We studied the microscopic polymer conformations in the droplet detachment process of an elastic semi-dilute polyelectrolytic Xanthan solution by measuring the instantaneous birefringence. As in earlier studies, we observe the suppression of the finite time singularity of the pinch-off process and the occurrence of an elastic filament. Our microscopic measurements reveal that the relatively stiff Xanthan molecules are already significantly pre-stretched to about 90 % of their final extension at the moment the filament appears. At later stages of the detachment process, we find evidence of a concentration enhancement due to the elongational flow.
We study numerically localised short circuits in Li||Bi liquid metal batteries. In the prototype of a classical, three liquid-layer system, we assume a perceptible local deformation of the Li-salt interface. We find that there always exists a critical current at which a Li-droplet is cut off from this hump, and transferred to the Bi-phase. In a second case, we assume that the molten Li is contained in a metal foam, and that a small Li-droplet emerges below this foam due to insufficient wetting. This droplet is deformed by Lorentz forces, until eventually being pinched off. Here, the critical c…
Drop impact onto a thin liquid film of another liquid is observed and characterized using a high-speed video system. A new mode of splash - a complete, simultaneous corona detachment - has been observed, which is the result of the lamella breakup near the wall film. The abrupt outward and upward displacement of the lamella leads to an extreme stretching of the corona wall, resulting in rapid thinning and a rupture of the corona wall. This rupture triggers propagating Taylor-Culick rims, which rapidly spread, meet and thus undercut simultaneously the entire corona, resulting in its detachment. …
When a droplet is generated, the ligament connecting the drop to the nozzle thins down and eventually pinches off. Adding solid particles to the liquid phase leads to a more complex dynamic, notably by increasing the shear viscosity. Moreover, it introduces an additional length scale to the system, the diameter of the particles, which eventually becomes comparable to the diameter of the ligament. In this paper, we experimentally investigate the thinning and pinch-off of drops of suspensions with two different sizes of particles. We characterize the thinning for different particle size ratios a…
It is generally accepted that the Worthington jet occurs when a droplet impacts onto a liquid pool. However, in this experimental study of the impact of viscous droplets onto a less-viscous liquid pool, we identify another jet besides the Worthington jet, forming a two-jet phenomenon. The two jets, a surface-climbing jet and the Worthington jet, may appear successively during one impact event. By carefully tuning the impact condition, we find that the two-jet phenomenon is jointly controlled by the droplet-pool viscosity ratio, the droplet Weber number, and the droplet-pool miscibility. The me…
A spontaneous breakup of a liquid jet results in the formation of a chain of droplets, which is a daily observed phenomenon, such as in the raining process and under an open water-faucet. We here report inkjet printing experiments for the formation of droplets which are inconsistent with existing theories and thereafter propose a novel concept of surface area minimization to address the droplet-formation condition. The novel concept is also capable of predicting the formation of satellite and subsatellite droplets, which cannot be comprehended by the classic Rayleigh theory for the formation o…
The impact of a heavier droplet into a deep pool of lighter liquid is investigated using three-dimensional numerical simulations. Unprecedented to any numerical simulations, we demonstrate that the heavier droplets can hang from the surface of a lighter liquid using surface tension. The impact phenomenon and the evolution of the heavier droplet as a function of its size and release height are explored. A theoretical model is also formulated to understand the role of different forms of energies associated with the hanging droplet. We further solve the force balance equations for the hanging dro…
Heat and mass transfers of the evaporation of rotating hydrocarbons liquid droplet of ternary components, in forced convection are studied numerically. Comparison between our numerical results and those obtained in the literature shows qualitative and quantitative satisfactory agreements, in rotatory forced convection. Optimal values of the wind and rotational velocities of the liquid droplet have been determined. New correlations expressing the evaporation rate in terms of Dgheim & Reynolds numbers are proposed. Other new correlations expressing the evaporation rate in terms of Dgheim, Reynol…
This study developed a simple method to measure liquid surface tension based on curve fitting technique. In this study, the explicit lying droplet profile function in terms of surface tension was derived by solving 2-D Young-Laplace equation exactly, and the derived profile function was superior to the existing approximate profile functions. By fitting the derived profile function with the detected droplet profile image data, the liquid surface tension was then obtained. The proposed method does not rely on any new instrument, it is quite different in principle and simpler than the traditional…
