We investigated the influence of the photonic mode density (PMD) on the triplet dynamics of individual chromophores on a dielectric interface by comparing their response in the presence and absence of a nearby gold film. Lifetimes of the excited singlet state were evaluated in ordet to measure directly the PMD at the molecules position. Triplet state lifetimes were simultaneously determined by statistical analysis of the detection time of the fluorescence photons. The observed singlet decay rates are in agreement with the predicted PMD for molecules with different orientations. The triplet decay rate is modified in a fashion correlated to the singlet decay rate. These results show that PMD engineering can lead to an important suppression of the fluorescence, introducing a novel aspect of the physical mechanism to enhance fluorescence intensity in PMD-enhancing systems such as plasmonic devices.
Photoluminescence (PL) intermittency is a ubiquitous phenomenon detrimentally reducing the temporal emission intensity stability of single colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) and the emission quantum yield of their ensembles. Despite efforts for blinking reduction via chemical engineering of the QD architecture and its environment, blinking still poses barriers to the application of QDs, particularly in single-particle tracking in biology or in single-photon sources. Here, we demonstrate the first deterministic all-optical suppression of quantum dot blinking using a compound technique of visible and…
Near transform-limited single photon sources are required for perfect photon indistinguishability in quantum networks. Having such sources in nanodiamonds is particularly important since it can enable engineering hybrid quantum photonic systems. In this letter, we report the generation of optically stable, nearly transform-limited single silicon vacancy emitters in nanodiamonds. Lines as narrow as 325 MHz are reported, which is comparable to the lifetime limited linewidth. Moreover, the emitters exhibit minimal spectrum diffusion and absolute photostability, even if pumped well above saturatio…
Blinking of the photoluminescence (PL) emitted from individual conjugated polymer chains is one of the central observations made by single-molecule spectroscopy (SMS). Important information, e.g., regarding excitation energy transfer, can be extracted by evaluating dynamic quenching. However, the nature of trap states, which are responsible for PL quenching, often remains obscured. We present a detailed investigation of the photon statistics of single poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) chains obtained by SMS. The photon statistics provide a measure of the number and brightness of independently emit…
Unlike normal fluorescent methods that use the intensity as a direct measurement of the localized enhanced field, we use blinking statistics of quantum dots (QDs). We have already shown that blinking gives a more accurate characterization of the near-field. When an emitter is situated close to a metallic surface, non-radiative pathways are opened up, leading to quenching of the exciton. Blinking statistics, however, is only minimally affected by quenching, and therefore can be used to probe emitters in close proximity to metallic surfaces. We have expanded our method (COFIBINS) to high densiti…
A surrounding electromagnetic environment can engineer spontaneous emissions from quantum emitters through the Purcell effect. For instance, a plasmonic antenna can efficiently confine an electromagnetic field and enhance the fluorescent process. In this study, we demonstrate that a photonic microcavity can modulate plasmon-enhanced fluorescence by engineering the local electromagnetic environment. Consequently, we constructed a plasmon-enhanced emitter (PE-emitter), which comprised a nanorod and a nanodiamond, using the nanomanipulation technique. Furthermore, we controlled a polystyrene sphe…
This document briefly introduces the key concepts to understand the phenomenon of fluorescence enhancement with optical nanostructures. The equations remain simple, with the major goal to illustrate the different physical effects at play. It also provides an overview of different recent approaches to enhance single molecule fluorescence with plasmonic and non-plasmonic nanoantennas, and describes three main biochemical applications.
