Previously unobserved nitrous oxide transitions around 2.5 $μ$m are measured by intracavity laser absorption spectroscopy (ICLAS) analyzed by time-resolved Fourier transform (TRFT) spectrometer. With an accuracy of the order of 10^-3 cm^-1, measured positions of 1637 assigned weak transitions are provided. They belong to 42 vibrational transitions, among which 33 are observed for the first time. These data are believed to be useful in particular to monitoring atmosphere purposes.
We investigate the effect of exciton coupling on the optical absorption spectrum of polymer molecules under conditions of strong inhomogeneous broadening. We demonstrate that the dependence of the maximum in the rescaled absorption spectrum on the number of monomers is determined by the average monomer excitation energies and their resonant coupling and insensitive to the inhomogeneous broadening. Thus the absorption spectrum can be used to determine optical interactions between monomers. The results are applied to the absorption spectra of poly-A poly-T DNA hairpins and used to interpret the …
The paper presents main aspects of the Dipole-Quadrupole theory of Surface Enhanced Infrared Absorption (SEIRA). It is pointed out the possibility of appearance of the lines, caused by totally symmetric vibrations transforming after the unit irreducible representation, which are forbidden in usual infrared absorption spectra in molecules with sufficiently high symmetry. Observation of such lines in the SEIRA spectra of diprotonated and ethylene, adsorbed on and on mordenites is pointed out. The results well agree with our ideas about surface enhanced optical processes, based on the conception …
We propose an approach to sensitively probe the chirality of molecules by measuring their coherent optical absorption spectra. It is shown that quantum dynamics of the cyclic three-level chiral molecules driven by appropriately-designed external fields is total-phase dependent. This will result in chirality-dependent absorption spectra for the probe field. As a consequence, these absorption spectra can be utilized to identify molecular chirality and determinate enantiomer excess. The feasibility of the proposal with chiral molecules confined in hollow-core photonic crystal fiber (HC-PCF) is al…
Time-resolved X-ray absorption spectroscopy is emerging as a uniquely powerful tool to probe coupled electronic-nuclear dynamics in photo-excited molecules. Theoretical studies to date have established that time-resolved X-ray absorption spectroscopy is an atom-specific probe of excited-state wave packet passage through a seam of conical intersections (CIs). However, in many molecular systems, there are competing dynamical pathways involving CIs of different electronic and nuclear character. Discerning these pathways remains an important challenge. Here, we demonstrate that time-resolved X-ray…
Carotenoids in hydrated polar solvents form aggregates characterized by dramatic changes in their absorption spectra with respect to monomers. Here we analyze absorption spectra of aggregates of the carotenoid astaxanthin in hydrated dimethylsulfoxide. Depending on water content, two types of aggregates were produced: H-aggregates with absorption maximum around 390 nm, and J-aggregates with red-shifted absorption band peaking at wavelengths >550 nm. The large shifts with respect to absorption maximum of monomeric astaxanthin (470-495 nm depending on solvent) are caused by excitonic interaction…
A numerically exact path integral treatment of the absorption and emission spectra of open quantum systems is presented that requires only the straightforward solution of a stochastic differential equation. The approach converges rapidly enabling the calculation of spectra of large excitonic systems across the complete range of system parameters and for arbitrary bath spectral densities. With the numerically exact absorption and emission operators one can also immediately compute energy transfer rates using the multi-chromophoric Forster resonant energy transfer formalism. Benchmark calculatio…
Helicenes, a class of organic molecules consisting of ortho-fused benzene rings in a spring-like configuration have found several interesting applications in nonlinear optical materials and opto-electronic devices. Under the action of strain, i.e., via mechanical stretching or compression, the optical absorption spectra of helicenes change which can be employed for strain sensing. The present study presents a detailed investigation of the optical absorption spectra of helicenes using density functional theory along with calculations of the changes in the spectra during mechanical axial stretch…
Near- and mid-IR absorption spectra of endohedral H2@C60+ have been measured using He-tagging. The samples have been prepared using a 'molecular surgery' synthetic approach and were ionized and spectroscopically characterized in the gas phase. In contrast to neutral C60 and H2@C60, the corresponding He-tagged cationic species show distinct spectral differences. Shifts and line splittings in the near- and mid-IR regions indicate the influence of the caged hydrogen molecule on both the electronic ground and excited states. Possible relevance to astronomy is discussed.