This letter presents a scaling theory of the coalescence of two viscous spherical droplets. An initial value problem was formulated and analytically solved for the evolution of the radius of a liquid neck formed upon droplet coalescence. Two asymptotic solutions of the initial value problem reproduce the well-known scaling relations in the viscous and inertial regimes. The viscous-to-inertial crossover experimentally observed by Paulsen et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 114501 (2011)] manifests in the theory, and their fitting relation, which shows collapse of data of different viscosities onto a …
Liquid atomization processes generating sprays and aerosols of droplets are used in many delivery and coating systems involving pure solvents, solutions, and suspensions. In our recent experimental work, we introduced a novel liquid atomization process generating micro-sprays and aerosols of submicron-diameter droplets for pure solvents, solutions, and suspensions: gas jets disintegrate thin liquid films that are formed as bubbles approach a liquid surface. Here we develop a theoretical description of droplet sizes and flow rates, using the first principles of conservation of mass and energy, …
Spray detonation in n-heptane two-phase mixtures is simulated using Eulerian Lagrangian method. Two-dimensional configuration is considered, and the effects of droplet diameter and liquid equivalence ratio on detonation propagation, structure, and dynamics are investigated. The results show that the average detonation propagation speed first increases and then decreases as liquid equivalence ratio changes, and the speed peaks at higher liquid equivalence ratio for larger droplets. The triple points and transverse detonations vaporize or aerodynamically expel the droplets from their trajectorie…
In this work simulations are presented of low viscosity ethanol and high viscosity silicone oil droplets impacting on a dry solid surface at atmospheric and reduced ambient pressure. The simulations are able to capture both the effect of the ambient gas pressure and liquid viscosity on droplet impact and breakup. The results suggests that the early time droplet impact and gas film behavior for both low and high viscosity liquids share the same physics. However, for later time liquid sheet formation and breakup high and low viscosity liquids behave differently. These results explain why for bot…
This letter presents a theory on the coalescence of two spherical liquid droplets that are initially stationary. The evolution of the radius of a liquid neck formed upon coalescence was formulated as an initial value problem and then solved to yield an exact solution without free parameters, with its two asymptotic approximations reproducing the well-known scaling relations in the viscous and inertial regimes. The viscous-to-inertial crossover observed by Paulsen et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 114501 (2011)] is also recovered by the theory, rendering the collapse of data of different viscositie…
When a liquid droplet impacts a vibrated micro-structured surface with asymmetric topology, the liquids perform a horizontal motion during its bouncing. The moving effect is observed when the liquid is in contact with a low surface energy surface (e.g. hydrophobic) and over a wide amplitude and frequency range. We propose that the motion direction of liquid droplets is driven by a force exerted by the unbalanced vapor flow between the contact of solid and the liquid due to the asymmetric geometry. We observe the levitation and movement dynamics of the droplet impacting on a vibrated micro-stru…
The COVID-19 pandemic has inspired several studies on the fluid dynamics of respiratory events. Here, we propose a computational approach in which respiratory droplets are coarse-grained into an Eulerian liquid field advected by the fluid streamlines. A direct numerical simulation is carried out for a moist cough using a closure model for space-time dependence of the evaporation time scale. Estimates of the Stokes number are provided, for the initial droplet size of $10 μ$m, which are found to be <<1 thereby justifying the neglect of droplet inertia. Several of the important features of the mo…
The impact of droplets on a liquid pool is ubiquitous in nature and important in many industrial applications. A droplet impacting on a liquid pool can result in the pinch-off of a regular bubble or entrap a large bubble under certain impact conditions. In this study, the cavity deformation and the bubble entrapment during the impact of droplets on a liquid pool are studied by combined experimental measurements and numerical simulations. The time evolution of the free surface profile obtained in the numerical simulation is in good agreement with the experimental results. The cavity created by …

Experimental and modelling study is presented for the effect of a wide range of liquid viscosities on the droplet impact on a smooth solid surface at atmospheric pressure. A non-monotonic variation of threshold between droplet deposition and splash was observed experimentally. Specifically, the critical Weber number separating deposition from splashing decreases and then increases with increasing the Ohnesorge number. The observations of splash in low viscosity region and receding breakup in high viscosity region were analyzed qualitatively from the perspectives of Kelvin-Helmholtz instability…