We report on enhanced fluorescence of lead sulfide quantum dots interacting with leaky modes of slab-type silicon photonic crystals. The photonic crystal slabs were fabricated supporting leaky modes in the near infrared wavelength range. Lead sulfite quantum dots which are resonant the same spectral range were prepared in a thin layer above the slab. We selectively excited the leaky modes by tuning wavelength and angle of incidence of the laser source and measured distinct resonances of enhanced fluorescence. By an appropriate experiment design, we ruled out directional light extraction effect…
A class of hybrid photonic-plasmonic structures (HPPS) with vertical cylindrical cavities is proposed and its performance in providing a coherent light from spontaneous emission is investigated. It is shown that the proposed easy-to-fabricate and robust anodic aluminum oxide structure dramatically enhances the temporal and spatial coherence compared to the previously examined HPPS. The physical mechanism of achieving the temporal and spatial coherence is explained based on the special optical properties of the proposed HPPS and it is discussed how this structure enables one adjusting hybrid ph…
FRET-based approaches are a unique tool for sensing the immediate surroundings and interactions of (bio)molecules. FRET imaging and FLIM (Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging Microscopy) enable the visualization of the spatial distribution of molecular interactions and functional states. However, conventional FLIM and FRET imaging provide average information over an ensemble of molecules within a diffraction-limited volume, which limits the spatial information, accuracy, and dynamic range of the observed signals. Here, we demonstrate an approach to obtain super-resolved FRET imaging based on single-m…
Quantum technologies that rely on photonic qubits require a precise controllability of their properties. For this purpose hybrid approaches are particularly attractive because they offer a large flexibility to address different aspects of the photonic degrees of freedom. When combining photonics with other quantum platforms like phonons, quantum transducers have to be realized that convert between the mechanical and optical domain. Here, we realize this interface between phonons in the form of surface acoustic waves (SAWs) and single photons, mediated by a single semiconductor quantum dot exci…
Structured illumination in Single Molecule Localization Microscopy provides new information on the position of molecules and thus improves the localization precision compared to standard localization methods. Here, we used a time-shifted sinusoidal excitation pattern to modulate the fluorescence signal of the molecules whose position information is carried by the phase and recovered by synchronous demodulation. We designed two flexible fast demodulation systems located upstream of the camera, allowing us to overcome the limiting camera acquisition frequency and thus to maximize the collection …
Efficient on-chip integration of single-photon emitters imposes a major bottleneck for applications of photonic integrated circuits in quantum technologies. Resonantly excited solid-state emitters are emerging as near-optimal quantum light sources, if not for the lack of scalability of current devices. Current integration approaches rely on cost-inefficient individual emitter placement in photonic integrated circuits, rendering applications impossible. A promising scalable platform is based on two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors. However, resonant excitation and single-photon emission of waveg…
Colloidal Quantum dots (CQDs) are nowadays one of the cornerstones of modern photonics as they have led to the emergence of new optoelectronic and biomedical technologies. However, the full characterization of these quantum emitters is currently restricted to the visible wavelengths and it remains a key challenge to optically probe single CQDs operating in the infrared spectral domain which is targeted by a growing number of applications. Here, we report the first experimental detection and imaging at room temperature of single infrared CQDs operating at telecommunication wavelengths. Imaging …
This thesis is devoted to the study of the coupling of single-photon emitters with photonic nanostructures by using the properties of the near field of a photonic structure in view of the realization of a compact integrated single-photon source for quantum applications. The first part of my thesis work was consecrated to the optimization of perovskites nanocrystals. Although perovskites nanocrystals are very promising single-photon sources, they still need improvements: in this work, I review the main properties of these emitters and present a full characterization of perovskite nanocrystals w…
Scalable quantum photonic networks require coherent excitation of quantum emitters. However, many solid-state systems can undergo a transition to a dark shelving state that inhibits the fluorescence. Here we demonstrate that a controlled gating using a weak non-resonant laser, the resonant excitation can be recovered and amplified for single germanium vacancies (GeVs). Employing the gated resonance excitation, we achieve optically stable resonance fluorescence of GeV centers. Our results are pivotal for the deployment of diamond color centers as reliable building blocks for scalable solid stat…
In this article, we address fluorescence of single molecule inside a plasmonic picocavity by proposing a semi-classical theory via combining the macroscopic quantum electrodynamics theory and the open quantum system theory. To gain insights into the experimental results [Nat. Photonics, 14, 693 (2020)], we have further equipped this theory with the classical electromagnetic simulation of the pico-cavity, formed by single atom decorated silver STM tip and a silver substrate, and the time-dependent density functional theory calculation of zinc phthalocyanine molecule. Our simulations not only re…