Vibrationally resolved near-edge x-ray absorption spectra at the K-edge for a number of small molecules have been computed from anharmonic vibrational configuration interaction calculations of the Franck-Condon factors. The potential energy surfaces for ground and core-excited states were obtained at the core-valence separated CC2, CCSD, CCSDR(3), and CC3 levels of theory, employing the Adaptive Density-Guided Approach (ADGA) scheme to select the single points at which to perform the energy calculations. We put forward an initial attempt to include pair-mode coupling terms to describe the pote…
A survey is presented of the work done so far to check earlier claims that a fine structure may be observed to occur under certain circumstances in the impurity spectral range of the optical absorption spectra of silver halides following photostimulation in the intrinsic range. This structure, associated with the photochemical formation of silver specks, has been questioned over the years. We now weigh carefully the experimental evidence on the silver halides against a background of similar data on the alkali halides, where competing processes run slower. We come to the conclusion that present…
Predicting UV-visible absorption spectra is essential to understanding photochemical processes and designing energy materials. Quantum chemical methods can deliver accurate calculations of UV-visible absorption spectra, but they are computationally expensive, especially for large systems or when one computes line shapes from thermal averages. Here, we present an approach to predicting UV-visible absorption spectra of solvated aromatic molecules by quantum chemistry (QC) and machine learning (ML). We show that a ML model, trained on the high-level QC calculation of the excitation energy of a se…
We calculate the x-ray absorption spectra of liquid water at ambient conditions and of hexagonal ice close to melting, using a static GW approach that includes approximately local field effects. Quantum dynamics of the nuclei is taken into account by averaging the absorption cross section over molecular configurations generated by path integral simulations. We find that inclusion of quantum disorder is essential to bring the calculated spectra in close agreement with experiment. In particular, the intensity of the pre-edge feature, a spectral signature of broken and distorted hydrogen bonds, i…
We present ab initio absorption spectra of six three-dimensional semiconductors and insulators calculated using Gaussian-based periodic equation-of-motion coupled-cluster theory with single and double excitations (EOM-CCSD). The spectra are calculated efficiently by solving a system of linear equations at each frequency, giving access to an energy range of tens of eV without explicit enumeration of excited states. We assess the impact of Brillouin zone sampling, for which it is hard to achieve convergence due to the cost of EOM-CCSD. Although our most converged spectra exhibit lineshapes that …
We have performed first principles electron-correlated calculations employing large basis sets to optimize the geometries, and to compute linear optical absorption spectra of various low-lying conformers of silicon hydrides: Si$_{2}$H$_{2n}$, $n=1,2,3$. The geometry optimization for various isomers was carried out at the coupled-cluster singles-doubles-perturbative-triples {[}CCSD(T){]} level of theory, while their excited states and absorption spectra were computed using a large-scale multi-reference singles-doubles configuration-interaction (MRSDCI) approach, which includes electron-correlat…
The Use of Wigner Expansion and Path Integral Method for Quantum Correction of the Low-Order Spectral Moments and Collision-Induced Absorption Profiles
A method for study of charge-transfer interactions between solute molecules and solvent based on the comparison of the ratios of spectral shifts of different electronic transitions in solute molecules in chemically inert solvent is proposed. The method is applicable to molecules that do not change their dipole moment on excitation. As an example, a presence of charge transfer interactions in higher electronic states of aromatic hydrocarbons (benzene, phenanthrene, and naphthalene) dissolved in water and alcohols was demonstrated.
Fast and inexpensive characterization of materials properties is a key element to discover novel functional materials. In this work, we suggest an approach employing three classes of Bayesian machine learning (ML) models to correlate electronic absorption spectra of nanoaggregates with the strength of intermolecular electronic couplings in organic conducting and semiconducting materials. As a specific model system, we consider PEDOT:PSS, a cornerstone material for organic electronic applications, and so analyze the couplings between charged dimers of closely packed PEDOT oligomers that are at …
We present a method for computing optical absorption spectra by means of a Bethe-Salpeter equation approach, which is based on a conserving linear response calculation for electron-hole coherences in the presence of an external electromagnetic field. This procedure allows, in principle, for the determination of the electron-hole correlation function self-consistently with the corresponding single-particle Green function. We analyze the general approach for a "one-shot" calculation of the photoabsorption cross section of finite systems, and discuss the importance of scattering and dephasing con…
We study the Förster resonant energy transfer (FRET) rate in multichromophoric systems. The multichromophoric FRET rate is determined by the overlap integral of the donor's emission and acceptor's absorption spectra, which are obtained via 2nd-order cumulant expansion techniques developed in this work. We calculate the spectra and multichromophoric FRET rate for both localized and delocalized systems. (i) The role of the initial entanglement between the donor and its bath is found to be crucial in both the emission spectrum and the multichromophoric FRET rate. (ii) The absorption spectra obtai…
Electron-hole excitation theory is used to unveil the role of nuclear quantum effects on the X-ray absorption spectral signatures of water, whose structure is computed via path-integral molecular dynamics with the MB-pol intermolecular potential model. Compared to spectra generated from the classically modeled water, quantum nuclei introduce important effects on the spectra in terms of both the energies and line shapes. Fluctuations due to delocalized protons influence the short-range ordering of the hydrogen bond network via changes in the intramolecular covalence, which broaden the pre-edge …
In many molecular systems one encounters the situation where electronic excitations couple to a quasi-continuum of phonon modes. That continuum may be highly structured e.g. due to some weakly damped high frequency modes. To handle such a situation, an approach combining the non-Markovian quantum state diffusion (NMQSD) description of open quantum systems with an efficient but abstract approximation was recently applied to calculate energy transfer and absorption spectra of molecular aggregates [Roden, Eisfeld, Wolff, Strunz, PRL 103 (2009) 058301]. To explore the validity of the used approxim…
We investigate the excitonic energy transfer (EET) in the Fenna-Matthews-Olsen complex and obtain the linear absorption spectrum (at 300 K) by a phenomenological time-convolutionless (TCL) master equation which is validated by utilizing Path Integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) simulations. By applying Marcus' theory for choosing the proper Lindblad operators for the long-time incoherent hopping process and using local non-Markovian dephasing rates, our model shows very good agreement with the PIMC results for EET. It also correctly reproduces the linear absorption spectrum that is found in experiment,…