When a stationary bubble and a stationary droplet immersed in a liquid pool are brought in contact with each other, they form a bubble-droplet aggregate. Its equilibrium morphology and stability largely depend on the combination of different components' surface tensions, known as spreading factor. In this study, we look at the interaction between a rising bubble and a stationary droplet to better understand the dynamics of coalescence and rising as well as morphological changes for the bubble-droplet aggregate. A systematic study is conducted on the interaction processes with various bubble si…
The oblique impact of a liquid droplet onto a deep liquid pool is studied numerically with the adaptive volume-of-fluid solver Basilisk. The splashing threshold, cavity formation, cavity evolution and the maximum cavity dimensions are quantified as a function of the Weber number and the impact angle. We compare the numerical results with recent experimental work by Gielen et al. [Phys. Rev. Fluids 2, 083602 (2017)]. Similarly to the experimental results, three different impact regimes are observed: deposition of the droplet onto the pool, single-sided splashing in the direction of the impact a…
When a water droplet is deposited within a sparsely miscible liquid medium such as certain oils, the droplet surprisingly vanishes, even in a confined geometry. Such a phenomenon has crucial consequences for multiphase flows in which confined nano- and/or picoliter droplets are considered. We report here experiments of microdroplet dissolution in microchannels that reveal an enhancement of the shrinkage of confined water microdroplets in oil due to the permeability of the walls - made of polydimethilsiloxane (PDMS) - and a delay when collective effects are present. The system is first modelled…
This paper represents a theoretical and an experimental study of the spreading dynamics of a liquid droplet, generated by a needle free deposition system called the liquid needle droplet deposition technique. This technique utilizes a continuous liquid jet generated from a pressurized dosing system which generates a liquid drop on a substrate to be characterized by optical contact angle measurements. Although many studies have explored the theoretical modelling of the droplet spreading scenario, a theoretical model representing the spreading dynamics of a droplet, generated by the jet impact a…
The impact of droplets on liquid pools is ubiquitous in nature and many industrial applications. Most previous studies of droplet impact focus on Newtonian fluids, while less attention has been paid to the impact dynamics of non-Newtonian droplets, even though non-Newtonian fluids are widely used in many applications. In this study, the splashing dynamics of shear-thinning droplets with yield stress are studied by combined experiments and simulations. The formation and the propagation of the ejecta sheet produced during the splashing process are considered, and the velocity, the radius, and th…

We have detected unique hydrodynamic topology in thin air film surrounding the central air dimple formed during drop impact on an immiscible liquid pool. The pattern resembles spinodal and finger-like structures typically found in various thin condensed matter systems. However, similar structures in thin entrapped gas films during drop impacts on solids or liquids have not been reported to date. The thickness profile and the associated dewetting dynamics in the entrapped air layer are investigated experimentally and theoretically using high-speed reflection interferometric imaging and linear s…
In the present paper, experimental and numerical studies of interaction between different liquid droplets with different hot metal surfaces had been carried out and the obtained results were interpreted using graphs and pictures. Droplet impact, spreading, break-up, and leidenfrost phenomenon were observed with the help of video camera at 100 fps. The interaction studies were done at different surface temperatures and different droplet impinging velocities. Three metals and three liquids were selected for the present study. Copper, Aluminium and Steel were selected as metals with different rou…
In the present study, we have studied the electro-hydrodynamic of a physical system where a Newtonian dielectric liquid column or droplet suspended in another Newtonian dielectric liquid medium in presence of a simple shear flow. Taking both the phases as leaky dielectric and perfect dielectric in to consideration, we have performed 2D numerical solution for capturing the essential features of droplet deformation in between the parallel plate configuration. For a perfect dielectric system, this study shows that the deformation characteristic follows a monotonic as well as non-monotonic variati…
A \textit{walker} is a droplet of liquid that self-propels on the free surface of an oscillating bath of the same liquid through feedback between the droplet and its wave field. We have studied walking droplets in the presence of two driving frequencies and have observed a new class of walking droplets, which we coin \textit{superwalkers}. Superwalkers may be more than double the size of the largest walkers, may travel at more than triple the speed of the fastest ones, and enable a plethora of novel multi-droplet behaviors.
