We use fluorescent nanospheres as scalar detectors for the electric-field intensity in order to probe the near-field of an optical tip used in aperture-type near-field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM). Surprisingly, the recorded fluorescence images show two intensity lobes if the sphere diameter is smaller that the aperture diameter, as expected only in the case of vector detectors like single molecules. We present a simple but realistic, analytical model for the electric field created by light emitted by a NSOM tip which is quantitative agreement with the experimental data.
This paper reports on the excitation of surface plasmons on gold-coated nanofibre tips by side-illumination with a laser beam and the coupling of the surface plasmons to the optical fiber. The measurements show a strong dependence of the coupling efficiency on the incidence angle with a maximum coupling efficiency on the order of few percent. Moreover, the fibre tip was used as scanning probe device for measuring the beam waist of a focussed laser beam. This work is motivated by the goal to use such plasmonic nanofibre tips in quantum optics experiments with cold atoms.
Light diffraction through a subwavelength aperture located at the apex of a metallic screen with conical geometry is investigated theoretically. A method based on a multipole field expansion is developed to solve Maxwell's equations analytically using boundary conditions adapted both for the conical geometry and for the finite conductivity of a real metal. The topological properties of the diffracted field are discussed in detail and compared to those of the field diffracted through a small aperture in a flat screen, i. e. the Bethe problem. The model is applied to coated, conically tapered op…
We discuss theoretically the concept of spatial resolution in near-field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM) in light of a recent work [Opt. Express 17 (2009) 19969] which reported on the achievement of active tips made of a single ultrasmall fluorescent nanodiamond grafted onto the apex of a substrate tip and on their validation in NSOM imaging. Since fluorescent nanodiamonds tend to decrease steadily in size, we assimilate a nanodiamond-based tip to a point-like single photon source and compare its ultimate resolution with that offered by standard metal-coated aperture NSOM tips. We demonstra…
We demonstrate experimentally and numerically that in fiber tips as they are used in NSOMs azimuthally polarized electrical fields (|E$_{\text{azi}}$|$^2$/|E$_{\text{tot}}$|$^2$ $\approx$ 55% $\pm $ 5% for 1.4μm tip aperture diameter and λ$_0$ = 1550nm), respectively subwavelength confined (FWHM $\approx$ 450nm $\approx$ λ$_0$/3.5) magnetic fields, are generated for a certain tip aperture diameter (d = 1.4μm). We attribute the generation of this field distribution in metal-coated fiber tips to symmetry breaking in the bend and subsequent plasmonic mode filtering in the truncated conical taper.
Plasmonic nano-antennas have proven the outstanding ability of sensing chemical and physical processes down to the nano-meter scale. Sensing is usually achieved within the highly confined optical fields generated resonantly by the nano-antennas, i.e. in contact to the nano-structures. In these paper, We demonstrate the sensing capability of nano-antennas to their larger scale environment, well beyond their plasmonic confinement volume, leading to the concept of 'remote' (non contact) sensing on the nano-meter scale. On the basis of a bowtie-aperture nano-antenna (BNA) integrated at the apex of…
Scanning Near-field Optical Microscopy (SNOM) has been successful in finely tuning the optical properties of photonic crystal (PC) nanocavities. The SNOM nanoprobes proposed so far allowed for either redshifting or blueshifting the resonance peak of the PC structures. In this Letter, we theoretically demonstrate the possibility of redshifting (up to +0.65nm) and blueshifting (up to $-5$~nm) PC cavity resonance with a single SNOM probe. This probe is obtained by opening a bowtie-aperture nano-antenna (BNA) at the apex of a metal-coated tip. This double-way PC tunability is the result of a compe…
