drift wave envelope in the presence of zonal flow. A long-lived standing wave phase, which we call the Caviton, and a short-lived traveling wave phase (in radial direction) we call the Instanton. For drift wave turbulence driven by ion temperature gradient mode (ITG), these two stages of dynamics were displayed in [Zhang Y Z, Liu Z Y, Xie T, Mahajan S M and Liu J 2017 Physics of Plasmas 24 122304]. In this paper we show that the dynamical attributes of ITG turbulence are readily replicated when the turbulence rotates in the electron direction; …
An international experiment, ITER is proposed as the next essential and critical step on the path to demonstrating the scientific and technological feasibility of fusion energy. ITER would give unique opportunities to explore, in reactor relevant conditions, the physics of α-particle heating, plasma turbulence and turbulent transport, stability limits to the plasma pressure and exhaust of power and particles. Improved understanding of the physical processes occurring in tokamak plasmas give enhanced confidence in ITER achieving its goals. In particular, progress has been made in research …

Predicting disruptions across different tokamaks is a great obstacle to overcome. Future tokamaks can hardly tolerate disruptions at high performance discharge. Few disruption discharges at high performance can hardly compose an abundant training set, which makes it difficult for current data-driven methods to obtain an acceptable result. A machine learning method capable of transferring a disruption prediction model trained on one tokamak to another is required to solve the problem. The key is a disruption prediction model containing a feature extractor that is able to extract common disrupti…
A first-principles scaling law, based on turbulent transport considerations, and a multi-machine database of density limit discharges from the ASDEX Upgrade, JET and TCV tokamaks, show that the increase of the boundary turbulent transport with the plasma collisionality sets the maximum density achievable in tokamaks. This scaling law shows a strong dependence on the heating power, therefore predicting for ITER a significantly larger safety margin than the Greenwald empirical scaling (Greenwald et al, Nucl. Fusion, 28(12), 1988) in case of unintentional H-L transition.
Fusion power production in tokamaks uses discharge configurations that risk producing strong Type I Edge Localized Modes. The largest of these modes will likely increase impurities in the plasma and potentially damage plasma facing components such as the protective heat and waste divertor. Machine learning-based prediction and control may provide for online mitigation of these damaging modes before they grow too large to suppress. To that end, large labeled datasets are required for supervised training of machine learning models. We present an algorithm that achieves 97.7% precision when autom…

The Tore Supra real time measurements and control (RTMC) system has been upgraded to address schemes dedicated to long pulse operation with simultaneous control of an increasing number of plasma parameters. This includes plasma equilibrium control with possib…
Steering tokamak plasmas is commonly viewed as a way to avoid disruptions and runaway electrons. Plasma steering sounds as safe as driving to work but will be shown to more closely resemble driving at high speed through a dense fog on an icy road. The long time required to terminate an ITER discharge compared to time over which dangers can be foreseen is analogous to driving in a dense fog. The difficulty of regaining plasma control if it is lost resembles driving on an icy road. Disruptions and runaways are associated with three issues -- a solution to one tends to complicate the solution to …

Injection of relatively high density spheromaks with significant helicity-content into a tokamak has been proposed as a means for fueling and current drive. The CHI (Co-axial Helicity Injection) device was devised to inject current to the STOR-M tokamak. Various circuit modifications were made to the CHI controls, enabling testing of various injection configurations. The charge/discharge circuits for CT formation/acceleration and stuffing field were modified, and the power supplies and power converters were replaced. Various modifications were implemented to solve the original slow bank trigge…
Tearing modes in tokamaks typically rotate while small and then lock at a fixed location when larger. Research on present-day devices has focused almost exclusively on stabilisation of rotating modes, as it has been considered imperative to avoid locked modes. However, in larger devices, stabilisation during the rotating phase is made difficult by fast locking at small island widths, and large broadening of the stabilising wave-driven current profile. In contrast, the smaller island width at locking not only mitigates the deleterious consequences of locked modes, but also permits their efficie…
The analytic theory presented in Paper I is converted into a form convenient for numerical analysis. A fast and accurate code has been written using this numerical formulation. The results are presented by first defining a reference set of physical parameters based on experimental data from high performance discharges. Numerically obtained scaling relations of maximum achievable elongation versus inverse aspect ratio are obtained for various values of poloidal beta, wall radius and feedback capability parameter in ranges near the reference values. It is also shown that each value of maximum el…
In this work we demostrate using a two-temperature volume average 0D model that robust stabilization, with regard the hellium ash confinement time, of the burn conditions of a tokamak reactor with the ITER FEAT design parameters can be achieved using Radial Basis Neural Networks (RBNN). Alpha particle thermalization time delay is taken into account in this model. The control actions implemented by means of a RBNN, include the modulation of the DT refueling rate, a neutral He-4 injection beam and auxiliary heating powers to ions and to electrons; all of them constrained to lie within allowable …
Operation of a tokamak with q edge around 2 is discussed in this paper. It is shown that an L mode operation at a relatively high toroidal magnetic field can produce confinement conditions similar to ITER-FEAT.