Deterministically integrating single solid-state quantum emitters with photonic nanostructures serves as a key enabling resource in the context of photonic quantum technology. Due to the random spatial location of many widely-used solid-state quantum emitters, a number of positoning approaches for locating the quantum emitters before nanofabrication have been explored in the last decade. Here, we review the working principles of several nanoscale positioning methods and the most recent progress in this field, covering techniques including atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, …

Semiconductor quantum dots embedded in micro-pillar cavities are excellent emitters of single photons when pumped resonantly. Often, the same spatial mode is used to both resonantly excite a quantum dot and to collect the emitted single photons, requiring cross-polarization to reduce the uncoupled scattered laser light. This inherently reduces the source brightness to 50 %. Critically, for some quantum applications the total efficiency from generation to detection must be over 50 %. Here, we demonstrate a resonant-excitation approach to creating single photons that is free of any cross-polariz…
A solid state emitter coupled to a photonic crystal cavity exhibits increased photon emission into a single frequency mode. However, current designs for photonic crystal cavities coupled to quantum emitters have three main problems: emitters are placed near surfaces that can degrade their optical properties, the cavity fluorescence cannot be collected into a single useful mode for further routing, and post-fabrication tuning is not currently possible in a stable and reversible manner for each node individually. In this paper, we introduce a hybrid cavity design with minimal fabrication of the …
Machine learning techniques can reveal hidden structure in large data amounts and can potentially extent or even replace analytical scientific methods. In nanophotonics, modes can increase the light yield from emitters located inside the nanostructure or near the surface. Optimizing such systems enforces to systematically analyze large amounts of three-dimensional field distribution data. We present a method based on finite element simulations and machine learning for the identification of modes with large field energies and specific spatial properties. By clustering we reduce the field distri…
In this work, we use a site-selective functionalization strategy to decorate plasmonic nanopores with one or more fluorescent dyes. Using an easy and robust fabrication method, we manage to build single plasmonic rings on top of dielectric nanotubes with different inner diameters. The modulation of the dimension of the nanopores allows us to both tailor their field confinement and their Purcell Factor in the visible spectral range. In order to investigate how the changes in geometry influence the fluorescence emission efficiency, thiol-conjugated dyes are anchored on the plasmonic ring, thus f…
One important building block for future integrated nanophotonic devices is the scalable on-chip interfacing of single photon emitters and quantum memories with single optical modes. Here we present the deterministic integration of a single solid-state qubit, the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center, with a photonic platform consisting exclusively of SiO$_2$ grown thermally on a Si substrate. The platform stands out by its ultra-low fluorescence and the ability to produce various passive structures such as high-Q microresonators and mode-size converters. By numerical analysis an optimal structure for t…
We realize a potential platform for an efficient spin-photon interface, namely negatively-charged silicon-vacancy centers in a diamond membrane coupled to the mode of a fully-tunable, fiber-based, optical resonator. We demonstrate that introducing the thin ($\sim 200 \, \text{nm}$), single crystal diamond membrane into the mode of the resonator does not change the cavity properties, which is one of the crucial points for an efficient spin-photon interface. In particular, we observe constantly high Finesse values of up to $3000$ and a linear dispersion in the presence of the membrane. We observ…
To implement quantum light sources based on quantum emitters in applications, it is desirable to improve the extraction efficiency of single photons. In particular controlling the directionality and solid angle of the emission are key parameters, for instance, to couple single photons into optical fibers and send the information encoded in quantum light over long distances, for quantum communication applications. In addition, fundamental studies of the radiative behavior of quantum emitters, including studies of coherence and blinking, benefit from such improved photon collection. Quantum dots…
We report a comparison of two photonic techniques for single-molecule sensing: fluorescence nanoscopy and optoplasmonic sensing. As the test system, oligonucleotides with and without fluorescent labels are transiently hybridized to complementary docking strands attached to gold nanorods. Comparing the measured single-molecule kinetics helps to examine the influence of fluorescent labels as well as factors arising from different sensing geometries. Our results demonstrate that DNA dissociation is not significantly altered by the fluorescent label, while DNA association is affected by geometric …
Integrated on-demand single-photon sources are critical for the implementation of photonic quantum information processing systems. To enable practical quantum photonic devices, the emission rates of solid-state quantum emitters need to be substantially enhanced and the emitted signal must be directly coupled to an on-chip circuitry. The photon emission rate speed-up is best achieved via coupling to plasmonic antennas, while on-chip integration can be easily obtained by directly coupling emitters to photonic waveguides. The realization of practical devices requires that both the emission speed-…