The generality of the Bethe's two dipole model for light diffraction through a subwavelength aperture in a conducting plane is studied in the radiation zone for coated conical fiber tips as those used in near field scanning optical microscopy. In order to describe the angular radiated power of the tip theoretically, we present a simple, analytical model for small apertures (radius < 40 nm) based on a multipole expansion. Our model is able to reproduce the available experimental results. It proves relatively insensitive to cone angle and aperture radius and contains, as a first approximation, t…
We review our recent developments of near-field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM) that uses an active tip made of a single fluorescent nanodiamond (ND) grafted onto the apex of a substrate fiber tip. The ND hosting a limited number of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) color centers, such a tip is a scanning quantum source of light. The method for preparing the ND-based tips and their basic properties are summarized. Then we discuss theoretically the concept of spatial resolution that is achievable in this special NSOM configuration and find it to be only limited by the scan height over the imaged system,…
We theoretically and experimentally demonstrate a multifrequency excitation and detection scheme in apertureless near field optical microscopy, that exceeds current state of the art sensitivity and background suppression. By exciting the AFM tip at its two first flexural modes, and demodulating the detected signal at the harmonics of their sum, we extract a near field signal with a twofold improved sensitivity and deep sub-wavelength resolution, reaching $λ/230$. Furthermore, the method offers rich control over experimental degrees of freedom, expanding the parameter space for achieving comple…
We analyse how a probing particle modifies infrared electromagnetic near fields. The particle, assimilated to both electric and magnetic dipoles, represents the tip of an apertureless scanning optical near-field microscope (SNOM). We show that the interaction can be accounted for by ascribing to the particle effective dipole polarizabilities that add the effect of retardation to the one of the image dipole. Apart from these polarizabilities, the SNOM signal expression depends only on the fields without tip perturbation, shown to be closely related to the electromagnetic density of states (EM-L…
We show that the output mode of a single-mode optical fiber can be directly focused to a sub-wavelength waist with a finite working distance by tapering the fiber to a diameter of the order of the wavelength and terminating it with a spherically/hemispherically shaped tip. Numerical simulations show that a beam waist with a width of as small as 0.62λcan be formed. We fabricate micro-lensed fibers and construct a probe-scanning confocal reflection microscope. Measurements on gold nano-particles show a spatial profile with a width of 0.29λfor λ= 850 nm, which is in good agreement with the numeri…
We report near-field scanning optical imaging with an active tip made of a single fluorescent CdSe nanocrystal attached at the apex of an optical tip. Although the images are acquired only partially because of the random blinking of the semiconductor particle, our work validates the use of such tips in ultra-high spatial resolution optical microscopy.
Using a two-dipole model of an optical near-field of Scanning Near-field Optical Microscope tip, i. e. taking into account contributions of magnetic and electric dipoles, we propose and analyze a new type of 3D optical nanotrap found for certain relations between electric and magnetic dipoles. Electric field attains a minimum value in vacuum in the vicinity of the tip and hence such a trap is quite suitable for manipulations with cold atoms.
The optical transmission and reflection in between two metalized optical fiber tips is studied in the optical near-field and far-field domains. Besides aluminum-coated tips for near-field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM), specifically developed gold-coated fiber tips cut by focused ion beam (FIB) are investigated. Transverse transmission maps of sub-wavelength width clearly evidence optical near-field coupling between the tips for short tip distances and becomes essentially Gaussian-shaped for larger distances in the far-field regime. Moreover concentric reflection fringes observed for NSOM-…
The concepts of spoof surface plasmon polaritons and adiabatic field compression are employed to design metallic near-field probes that allow guiding and focusing of mid-infrared wavelength electromagnetic radiation and provides subwavelength field confinements and a lateral optical resolution of about 10 nm.