A change of the particle density (by gas puff, pellets or impurity seeding) during the plasma discharge in tokamak produces a radial current and implicitly a torque and rotation that can modify the state of confinement. After ionization the newly born ions will evolve toward the periodic neoclassical orbits (trapped or circulating) but the first part of their excursion, which precedes the periodicity, is an effective radial current. It is short, spatially finite and unique for each new ion, but multiplied by the rate of ionization and it can produce a substantial total radial current. The asso…
The key basis for tokamak plasma disruption modeling is to understand how currents flow to the plasma facing surfaces during plasma disruption events. In ITER tokamak, the occurrence of a limited number of major disruptions will definitively damage the chamber with no possibility to restore the device. In the current exchange plasma-wall-plasma, according to the Helmholtz decomposition theorem, our surface current density in the conducting shell - the unknown of our problem - being a vector field twice continuously differentiable in 3D, has been splited into two components: an irrotational (cu…
During a tokamak discharge, the plasma can vary between different confinement regimes: Low (L), High (H) and, in some cases, a temporary (intermediate state), called Dithering (D). In addition, while the plasma is in H mode, Edge Localized Modes (ELMs) can occur. The automatic detection of changes between these states, and of ELMs, is important for tokamak operation. Motivated by this, and by recent developments in Deep Learning (DL), we developed and compared two methods for automatic detection of the occurrence of L-D-H transitions and ELMs, applied on data from the TCV tokamak. These method…
The XGC1 edge gyrokinetic code is used for a high fidelity prediction for the width of the heat-flux to divertor plates in attached plasma condition. The simulation results are validated against the empirical scaling $λ_q \propto B_P^{-γ}$ obtained from present tokamak devices, where $λ_q$ is the divertor heat-flux width mapped to the outboard midplane and $γ_q=1.19$ as defined by T. Eich et al. [Nucl. Fusion 53 (2013) 093031], and $B_P$ is the magnitude of the poloidal magnetic field at outboard midplane separatrix surface. This empirical scaling predicts $λ_q \leq 1mm$ when extrapolated to I…
We present simulated figures of the diverted magnetic field lines of the tokamak ITER, obtained by numerically integrating a Hamiltonian model with electrical currents in five wire loops and control coils. We show evidences of a sticky island embedded in the chaotic region near the divertor plates, which traps magnetic field lines for many toroidal turns increasing their connection lengths to these plates.
Ion cyclotron emission (ICE) was the first collective radiative instability, driven by confined fusion-born ions, observed from deuterium-tritium plasmas in JET and TFTR. ICE comprises strongly suprathermal emission, which has spectral peaks at multiple ion cyclotron harmonic frequencies as evaluated at the outer mid-plane edge of tokamak plasmas. The measured intensity of ICE spectral peaks scaled linearly with measured fusion reactivity in JET. In other large tokamak plasmas, ICE is currently used as an indicator of fast ions physics. The excitation mechanism for ICE is the magnetoacoustic c…
Fast particle-driven waves in the ion cyclotron frequency range (ion cyclotron emission or ICE) have provided a valuable diagnostic of confined and escaping fast ions in many tokamaks. This is a passive, non-invasive diagnostic that would be compatible with the high radiation environment of deuterium-tritium plasmas in ITER, and could provide important information on fusion α-particles and beam ions in that device. In JET, ICE from confined fusion products scaled linearly with fusion reaction rate over six orders of magnitude and provided evidence that α-particle confinement was close to class…
In the Alcator C-Mod tokamak, runaway electron (RE) experiments have been performed during low density, flattop plasma discharges at three magnetic fields: 2.7, 5.4, and 7.8 T, the last being the highest field to-date at which REs have been generated and measured in a tokamak. Time-evolving synchrotron radiation spectra were measured in the visible wavelength range (~300-1000 nm) by two absolutely-calibrated spectrometers viewing co- and counter-plasma current directions. In this paper, a test particle model is implemented to predict momentum-space and density evolutions of REs on the magnetic…
The SMARDDA software library is used to model plasma interaction with complex engineered surfaces. A simple flux-tube model of power deposition necessitates the following of magnetic fieldlines until they meet geometry taken from a CAD (Computer Aided Design) database. Application is made to 1) models of ITER tokamak limiter geometry and 2) MASTU tokamak divertor designs, illustrating the accuracy and effectiveness of SMARDDA, even in the presence of significant nonaxisymmetric ripple field. SMARDDA's ability to exchange data with CAD databases and its speed of execution also give it the poten…
Mass flows and radial electric field driven by edge poloidal density asymmetries can be used as a highly effective control mechanism for the edge and thus global confinement in tokamaks. The underlying physics can be demonstrated entirely within a simple magnetohydrodynamic equilibrium model, without resorting to sophisticated and usually collisionality-dependent neoclassical physics arguments. As an example, strong dependence of the low to high (LH) transition power threshold on the magnetic topology, an experimental observation still poorly understood, can be easily explained within this fra…
