The relativistic addition of parallel velocities is derived involving relativity only via the time dilation formula, avoiding the length contraction used by many authors in conjunction with time dilation. The followed scenario involves a machine gun that fires successive bullets, considered from its rest frame and from the rest frame of the target, the bullets hit.
Interpretation of relativistic, transverse, and longitudinal mass using the Lorentz transformation of reference time: Explanation of time dilation via spherical light clock
We show that some primary special relativity effects, which are believed to be hardly detectable in everyday life, such as time dilation, relativistic Doppler effect, and length contraction, should tangibly and spectacularly show up here on the Earth. They should occur in ordinary observations of known astronomical phenomena, also when these phenomena involve astronomical systems that move with very low velocities relative to us but are very distant. We shall do that by providing a reanalysis of the so-called Andromeda paradox and by revisiting the standard explanation of the muon lifetime dil…
We first present the salient features of the gravitational time dilation and redshift effects in two ways; by considering the oscillation frequencies/rates of clocks at different heights/potentials and by considering the photons emitted by these clocks such as atoms/nuclei. We then point out to the extension of these gravitational effects to static electricity along with two experiments performed in the '30s with null results of the electrostatic redshift. We show that the absence of this redshift is a consequence of the conservation of electric charge. We discuss the electrical time dilation …
We investigate in detail an apparently unnoticed consequence of special relativity. It consists in time dilation/contraction and frequency shift for emitted light affecting accelerated reference frames at astronomical distances from an inertial observer. The frequency shift is non-cosmological and non-Doppler in nature. We derive the main formulae and compare their predictions with the astronomical data available for Proxima Centauri. We found no correspondence with observations. Since the implications of the new time dilation/contraction and frequency shift are blatantly paradoxical, we do no…
It turns out that the standard application of the four-vector SR formalism does not include the concept of relative velocity. Only the absolute velocity is described by the four-vector, and even the Lorentz transformation parameters is described by the three-dimensional velocity. This gap in the development of the SR formalism reflects the lack of some significant velocity subtraction operations. The differential application of these operations leads to a relativistic acceleration.
In this work, the relativistic phenomena of Lorentz-Fitzgerald contraction and time dilation are derived using a modified distance formula that is appropriate for discrete space. This new distance formula is different than the Pythagorean theorem but converges to it for distances large relative to the Planck length. First, four candidate formulas developed by different people over the last 70 years will be discussed. Three of the formulas are shown to be identical for conditions that best describe discrete space. It is shown that this new distance formula is valid for all size-scales -- from t…
Rotational transformations describe relativistic effects in rotating frames. There are four major kinematic rotational transformations: the Langevin metric; Post transformation; Franklin transformation; and the rotational form of the absolute Lorentz transformation. The four transformations exhibit different combinations of relativistic effects and simultaneity frameworks, and generate different predictions for relativistic phenomena. Here, the predictions of the four rotational transformations are compared with recent optical data that has sufficient resolution to distinguish the transformati…
We derive the relativistic velocity addition law, the transformations of electromagnetic fields and space-time intervals by examining the drift velocities in a crossed electromagnetic field configuration. The postulate of the light velocity invariance is not taken as a priori, but is derived as the universal upper limit of physical drift velocities. The key is that a physical drift of either an electric charge or a magnetic charge remains a drift motion by inertial reference frame transformations. Such a simple fact is incompatible with the Galilean velocity addition. This derivation provides …