Using the electrostatic approximation, we analyze electromagnetic fields scattered by sharp conical metal tips, which are illuminated with light polarized along the tip axis. We establish scaling relations for the scattered field amplitude and phase, whose validity is verified with numerical simulations. Analytic expressions for the wavelength, at which the scattered field near the tip changes its direction, and field decay near the tip extremity are obtained, relating these characteristics to the cone angle and metal permittivity. The results obtained have important implications to various ti…
This paper presents the optical design of a multi-spectral piston sensor suitable to co-phasing giant segmented mirrors equipping the Future Extremely Large Telescopes (ELTs). The general theory of the sensor is described in detail and numerical simulations have been carried out, demonstrating that direct piston and tip-tilt measurements are feasible within accuracies respectively close to 20 nm and 10 nano-radians. Those values are compatible with the co-phasing requirements, although the method seems to be perturbed by uncorrected atmospheric seeing
A digital signal acquisition system for an Apertureless SNOM (ASNOM) based on a digital signal processing (DSP) card is presented. An electromagnetic wave scattered by an AFM-like tip is initially detected by an optical homodyning in a Michelson interferometer, with a homodyne phase modulation caused by a periodic travel of the reference arm mirror. Utilizing a non-linear dependency of the tip scattering amplitude on a tip-sample separation distance, the non-fundamental components of a tip oscillation frequency are recovered in optical signal within each tip oscillation period. A detected valu…
Spatial effects of interference and interaction of light modes in the subwavelength part of the near-field optical microscopy probe have been theoretically studied. It was found that the mode interference can lead to higher spatial compression of light (lambda = 500 nm in free space) within the transverse size of 25 nm inside the probe output aperture of 100 nm in diameter. The results principally demonstrate the possibility of increasing spatial resolution of the near-field optical microscopy technique.
One of the long-standing problems in antenna engineering is the realization of highly-directive beams using low-profile devices. In this paper we provide a solution to this problem by means of Huygens' metasurfaces (HMSs), based on the equivalence principle. This principle states that a given excitation can be transformed to a desirable aperture field by inducing suitable electric and magnetic surface currents. Building on this concept, we propose and demonstrate cavity-excited HMS antennas, where the single-source cavity excitation is designed to optimize aperture illumination, while the HMS …
We developed THz-resonant scanning probe tips, yielding strongly enhanced and nanoscale confined THz near fields at their tip apex. The tips with length in the order of the THz wavelength (λ = 96.5 μm) were fabricated by focused ion beam (FIB) machining and attached to standard atomic force microscopy (AFM) cantilevers. Measurements of the near-field intensity at the very tip apex (25 nm radius) as a function of tip length, via graphene-based (thermoelectric) near-field detection, indicate their first and second order geometrical antenna resonances for tip length of 33 and 78 μm, respectively.…
We demonstrate a high-performance apertureless near-field probe made of a tapered metal tip with a set of periodic shallow grooves near the apex. The spontaneous emission from a single emitter near the tip is investigated systematically for the side-illumination tip enhanced spectroscopy (TES). In contrast with the bare tapered metal tip in conventional side-illumination TES, the corrugated probe not only enhances strongly local excitation field but also concentrates the emission directivity, which leads to high collection efficiency and signal-to-noise ratio. In particular, we propose an asym…
Using exact three-dimensional vectorial simulations of radiation coupling into uncoated dielectric fiber probes, we calculate amplitude transfer functions for conical single-mode fiber tips at the light wavelength of 633 nm. The coupling efficiency of glass fiber tips is determined in a wide range of spatial frequencies of the incident radiation for opening angles varying from 30 to 120 degrees. The resolution in near-field imaging with these tips is considered for field distributions limited in both direct and spatial-frequency space. The characteristics of the transfer functions describing t…
We introduce a point-like scanning single-photon source that operates at room temperature and offers an exceptional photostability (no blinking, no bleaching). This is obtained by grafting in a controlled way a diamond nanocrystal (size around 20 nm) with single nitrogen-vacancy color-center occupancy at the apex of an optical probe. As an application, we image metallic nanostructures in the near-field, thereby achieving a near-field scanning single-photon microscopy working at room temperature on the long term. Our work may be of importance to various emerging fields of nanoscience where an a…