This paper deals with the new spectral and microturbulence experimental data and their analysis, which show, that the radial electric field Er generated at the LH heating (LHH) in the FT-2 is high enough to form the transport barriers. The ETB is formed when LHH is switched off. The radial fluctuation-induced EB drift flux densities near LCFS in SOL are measured at two different poloidal angles. For this purpose two Langmuir probes located at low and high field sides of the torus are used. Registration of the poloidal and radial components of the electric field and density fluctuations…
A brief review is given of the progress in studying the long-lived filaments (LLFs) in fusion plasmas (tokamaks, Z-pinch, plasma focus). The paper reports on (i) resolving the fine structure of LLFs, and (ii) verification of our hypothesis (1998) which suggested the LLFs to possess a microsolid skeleton. The recent proof-of-concept studies showed the presence of tubular and cartwheel-like structures in (i) various dust deposits in tokamak T-10, in the range 10 nm - 10 mcm, and (ii) visible light images of plasma, in the range 100 mcm - 10 cm, at initial stage of discharge (e.g., before appeara…
Hydrogen majority plasmas will be used in the initial non-activated phase of ITER operation. Optimizing ion cyclotron resonance heating (ICRH) in such scenarios will help in achieving H-mode in these plasmas. Past JET experiments with the carbon wall revealed a significant impact of intrinsic impurities on the ICRH performance in (3He)-H plasmas relevant for the full-field initial ITER phase. High plasma contamination with carbon impurities resulted in the appearance of a supplementary mode conversion layer and significant reduction in the transition concentration of 3He minority ions, defined…
Most tokamak devices including ITER exploit the D-T reaction due to its high reactivity, but the wall loading caused by the associated 14MeV neutrons will limit the further development of fusion performance at high beta. To explore p-11B fusion cycle, a tokamak system code is extended to incorporate the relativistic bremsstrahlung since the temperature of electrons is approaching the rest energy of electron. By choosing an optimum p-11B mix and ion temperature, some representative sets of parameters of p-11B tokamak reactor, whose fusion gain exceeds 1, have been found under the thermal wall l…
ITER as the next-level fusion device is intended to reliably produce more fusion power than required for sustainably heating its plasma. Modeling has been an essential part of the ITER design and for planning of future experimental campaigns. In a tokamak or stellarator plasma discharge, impurities play a significant role, especially in the edge region. Residual gases, eroded wall material, or even intentionally seeded gases all heavily influence the confinement and, thus, the overall fusion performance. Nitrogen is such a gas envisaged to be seeded into a discharge plasma. By modeling the imp…
This paper shows experimental results from the TCV tokamak that indicate plasma-molecule interactions involving $D_2^+$ and possibly $D^-$ play an important role as sinks of energy (through hydrogenic radiation as well as dissociation) and particles during divertor detachment if low target temperatures ($< 3$ eV) are achieved. Both molecular activated recombination (MAR) and ion source reduction due to a power limitation effect are shown to be important in reducing the ion target flux during a density ramp. In contrast, the electron-ion recombination (EIR) ion sink is too small to play an impo…
The high-k ($7 \lesssim k_{\bot} ρ_i \lesssim 11$) wavenumber spectrum of density fluctuations has been measured for the first time in MAST [B. Lloyd et al, Nucl. Fusion 43, 1665 (2003)]. This was accomplished with the first implementation of Doppler backscattering (DBS) for core measurements in a spherical tokamak. DBS has become a well-established and versatile diagnostic technique for the measurement of intermediate-k ($k_{\bot} ρ_i \sim 1$, and higher) density fluctuations and flows in magnetically confined fusion experiments. A novel implementation with 2D steering was necessary to enable…
A natural fueling mechanism that helps to maintain the main core deuterium and tritium (DT) density profiles in a tokamak fusion reactor is discussed. In H-mode plasmas dominated by ion- temperature gradient (ITG) driven turbulence, cold DT ions near the edge will naturally pinch radially inward towards the core. This mechanism is due to the quasi-neutral heat flux dominated nature of ITG turbulence and still applies when trapped and passing kinetic electron effects are included. Fueling using shallow pellet injection or supersonic gas jets is augmented by an inward pinch of could DT fuel. The…
Laser blow-off injections of aluminum and tungsten have been performed on the DIII-D tokamak to investigate the variation of impurity transport in a set of dedicated ion and electron heating scans with a fixed value of the external torque. The particle transport is quantified via the Bayesian inference method, which, constrained by a combination of a charge exchange recombination spectroscopy, soft X-ray measurements, and VUV spectroscopy provides a detailed uncertainty quantification of the transport coefficients. Contrasting discharge phases with a dominant electron and ion heating reveal a …

A long-term energy option that is just approaching the horizon after decades of struggle, is fusion. Recent developments allow us to apply techniques from spin physics to advance its viability. The cross section for the primary fusion fuel in a tokamak reactor, D+T=>alpha+n, would be increased by a factor of 1.5 if the fuels were polarized. Simulations predict further non-linear power gains in large-scale machines such as ITER, due to increased alpha heating. These are significant enhancements that could lower the requirements needed to reach ignition and could be used to extend useful reactor…