Wireless power transfer (WPT) has been an active topic of research, with a number of WPT schemes implemented in the near-field (coupling) and far-field (radiation) regimes. Here, we consider a beamed WPT scheme based on a dynamically reconfigurable source aperture transferring power to receiving devices within the Fresnel (near-zone) region. In this context, the dynamic aperture resembles a reconfigurable lens capable of focusing power to a well-defined spot, whose dimension can be related to a point spread function (PSF). Near-zone focusing can be achieved by generating different amplitude or…
We have investigated the spontaneous decay rate of an excited molecule placed near a circular aperture in a metal film of finite thickness and finite conductivity. We have considered the metal film both suspended freely in vacuum and lying on a substrate. A significant effect of molecule the position and the presence of the substrate on the rate of spontaneous emission of the molecule is shown. The asymptotes which can be used to describe this process are found. Total, radiative, and non-radiative spontaneous decay rates of the excited molecule are extracted and compared. The results may be us…
Aperture based scanning near field optical microscopes are important instruments to study light at the nanoscale and to understand the optical functionality of photonic nanostructures. In general, a detected image is affected by both, the transverse electric and magnetic field components of light. The discrimination of the individual field components is challenging, as these four field components are contained within two signals in the case of a polarization-resolved measurement. Here, we develop a methodology to solve the inverse imaging problem and to retrieve the vectorial field components …
Near-field optical microscopes with two independent tips for simultaneous excitation and detection can be essential tools for studying localized optical phenomena on the subwavelength scale. Here, we report on the implementation of a fully automated and robust dual-tip scanning near-field optical microscope (SNOM), in which the excitation tip is stationary, while the detection tip automatically scans the surrounding area. To monitor and control the distance between the two probes, mechanical interactions due to shear forces are used. We experimentally investigate suitable scan parameters and f…

The numerical aperture (NA) of a lens determines its ability to focus light and its resolving capability. Having a large NA is a very desirable quality for applications requiring small light-matter interaction volumes or large angular collections. Traditionally, a large NA lens based on light refraction requires precision bulk optics that ends up being expensive and is thus also a specialty item. In contrast, metasurfaces allow the lens designer to circumvent those issues producing high NA lenses in an ultra-flat fashion. However, so far, these have been limited to numerical apertures on the s…
We present a method to realize active optical tips for use in near-field optics that can operate at room temperature. A metal-coated optical tip is covered with a thin polymer layer stained with CdSe nanocrystals or nanorods at low density. The time analysis of the emission rate and emission spectra of the active tips reveal that a very small number of particles - possibly down to only one - can be made active at the tip apex. This opens the way to near-field optics with a single inorganic nanoparticle as a light source.
Scanning near-field field optical microscopy (SNOM) is a technique, which allows sub-wavelength optical imaging of photonic structures. While the electric field components of light can be routinely obtained, imaging of the magnetic components has only recently become of interest. This is so due to the development of artificial materials, which enhance and exploit the typically weak magnetic light-matter interactions to offer extraordinary optical properties. Consequently, both sources and detectors of the magnetic field of light are now required. In this paper, assisted by finite-difference ti…
Near-field scanning optical microscopy has been an indispensable tool for designing, characterizing and understanding the functionalities of diverse nanoscale photonic devices. As the advances in fabrication technology have driven the devices smaller and smaller, the demand has grown steadily for improving its resolving power, which is determined mainly by the size of the probe attached to the scanner. The use of a smaller probe has been a straightforward approach to increase the resolving power, but it cannot be made arbitrarily small in practice due to the steep reduction of the collection e…
Structured metallic tips are increasingly important for optical spectroscopies such as tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS), with plasmonic resonances frequently cited as a mechanism for electric field enhancement. We probe the local optical response of sharp and spherical-tipped atomic force microscopy (AFM) tips using a scanning hyperspectral imaging technique to identify plasmonic behaviour. Localised surface plasmon resonances which radiatively couple with far-field light are found only for spherical AFM tips, with little response for sharp AFM tips, in agreement with numerical simulatio…
A recent study shows that: when a long lifetime particle is positioned near a plasmonic metal nanoparticle, lifetime of plasmon oscillations extends, but, "only" near that long-life particle [PRB 101, 035416 (2020)]. Here, we show that this phenomenon can be utilized for ultrahigh (single-molecule) resolution ultrafast apertureless (scattering) SNOM applications. We use the exact solutions of 3D Maxwell equations. We illuminate a metal-coated silicon tip, a quantum emitter (QE) placed on the tip apex, with a femtosecond laser. The induced near-field in the apex decays rapidly except in the vic…
Light-matter interactions are often considered governed by the electric optical field only, leaving aside the magnetic component of light. However, the magnetic part plays a determining role in many optical processes from light and chiral-matter interactions, photon-avalanching to forbidden photochemistry, making the manipulation of magnetic processes extremely relevant. Here, by creating a standing wave using a plasmonic nanomirror we manipulate the spatial distributions of the electric and magnetic fields and their associated local density of states, allowing the selective control of the exc…
We theoretically study resonance responses of flat surfaces and sharp edges of the nanostructures that support excitations of phonon-polaritons in mid-infrared range. We focus on two materials: silicon carbide that has a nearly isotropic permittivity and hexagonal boron nitride that has a strong anisotropy and spectral band with hyperbolic dispersion. We aim to predict scattering-type near-field optical microscope (s-SNOM) response and develop a modeling approach that adequately describes the resonant behavior of the nanostructure with phonon-polaritons. The previously employed technique assum…
The finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is employed to solve the three dimensional Maxwell equation for the situation of near-field microscopy using a sub-wavelength aperture. Experimental result on unexpected high spatial resolution is reproduced by our computer simulation.
We analyze how a probing particle modifies the infrared electromagnetic near field of a sample. The particle, described by electric and magnetic polarizabilities, represents the tip of an apertureless scanning optical near-field microscope (SNOM). We show that the interaction with the sample can be accounted for by ascribing to the particle dressed polarizabilities that combine the effects of image dipoles with retardation. When calculated from these polarizabilities, the SNOM signal depends only on the fields without the perturbing tip. If the studied surface is not illuminated by an external…
In "Modeling and observation of mid-infrared nonlocality in effective epsilon-near-zero ultranarrow coaxial apertures" the authors perform infrared transmission measurements on coaxial aperture arrays in metal films. They claim that the blue-shift of the resonances is the result of nonlocality. They claim that roughness will not produce a shift. This is contrary to past results in plasmonics, to our simulations and to past published claims from some of the same authors. Furthermore, the effect of planarization that occurs for atomic layer deposition, as has been reported elsewhere, will produc…
We describe a method to map the standing-wave pattern inside a Fabry-Perot optical cavity with sub-wavelength resolution by perturbing it with a commercially available scanning near-field optical microscope (SNOM) tip. The method is applied to a fiber Fabry-Perot microcavity. We demonstrate its use to determine the relative position of the antinodes at two different wavelengths. In addition, we use the SNOM tip as a point-like source allowing precise positioning of a microscope objective with respect to the cavity mode.
We have designed, built, and characterized a high-resolution objective lens that is compatible with an ultra-high vacuum environment. The lens system exploits the principle of the Weierstrass-sphere solid immersion lens to reach a numerical aperture (NA) of 0.92. Tailored to the requirements of optical lattice experiments, the objective lens features a relatively long working distance of 150 micrometers. Our two-lens design is remarkably insensitive to mechanical tolerances in spite of the large NA. Additionally, we demonstrate the application of a tapered optical fiber tip, as used in scannin…
Leakage-radiation microscopy of a thin gold film demonstrates the ability of an ensemble of fluorescent diamond nanoparticles attached onto the apex of an optical tip to serve as an efficient near-field surface-plasmon polariton launcher. The implementation of the nanodiamond-based tip in a near-field scanning optical microscope will allow for an accurate control on the launching position, thereby opening the way to scanning plasmonics.
A theory is presented to describe the heat-flux radiated in near-field regime by a set of interacting nanoemitters held at different temperatures in vacuum or above a solid surface. We show that this thermal energy can be focused and even amplified in spots that are much smaller than those obtained with a single thermal source. We also demonstrate the possibility to locally pump heat using specific geometrical configurations. These many body effects pave the way to a multi-tip near-field scanning thermal microscopy which could find broad applications in the fields of nanoscale thermal manageme…
Near-field infrared spectroscopy by elastic scattering of light from a probe tip resolves optical contrasts in materials at dramatically sub-wavelength scales across a broad energy range, with the demonstrated capacity for chemical identification at the nanoscale. However, current models of probe-sample near-field interactions still cannot provide a sufficiently quantitatively interpretation of measured near-field contrasts, especially in the case of materials supporting strong surface phonons. We present a model of near-field spectroscopy derived from basic principles and verified by finite-e…
Using nanometer spatial resolution electron-energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and cathodoluminescence (CL) mapping, we demonstrate that Au alloys containing a poor plasmonic metal (Pd) can nevertheless sustain multiple size-dependent localized surface plasmon resonances and observe strong field enhancement at Pd-rich tips, where the composition is in fact least favorable for plasmons. These Au/Pd stellated nanocrystals are also involved in substrate and interparticle coupling, as unraveled by EELS tilt series.
Our ability to optically interrogate nanoscopic objects is controlled by the difference between their extinction cross sections and the diffraction limited area to which light can be confined in the far field. We show that a partially transmissive spatial mask placed near the back focal plane of a high numerical aperture microscope objective enhances the extinction contrast of a scatterer near an interface by approximately $T^{-1/2}$, where T is the transmissivity of the mask. Numerical aperture based differentiation of background from scattered light represents a general approach to increasin…
This paper addresses recent experimental findings about luminescence of a gold tip in near-field interaction with a gold surface. Our electrochemically etched gold tips show a typical, intrinsic luminescence that we exploit to track the plasmon resonance modeled by a Lorentzian oscillator. Our experimental device is based on a spectrometer optically coupled to an atomic force microscope used in tuning fork mode. Our measurements provide evidence of a strong optical coupling between the tip and the surface. We demonstrate that this coupling strongly affects the luminescence (Intensity, waveleng…
We investigate - both experimentally and theoretically - the inelastic interaction between fast electrons and the electromagnetic field scattered by metallic apertures and nanostructures on dielectric membranes using photon induced near-field electron microscopy. The experiments - performed in a high brightness ultrafast transmission electron microscope - on gold apertures on silicon nitride membranes reveal strong modulations of the electron-light coupling strength. We demonstrates that this effect results from the combined action of the electric field scattered by the aperture edges and the …
Near-field imaging with terahertz (THz) waves is emerging as a powerful technique for fundamental research in photonics and across physical and life sciences. Spatial resolution beyond the diffraction limit can be achieved by collecting THz waves from an object through a small aperture placed in the near-field. However, light transmission through a sub-wavelength size aperture is fundamentally limited by the wave nature of light. Here, we conceive a novel architecture that exploits inherently strong evanescent THz field arising within the aperture to mitigate the problem of vanishing transmiss…
We investigate the modification of photoluminescence (PL) from single semiconductor nanocrystal quantum dots (NCs) in proximity of metal and semiconducting Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) tips. The presence of the tip alters the radiative decay rate of an emitter via interference and opens efficient non radiative decay channels via energy transfer to the tip material. These effects cause quenching (or enhancement) of the emitter's PL intensity, as a function of its distance from the interacting tip. We take advantage of this highly distance dependent effect to realize a contrast mechanism for hi…
